    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Design files referencing Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2332C define the material as a pelletized, unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy intended for injection-molded enclosures, brackets, and structural interior components. Because a full public batch certificate for 2332C is not available at the time of this review, numerical values presented below represent the accepted design envelope for medium-flow unfilled PC/ABS grades and must be replaced by lot-specific supplier data where mandatory. Tensile response is evaluated under ISO 527-2, notched impact under ISO 179-1, and heat resistance under ISO 75-2 or ISO 306.

Relative to standard polycarbonate, the ABS component lowers melt viscosity and improves processability, but it depresses heat deflection temperature and chemical resistance. Relative to standard ABS, the polycarbonate phase raises toughness, particularly at low temperature, but increases drying requirements and sensitivity to alkaline hydrolysis in humid service. The material is therefore specified where notch-insensitive failure and balanced flow are required without the full heat capability of unfilled polycarbonate.

What Distinguishes 2332C from General-Purpose Unfilled PC/ABS Blends?

The principal distinction rests in the lot-specific melt flow and impact balance. Without a public data sheet, the exact melt volume-flow rate cannot be certified, but medium-flow grades typically fall between 10 cm³/10 min and 25 cm³/10 min at 260 °C under 5 kg load per ISO 1133-1:2022. If the supplier lot falls in that range, the material is suited to thin-wall housings with wall thickness from 1.2 mm to 2.5 mm, where excessively high viscosity produces short shots and excessively low viscosity causes flash and sink marks.

Under typical injection shear rates of 500–5000 s⁻¹, capillary rheometry on unfilled PC/ABS commonly records apparent viscosity falling from 250–450 Pa·s to 60–120 Pa·s at 260 °C. This shear-thinning response is dominated by the ABS phase and differs from neat polycarbonate, which retains a more Newtonian plateau over the same shear range. Published data for 2332C specifically is limited, so mold-filling simulation should use a supplier-validated Cross-WLF or Bird-Carreau viscosity model rather than a single MFR point.

Pre-drying is mandatory before molding. The pellets are dried in a desiccant dryer at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h, with dew point at or below -30 °C, until residual moisture remains below 0.02 % verified by ISO 15512:2019. At moisture above 0.04 %, hydrolysis of the polycarbonate phase reduces melt strength, produces silver streaking, and lowers Charpy notched impact. The use of hot-air tray dryers is not recommended because they cannot reliably reach the required dew point under ambient relative humidity above 60 %.

For reciprocating-screw injection molding, a 20:1 to 25:1 L/D general-purpose screw with compression ratio 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 and a free-flow non-return valve is adequate. Barrel settings should be profiled from 240–260 °C in the rear zone to 250–270 °C in the center zone and 260–280 °C at the nozzle. Mold temperature is maintained at 60–90 °C for standard gloss and cycle-time balance; increasing to 80–100 °C improves knit-line strength and surface replication but raises cooling time. Hot-runner manifolds must avoid stagnation zones, and melt residence above 300 °C beyond 5–8 min initiates polycarbonate degradation with carbon dioxide evolution and viscosity loss.

Clamp force requirements are governed by projected area and flow length. Industrial mold-filling estimates for unfilled PC/ABS commonly use 3.5–5.5 kN/cm² of projected area, but thin-wall parts with long flow paths may require higher values. Injection speed should be set to fill a 2 mm wall section in 1.5–3.0 s, followed by a packing pressure of 50–70 % of peak injection pressure and a packing time sufficient to seal the gate and suppress sink marks.

Thermal Performance Indicators and Dimensional Stability Under Load

Heat deflection temperature under 1.80 MPa (ISO 75-2) for unfilled PC/ABS grades typically falls between 100 °C and 115 °C, while Vicat softening temperature B50 (ISO 306) falls between 120 °C and 135 °C. These values are sensitive to the PC/ABS ratio and to the presence of impact modifiers or flow promoters. For 2332C, published data for this specific configuration is limited; if the component must sustain static load above 90 °C, tensile creep modulus should be measured under ISO 899-2 at the service temperature.

Mold shrinkage for unfilled PC/ABS is generally between 0.5 % and 0.7 % parallel to flow and 0.4 % to 0.6 % transverse to flow when measured after 48 h at 23 °C (ISO 294-4). Annealing at 80–100 °C for 1 h per 2 mm section thickness reduces molded-in stress and stabilizes post-mold shrinkage below 0.1 % after subsequent thermal cycling. This is in contrast to glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS, which exhibits lower absolute shrinkage but greater anisotropy, creating warpage in flat parts.

