    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Zhengxian PC/ABS 2312B is supplied as a compounded polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy in pellet form for injection molding of dimensionally stable enclosures, brackets, and structural interior components. The grade belongs to the non-flame-retardant general-purpose PC/ABS category; manufacturer technical literature for this specific configuration is limited, and the following processing and comparative data are drawn from publicly available industrial data for unfilled PC/ABS alloys with similar morphology. The material differs from neat polycarbonate by lower melt viscosity and reduced notch sensitivity, and from neat ABS by higher heat deflection temperature and greater low-temperature impact retention. It is not a substitute for flame-retardant PC/ABS where end-use components must satisfy IEC 60695-2-12 glow-wire or UL 94 V-0 requirements at specified wall thicknesses.

What Is the Intended Processing Envelope for 2312B?

Drying before molding is required. PC/ABS resins are hygroscopic; residual moisture above 0.02% by weight can hydrolyze polycarbonate segments at melt temperatures above 260°C, producing surface splay, reduced molecular weight, and a measurable loss of notched Izod impact. Desiccant drying should be conducted at 80–100°C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.02 wt%. Closed-loop desiccant dryers with dew point below -30°C are preferred; open hopper units are inadequate at relative humidity above 60%. For production-scale injection molding, barrel temperatures should be profiled from rear zone 220–240°C, middle zone 240–260°C, front zone 250–270°C, and nozzle 250–270°C. Mold surface temperature should be maintained at 60–90°C, with the upper range used when weld line strength, gloss, or dimensional stability is critical. Screw speed should be limited to 40–80 rpm, and back pressure should not exceed 0.3–0.7 MPa to avoid excessive shear heating. General-purpose screws with L/D ratios of 20:1–25:1 and compression ratios of 2:1–3:1 are suitable. Injection speed should be moderate to high for thin walls but must be reduced if gate blush or jetting occurs. Molten PC/ABS should not be held at barrel temperature for more than 10 min; longer residence times produce yellowing and loss of impact. Screw decompression should not exceed 3 mm to prevent air entrapment.

Rheological characterization for comparable unfilled PC/ABS grades under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260°C with a 5 kg load shows melt volume-flow rates commonly in the range 10–25 cm³/10 min. Grades at the lower end of this range tend to retain higher molecular weight and impact resistance; higher-flow variants sacrifice some notched Izod performance. The position of 2312B within this range should be confirmed from the supplier’s certificate of analysis because melt flow rate is lot-dependent and is influenced by regrind fraction. Mold shrinkage for unfilled PC/ABS measured according to ISO 294-4 generally falls between 0.5% and 0.7% in the flow direction and 0.5% to 0.8% transverse to flow. Gate dimensions, rib thickness, and cooling layout should be designed for this anisotropic contraction; multi-cavity tools require flow-balanced runners and uniform mold temperature to prevent cavity-to-cavity weight variation above 0.5%.

Mechanical Property Expectations and Test Method Framework

For unfilled PC/ABS alloys, tensile stress at yield according to ISO 527-2 or ASTM D638-14 is commonly reported in the range 50–60 MPa. Elongation at break may exceed 50% at 23°C. Flexural modulus according to ISO 178 or ASTM D790-17 typically lies between 2000 MPa and 2600 MPa. Notched Izod impact according to ISO 180/1A or ASTM D256-10e1 can range from 40 kJ/m² to 60 kJ/m² at 23°C. Heat deflection temperature under a 1.8 MPa load per ISO 75-2/A or ASTM D648-18 is typically 100–120°C. These values are reference ranges for non-flame-retardant unfilled PC/ABS and are not grade-specific acceptance criteria.

PropertyTest methodReference range for unfilled PC/ABS

    Melt volume-flow rateISO 1133-1:2022, 260°C/5 kg10–25 cm³/10 min
Tensile stress at yieldISO 527-250–60 MPa
    Flexural modulusISO 1782000–2600 MPa
    Notched Izod impact, 23°CISO 180/1A40–60 kJ/m²
Heat deflection temperature, 1.8 MPaISO 75-2/A100–120°C

These reference ranges should not be used for final part acceptance or structural simulation. The manufacturer’s certificate of analysis is the only valid source for lot-specific values. Test specimens should be conditioned according to ISO 291:2008 at 23°C and 50% relative humidity for at least 16 h before testing. Notched Izod values obtained on dry-as-molded samples can be 10–20% higher than conditioned values; direct comparison to supplier data requires identical conditioning. For finite element analysis, tensile modulus and Poisson’s ratio should be obtained from ISO 527-2 tensile tests or dynamic mechanical analysis; datasheet single-point values do not capture strain-rate dependence or non-linear post-yield behavior.

