    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Commercial identification of Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 18003 requires a distinction between the trade designation, the base acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene chemistry, and the lot-specific certificate of analysis. The product is positioned as an injection-moulding ABS in the medium-to-high melt-flow segment, where cavity fill in wall sections below 2.0 mm is balanced against notched impact resistance. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; numeric windows in this document therefore refer to comparable ABS classes evaluated under ISO and ASTM methods and are not certified lot guarantees. The supplier’s certificate of analysis should be requested for melt mass-flow rate, tensile yield stress, notched Izod impact energy, Vicat softening temperature, density, and residual moisture. Procurement documents should tie those values to the order code ABS 18003 rather than to the designation alone.

Does the Grade Number 18003 Encode Melt Flow, Rubber Content, or a Process Window?

No single ISO or ASTM standard governs the sequence of digits in Chinese ABS trade designations. Some producers assign the initial digits to a nominal melt mass-flow class, while others use internal production sequence codes. In trade literature, 18003 is commonly read as a melt-flow class near 18 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022, with the remaining digits indicating a rubber-particle-size distribution or stabilizer package. This interpretation is not universal, and the supplier’s lot certificate remains the controlling specification. A lot showing 16 g/10 min would still be considered within normal blending variation by some compounders, but that difference can shift switch-over pressure and gate freeze time in a long-flow runner. For this reason, tooling engineers should avoid fixing gate diameter and runner cross-section on the assumption that the number 18 is an exact melt-flow guarantee.

These values expose the central trade-off. The high-flow class comparable to ABS 18003 gives up roughly 4–8 K of Vicat softening relative to a general-purpose injection ABS, and 10–20 K relative to a heat-resistant ABS variant. Its notched Izod range is lower because high-flow grades often use a lower rubber content or lower molecular-weight SAN matrix to reduce melt viscosity. Relative to a flame-retardant ABS, the non-FR class usually shows higher weld-line integrity and lower melt viscosity only when the FR additive loading is absent; ignition resistance is not equivalent unless a UL 94 listing is explicitly attached. Relative to an ABS/PC alloy, the 18003 class trades away low-temperature impact and heat resistance but is less shear-sensitive and can be processed at lower mould temperatures. Compared with high-impact ABS grades that quote notched Izod values above 350 J/m, ABS 18003 belongs to a lower-viscosity branch. That choice lowers filled-part stress but also reduces the maximum snap-fit deflection before fracture. Snap-fit applications should be evaluated with displacement-controlled testing rather than stress-controlled tensile data because notched Izod transitions do not predict snap-fit performance reliably. A cantilever snap fit with a thickness of 2.0 mm may require reduced deflection or a larger root radius when the material is a high-flow ABS rather than a medium-impact ABS. High-heat ABS grades are preferable when the component must survive paint-bake ovens above 100 °C; flame-retardant ABS grades are required when an enclosure must pass UL 94 V-0 at minimum thickness; ASA or AES capstock is preferred for unpainted outdoor surfaces; HIPS is lower cost but has lower stiffness and chemical resistance.

Moisture uptake before drying is a processing variable that cannot be inferred from the order code. ABS of this flow class absorbs enough surface moisture during storage in humid Guangdong warehouses to produce splay, silver streaking, and inconsistent weld-line strength if the pellets are fed directly to the barrel. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of −20 °C or lower should be used at 80 °C for 2–4 h; at ambient relative humidity above 60% RH, the residence time should be extended to 4 h. Residual moisture should be verified below 0.05 wt% before start-up. Overdrying above 90 °C can cause pellet clumping, yellowing in natural grades, and feed-throat bridging. On production machines, a dry-air hopper receiver is preferred to open hoppers when the ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%.

