Pre-drying of Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 prior to automotive interior component moulding is set at 80 °C for 2–4 h in a desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -30 °C; residual moisture above 0.1 wt% is associated with splay and silver-streak defects on A-surface instrument-cluster bezels. Batch-to-batch MVR variation is monitored per ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg; when the lot MVR deviates more than ±10 % from the tool validation lot, the filling-to-packing switch-over point is re-established before production restart. For cockpit visible parts, the compound composition is generally held between 60–80 wt% virgin FA18 and 20–40 wt% post-industrial regrind, with 1–3 phr colour masterbatch and 0.2–0.5 phr heat stabiliser; regrind fractions above 40 wt% are not used for Class A surfaces because ISO 179-1/eA Charpy impact values at -30 °C drop below typical OEM acceptance limits. Regrind streams are screened for PVC and acetal contamination because acetal degrades into formaldehyde-driven surface splay and PVC releases HCl that corrodes tool steel. Production is injection-moulded on a ≤24:1 L/D three-zone screw with compression ratio 2.5:1, melt temperature profile 220/235/245 °C, nozzle 240 °C, mould wall temperature 45–65 °C, injection velocity 80–120 mm/s, hold pressure 40–60 MPa, and back pressure 5–10 bar. Emissions compliance is evaluated per VDA 278:2011 with VOC ≤ 100 µg/g and FOG ≤ 250 µg/g for many cockpit applications; flammability is assessed per ISO 3795/FMVSS 302 at a maximum burn rate of 100 mm/min; dimensional stability is checked according to ISO 75-2/Af with typical ABS tolerance requirements of ±0.05 mm on locating features. Terminal products include dashboard trim, pillar covers, centre console side panels, and interior switch bezels.

The electroplating route uses Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 substrate formulated at 100 phr base resin with 0.5–1.0 phr plating-compatible black masterbatch only when colour is required, because mineral fillers and silicone-based mould release agents are excluded from the formulation; inorganic pigment additions above 1 phr are known to reduce chromic acid etch uniformity on moulded surfaces. The substrate is first injection-moulded at a melt temperature no higher than 245 °C and annealed at 70–80 °C for 2 h to relieve moulded-in stress. The plating sequence starts with chromic acid etching at 380–420 g/L and 60–65 °C for 5–10 min to oxidise surface butadiene domains, followed by neutralisation, palladium-tin activation, electroless nickel strike at 0.2–0.5 µm, acid copper 20–30 µm, semi-bright nickel 8–12 µm, bright nickel 5–10 µm, and decorative chromium 0.25–0.5 µm. Peel adhesion is assessed per ISO 4525 and ASTM B604; production experience shows adhesion loss when closed-loop regrind from hot sprues exceeds 20 wt% or when melt temperature exceeds 250 °C, because crosslinked gel particles remain unetched and create skip-plate zones. Terminal parts include automotive radiator grilles, door handles, sanitary faucet covers, cosmetic closures, and appliance knobs.
In small household appliance housing production, Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 is compounded at 85–90 wt% virgin resin and 10–15 wt% closed-loop post-industrial regrind, with 2–3 phr colour masterbatch, 0.1–0.3 phr antioxidant masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 phr external lubricant where gloss uniformity is required. The regrind stream is limited to 30 wt% for structural ribs and to 15 wt% for high-gloss external shells; total regrind above 40 wt% produces a measurable drop in ISO 179-1/eA notched Charpy impact at -20 °C and increases melt-flow drift under ISO 1133-1:2022. The moulding window is constrained between 220 °C and 240 °C melt temperature; below 220 °C, short shots occur in ribs, and above 240 °C, yellowing from oxidised butadiene becomes visible on white housings under CIE D65. Injection is performed on hydraulic machines with clamp force from 1,200–3,200 kN, screw L/D 20:1–24:1, injection pressure 80–120 MPa, and mould surface temperature 35–55 °C. Compliance is to IEC 60335-1:2010+A2:2019 with glow-wire testing at 650 °C for accessible enclosures per IEC 60695-2-11; the grade is limited to UL 94 HB positions unless the final housing is shielded by a metallic internal barrier. Terminal products include vacuum cleaner wheel housings, dust-cup mounts, handle housings, and power-cord strain-relief covers.
Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 is specified for consumer electronics enclosures with wall thickness from 1.2 mm to 2.5 mm. The compound consists of 96–98 wt% virgin FA18, 2–4 phr colour masterbatch, and 3–5 phr conductive carbon black masterbatch only when static dissipation requires surface resistivity below 1×10⁶ Ω/sq; the carbon black addition increases melt viscosity and reduces weld-line strength, so the upper limit is set at 5 phr. Pre-drying is performed at 80 °C for 3–4 h in a desiccant-wheel dryer with dew point ≤ -30 °C; thin-wall flow paths amplify splay defects if moisture exceeds 0.1 wt%. Moulding uses a high-velocity injection profile of 120–180 mm/s, melt temperature 225–245 °C, mould wall temperature 40–65 °C, packing pressure 50–70 MPa, and cooling time scaled to the square of wall thickness. Warpage is assessed after conditioning per ISO 291 at 23 °C/50 % RH with a flatness tolerance of ±0.3 mm over 200 mm; water exposure for 24 h and dimensional change are evaluated per ISO 62. Electrical equipment safety compliance is framed by IEC 62368-1:2018, and the colour and antistatic additives are screened against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC. Terminal products include monitor bezels, router housings, printer side covers, smart-speaker frames, and IoT gateway casings. Published data for FA18-specific volume resistivity after conductive masterbatch dilution is limited; final-part surface resistivity should be verified per IEC 60093.
Under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 and ASTM F963-23, toy construction blocks moulded from Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 are compounded at 100 phr base resin with 1–4 phr colour masterbatch and no external fillers, injection-moulded at 220–240 °C melt and 35–50 °C mould temperature, and tested for migration limits of 19 elements; terminal products include interlocking blocks, building panels, and wheeled toy chassis.
For in-mould decoration control panels and appliance fascia, Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 sheet is extruded from 100 phr FA18 with 0.2–0.5 phr processing aid and 1–2 phr colour masterbatch, using a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1–33:1, screen pack 100/80/60 mesh, die temperature 230–245 °C, and a chill-roll stack held at 70–85 °C. The extruded sheet at 0.6–1.2 mm thickness is thermoformed at 150–180 °C surface temperature and back-injected with ABS FA18 at 220–240 °C melt temperature in the same tool. Adhesion between the decorated carrier film and the ABS substrate is tested per ISO 2409 with a cross-cut classification no worse than 1 after 48 h at 60 °C/90 % RH; production failures are primarily caused by migration of silicone-based slip agents from print ink systems or by plate-out residues on the chill roll. Process control is maintained under ISO 9001:2015, and the printed film is screened against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and EU Regulation 10/2011 only when the decorated surface contacts food. Terminal products include washing-machine control panels, microwave oven fascia, refrigerator control boards, and automotive climate-control display surrounds.

Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 is a commercial acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied for injection-moulded engineering parts in which rigidity, dimensional stability, and moderate impact resistance are balanced. The grade identifier FA18 should be read through the manufacturer’s batch certificate because published data for this exact configuration is limited; the numerical ranges in this document therefore represent reference envelopes for comparable unfilled ABS injection-moulding grades and must be verified against the supplier’s lot-specific datasheet before tool design or part qualification. In unfilled ABS of this class, the continuous styrene–acrylonitrile matrix provides tensile strength and chemical resistance, while dispersed polybutadiene particles contribute impact energy absorption. The glass-transition temperature of the SAN phase is typically near 105–110°C when measured by differential scanning calorimetry at 10 K/min under ISO 11357-2:2020, but processing behaviour is governed by viscous flow rather than a sharp melting point. No assertion is made that the FA18 lot includes flame-retardant, UV-stabiliser, or anti-static modification unless the procurement specification explicitly lists those additives.
For formal classification under ISO 2580-1:2017, the product should be identified by its supplier code, lot number, melt volume-flow rate, impact strength designation, and deflection temperature designation. Without the supplier’s published designation block, the FA18 lot cannot be assigned a formal ISO classification. The first qualification step is therefore to request the moulding-compound datasheet and certificate of analysis covering the shipped lot. In addition, the processor should confirm whether the material is supplied as natural resin, pre-coloured compound, or masterbatch-containing compound, because pigment loading affects flow length, tensile yield stress, and impact toughness.
