Desiccant-dried Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3118B is fed to a reciprocating-screw injection unit with screw diameter between 60 mm and 80 mm and L/D ratio 20–22; barrel temperature from rear to nozzle is profiled at 240–270 °C, with hot-runner manifold held at 260–275 °C and cavity steel at 70–90 °C. A two-stage filling profile is applied because a first-stage injection speed above 80 mm/s across thick-to-thin transitions in cockpit carriers produces jetting and weak weld lines at boss bases. Pack pressure is held at 60–80 MPa for 3–6 s after gate seal. At ambient relative humidity above 60%, open transfer from dryer to machine hopper is limited to 15 min to prevent moisture regain above 0.02 wt%. Barrel residence time exceeding 8 min produces surface silver streaking and increased odour above typical interior release limits; the process boundary is therefore monitored during every hot-runner manifold shut-down.
The lower cockpit substrate formulation is set at 100 phr PC/ABS 3118B; closed-loop sprues/runners regrind is limited to 25 phr after tensile and impact re-validation, and 2.0–3.0 wt% low-VOC dark-gray masterbatch is added to reduce scratch-induced stress whitening. Automotive interior compliance is assessed before serial release through ISO 3795 and FMVSS 302 for horizontal burning, VDA 270 or OEM thermodesorption for odour and fogging, and long-term heat ageing at 85 °C. Terminal product types include lower steering column shrouds, centre console carrier plates, glove box inner cassettes, and HVAC duct frames. The grade is not substituted for airbag deployment door covers unless OEM-specific high-speed tensile testing is completed at -30 °C and 80 °C.
Flow-line defects in hot-runner-fed notebook base covers often originate from delayed melt reheating at the valve-gate tip and from variable cavity wall temperature during rapid filling of 1.2–1.8 mm nominal wall sections. PC/ABS 3118B is processed neat after desiccant drying at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h to a residual moisture below 0.02 wt%. Melt temperature at the nozzle is maintained at 250–270 °C, pressurised water or oil thermolators hold cavity steel at 60–80 °C, and fill-to-pack switchover is based on screw position rather than hydraulic pressure to reduce gate blush around hot-runner drops. The process window is narrow for thin-wall sections below 1.2 mm; if the specific lot has no UL Yellow Card at that wall thickness, published data for this flame-retardant configuration is limited and a pre-compliance moulding trial is required.
Portable computing safety compliance is evaluated under IEC 62368-1:2023, and flammability is assessed to UL 94 at the final minimum wall thickness. The feed formulation is 100 phr PC/ABS 3118B; 1.0–2.0 wt% conductive carbon black masterbatch is added only where electronic shielding or ESD paint adhesion is specified, and subsequent TPU overmoulding requires 0.5–1.0 mm radial step transitions to avoid knit-line stress concentration. Terminal product types include laptop bottom covers, display rear bezels, tablet back enclosures, and detachable keyboard substrates. Drop-impact validation follows OEM protocols, not a single ASTM method, and should be repeated when regrind exceeds 20 wt%.
In outdoor AC charging station enclosures, differential shrinkage between front and rear shells becomes visible when shot mass exceeds 600 g and the tool is run with a clamp force of 8,000–12,000 kN. PC/ABS 3118B is pre-dried to below 0.02 wt% moisture and processed at a melt temperature of 260–275 °C; mould temperature is zoned from 70 °C at the gate to 85 °C at the last-filled corner to reduce warpage. Sequential valve gating moves the weld line away from sealing channels and pillar bosses. Cooling time is derived from wall thickness squared, but post-mould dimensional audit at 48 h is required because PC/ABS 3118B can continue ambient post-demoulding shrinkage. Direct contact with acetic acid–curing silicone sealants is excluded because free acetic acid attacks the polycarbonate phase at the interface.
Electrical enclosure compliance is evaluated under IEC 61851-1:2017 for conductive charging systems, IEC 61439-1:2020 for low-voltage switchgear assemblies, and IEC 60695-2-11 at 850 °C glow wire on the finished assembly. The compound is fed as 100 phr PC/ABS 3118B; for exterior UV exposure, 1.0–2.0 wt% UV-stabilized color concentrate is compounded in, and coated parts require 30–40 µm dry film thickness after post-mould painting. Terminal part types include AC wallbox enclosures, socket inlet covers, and internal mounting brackets.
