Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2315B is a pelletized, unfilled thermoplastic alloy based on polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The grade is supplied as an injection-molding resin in natural and black color packages, typically in 25 kg moisture-barrier bags. Because the manufacturer distributes lot-specific compounding records, all numerical values on a commercial certificate of analysis should be read against the test-standard codes shown in the accompanying documentation. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; therefore, the following technical description distinguishes between general unfilled PC/ABS behavior and values that must be obtained from the supplier’s release certificate for 2315B.
Storage prior to melt processing influences part quality more than most process engineers assume. Unopened bags should be kept at ambient temperatures below 30 °C and away from direct sunlight. Once opened, exposure to relative humidity above 60% makes pre-drying unavoidable before any melt-processing step. The grade should not be fed directly from an open hopper in non-conditioned plant air for more than 30 min unless a closed drying and conveying system is used.
Residual moisture must be reduced below 0.02 wt% before extrusion or injection molding. Desiccant dryers with a dew point of −40 °C to −30 °C are specified; hot-air hopper dryers are insufficient when ambient absolute humidity is high. Drying at 100–110 °C for 4–6 h is typical for resin that has been exposed to humid air. Residence time beyond 8 h at 110 °C can initiate yellowing and should be avoided. Moisture content is measured on granules or molded plaques using ISO 15512:2019 or an equivalent calibrated loss-on-drying method.
Melt processing should be carried out on a reciprocating-screw injection-molding machine with screw compression ratio between 2.0:1 and 2.5:1, L/D not less than 20:1, and a non-return valve free of dead spots. A barrel temperature profile rising from 240 °C in the rear zone to 260–280 °C at the nozzle is appropriate. Mold temperature should be controlled at 70–90 °C to obtain acceptable surface finish and reduce internal stress. Back pressure is set at 3–7 MPa for consistent melt density. Decompression before screw recovery should be kept below 3 mm to prevent air entrapment and gas burn marks. Hold pressure and hold time should be established experimentally by gate-seal studies, not by copying machine parameters from other PC/ABS grades.
Total melt residence time should not exceed 8 min at the processing temperature. Above 300 °C, hydrolytic chain scission and butadiene degradation accelerate; the resulting molded parts may show splay, silver streaks, and measurable loss of impact resistance. This is a critical threshold risk for hot-runner systems with large dead spots or for machines with oversized barrels relative to shot weight.
Unfilled PC/ABS alloys in this flow class typically show apparent shear viscosity between 80 Pa·s and 180 Pa·s at 1,000 s⁻¹ under ISO 11443:2021 capillary rheometry at 260 °C. For 2315B, mold-filling simulations require material-specific viscosity data from the supplier rather than generic PC/ABS curves. Short-shot studies are necessary to map actual cavity pressure and to identify a viable hold-pressure window.
The substitution is driven by melt viscosity differences. Straight polycarbonate generally requires melt temperatures above 290 °C for unfilled injection-molding grades. 2315B, as a PC/ABS alloy, flows at 260–280 °C and therefore supports longer flow lengths and lower injection pressure. However, heat deflection temperature under load is lower than that of straight PC. Unfilled PC typically displays HDT/A values of 125–135 °C under ISO 75-2:2013, while unfilled PC/ABS of this class displays 105–125 °C. Notched Izod impact at low temperatures is also lower than straight PC; specifications should include ISO 180/A testing at −30 °C if the part sees subzero service.
Compared with standard ABS, 2315B offers higher heat resistance and improved toughness. ABS grades are generally limited to HDT/A below 100 °C at 1.8 MPa. The trade-off is that 2315B requires more aggressive drying and a higher melt temperature than ABS, and it is more sensitive to moisture-induced hydrolytic degradation. For continuous service above 80 °C, ABS is usually unsuitable, while 2315B may be considered if the load profile remains within the aged property set established by ISO 178:2019 flexural testing after heat aging.
Within unfilled PC/ABS grades, viscosity class differences are material-selection factors. A higher-flow variant may reduce pressure loss by 10–15% in mold-filling simulation against a baseline grade, but it often loses 5–10% of room-temperature impact due to lower molecular weight. 2315B is not a flame-retardant grade. When UL listing is required, a separate phosphorous-based FR PC/ABS should be specified. Phosphorous flame retardants, typically added at 8–15 wt%, reduce melt flow and thermal endurance in exchange for UL 94 performance; a non-FR grade must not be substituted into UL 94 V-0 tooling without full revalidation.