If Flame-Retardant Certification Is Required, the Grade Must Be Validated Against UL 94 Yellow Card Data

Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2332C is not publicly identified as a UL 94 V-0, V-1, or 5VA listed compound. If the component is used in information technology equipment, appliance housings, or power distribution enclosures, a valid UL yellow card must be obtained from the supplier. Generic unfilled PC/ABS without flame retardants typically burns at HB or V-2 under UL 94; phosphate ester flame-retardant grades improve ignition resistance but reduce heat deflection temperature by 10–25 °C and increase hydrolysis sensitivity.

This distinction is operationally significant when replacing a flame-retardant PC/ABS grade. Phosphate ester FR systems often require barrel temperatures below 250 °C to prevent acidic degradation, whereas unfilled non-FR PC/ABS can tolerate 280 °C. The resulting viscosity difference changes pressure loss through hot runners and gates. A direct drop-in replacement without mold-filling simulation is therefore not recommended.

Chemical resistance follows polycarbonate phase sensitivity. Aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents promote environmental stress cracking; exposure tests should follow ASTM D543 or ISO 22088-3 under a fixed strain representing the worst-case molded-in stress. Molded parts must avoid direct contact with toluene, methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, methylene chloride, and trichloroethylene. Isopropyl alcohol is less aggressive, but repeated wiping of a stressed surface can still produce microcrazing.

Surface treatment for painting or adhesive bonding is required. Plasma, corona, or chromic acid etching raises surface energy. A surface energy of at least 38 mN/m measured by contact angle methods (ASTM D7490) is generally necessary for solvent-borne coatings. Mold releases based on amines or zinc stearate can leave low-energy surfaces and should be excluded from the processing specification before downstream decoration.

Adhesive selection must account for the ABS phase. Cyanoacrylate adhesives may stress crack ABS-rich surfaces; two-part polyurethane or epoxy systems provide better stress distribution. For structural joints, lap shear specimens should be tested under ASTM D3163 or ISO 4587 after surface treatment.

Impact Retention in Regrind and Heat-Aging Studies Demands Lot-Specific Validation

Regrind levels up to 20 wt% are commonly used in unfilled PC/ABS if the regrind is dry, clean, and free of degraded resin. Under ISO 179-1/1eA notched Charpy testing at 23 °C, property retention above 85 % after three regrind cycles is typical for well-stabilized medium-flow grades, but 2332C-specific data is not publicly available. At 30 wt% regrind, the failure mode in thick sections may shift from ductile to semi-brittle because the ABS phase loses rubber-phase impact capability after repeated thermal history.

Heat aging at 85 °C and 85 % relative humidity (IEC 60068-2-78) can induce hydrolysis if the ABS phase contains unsaturated diene segments. Antioxidant packages delay but do not eliminate oxidative degradation. Continuous service above 90 °C in humid environments requires tensile impact or notched impact testing after aging intervals of 500 h, 1000 h, and 2000 h to establish the degradation trajectory.

Compared with glass-fiber-reinforced PC/ABS, 2332C is expected to exhibit lower tensile modulus, lower heat deflection, and lower anisotropy. Glass fiber at 20 wt% raises tensile modulus to 3500–5000 MPa, but reduces notched Charpy impact to 10–20 kJ/m² and produces anisotropic shrinkage (ISO 294-4) that increases warpage in flat parts. Unfilled PC/ABS retains better surface gloss, lower density, and improved weld-line strength, but cannot match the creep resistance of glass-filled grades under sustained load.

Compared with mineral-filled low-gloss PC/ABS, the unfilled product generally provides higher flow length and higher impact resistance. Mineral fillers raise flexural modulus and reduce gloss, but they also lower weld-line strength and may require higher packing pressures. If the specification demands low gloss for automotive interior surfaces, a mineral-filled grade may be preferable, but published data for 2332C in that application is limited.

Compared with PC/PBT and PC/ASA alloys, the ABS phase in 2332C provides a different trade-off between low-temperature impact and outdoor color retention. PC/ASA retains gloss and color better under UV exposure; PC/PBT offers improved resistance to automotive fluids and lower moisture uptake, but its notched impact at -30 °C may be lower unless impact modifiers are added. Selection across these alternatives should be governed by a compliance matrix of ISO 527-2, ISO 179-1, ISO 75-2, and SAE J1685 or customer-specific environmental testing.
