Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 18NB is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer grade supplied by Dongguan Zhengxian Plastic Technology Co., Ltd. The product is a pelletized moulding resin identified by the trade designation ABS 18NB. The numeric suffix 18 is conventionally associated with a nominal melt mass-flow rate of 18 g/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with a 10 kg load, but the controlling values for production are the lot-specific certificate of analysis and the manufacturer’s current technical datasheet. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; processing guidance in this document is therefore drawn from the ABS designation system of ISO 2580-1:2002 and from standard unfilled ABS industrial practice rather than from an unverified supplier claim.
Incoming material should be accompanied by a certificate reporting melt mass-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with 10 kg load, tensile yield stress and elongation at break under ISO 527-2:2012, flexural modulus under ISO 178:2019, Charpy notched impact strength at 23 °C under ISO 179-1:2010, heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.8 MPa, Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306:2022 at 50 °C/h and 50 N, density under ISO 1183-1:2019, and residual water content under ISO 15512:2019. The purchase specification should also record base colour, pellet geometry, and any proprietary additive package declared by the producer.
ABS absorbs moisture at the acrylonitrile sites, and processing with a residual water content above 0.05 % by mass, measured by ISO 15512:2019, can generate splay, silver streaks, and localised polymer degradation. The resin should be dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point at or below −30 °C at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h before melting. If the ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, the dried resin must be transferred in closed hoppers or re-dried immediately before use because surface moisture re-adsorption can exceed 0.03 % within 30 min. Over-drying above 90 °C for more than 6 h can oxidise the butadiene phase and shift the base colour toward yellow; this is an operational boundary rather than a general drying recommendation.
Melt temperature should be maintained between 180 °C and 230 °C in the barrel, with the nozzle zone set from 210 °C to 230 °C. A starting barrel profile of 180 °C, 200 °C, 215 °C, and 220 °C from rear to nozzle is typical for a screw with an L/D ratio of at least 20:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1. Melt temperature should be verified by an insertion thermocouple rather than inferred from barrel setpoints. Total residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 5 min; if hot-runner stoppage exceeds 10 min, the barrel should be purged with general-purpose polystyrene or recycled ABS. Injection pressure in an unfilled ABS tool is normally set between 60 MPa and 120 MPa, but the actual value is cavity-pressure dependent and must be established on the production machine.
Mould temperature is typically held between 40 °C and 70 °C. Higher cavity-surface temperatures improve weld-line strength and gloss but increase cooling time; lower temperatures reduce cycle time but may increase frozen-in stress. For components with wall thickness below 1.5 mm, mould temperature should be raised to the upper half of the range to avoid premature solidification before full packing. Vent depths for ABS are typically 0.02 mm to 0.05 mm; insufficient venting can produce burned marks at the fill end. For thick sections above 3.0 mm, packing pressure should be stepped from 50 MPa to 80 MPa and held for 0.5 s to 1.0 s per millimetre of nominal wall to reduce sink marks. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; processor validation is required.
The melt channel of the screw should be hardened for ABS grades, and the non-return valve should provide positive shutoff because a worn valve can cause shot-weight variation. When shot-weight variation exceeds 0.4 % of the mean, the check ring and screw tip should be inspected. Clamp force should be calculated from projected area using a cavity pressure of 25 MPa to 40 MPa at gate freeze-off, with a safety factor applied according to machine and mould deflection limits.
The expected higher melt-flow behaviour of ABS 18NB distinguishes it from standard-impact ABS grades with nominal melt mass-flow rates in the 5 g/10 min to 12 g/10 min range. Higher flow can reduce injection pressure and fill thin wall sections of 1.0 mm to 1.5 mm, but it may also correspond to lower notched impact strength because shorter molecular chains reduce entanglement density and allow faster crack propagation under Charpy impact loading. A processor transferring an existing mould from a low-flow ABS should revalidate impact performance using ISO 179-1:2010 and tensile behaviour using ISO 527-2:2012; the required hold-pressure adjustment is tool-specific and should not be assumed.
The grade is not by designation a flame-retardant product. If a UL 94 V-0, V-1, or V-2 rating is required, the supplier must provide an active UL yellow card that lists the exact grade, colour, and minimum thickness. Compared with high-gloss ABS moulding compounds, surface gloss is largely determined by mould cavity polish, melt temperature, and mould surface temperature; it should be measured on plaques using ASTM D523-14 at 20°, 60°, and 85° geometries. Compared with glass-filled ABS, the 18NB designation does not imply fibrous reinforcement; ash content, if relevant, should be tested under ISO 3451-1:2019. Compared with heat-resistant ABS grades containing α-methylstyrene or maleimide modifiers, ABS 18NB is not expected to provide the same heat deflection temperature unless the producer’s datasheet explicitly reports an ISO 75-2:2013 value above 100 °C. When compared with ABS/polycarbonate blends, ABS 18NB is not implied to carry the same low-temperature impact resistance or heat stability; a blend must be specified when ISO 179-1:2010 Charpy values below −30 °C or a heat deflection temperature above 110 °C is required.
Potential use sectors include thin-wall electrical enclosures, appliance fascia panels, and structural brackets where the component can be validated to product-level standards such as IEC 62368-1 for audio/video and information technology equipment or IEC 60335-1 for household appliances. The material can be processed on conventional reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines; mould-filling studies with short shots should be used to set the transfer position from filling to holding. For extrusion, a metering screw with a length of 24 L/D to 30 L/D is common, but the grade is not supplied for medical packaging unless the supplier declares compliance with the relevant pharmacopoeia and migration protocol.

Operational boundaries for ABS 18NB include avoidance of direct contact with polyvinyl chloride at melt temperature, because liberated hydrogen chloride can corrode tooling and attack the butadiene phase. Strong oxidising agents and aromatic halogenated solvents should not be used for purging or cleaning. Colour masterbatch should use an ABS-compatible carrier resin; masterbatch let-down should follow the supplier’s documented ratio, and when the supplier limit is not provided, dispersion should be verified on injection-moulded plaques by measuring black specks at 20× magnification. The material should not be blended with amine-containing compounds without confirmatory compatibility testing. Regrind can be added up to 20 wt% after drying; if regrind ratio exceeds 20 wt%, mechanical property retention should be verified for each lot. Storage in sealed bags below 60 % relative humidity and below 35 °C is recommended.
Production-scale qualification should be performed on the intended injection moulding machine with the actual hot-runner system, rather than extrapolated from small laboratory mixers. Moulding trials should sample parts after 8 h of continuous running to detect lot-to-lot differences and moisture ingress. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and batch-to-batch variation must be captured by retaining a standard lot for comparison.