Temperature Gradients Across Barrel Zones and Nozzle

Melt-temperature settings for an ABS of the 18003 flow class are typically set from 200 °C in the rear zone to 240 °C at the nozzle, with the feed zone held below 180 °C to prevent bridging. The nozzle is commonly set 5–10 °C below the metering zone to reduce drool and stringing. Above 250 °C, butadiene oxidation and SAN chain scission begin to shift the melt toward yellow and reduce notched impact energy at an accelerating rate. Total barrel residence time should be held below 5 min when shot weight is less than 20% of barrel capacity; at greater than 8 min, black specks and viscosity drift can appear even at 220 °C. For a mid-sized reciprocating screw of 25–40 mm diameter, a screw speed of 50–100 rpm and back pressure of 0.3–0.8 MPa are ordinary starting points. High shear heating at the gate is a more serious risk than high barrel temperature; local temperature can exceed the bulk melt temperature by 20–40 K in poorly sized gates or excessive injection velocity, causing gate blush and delamination at part surfaces.

Laboratory capillary rheometry under ISO 11443 provides a more useful gate-design input than a single melt-flow value. A high-flow ABS comparable to ABS 18003 may show apparent viscosity of 150–300 Pa·s at 220 °C and 1000 s⁻¹, falling from 700–1200 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹. The shear-thinning behaviour supports thin-wall fill, but it also means gating that imposes excessive shear can lower local viscosity abruptly and cause jetting. Mould-filling simulation should therefore use viscosity data from the actual lot rather than a generic ABS database.

Parts typically produced from this class include LCD monitor bezels, keyboard frames, computer mouse shells, vacuum cleaner housings, power-strip enclosures, and appliance control-panel trim. The material is suited to thin-wall injection moulding when the flow-path-to-wall-thickness ratio is kept below 150:1; for a 1.2 mm wall, that condition implies a flow path not exceeding 180 mm from the gate. Fan gates or film gates are preferred over pin gates for keyboard frames because they distribute shear heat more evenly and reduce jetting. Clamp force requirements for typical housings range from 80 to 250 tonnes on servo-hydraulic or toggle machines. For sheet extrusion, the melt temperature should be held at 210–230 °C, but deep-draw thermoforming grades usually require a higher molecular-weight ABS; ABS 18003 should not be specified for heavy-gauge thermoforming unless extrudate sag resistance and melt strength are validated on a single-screw line with a barrier screw. RoHS compliance should be confirmed against Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH against Regulation 1907/2006 at the lot level, particularly if recycled feedstock is used.

When Regrind Ratios Exceed 20 wt% in Production

Regrind inclusion shifts the property envelope of ABS 18003 more than a single-point datasheet indicates. Ground sprues, runners, and rejected parts that have experienced one thermal history typically remain usable at regrind fractions up to 20 wt%, provided the material was not over-dried or degraded during first moulding. Above 30 wt%, notched Izod impact resistance can fall by 10–25% relative to virgin pellets because rubber-phase crosslinking and SAN chain scission reduce energy dissipation. Melt mass-flow rate may rise due to chain scission, producing easier fill but lower melt strength and a greater tendency to flash. In production-scale moulding, flow-class drift is frequently observed first as a reduction in switch-over pressure rather than as a visible defect. Incoming inspection should include melt-flow rate according to ISO 1133-1:2022, a control chart for the supplier-confirmed flow band, and periodic notched Izod testing under ASTM D256-23. If painted or metallised reject parts are incorporated, paint residue should be removed by melt filtration or avoided entirely because interface contamination can generate local delamination.

Chemical resistance of ABS 18003 is comparable to other general-purpose ABS grades. The material is attacked by ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents; these can induce environmental stress cracking in parts under tensile load. Methanol and ethanol are less aggressive but should not be specified for load-bearing snap-fit structures without immersion testing. Amine-based processing aids and certain hindered-amine light stabilizers can cause discolouration in light tones, and PVC contamination as low as 0.5 wt% can evolve acid gas at melt temperature, producing black specks and odour. Outdoor use without an ASA capstock or effective UV stabiliser is not recommended because the butadiene phase is susceptible to photo-oxidation, leading to chalking and embrittlement. If the application requires UL 94 V-0 or 5V classification, the supplier’s Yellow Card for the exact formulation must be checked; a general-purpose ABS class is more likely to be rated HB or unlisted. Food-contact, medical, and toy-grade statuses do not follow from the order code and require specific written confirmation against 21 CFR 177.1020 or the relevant toy safety standard.