The differentiation of FA18 from other ABS products is most reliably made through melt-flow rheology, rubber content, and additive package. If FA18 is documented as a general-purpose injection-moulding grade, its melt volume-flow rate at 220°C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 would be expected to fall in a medium-flow band near 15–25 cm³/10 min, whereas extrusion ABS grades of comparable impact rating commonly exhibit 5–12 cm³/10 min. The lower flow of extrusion grades derives from higher melt viscosity and greater molecular-weight retention for parison or sheet strength. High-impact injection ABS compounds may be formulated with rubber contents from 15 wt% to 25 wt%, while general-purpose grades may operate in a lower rubber-content band near 8–15 wt%. The rubber phase content is not visible from granule geometry and must be confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, titration, or supplier documentation.
Flame-retardant ABS products are a separate class. A grade with a UL 94 V-0 classification at 1.5 mm normally contains brominated or phosphorus-based flame-retardant packages that reduce tensile strength, elongation at break, and Vicat softening temperature relative to neat unfilled ABS. The FA18 designation does not by itself certify a UL 94 classification; a separate yellow card or accredited test report under IEC 60695-11-10 should be requested if fire performance is relevant. Against high-flow ABS used for thin-wall connectors and electronic housings, a medium-flow FA18-type material will typically produce shorter spiral-flow lengths and require higher injection pressure for wall sections below 1.0 mm. Against PC/ABS blends, unfilled ABS is expected to show lower Vicat softening temperature, lower multi-axial impact, and lower notched impact at sub-zero temperatures, but it avoids the moisture sensitivity and elevated drying temperature associated with polycarbonate-containing blends.

The values in Table 1 are screening data for similar unfilled ABS injection-moulding grades and must not be used as a certified FA18 specification. Batch-specific values can shift with rubber morphology, acrylonitrile content, pigment type, and regrind content. For applications where a tensile property or impact value is design-critical, the lot should be tested on dry-as-moulded specimens prepared under ISO 294-1:2021 conditions and conditioned according to the relevant test method.
Moisture content is the most direct variable controlling surface quality in ABS melt processing. Unfilled ABS absorbs atmospheric moisture, and although it is less hydrolysis-sensitive than polycarbonate or polyamide, residual moisture above 0.05% produces splay, silver streaking, and local surface delamination on moulded parts. The resin should be dried in a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 2–4 h, using a dew point below -30°C. For material exposed to ambient humidity above 60% RH, drying time should be extended to 4 h or the hopper inlet moisture should be monitored. On production lines, surface splay near hot-tip gates is commonly traced to residual moisture above 0.08%; reducing material moisture to 0.03% typically eliminates the defect in vented moulds.
Thermal stability is bounded by styrene–acrylonitrile matrix degradation and butadiene rubber oxidation. The melt temperature should be maintained at 220–250°C for general-purpose unfilled ABS. Short-term excursions above 270°C are not recommended because volatile degradation products and yellowing increase rapidly. Barrel residence time should be kept below 5 min, and the shot size should be controlled so that the material does not sit in the compression zone during extended machine stoppages. At shutdown, purging with a styrenic or acrylic purging compound reduces black speck formation from degraded rubber residues. Avoid prolonged contact with copper alloy tool surfaces and hot-runner components that can catalyse degradation; nitrided or stainless-steel contact surfaces are preferred for long production campaigns.
Regrind addition should be qualified at the intended use level. Reprocessing alters the molecular weight of the SAN matrix and crosslink density of the polybutadiene phase, so melt volume-flow rate and notched impact should be retested when regrind is added above 15 wt%. If recycled feedstock is blended with virgin FA18 resin, the resulting lot should be checked for contamination by metallic particles, incompatible polymers, and oil residues before entering the drying hopper.
The processing window for thin-wall ABS components is constrained by freeze-off at low mould temperature and by surface jetting at excessive injection velocity. For unfilled ABS reference grades, a melt temperature of 220–250°C and a mould temperature of 30–60°C provide a useful starting range. High-gloss surfaces require the upper end of the mould-temperature range, typically 60°C, while lower mould temperatures increase cycle speed but reduce surface replication and promote internal stress. When nominal wall thickness is below 1.5 mm, injection speed should be set high enough to fill the cavity before the flow front solidifies, but excessive speed can produce jetting, weld-line weakness, and splay from trapped air. A gate velocity in the range of 100–300 mm/s is frequently used for thin-wall ABS, though the optimal value depends on gate geometry and flow length.