Application literature for similar PC/ABS alloys places them in automotive interior trim substrates, appliance control-panel housings, electronic enclosure shells, non-implant medical device housings, and power tool casings. Injection molding on production machines with clamp force from 800 kN to 10,000 kN is common; part mass varies from thin-wall connectors under 20 g to structural housings above 1 kg. Direct sprue or side gates with generous radii reduce jetting. Mold venting depth of 0.02–0.05 mm is typical for unfilled PC/ABS to avoid burn marks without excessive flash. Snap-fit designs should incorporate generous radii; in unfilled PC/ABS, weld line strength typically retains 50–80% of base tensile strength depending on melt temperature and mold temperature. Higher mold surface temperature within the 60–90°C range improves weld line coalescence.

When Flame Retardant or Chemical Resistance Requirements Exclude This Grade

2312B is a non-flame-retardant grade. If the end-use component must be classified as UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm or must pass glow-wire testing at 850°C according to IEC 60695-2-12, a flame-retardant PC/ABS or PC/ASA compound is required. The presence of brominated or phosphorous flame retardants in such grades can reduce impact strength and heat distortion compared with non-FR material, but those formulations are selected specifically for fire safety compliance. UL 94 HB is sometimes reported for general-purpose PC/ABS at 1.5 mm; HB is a horizontal burn classification and cannot replace V-0, V-1, or V-2 vertical burn classifications.

Unreinforced PC/ABS is not resistant to strong acids, aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, or ketones. Environmental stress cracking can occur under molded-in stress when the part contacts plasticizer migration from flexible PVC, certain hydraulic fluids, or aggressive citrus-based cleaning agents. Chemical resistance should be assessed according to ISO 22088-3 or ASTM D543-21 using the actual service chemical and strain condition. For outdoor unpainted components, PC/ABS has lower ultraviolet stability than PC/ASA or PMMA. Extended UV exposure causes yellowing and surface gloss loss; UV-stabilized PC/ABS or an ASA-based alloy is preferable for exterior applications. Compared with neat PC, PC/ABS offers lower melt viscosity and easier filling of thin walls but lower vicat softening temperature and reduced chemical resistance. Compared with neat ABS, PC/ABS provides higher heat deflection temperature and superior impact retention at temperatures below -20°C, but higher density and more stringent drying requirements. Compared with PC/PBT, PC/ABS generally exhibits better dimensional stability but lower resistance to automotive fuels and solvents.

Thermal Aging and Hydrolytic Stability at Elevated Relative Humidity

Continuous service temperature in air for unfilled PC/ABS is typically 80–100°C depending on applied load and part thickness. At sustained temperatures above 90°C in humid environments, hydrolytic degradation of polycarbonate segments can reduce molecular weight and notched impact. Accelerated aging per ISO 2578 should be used for lifetime prediction; published data for this specific configuration is limited. Thermal oxidative stability depends on the stabilizer package. At 100°C in air, tensile strength retention after 1000 h may exceed 80%; impact retention is often lower and should be measured.

Molded components stored at relative humidity above 60% before painting or adhesive bonding should be pre-dried at 80°C for 2 h to prevent moisture-related surface defects during secondary operations. Regrind content should be limited to 20% by weight for appearance parts and 30% for non-appearance structural parts; repeated heat histories reduce impact strength and darken natural resin. Incoming resin certification should include density, melt volume-flow rate, and notched Izod impact as a minimum. Lot-to-lot variation in impact resistance can be monitored with statistical process control charts on notched Izod and melt flow rate.

    Regulatory itemReferenceStatus for non-FR general-purpose PC/ABS
Restriction of hazardous substancesRoHS 2011/65/EUCompliance relies on supplier certification and lot audit
FlammabilityUL 94Typically HB; not V-0 unless flame retardant
Glow wireIEC 60695-2-12Not normally satisfied at 850°C

Molded parts in this product class are typically assembled by mechanical fastening, ultrasonic welding, or adhesive bonding. Ultrasonic welding requires sufficient energy director geometry and should be conducted with lower amplitude than amorphous neat PC to prevent local degradation at the joint. Adhesive bonding surfaces should be prepared according to the adhesive supplier’s protocol and tested for lap shear strength after conditioning at the upper service temperature. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; each production lot should be validated on the intended molding machine and tool geometry before full-scale release.
