    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3118A is supplied as a polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy for injection moulding and selected extrusion operations. The alphanumeric grade code 3118A is a supplier-specific commercial designation and does not translate directly into an ISO short-name; lot-specific certificates of analysis therefore govern all acceptance parameters, including melt volume rate, density, tensile properties, impact resistance, and Vicat softening temperature. In industrial use, 3118A is considered for enclosures, housings, carrier frames, and structural interior components where the melt processibility of ABS is combined with the thermal stability and load-bearing characteristics of polycarbonate. The grade is typically handled as a general-purpose unfilled alloy unless supplier documentation explicitly lists flame-retardant, UV-stabilized, or glass-fiber-reinforced packages. Contractual specifications should state the exact test method, specimen type, conditioning protocol, and acceptance window for every property; comparisons based solely on the product name are not technically defensible.

What Drying and Melt-Temperature Boundaries Are Critical in Injection Moulding?

For 3118A, moisture control is the main processing variable. Polycarbonate segments in the alloy undergo hydrolytic chain scission at melt temperature when pellet moisture content remains above approximately 0.02 % by weight. Desiccant drying at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h, with closed-loop regeneration and a dew point below −30 °C, is the standard pre-treatment. Where plant ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, drying time is extended to 4–6 h and the hopper should be sealed with heated air return. On injection lines, inadequate drying appears as silver streaking, splay, nozzle drool, and a measurable loss in notched Izod impact when tested under ISO 180:2019. Melt temperature at the nozzle is usually held between 240 °C and 270 °C; temperatures below 240 °C increase melt pressure and may cause incomplete packing, while temperatures above 270 °C accelerate thermal degradation and can raise volatile content at the vent. A mould temperature of 60–90 °C is used for general-purpose grades. Mould temperatures below 60 °C reduce surface gloss and raise frozen-in stress, while temperatures above 90 °C may increase cycle time and promote sink marks in thick sections. Typical hydraulic back pressure is 5–10 bar, screw speed is 50–150 min⁻¹, and shot size should occupy 30–70 % of the barrel capacity. If color masterbatch is added at 2–3 wt%, gravimetric feeding is preferred over volumetric dosing because feed-rate variation can alter melt volume rate and surface aesthetics.

Mould design for 3118A should follow PC/ABS-specific practices. Hot runners with externally heated manifolds and thermally separated tips are preferred for multicavity tools; cold-runner sprue bushings with a minimum taper of 3° and sprue puller undercuts sized at 5–8 mm reduce sprue sticking. Vent depth at the parting line should not exceed 0.02–0.03 mm to avoid flash while permitting gas escape. If a glass-filled or mineral-filled PC/ABS grade is being replaced, injection speed profiles may require re-tuning because the unfilled melt cools faster in thin sections and can develop jetting or gate blush when high shear rates are retained without adjustment.

Mechanical property comparisons for 3118A are valid only when the test method and specimen geometry are fixed. Tensile modulus and elongation at yield are determined under ISO 527-2:2012 with type 1A specimens; ASTM D638-14 may be used for North American specifications, but values are not interchangeable with ISO methods. Typical unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS alloys in this class exhibit tensile stress at yield of 50–60 MPa, flexural modulus of 2200–2600 MPa under ISO 178:2019, and notched Izod impact at 23 °C of 35–60 kJ/m² under ISO 180:2019. Vicat B50 softening temperature generally falls between 120 °C and 135 °C under ISO 306:2022, while heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa is usually 95–110 °C under ISO 75-2:2013. These ranges are material-class reference values, not lot-specific guarantees for 3118A. A controlled incoming inspection program should compare the supplier certificate of analysis against the agreed supply specification at a defined confidence level.

Rheological data for incoming lots should be evaluated by capillary rheometry or by melt volume rate under ISO 1133-1:2022. A change in melt volume rate of more than ±10 % relative to the approved baseline is a process alert for lot release. In injection moulding, the viscosity difference becomes visible as a shift in fill time, peak cavity pressure, or gate freeze-off time. For multicavity tools, the balance between cavities should be checked with short shots; a cavity-to-cavity fill imbalance above 5 % by shot weight often indicates a worn check ring, blocked gate, or inconsistent mould temperature. These checks are standard for unfilled PC/ABS and are applied to 3118A when production tolerances are tight.

