Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2318A is a compounded thermoplastic alloy of bisphenol-A polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene supplied in pellet form for injection molding and extrusion. The numerical suffix 2318A identifies a general-purpose unfilled grade with a controlled melt-viscosity profile intended for medium-flow applications. Because PC/ABS alloys are blended from engineering and commodity monomers, the final properties are influenced by the PC-rich continuous phase, the dispersed ABS rubber phase, and the screw design used during melt compounding. In production, the material is compounded on intermeshing co-rotating twin-screw extruders with length-to-diameter ratios between 36:1 and 44:1, using downstream feed zones and vacuum devolatilization to maintain residual moisture below 0.05 % by weight. Each lot is released against a certificate of analysis referencing ISO and ASTM methods.
Commercial PC/ABS alloys are two-phase systems in which the ABS component contributes rubber-toughening sites and the polycarbonate matrix contributes elevated thermal resistance and rigidity. In a general-purpose grade such as 2318A, the polycarbonate content typically falls in the range of 50 wt% to 70 wt%, with ABS supplying the balance. The dispersed rubber-phase morphology is controlled by screw speed, barrel temperature profile, and the sequence of addition. When the rubber-domain size exceeds 0.5 µm, low-temperature notched impact can decline; when the domain size is below 0.1 µm, tensile elongation may decrease. The producer’s compounding parameters are not publicly disclosed, but the mechanical release profile indicates a balanced morphology intended for injection molding rather than sheet extrusion or blow molding.
The supplier’s technical data sheet for this series lists density, melt volume-flow rate, tensile properties, flexural properties, thermal resistance, impact strength, and mold shrinkage under the protocols shown in Table 1. Representative values for unfilled PC/ABS grades in this flow class fall within the following ranges: density 1.13–1.16 g/cm³, tensile stress at yield 48–55 MPa, flexural modulus 1900–2200 MPa, Charpy notched impact strength at 23 °C of 45–65 kJ/m², and heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa of 95–110 °C. The melt volume-flow rate measured at 260 °C with a 5 kg piston load is generally between 14 cm³/10 min and 22 cm³/10 min. These values are not production guarantees; a lot-specific certificate of analysis provides the actual release data. Water absorption after 24 h immersion is typically below 0.3 % by weight, which is relevant for parts exposed to high-humidity environments.

Quality control for the 2318A grade is carried out by injection molding standard ISO 3167 Type A specimens and conditioning them at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 16 h. Batch-to-batch variation in melt volume-flow rate is normally controlled within ±10 % of the nominal release value. When the MVR exceeds 26 cm³/10 min, the product may show lower Charpy impact because molecular weight has shifted downward. Color consistency is measured by spectrophotometry using CIE Lab coordinates, with a ΔE limit agreed between manufacturer and molder. Moisture content in delivered pellets is verified by Karl Fischer titration or equivalent loss-on-drying equipment to confirm that the material has not been exposed to uncontrolled ambient humidity.
Injection molding of Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2318A is constrained by the thermal sensitivity of the polycarbonate phase and the shear sensitivity of the ABS rubber phase. The melt temperature should remain between 255 °C and 275 °C at the nozzle. Below 250 °C, short-shot defects are likely in wall sections below 1.5 mm, while extended exposure above 280 °C accelerates ester-carbonate chain scission and produces silver streaks or surface delamination. Barrel temperature settings on a 1200 kN hydraulic injection molding machine with a 40 mm screw typically use a feed-zone profile of 230 °C to 240 °C, a compression-zone profile of 250 °C to 260 °C, and a metering-zone/nozzle profile of 260 °C to 275 °C. Mold temperature is maintained at 60 °C to 80 °C for standard dimensional stability. Elevated mold temperatures of 80 °C to 100 °C reduce molded-in stress and improve weld-line strength but extend cycle time.
Injection speed should be medium to high, with a fill time of 0.5 s to 1.5 s for a 2.0 mm nominal wall. Holding pressure is typically 40 MPa to 60 MPa hydraulic, and back pressure of 3 MPa to 5 MPa is applied to maintain melt homogeneity without excessive shear heating. Screw rotation speed should not exceed 100 min⁻¹ unless the machine screw is specifically designed for low-shear processing. Residence time at melt temperatures above 280 °C should not exceed 8 min to limit surface splay and the formation of black specks from thermally degraded material. Shut-off nozzles are recommended to prevent drool.