The table below lists the test methods and typical class ranges for unfilled PC/ABS injection-molding resins in the same viscosity band as 2315B. These are not lot-specific guarantees and do not replace the supplier’s release certificate.
| Property | Test standard | Typical class range for unfilled PC/ABS |
|---|---|---|
| Density | ISO 1183-1:2019 | 1.13–1.16 g/cm³ |
| Melt volume-flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C/5 kg | 15–25 cm³/10 min |
| Tensile stress at yield | ISO 527-2:2012 | 50–60 MPa |
| Tensile modulus | ISO 527-2:2012 | 2200–2600 MPa |
| Flexural strength | ISO 178:2019 | 80–95 MPa |
| Notched Izod impact at 23 °C | ISO 180/A | 40–65 kJ/m² |
| Heat deflection temperature A | ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.8 MPa | 105–125 °C |
| Vicat softening temperature B50 | ISO 306:2022 | 125–140 °C |
Specimens for mechanical values are conditioned according to ISO 291:2008 at 23 °C and 50% RH for a minimum of 88 h before testing. The ranges above are not a substitute for the supplier’s release certificate for 2315B. Because compound lot-to-lot viscosity can vary by 5–10%, injection-molding parameters and mold-filling settings should be revalidated after each new lot.
Weld-line performance requires special attention in two-phase PC/ABS alloys. Weld-line tensile strength in unfilled PC/ABS is commonly 20–40% lower than bulk tensile strength when measured by ISO 527-2:2012. The exact reduction for 2315B depends on part thickness, flow length, melt temperature, and mold wall temperature. For thin-wall parts below 1.0 mm, fast filling speeds above 200 mm/s are common in production, but they should only be used after mold-venting verification to prevent gas compression marks.
Hot-runner systems used to mold 2315B should be sized to minimize polymer hold-up volume. Drool, black specks, and inconsistent shot weight after 30 min of interruption indicate thermal degradation. If a hot-runner manifold exceeds 200 bar pressure drop, backflow and stagnation may create degraded material at gate intersections. Valve-gate or direct-gate designs are preferred over hot tip gates with uncontrolled thermal profiling. Manifold temperatures should be maintained at 270–280 °C, tip temperatures at 280–300 °C, and nozzle temperatures at 265–275 °C. Published data for 2315B in hot-runner configurations is limited; therefore, initial trials should use a reduced temperature profile and verify material stability by melt flow rate retention after 10 min residence.
Regrind use is limited to 20 wt% maximum in most unfilled PC/ABS processing guidelines because repeated heat history increases melt flow and reduces impact. For 2315B, light-color external parts may require a lower regrind ceiling of 10–15 wt%; internal dark parts can sometimes accept 25 wt%. All regrind must be re-dried and blended with virgin material. Production control plans should verify melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 and notched Izod impact under ISO 180/A after each 5,000 shots.
Chemical resistance boundaries should be defined before material substitution. 2315B is not recommended for continuous immersion in strong acids, strong alkaline solutions, or chlorinated solvents because the polycarbonate phase undergoes environmental stress cracking and hydrolysis. Short-term chemical resistance should be evaluated with ISO 175:2010 immersion followed by tensile elongation at break after 7 days. Avoid combination with amine-based additives or polyurethane processing aids because amine compounds can catalyze PC chain scission at melt temperature. For outdoor use, UV stabilization must be specified separately; unpainted PC/ABS exposed to xenon-arc light develops yellowing and surface microcracking. Lightfastness testing is performed according to ISO 4892-2:2013 cycle methods with a black-standard temperature of 65 °C.
In automotive interior applications, candidate components include instrument panel trim, steering column covers, center console retainers, and door pull inserts. Qualification for these environments commonly requires heat aging at 80–100 °C for 1,000 h under ISO 188, followed by notched Izod or tensile impact testing. Low-emission interior requirements are evaluated by gas chromatography and odor testing such as VDA 277, VDA 278, and VDA 270. Painted and unpainted surfaces require scratch and mar evaluation; grained surfaces may pass different force thresholds depending on grain depth and hardness, and the appropriate method should be selected from ISO 1518-1:2019 or manufacturer-specific Erichsen scratch procedures.
Electrical enclosure and appliance housing applications can be considered only when the end-use standards permit non-FR PC/ABS or when the final assembly does not require a flame-retardant material. For information technology and audio-video enclosures, a horizontal flame rating is not automatically met by unfilled 2315B. If a UL 94 HB rating is available on the supplier’s yellow card, that rating applies to a specific thickness and color set. Comparative tracking index of unfilled PC/ABS typically falls in the 200–300 V range under IEC 60112; a specific value for 2315B must be confirmed on the certificate because colorants and release agents can shift CTI by 50 V or more. When 2315B is used for thin-wall connector housings, long-term creep under load should be verified according to ISO 899-2:2003 at the maximum service temperature stated on the application drawing.
