Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3126A is an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied as cylindrical pellets for injection molding and, where viscosity permits, profile extrusion. The model suffix 3126A denotes a specific melt-flow and impact balance within the manufacturer’s 3126 series, but publicly available lot-specific technical data for this exact configuration is limited. Accordingly, the test values and processing ranges presented here are situated within the documented envelope for unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS alloys of comparable viscosity class and are not a substitute for a shipped-lot certificate of analysis. The grade is specified for electronic equipment enclosures, small appliance housings, automotive interior brackets, and other structural parts that do not require a UL 94 V-0 listing and are not continuously exposed to ultraviolet weathering without a UV-stabilized system.
For formal procurement documents, the material should be specified as unfilled PC+ABS, general-purpose, 3126A, Dongguan Zhengxian, with an agreed melt volume-flow rate acceptance window. The designation PC/ABS 3126A is an internal grade code and not an ISO 1043-1:2011 material designation; the ISO 1043-1:2011 polymer family notation is PC+ABS followed by the manufacturer’s internal code.
Because the manufacturer’s lot-specific datasheet for 3126A is not independently published, the following representative property envelope for unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS alloys should be used only for preliminary design calculations. The controlling values remain those reported on the certificate of analysis for the delivered lot.
| Property | Test method | Typical envelope | Significance for 3126A preliminary design |
|---|---|---|---|
| Density | ISO 1183-1:2019 / ASTM D792-20 | 1.12–1.15 g/cm³ | Mass estimation; unfilled grade, no filler content. |
| Tensile stress at yield | ISO 527-1:2019 / ASTM D638-14 | 50–60 MPa | Dry-as-molded value; residual moisture reduces local yield behavior. |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178:2019 / ASTM D790-17 | 2200–2600 MPa | Stiffness class for snap-fit and rib design. |
| Notched Izod impact, 23 °C | ISO 180/A:2000 | 35–55 kJ/m² | Influenced by ABS phase content and notch radius; gate-area specimens can be lower. |
| Heat deflection temperature, 1.82 MPa | ISO 75-2:2013 / ASTM D648-18 | 105–120 °C | Short-term thermal resistance under load; not a continuous use temperature. |
| Melt volume-flow rate, 260 °C / 5.0 kg | ISO 1133-1:2022 / ASTM D1238-20 | 12–18 cm³/10 min | Flow class associated with the A-variant; confirm against lot certificate. |
| Vicat softening temperature, B50 | ISO 306:2022 | 125–135 °C | Upper temperature indication without mechanical load. |
For mold design, unfilled PC/ABS alloys of this class are typically assigned an average mold shrinkage of 0.5% to 0.7% according to ISO 294-4:2018. Flow-direction shrinkage is usually lower than cross-flow shrinkage by 0.05–0.15 percentage points, and the final value depends on wall thickness, mold temperature, gate seal time, and packing pressure. Weld lines should be positioned away from decorative surfaces and snap-fit roots, because unfilled PC/ABS retains only a portion of un-welded impact strength when cold weld lines are formed.
Procurement specifications should require a certificate of analysis with each shipment. For incoming resin verification, mid-infrared spectroscopy can be used to confirm the carbonyl absorbance associated with the PC phase and the nitrile absorbance associated with the ABS phase. Differential scanning calorimetry at 10 °C/min under nitrogen is less useful for positive grade identification because unfilled PC/ABS does not exhibit a sharp crystalline melting endotherm; it is better limited to thermal-history and additive screening.
The A-suffix is understood within the manufacturer’s series as a balanced-flow modification. The base 3126 is typically selected where higher low-temperature notched impact retention is required, while 3126B may contain a modified lubricant package for improved ejection from textured tool surfaces. This classification follows common PC/ABS naming practice and not a published Dongguan Zhengxian comparative datasheet. Processors should not substitute 3126A for 3126 or 3126B without molding side-by-side plaques according to ISO 294-3 for shrinkage and warpage and measuring notched Izod impact according to ISO 180/A:2000 at 23 °C and −20 °C.
As a general-purpose unfilled alloy, 3126A should be treated as a UL 94 HB material unless the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis expressly lists a V-0, V-1, or V-2 rating at a specific wall thickness. It differs from flame-retardant PC/ABS grades in that a vertical-burn listing should not be assumed. If a V-0 listing at 1.5 mm is required, a dedicated FR-modified PC/ABS should be evaluated and the component should be listed under the molder’s UL file.
