    More Introduction

Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2338A is a compounded polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied in pellet form for injection moulding. The grade identifier 2338A is a supplier-specific designation that corresponds to a medium-flow material balancing melt processability, low-temperature impact, and heat resistance. Unlike commodity ABS, the polycarbonate phase raises the heat-deflection envelope and improves notch resistance; unlike straight polycarbonate, the ABS domains reduce melt viscosity and permit lower melt temperatures. The following information is drawn from supplier trade data and standard PC/ABS processing literature. Lot-specific values must be confirmed against the current manufacturer technical data sheet before mould construction.

Property envelope and benchmark values for 2338A in electronic enclosure applications

The typical property envelope for unfilled flame-retarded PC/ABS formulations is relevant to 2338A. Density values for flame-retarded grades ordinarily lie between 1.12 g/cm³ and 1.20 g/cm³ when measured to ISO 1183-1:2019. Melt flow rate at 260 °C/5 kg is normally reported in the 15 g/10 min to 25 g/10 min range under ISO 1133-1:2022. These values place the grade in the medium-flow cluster used for thin-wall electrical housings. The table below lists the published comparison envelope; the 2338A certificate of analysis may narrow these bands.

What processing parameters govern melt stability below 280 °C?

Pre-drying is non-negotiable. In production environments with ambient relative humidity above 60%, pellets should be dried at 80–90 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant-bed dryer with a supply-air dew point of −30 °C or lower. The target residual moisture is below 0.02 wt%. Moisture above this threshold hydrolyses the polycarbonate phase during plastication, producing carbon dioxide and surface splay. The feed throat should be sealed and a closed hopper used to prevent re-moisture uptake. For a single-screw injection unit, a screw with an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is acceptable. The melt temperature at the nozzle should be held at 240–270 °C; at the upper limit, residence time must not exceed 5 min. Back pressure should be set at 0.3–0.7 MPa and injection speed adjusted to produce a cavity pressure of 80–100 MPa. Mould temperature should be 60–80 °C for acceptable surface replication and reduced frozen-in orientation.

For a capillary rheometer at 260 °C, shear viscosity of medium-flow PC/ABS is typically between 200 Pa·s and 400 Pa·s at 1000 s⁻¹. The injection unit should not be operated below 30% barrel capacity; a small shot in a large barrel increases melt residence time and causes first-shot to last-shot variation in melt flow rate. On production lines with 80-tonne to 160-tonne toggle clamps, cavity pressure transducers in the runner and end-of-cavity positions can detect lot-to-lot viscosity shifts. Screw geometry should use a general-purpose design with a smooth transition and no high-shear mixing torpedo. Intensive mixing sections may generate local melt temperatures above the set-point and destroy the ABS rubber domains. A reverse-flight check ring is acceptable but should be free of dead spots. Nozzle temperature should be kept at or slightly below the front-zone set-point to prevent drool and stringing. Hot-runner manifolds should be naturally balanced; artificial balancing by melt-flow restrictors can create high-shear zones that degrade the polycarbonate phase.

PC/ABS blends degrade by thermo-oxidative chain scission and, in flame-retarded variants, by ester exchange and organophosphate hydrolysis. At melt temperatures above 280 °C, the molecular weight of the polycarbonate phase falls rapidly, reducing notched Izod impact and melt strength. In hot-runner systems, dead spots at >5 mm diameter may create stagnant melt pools. Residence time in the manifold should be kept below 3 min when the melt temperature is at 270 °C. If a tool has eight drops and a shot size that fills only 40% of the barrel, melt residence time will be longer and thermal degradation may appear as yellowing and reduced UL 94 performance. Hot-runner tips should use external heating with independent thermocouples; internal heaters with poor thermal uniformity should be avoided. For flame-retarded 2338A, repeated heat histories above 260 °C reduce phosphorus-based flame-retardant efficacy. On production-scale equipment, this is observed as a loss of V-0 at 1.5 mm wall stock after 20% or more regrind is reintroduced.