In thin-wall electronic housing production, 3118A is processed on injection moulding machines with clamp force selected to hold mould deflection below 0.05 mm across the parting line. Fan gates of 0.8–1.2 mm and tunnel gates of 1.2–1.5 mm are used to balance shear heating against pressure drop. For a flow length-to-thickness ratio of 100:1, melt pressure at the nozzle may exceed 1000 bar; cavity pressure sensors are recommended to confirm gate freeze-off and switch-over point. Electroplating-grade applications require supplier confirmation that 3118A is formulated for plateability. If the grade contains high rubber content or migration-prone process aids, electroless nickel and decorative chrome adhesion can fall below an internal peel-strength target of 0.5 N/mm. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; production-etched plaques should be used for adhesion trials before volume conversion.

Downstream finishing for 3118A must be qualified with the exact grade and color concentrate. Painting adhesion is routinely tested by cross-cut tape pull under ISO 2409:2020 or ASTM D3359-17, with acceptance thresholds typically 4B–5B; however, unprimed PC/ABS can show adhesion variability if the surface contains low-molecular-weight release agents. Plasma or corona pretreatment at 500–1000 W·min/m² is used to raise surface energy above 38 mN/m. Electroplating requires a supplier-confirmed plateable formulation; the ABS phase must provide selectively etchable butadiene domains for electroless nickel adhesion. If 3118A is not specified as plateable, bath temperatures above 60 °C and prolonged acid etching can attack the PC matrix.

When 3118A Is Substituted for Neat PC or ABS in Thin-Wall Components

Substitution of neat PC by 3118A is often driven by lower melt viscosity and wider processing latitude; substitution of ABS is driven by higher Vicat softening under ISO 306:2022 and improved low-temperature ductility as measured by notched Izod at −30 °C under ISO 180:2019. The corresponding trade-off is that PC/ABS has lower solvent resistance than neat PC and lower stiffness than high-flow PC grades. Compared with ABS, 3118A requires more aggressive drying and is more sensitive to alkaline hydrolysis. Against a 20 % glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS, the unfilled 3118A has lower tensile modulus and lower dimensional stability at elevated temperature, but the absence of glass fiber reduces screw, check-ring, and barrel wear and lowers density by approximately 0.10–0.20 g/cm³. Against flame-retardant PC/ABS grades, 3118A is assumed non-FR unless a UL 94 classification at the intended wall thickness is provided on the supplier certificate. Installations under IEC 62368-1 may require additional glow-wire or needle-flame testing under IEC 60695-2-11 or IEC 60695-11-5 if the enclosure carries electrical insulation functions.

Processors should prevent contact between 3118A and alkaline or amine-based additives, including electroplating residues in recycled ABS streams. The polycarbonate segment is susceptible to base-catalysed hydrolysis; melt processing with such contaminants can reduce molecular weight and notched impact. Ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and certain plasticizers may produce environmental stress cracking under tensile strain and should be evaluated by ISO 22088-3:2006 or an equivalent bent-strip method. Outdoor ultraviolet exposure without a stabilization package normally causes yellowing and surface microcracking before bulk mechanical failure; a UV-stabilized variant is required for exterior use. For indoor electronic enclosures, continuous service near 60 °C is generally within the short-term thermal capability of unfilled PC/ABS, but snap-fit and screw-boss geometries require creep and stress-relaxation testing under the actual service load and environment.

Compliance Verification and Lot Certification Requirements

For European Union shipment, 3118A must be supported by supplier documentation demonstrating conformity with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863. REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 Article 33 requires communication of substances of very high concern above 0.1 wt% in the article. Flammability claims require a UL yellow card or an equivalent IEC 60695-11-10 report; the term “self-extinguishing” is not a substitute for a UL 94 classification at the intended thickness. Incoming lots should be checked for melt volume rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C and 5 kg, density under ISO 1183-1:2019, and moisture content by a calibrated Karl Fischer titrator or equivalent moisture analyzer. If a lot fails the agreed moisture limit, it should be re-dried and re-tested before production release.

Monitoring Batch-to-Batch Variation on Production-Scale Equipment

On production-scale twin-screw compounding lines with 40:1 L/D and side-fed masterbatch, batch-to-batch viscosity variation above ±5 % at constant melt volume rate is often traced to inconsistent polycarbonate feedstock molecular weight, ABS rubber particle size distribution, or insufficient homogenization of release agents. In injection moulding, a 10 °C reduction in melt temperature can raise melt viscosity enough to shift peak cavity pressure by more than 15 % in thin-wall tools. For 3118A, process validation should include cavity pressure monitoring at three or more sensor locations per tool, with short-shot studies to confirm gate freeze-off time and switch-over point. If a lot exhibits visible pellet gloss or color inconsistency, it should be quarantined until melt volume rate and moisture content are rechecked. Ultrasonic welding and solvent bonding operations require separate process validation because the alloy's ABS phase and PC phase respond differently to heat generation and solvent attack.