Compared with glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS, 3126A is expected to exhibit lower flexural modulus and lower heat deflection temperature, but easier flow and reduced tool wear. Compared with an FR-modified PC/ABS of similar melt-flow, 3126A generally lacks the phosphorus-based flame retardant that increases high-shear viscosity; injection pressure may therefore be lower, but flammability classification is not equivalent.
Before molding, residual moisture must be reduced below 0.02 wt% as determined by ISO 15512:2019 coulometric Karl Fischer titration. A closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point of not more than −30 °C should be used at 80 °C to 100 °C for 3 h to 4 h. Moisture contents above 0.05 wt% produce splay and silver streaks at the gate and can hydrolyze the PC phase, reducing molecular weight and causing brittle failure in thin ribs. Production-scale processing on 100–160 tonne hydraulic injection molding machines with 20–22 mm general-purpose screws is typically started at a rear zone of 240 °C, a middle zone of 255 °C, a front zone of 265 °C, and a nozzle setting of 270 °C. The melt temperature should be kept between 250 °C and 280 °C, and the mold temperature should be held at 60 °C to 90 °C to improve weld-line strength and reduce surface delamination.
If regrind is permitted by the end-product specification, the addition level should be established by molding trial. Unfilled PC/ABS alloys commonly tolerate 10% to 20% clean in-house regrind without gross loss of notched Izod impact, but color shift and splay may increase above 20%. For thin-wall sections below 1.2 mm, a fast injection profile is preferred to avoid premature gate freeze-off; typical starting conditions include an injection pressure limit of 80–120 MPa and a holding pressure of 40–60 MPa.
When moisture remains above 0.02 wt%, processing shear at melt temperatures above 250 °C accelerates hydrolytic chain scission in the polycarbonate segment. The result is a loss of notched Izod impact relative to dry-as-molded controls; published polymer processing data for PC-rich alloys indicate reductions of 25% to 40% when residual moisture is not controlled before molding. The ABS phase is less sensitive to moisture but can contribute to silver streaking through vaporization at the flow front. Drying air should be maintained at a dew point of −30 °C or lower, and the hopper loader should be jacketed if the molding bay exceeds 70% relative humidity. A vented cylinder is not a substitute for pre-drying because residence time in the vent zone is too short to remove absorbed moisture from the pellet core.
In bearing housings and electric motor support brackets where a UL 94 V-0 rating was originally specified, 3126A is not a direct drop-in unless the final component is re-certified at the same wall thickness and with the same color concentrate. Unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS alloys of this class generally do not meet vertical-burn performance at thicknesses below 1.5 mm and are more appropriately classified as HB. The replacement may be technically valid in non-current-carrying structural parts where flammability risk is controlled by enclosure design rather than material rating, but the end-product manufacturer retains responsibility for confirming compliance. Mechanical loads in such brackets should also be evaluated with tensile creep data according to ISO 899-1:2017 at the service temperature, because unreinforced PC/ABS exhibits significant creep above 60 °C under continuous stress.
Regulatory acceptance should not be inferred from the grade name. The following screening matrix summarizes documentation requirements for procurement of 3126A in electrical, electronic, and general industrial components.
| Regulation / standard | Documentation or test method | Typical requirement for unfilled non-FR PC/ABS |
|---|---|---|
| RoHS 2011/65/EU, Annex II | XRF screening or IEC 62321 series | Homogeneous material limits: lead 1000 mg/kg, mercury 1000 mg/kg, cadmium 100 mg/kg, hexavalent chromium 1000 mg/kg, PBB 1000 mg/kg, PBDE 1000 mg/kg; lot-specific confirmation required. |
| REACH, Candidate List SVHC | Supplier declaration or chemical analysis | Communication required if any SVHC exceeds 0.1% w/w in the article; not presumed absent without supplier data. |
| UL 94 | Vertical burn test at specified thickness | Treat as HB unless a V-0, V-1, or V-2 rating is stated on the UL yellow card for the actual color and thickness. |
| FDA 21 CFR | Not applicable to general-purpose industrial grade | Do not use 3126A for food-contact surfaces unless specific clearance is provided in writing by the supplier. |
Returnable logistics trays molded from unfilled PC/ABS of this flow class have exhibited corner cracking when hot-tip gates below 0.8 mm are used with wall sections above 2.5 mm because high gate shear reduces molecular weight. For such applications, tool trials should include a valve-gated hot runner with a tip orifice of 1.2 mm to 1.5 mm and should measure notched Izod impact on specimens cut from the gate area according to ISO 180/A:2000. This application-specific check is required because lot-specific datasheets do not capture gate-area degradation from improperly sized hot-runner tips.
