    More Introduction

Designation Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3115B denotes a melt-compounded polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied in pellet form for injection moulding and, where rheology permits, thin-wall technical parts. Lot certificates from the manufacturer should be reviewed for nominal melt volume-flow rate, density, moisture content, and any internal mould release or heat stabilizer package. In the absence of lot-specific data, process-setting validation should begin with melt flow-rate determination by ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C/5.0 kg and density measurement by ISO 1183-1; these values establish whether the material falls into a high-flow or high-impact PC/ABS class. Preliminary processing on a 120–180 t injection moulding machine with a three-zone general-purpose screw of L/D 20:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 indicates the grade should be treated as a hygroscopic blend, not as a dry ABS analogue. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer with dew point ≤ −30 °C at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h is required; moisture above 0.02% by Karl Fischer titration depolymerizes the polycarbonate phase at melt temperature and produces splay, gate blush, and weak weld-line strength.

What Pre-Drying and Melt-Conditioning Limits Define Safe Moulding?

Moisture management in Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3115B is constrained by the polycarbonate phase hydrolysis risk at elevated melt residence time. The polycarbonate phase degrades when residual moisture exceeds 0.02%; at a melt temperature of 280 °C, a batch containing 0.10% moisture may show a melt flow-rate increase exceeding 15% relative to the dry pellet and a notched Izod impact loss of more than 25% at 23 °C when tested according to ISO 179-1/1eA. Dryer output should therefore deliver air at dew point ≤ −30 °C to a hopper inlet temperature of 80–100 °C for 3–4 h. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, open hopper residence should not exceed 30 min, or a closed-loop hopper dryer should be used. Recirculating desiccant beds should be monitored at the outlet, not the inlet, because sintered desiccant breakthrough can occur before the control thermocouple responds. Moisture content should be verified by ISO 15512 or an equivalent Karl Fischer procedure on pellets sampled directly from the hopper throat.

Barrel profile from feed to nozzle is commonly set at 240–260 °C rear, 255–270 °C center, 260–280 °C front, and nozzle 255–275 °C. Melt temperature measured by an immersion pyrometer should be maintained at 250–280 °C; below 245 °C, unmelted ABS phase raises viscosity and freezes weld lines; above 290 °C, polycarbonate thermal degradation produces brown streaks and lowers notched impact. Mould temperature should be 70–100 °C; for mineral-modified or glass-reinforced variants, the upper half of that range is preferred. Holding pressure is typically 50–80 MPa, back pressure 0.3–0.7 MPa, screw speed 30–70 rpm, and injection velocity medium-high. Shot size should occupy 30–70% of barrel capacity to limit residence time to 8–10 min or less. Clamp force for technical parts is generally 3.0–5.0 kN/cm² projected area; gate diameter should be 0.8–1.5 mm for edge gates and 0.8–1.2 mm for subgates. Vent depth should not exceed 0.02–0.04 mm to avoid flash while allowing volatile escape.

Where thin-wall enclosures are produced, Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3115B is generally evaluated for components with nominal wall thickness 1.2–2.5 mm where the ductile-brittle transition of unmodified ABS is insufficient and where polycarbonate alone may freeze too quickly in long flow paths. In such evaluations, the blend is processed at an actual melt temperature of 260–275 °C; the higher processing temperature reduces melt viscosity enough to fill a 1.5 mm wall section at a flow length/thickness ratio of 120:1 with a single edge gate. Moulded parts are conditioned at 23 ± 2 °C and 50 ± 5% relative humidity for 48 h according to ISO 291 before tensile testing; typical tensile modulus is 2200–2600 MPa, yield stress 55–65 MPa, elongation at yield 4–6%, and nominal strain at break often exceeds 50% for unfilled grades. These values are representative of general-purpose PC/ABS; the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis for lot 3115B should replace them for final acceptance.

    Mechanical, Thermal and Flow Benchmarks

The property band below is representative of unfilled PC/ABS grades of the 3115B viscosity class. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the lot certificate from Dongguan Zhengxian is the only authoritative source for final specification. Values are therefore not product-specific acceptance limits unless confirmed by the supplier.

Flammability classification must be confirmed for the specific color and additive package. The base resin class does not automatically imply a given UL 94 rating; a supplier-certified UL 94 Yellow Card or equivalent independent test report is required before enclosure acceptance.

When Higher-Heat or Solvent-Resistant Alternatives Are Compared in Enclosure Design

Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3115B differs from unmodified polycarbonate in melt-processing behavior and low-temperature impact, but it does not duplicate the higher heat capability of polycarbonate. Unmodified polycarbonate typically offers heat deflection temperature measured by ISO 75-1/2 method A of 125–135 °C at 1.8 MPa and similar tensile modulus near 2300–2500 MPa, but its melt viscosity at 280 °C and 1000 s⁻¹ is higher than PC/ABS, requiring higher injection pressures and larger gates. Unmodified ABS flows more readily but exhibits notched Izod impact at −30 °C below 10 kJ/m² in many injection grades and heat deflection temperature commonly 95–105 °C. PC/PBT alloys provide better solvent resistance and lower equilibrium moisture uptake but often show lower low-temperature ductility. The 3115B grade therefore occupies a technical position between high-flow ABS and high-heat polycarbonate, not as a direct substitute for either.

The following comparative matrix uses representative ranges for unfilled injection moulding grades and is intended for material-selection screening only.

The comparison should not replace lot-specific data. For applications requiring heat deflection above 120 °C, polycarbonate or a mineral-filled PC/ABS grade may be required. For applications requiring aggressive solvent resistance, PC/PBT or semi-crystalline polyester should be evaluated. For low-temperature impact, unfilled polycarbonate and high-rubber PC/ABS grades tend to outperform standard ABS.

The supplier’s lot certificate defines the operational boundary more tightly than the generic polymer class

Regulatory conformity for Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 3115B requires lot-specific declarations rather than generic datasheet statements. Under REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, the manufacturer or importer must confirm article or substance obligations, including candidate-list substances of very high concern, for the specific lot supplied. Under RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, documentation should state maximum concentration values for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, and polybrominated diphenyl ethers. If food-contact or medical use is contemplated, the manufacturer must supply a positive statement under EU Regulation 10/2011 or ISO 10993-1; general-purpose PC/ABS grades do not automatically carry such status. Processing boundaries already described, particularly maximum residual moisture and melt residence time, should be included in internal quality plans because lot-to-lot variation in stabilizer concentration can shift the practical upper melt-temperature limit by 5–10 °C. Any substitution of the grade in existing tools should be preceded by a short-shot study and gate-freeze time measurement on the production press to account for differences in melt viscosity and pack pressure decay.