Clamshell housings for professional drills and impact drivers develop boss cracking at -20 °C when effective wall thickness changes abruptly at the boss base and packing pressure decays too early. PC/ABS 3118B is processed at 100 phr with regrind capped at 20 wt%; the nozzle melt temperature is held at 250–275 °C, and the two halves are moulded in hardened steel cavities at 60–80 °C. The injection sequence uses unscrewing cores for threaded inserts, hydraulic slides for handle cores, and closed-loop fill-to-pack switchover by screw position; the target is to avoid sink at rib intersections and whisker-flash around slide shut-offs. Valve gates are located on the reverse side of the boss base rather than on exposed surfaces, with gate land length held to 0.8–1.2 mm to prevent gate blush.
Compliance testing for power tool enclosures follows IEC 62841-1:2014, with flammability assessed to UL 94 HB or V-grade only where retailer protocols require. If a V-0 package is required, the UL 94 Yellow Card for the specific lot must be verified before tooling freeze, because additive package changes can invalidate the rating. Terminal part types include drill/driver housing halves, impact driver motor covers, and battery pack upper shells. Post-mould annealing is not applied when wall stock remains below 3 mm; annealing is reserved for thick-walled enclosures and may reduce low-temperature impact in thin clamshells.
Because grey or white diagnostic cart surfaces are repeatedly wiped with hydrogen peroxide and quaternary ammonium disinfectants in clinical environments, the enclosure polymer must resist stress crazing and colour shift after 30 chemical exposure cycles. Cytotoxicity screening to ISO 10993-5:2009 is run on moulded plaques when the enclosure is specified as accessible to patients. PC/ABS 3118B is fed at 100 phr with 2.0–3.0 wt% polycarbonate-based colour masterbatch; regrind use is limited to 20 wt% and requires full lot traceability under ISO 13485:2016 process controls. Electrical safety compliance for the finished device is assessed under IEC 60601-1:2005+A1:2012, and the enclosure material is documented in the ISO 14971 risk management file as non-patient-contact. Processing uses a melt temperature of 250–270 °C, mould temperature of 70–85 °C, and a dryer dew point below -30 °C; hot-runner needle-valve gates are preferred to reduce gate blush on high-gloss rear covers. Terminal products include ultrasound cart enclosures, patient monitor rear covers, diagnostic console bezels, and mobile workstation panel sets. This grade is not positioned for invasive patient-contact components or long-term skin-contact assemblies.
Glow-wire testing on thin-wall power adapter shells under IEC 60695-2-11 at 850 °C is sensitive to melt residence time, hot-runner shear history, and local thickness reductions around snap-fit roots. Moulding trials with 100 phr PC/ABS 3118B use a melt temperature of 250–270 °C, mould temperature of 70–85 °C, and barrel residence time below 6 min per shot to avoid thermal yellowing and decomposition products that degrade ignition performance. Mould steel is vented at 0.01–0.02 mm depth around the last-filled snap-fit roots to reduce gas traps that can become ignition sites. If UL 94 V-0 or V-1 is required at 1.5 mm, the specific 3118B lot must carry a valid UL Yellow Card; general-purpose PC/ABS cannot be assumed to exhibit that rating.
The formulation allows 25 wt% maximum regrind of confirmed lot identity, and colour masterbatch is restricted to 1.0–2.0 wt% because metallic or pearlescent pigments can lower glow-wire ignition temperature. Terminal parts include USB wall chargers, power adapter shells, power bank enclosures, and charger plug bodies. Parts with wall thickness below 0.8 mm at snap-fit roots should be validated separately, because thermal mass during glow-wire testing is insufficient to self-extinguish after glow-wire removal.