Because the polycarbonate phase is hygroscopic, drying before processing is mandatory. The material should be dried in a desiccant dryer at 90 °C for 4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.02 % by weight. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, hopper dryers must use air with a dew point below −30 °C, and molded parts should be monitored for surface splay or reduced weld-line strength. Regrind may be added up to 20 % by weight when dry and free of contamination. Higher reuse rates reduce Charpy impact retention and increase the risk of color shift. Open pellet storage should be minimized, and unused material should be re-sealed in moisture-barrier packaging.
For hot-runner systems, externally heated manifolds with no internal dead spots are preferred. Gate diameter and land length should be sized to avoid excessive shear heating. In thin-wall electronic housings with nominal wall below 1.2 mm, a nozzle temperature increase of 10 °C to 15 °C may be needed to prevent incomplete filling. Weld-line strength can be improved by raising mold temperature to 80 °C and using sequential valve-gate actuation. Parts ejected too hot may exhibit post-mold dimensional instability; surface temperature at ejection should be below 100 °C unless the part is transferred to a controlled-cooling fixture.
Compared with high-flow PC/ABS grades in the same supplier portfolio, 2318A has a lower melt volume-flow rate and therefore higher melt strength. This difference is advantageous for thick-section parts, gas-counterpressure molding, and hot-runner molds with long flow channels because the melt front remains cohesive and shows reduced jetting. For electronic covers with wall thickness below 0.8 mm, however, the lower flow may require a nozzle temperature increase of 10 °C to 15 °C or an increase in injection velocity. Processors substituting 2318A for a high-flow grade should verify that the existing hot-runner manifold and gate diameter can accommodate the viscosity increase; otherwise, gate freeze-off and hesitation marks may occur.
Compared with halogen-free flame-retardant PC/ABS, the unfilled 2318A base grade is not automatically classified under UL 94 V-0. Flame-retardant variants typically sacrifice 15 % to 25 % of notched impact strength and show lower elongation at break. The 2318A grade should therefore be specified only where flame retardance is not required, unless the end product is evaluated to the applicable IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire requirement at the final wall thickness. The grade also differs from plating-grade PC/ABS in rubber-particle morphology and surface chemistry. Electroplating adhesion requires specific etching and accelerator systems, and published data for this specific configuration is limited. Compared with mineral-filled PC/ABS, 2318A has lower flexural modulus and higher notched impact strength, making it more suitable for snap-fit features and bosses that must withstand repeated assembly stresses.
For consumer appliance housings and power tool enclosures, the material is specified when the part must survive a 0.5 m drop test at 23 °C without cracking and must retain dimensional stability after exposure to 70 °C for 4 h. The combination of Charpy notched impact above 45 kJ/m² and heat deflection temperature above 100 °C under 1.8 MPa is used to screen candidate lots. Injection molds for such housings require polished steel surfaces and generous radiused corners to avoid stress concentration. Hydraulic clamp force requirements for medium-sized housings range from 1200 kN to 1800 kN, depending on projected area and wall thickness. A hot-runner system with individually temperature-controlled nozzles reduces sprueless regrind and improves color consistency.
The grade is normally supplied under a conformity statement for hazardous substance restrictions. The applicable thresholds and methods are summarized in Table 2. End-product certification requires confirmation with the supplier for each batch because formulations may contain processing aids or colorants that affect compliance.

After four-hour desiccant drying at 90 °C, industrial electrical enclosure components have been processed from Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2318A on a 1500 kN injection molding machine with a mold temperature of 80 °C and a holding pressure of 55 MPa. The resulting parts show consistent dimensional stability and welded-joint strength when residual moisture remains below 0.02 %. Continuous contact with strong alkaline cleaning agents or aromatic solvents should be avoided because polycarbonate-rich surfaces undergo environmental stress cracking when molded under high internal stress. Exposure to hot humid air above 60 °C can produce surface hazing over extended periods unless the part is annealed or the mold design minimizes internal stress concentration.