Hold pressure and packing time control sink marks, dimensional stability, and part mass. A reference hold-pressure band for unfilled ABS is 60–100 MPa at the material entrance, with packing time based on gate-seal time. Insufficient hold pressure produces sink marks over thick ribs and bosses, while excessive hold pressure increases moulded-in stress and flash risk. Back pressure should be maintained at 0.5–1.5 MPa to homogenise melt temperature and disperse pigment, and screw speed should be kept near 40–80 rpm for 20–25 mm diameter reciprocating screws. A cushion of 5–10 mm should be retained to buffer shot-to-shot variation.
| Processing variable | Reference starting range |
|---|---|
| Drying temperature | 80°C |
| Drying time, desiccant dryer | 2–4 h |
| Residual moisture | ≤0.05% |
| Melt temperature | 220–250°C |
| Mould temperature | 30–60°C |
| Back pressure | 0.5–1.5 MPa |
| Screw speed | 40–80 rpm |
| Hold pressure | 60–100 MPa |
| Cushion | 5–10 mm |
| Barrel residence time | 5 min maximum |
Mould shrinkage for unfilled ABS is anisotropic and must be established on the FA18 production lot using ISO 294-4:2018 measurements. Typical flow-direction values fall around 0.4–0.7%, with transverse values of approximately 0.5–0.8%. Weld lines and filler changes modify these values. For close-tolerance parts, the tool should not be cut to final steel dimensions until a 50–100 shot dimensional capability study confirms shrinkage in the intended gate configuration.
Cooling fixtures are required for flat parts with wall-thickness transitions. Unfilled ABS retains dimensional accuracy after demoulding when parts are cooled uniformly on a jig to below 50°C before stacking. Stacking above the glass-transition threshold can cause flattening or warpage under part weight. For hot-runner moulds, gate temperature should be controlled independently from nozzle temperature, and the hot-runner manifold should avoid stagnant zones that allow material to accumulate and degrade during colour changes.
Low-temperature impact performance is governed by rubber-phase morphology, particle size distribution, and matrix molecular weight. Notched Charpy impact values measured at 23°C under ISO 179-1/1eA are not conservative predictors of service at temperatures below -10°C. When sub-zero impact is required, the FA18 lot should be tested at the lowest service temperature using conditioned specimens and the same notch preparation that will be used for incoming material control. Tensile yield stress under ISO 527-2:2012 remains relatively stable across normal room-temperature service, but elongation at break can decrease substantially with accelerated ageing because rubber-phase oxidation embrittles the dispersed butadiene particles.
Chemical exposure influences failure through environmental stress crazing and cracking. ABS has limited resistance to esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, and concentrated organic acids. Contact with such media should be evaluated under ISO 22088-3 or an equivalent stress-rupture method at the intended service temperature and applied strain. The processor should not rely on immersion testing alone when moulded-in stress and external load are present; a stressed specimen test is required to detect craze-resistant or craze-prone lot variation.
Thermal ageing above 60°C in continuous air exposure can reduce notched impact significantly within several hundred hours, especially in unpigmented or lightly stabilised ABS. Long-term service above 70°C under continuous mechanical load should be supported by creep data generated on FA18 lots, not on generic ABS reference values. The transition from ductile to brittle failure can occur at a narrow temperature or ageing interval and is not controlled solely by nominal tensile strength.
Procurement specifications for Dongguan Zhengxian ABS FA18 should require batch-specific melt volume-flow rate, Charpy notched impact, tensile yield stress, flexural modulus, and Vicat softening temperature. For applications subject to regulatory review, request documentation covering REACH SVHC content, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, and FDA 21 CFR if food-contact status is claimed. The material should be stored in unopened containers below 30°C and below 70% RH; opened containers should be resealed immediately and dried before processing. In the absence of complete published data for this specific FA18 configuration, lot-specific qualification remains the only reliable basis for release into load-bearing, cosmetic, or regulatory-critical applications.