In steam-heated washing machine control panels, film-insert injection combines PC/ABS 3118B as the rigid substrate at 100 phr with a 0.25–0.50 mm PMMA decorative film; the process holds the melt at 250–270 °C and the cavity at 60–80 °C to prevent film washout and edge-lift from differential thermal expansion. Electrical and household safety compliance for the final appliance falls under IEC 60335-1:2010+A2:2019, with glow-wire testing prescribed by the end-product standard for unvented external surfaces. The substrate is pigmented with 1.0–2.0 wt% low-dust color masterbatch; no amine-based lubricants are permitted in the feed system because residual amine accelerates polycarbonate degradation at processing temperatures. Terminal product types include washing machine control panels, microwave oven fascia windows, and dishwasher front panels. High-humidity pre-conditioning at 60 °C and 90% RH for 48 h is applied before adhesive lamination to avoid entrapped moisture blistering.

Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3118B is an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene alloy supplied in pellet form for injection moulding. The suffix 3118B remains a manufacturer-specific grade identifier; published lot-specific data for this exact configuration is limited. The numerical ranges below are class-level envelopes for unfilled, medium-flow PC/ABS materials measured under the cited ISO and IEC methods, not lot-specific release values. Procurement qualification should therefore rely on a certificate of analysis from Dongguan Zhengxian before production approval, especially where flammability or automotive interior specifications apply.
The material is specified in moulding operations where a reduction in melt viscosity relative to unfilled PC must be combined with low-temperature impact retention above that of general-purpose ABS. Incoming-grade qualification typically uses ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy testing at -30 °C, with acceptance thresholds commonly set at or above 10 kJ/m², and ISO 306:2022 Vicat softening temperature B50 screening above 105 °C. Processing on reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines with shut-off nozzles and hopper dryers is expected.
Incoming inspection for unfilled PC/ABS 3118B should include density, melt volume-flow rate, tensile, flexural, and notched Charpy impact testing. The class-level values in Table 1 are intended only for first-article comparison; they are not a substitute for the supplier’s release values. When no certificate of analysis is available, the material cannot be pre-approved for safety-critical enclosure use solely on the basis of category-typical data.
| Property | Test method | Class-level range |
|---|---|---|
| Density | ISO 1183-1:2019 | 1.12–1.16 g/cm³ |
| Melt volume-flow rate, 260 °C, 5.0 kg | ISO 1133-1:2022 | 12–25 cm³/10 min |
| Tensile stress at yield, 50 mm/min | ISO 527-2:2012, type 1A | 45–58 MPa |
| Tensile modulus, 1 mm/min | ISO 527-2:2012 | 2,100–2,600 MPa |
| Flexural modulus, 2 mm/min | ISO 178:2019 | 2,000–2,500 MPa |
| Notched Charpy impact, 23 °C | ISO 179-1/1eA | 40–70 kJ/m² |
| Notched Charpy impact, -30 °C | ISO 179-1/1eA | 10–25 kJ/m² |
| Vicat softening temperature, B50 | ISO 306:2022 | 105–125 °C |
| Heat deflection temperature, 1.80 MPa, flatwise | ISO 75-2:2013, method A | 90–110 °C |
The tensile property spread arises from differences in polycarbonate molecular weight, ABS rubber particle size, and compatibilizer level. The 3118B designation does not by itself disclose whether a particular lot is at the low, mid, or high end of this range. A two-lot incoming comparison should therefore use the same conditioning protocol, preferably ISO 291:2008 class standard atmosphere 23 °C / 50% relative humidity, because moisture absorption can shift tensile and impact results.
Because the polycarbonate phase hydrolyzes at processing temperatures when residual moisture exceeds 0.02% by weight, pre-drying in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h is required. The drying air must reach a dew point of -30 °C or lower; at ambient relative humidity above 60%, the material should be dried and conveyed with sealed hopper loaders to prevent moisture regain. Lot-to-lot hydrolysis is detected as silver streaking on the part surface and a reduction in ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy impact at -30 °C to below 10 kJ/m² in un-dried material.