Venting depth should be maintained below 0.02–0.03 mm for PC/ABS to avoid flash while allowing gas escape. Poor venting leads to burn marks and weak weld lines after reinforcing ribs. Weld-line strength in 2338A is lower than in the base polycarbonate phase; gate placement should position weld lines away from load-bearing snap features. In a phone charger cover, a side gate with a tab thickness of 1.0 mm reduces weld-line formation in the plug face. On production lines with hot-runner systems, observed failure modes include gate-stringing, yellowing, surface splay, and intermittent V-0 failure. Batch-to-batch melt-viscosity variation may produce sink marks and dimensional variation. These issues are often traced to residual moisture, inactive hot-runner zones, or flame-retardant additive migration. A 24 h trial should include short-shot studies, in-mould pressure monitoring, and UL 94 plaques from first and last shots.

If this grade replaces straight PC in thin-wall power-distribution covers

When a part designer substitutes straight polycarbonate with 2338A, the reduction in melt viscosity allows a 20–30 °C lower melt temperature and generally lower injection pressure. The penalty is a lower heat-deflection temperature: medium-viscosity PC typically yields 120–130 °C HDT/A at 1.8 MPa under ISO 75-2:2013, whereas the 2338A envelope is 92–100 °C. If the application must pass a 125 °C hot-spot test, straight PC or a high-heat PC/ABS should be selected instead. In power-distribution covers with 1.5 mm nominal walls, the 2338A flame-retardant system may provide UL 94 V-0, but the glow-wire ignition temperature should be separately verified to IEC 60695-2-12. Published data for this specific 2338A configuration is limited; a 750 °C glow-wire pass on the production colour and thickness must be established on the actual moulding.

Chemical resistance boundaries for 2338A follow the polycarbonate phase. Ketones, chlorinated solvents, aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, and strong alkaline solutions cause environmental stress cracking under moulded-in strain. Contact with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, or xylene should be avoided in production cleaning operations. Mould release agents containing amines or alkali-metal salts can degrade the polycarbonate phase; silicone-free, neutral-pH release agents are preferred. For painted or plated parts, surface activation by atmospheric plasma or use of an adhesion promoter is required; cross-cut adhesion can be checked under ISO 2409:2013 after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C/50% RH. The grade is not inherently UV-stabilised; exterior applications require a cap layer, pigmented UV barrier, or coating. Weathering data under ASTM G154 Cycle 1 for the unpainted 2338A configuration are limited.

In multi-cavity injection moulding of thin-wall charger housings, gate freeze time and packing pressure determine sink depth. With a melt temperature of 260 °C and mould temperature of 70 °C, unfilled 2338A shows post-mould shrinkage typically in the range 0.5% to 0.7% measured after 24 h according to ISO 294-4:2018. Ribs with a thickness below 0.8 mm may fill at injection speeds above 200 mm/s; however, higher shear heating can push local melt temperature above the degradation threshold. For snap-fit features, the lower flexural modulus relative to mineral-filled PC/ABS requires increased beam thickness. When replacing an existing ABS mould, the gate dimensions should be enlarged slightly because the more amorphous polycarbonate phase freezes with less linear shrinkage, affecting gate seal and pack-out.

For electrical and electronic applications, the supplier should provide a RoHS declaration under Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 and a REACH SVHC statement under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. These documents are lot-specific and should not be assumed from the generic grade designation. If the material is used in food-contact or medical applications, separate migration testing under the relevant national or regional standard is required; standard PC/ABS 2338A is not presumed to be food-contact compliant.

A receiving inspection for 2338A should record melt flow rate, density, moisture content, and flame retardancy on a standard plaque. If the incoming lot differs from the nominal MFR by more than ±10%, processing parameters should be adjusted and the lot tested before release to production. The supplier certificate of analysis should identify the test methods used and the lot production date; a UL 94 Yellow Card, if applicable, covers the specific colourant and minimum thickness only.