Barrel temperature profiles are commonly set in a flat or slightly reverse profile between 240 °C and 270 °C. The nozzle should be controlled to 250–270 °C, and the mould surface temperature should be held at 60–90 °C to balance weld-line strength against gloss. Residence time at melt temperature should be kept below 8 min, with total cycle interruptions not exceeding 15 min; longer hold times in hot-runner channels can produce black specks and carbon dioxide generation from PC degradation. Use of a general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1–25:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1 is adequate for single-flight plastication. Back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa and screw surface speed of 0.2–0.5 m/s reduce trapped air without excessive shear heating.
Weld-line strength in thin-wall bosses and snap-fit arms is evaluated with double-gated tensile specimens under ISO 527-2:2012; retention of more than 60% of the non-weld tensile stress at yield is typically required for power-tool housing bosses. Mould temperatures below 60 °C result in lower weld-line retention in grained surfaces, while temperatures above 90 °C extend cycle time and may cause sticking in untextured cores. The gate design should avoid direct impingement of melt on polished steel because jetting can create flow lines that are not removed by post-mould finishing.
On production-scale injection moulding machines with clamp force above 1,000 kN, part quality for unfilled PC/ABS 3118B is frequently constrained by gate blush and delamination rather than short-shot pressure. Multi-cavity tools with valve-gated hot runners should be balanced to no more than 5% fill time variation among cavities; when fill imbalance exceeds this, the cavity with the shortest fill time typically exhibits localized burn marks from compressed air. Rust-preventive oils and mould-release sprays based on silicone can interfere with surface adhesion of subsequent painting or metallization; compatibility should be tested on grained and smooth tool surfaces before production approval.
Automotive interior substrates moulded from PC/ABS alloys are frequently subjected to odour and fogging screening under VDA 270 B3 and ISO 6452:2021, respectively. If Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3118B is to be used in cabin applications, lot-specific volatile organic compound data are required; class-level PC/ABS materials may exhibit non-condensable emissions near the method limit when barrel residence time exceeds 8 min. No published odour classification for this specific configuration is available, so the processor should not rely on category-typical values for OEM approvals.
Table 2 compares class-level thermo-mechanical positioning. The 3118B class occupies an intermediate heat resistance and impact plateau between general-purpose ABS and unfilled PC. The processing advantage relative to unfilled PC is the reduction in melt temperature from 280–310 °C to 240–270 °C, which lowers energy input and reduces the risk of thermal oxidation of additives. Relative to GP-ABS, the PC/ABS alloy generally retains notched Charpy impact above 10 kJ/m² at -30 °C, whereas many GP-ABS compounds fall below 7 kJ/m² at the same temperature. Against PC/PBT, the 3118B class offers lower melt temperature and generally lower mould shrinkage, but published data for prolonged automotive underhood exposure is limited for this specific configuration.

Selection of 3118B over glass-filled PC/ABS or mineral-filled PC/ABS should be justified by a requirement for high impact and reduced filler-induced surface roughness; however, flexural modulus remains below 2,500 MPa unless the supplier’s lot-specific flexural data exceed the class-level upper bound. The unfilled nature also produces a lower ash content, typically below 1% when measured by ISO 3451-1:2019, but this must be confirmed on each lot.
Electrical enclosure specifications requiring a V-0 rating at 1.5 mm cannot be satisfied by class-level PC/ABS data. The grade must carry a UL Yellow Card issued for Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3118B, with the file number and colour-specific thickness documented. If no Yellow Card is available, flammability should be evaluated under IEC 60695-11-10 using 20 mm vertical burning specimens conditioned for 48 h at 23 °C / 50% RH according to ISO 291:2008. The existence of an HB class-level rating for unfilled PC/ABS does not permit substitution for V-0 enclosures.
REACH compliance is assessed under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, as amended; RoHS substance restrictions follow Directive 2011/65/EU and Commission Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863. A supplier declaration is required for articles falling within electrical and electronic equipment scope; the 3118B grade cannot be presumed compliant solely because it is an unfilled PC/ABS alloy. Avoid melt contact with PVC or acetal resins during colour changeovers because acidic decomposition products accelerate polycarbonate chain scission at processing temperatures above 260 °C.
