Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 18001 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied by Dongguan Zhengxian in pelletised form for injection moulding and extrusion. The designation 18001 is an internal grade code; it does not map to a standardised ASTM D4000 cell class or ISO 19065 designation. Because a verified manufacturer data sheet was not available for this compilation, all numerical values stated below are class-typical ranges for unfilled general-purpose ABS with similar melt-flow architecture and are not batch-release limits for a specific lot.
Moisture control is the primary processing boundary. Pellet water content above 0.10 wt% at the feed throat promotes hydrolysis of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase and produces surface splay on moulded parts. A closed-loop desiccant dryer with air at 80°C to 90°C and a dew point at or below -40°C should reduce pellet moisture below 0.05 wt% within 2 h to 4 h. On production lines where dried pellets are conveyed through open hoppers at ambient relative humidity above 60%, splay has been observed when open-hopper residence exceeds 30 min; hopper loading should therefore be interval-controlled rather than continuous.
Barrel temperature profiling for a general-purpose screw with 20:1 to 25:1 L/D typically starts from 180°C in the feed section, rises to 210°C to 230°C in the compression and metering zones, and holds nozzle temperature at 220°C to 240°C. Melt temperature measured by needle pyrometer should remain between 210°C and 240°C. Residence time above 260°C should not exceed 5 min; longer exposure degrades the polybutadiene phase, causing yellow shift and measurable loss in notched Izod impact.
Injection moulding on clamp forces from 800 kN to 12,000 kN typically uses peak hydraulic injection pressure of 70 MPa to 120 MPa for thin-wall parts. Packing pressure is normally 50% to 70% of peak, with pack time derived from gate freeze-off. Screw back pressure of 0.3 MPa to 0.7 MPa and decompression of 2 mm to 5 mm reduce melt-pressure drool and gas traps. For extrusion, the same melt-temperature range applies; a breaker plate with screen pack and gear pump can control surging.
Melt viscosity under shear is a critical discriminator for the 18001 class. At 220°C and 10 kg, melt volume-flow rate is expected in the range 18 cm³/10 min to 35 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022. This medium-flow window is suitable for housings with wall thickness 2.0 mm to 3.0 mm and flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios up to 150:1. Lower-flow ABS grades may require higher melt temperatures but provide greater impact; higher-flow grades fill thinner sections at the expense of low-temperature ductility. At apparent shear rates from 100 s⁻¹ to 1,000 s⁻¹, the melt displays pseudoplastic behaviour with a power-law index of approximately 0.30 to 0.40. This strong shear thinning enables filling of ribs and bosses, but injection-speed changes produce more significant pressure variations than in HIPS. A fill time of 1.0 s to 2.5 s is typical for a housing with 2.5 mm wall thickness.
Under short-term tensile loading at 23°C, unfilled ABS of the 18001 class typically yields at 40 MPa to 52 MPa when tested under ASTM D638-14 Type I at 50 mm/min or ISO 527-2:2012 1A at 50 mm/min. Elongation at yield is 2.2% to 3.0%, while nominal elongation at break is 10% to 30% depending on specimen thickness and butadiene content. Tensile modulus is 2,200 MPa to 2,800 MPa. Flexural modulus under ISO 178:2019 at 2 mm/min is 2,300 MPa to 2,900 MPa; equivalent values under ASTM D790-17 Method I fall within the same envelope.
Impact behaviour is temperature- and notch-radius dependent. Notched Izod impact at 23°C is 18 kJ/m² to 35 kJ/m² under ISO 180:2023/1A. At -30°C, Charpy impact can fall to 7 kJ/m² to 12 kJ/m². These ranges integrate the effects of butadiene content, rubber particle size distribution, and moulded-in orientation. Heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-1:2020/A at 1.82 MPa is typically 85°C to 100°C, and Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306:2022 method B50 is 95°C to 110°C.
The table lists class-typical unfilled ABS values; the user should obtain a certificate of analysis from Dongguan Zhengxian for exact lot data.

If the 18001 code is a medium-flow injection-moulding grade, its functional differentiation from other styrenic products is best evaluated by flow-path length in thin-wall tooling, notched impact at 23°C, and gloss retention after moulding. Compared with high-impact ABS with notched Izod above 35 kJ/m², the 18001 class generally flows better by 15% to 30% in equal-thickness spiral-flow testing, but it sacrifices some low-temperature ductility. Against high-flow electroplating ABS, the 18001 class may show poorer plate adhesion because electroplating requires a dispersed polybutadiene content sufficiently high to form etchable micropores after chromic acid treatment.
HIPS shows lower melt flow and lower notched Izod, but it costs less and is less sensitive to moisture. HIPS heat deflection temperature at 1.82 MPa is typically 70°C to 85°C, below that of ABS. The 18001 class also provides higher surface hardness and chemical resistance against aliphatic hydrocarbons than HIPS, but it is not inherently UV-stable and will chalk under outdoor exposure unless stabilised with a UV additive or coated. Compared with polycarbonate/ABS blends, the 18001 class cannot match load-bearing performance above 80°C continuous, but it processes on smaller machines and avoids polycarbonate hydrolysis when dryers are inadequate.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 18001 class | 18–35 cm³/10 min | 18–35 kJ/m² | 85–100°C | Moisture-induced splay above 0.10 wt% water |
| High-impact ABS | 10–20 cm³/10 min | 35–50 kJ/m² | 80–95°C | Reduced thin-wall fill |
| High-flow electroplating ABS | 30–60 cm³/10 min | 15–25 kJ/m² | 80–92°C | Higher etch sensitivity; lower low-temperature ductility |
| HIPS | 6–15 cm³/10 min | 6–12 kJ/m² | 70–85°C | Lower solvent resistance; lower gloss ceiling |
Regulatory evaluation for unfilled ABS should include RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Typical unfilled ABS without brominated flame retardants or cadmium-based pigments can meet the homogeneous-material maximum concentration values: lead 0.10 wt%, mercury 0.10 wt%, cadmium 0.01 wt%, hexavalent chromium 0.10 wt%, and PBB/PBDE 0.10 wt%. Food-contact and medical applications cannot be assumed from these criteria; a specific declaration under FDA 21 CFR 181.32 or EU 10/2011 is required, and published data for this specific Dongguan Zhengxian lot is limited.
The styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase resists dilute aqueous acids and alkalis under intermittent contact, but aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents soften or stress-crack the matrix. Moulded-in stress near gate regions is a root cause of environmental stress cracking in the presence of plasticising oils or solvent-based cleaners. A constant-strain chemical compatibility test at 0.5% outer-fibre strain for 24 h at the intended service temperature is recommended before production release.
Tooling design for the 18001 class follows general unfilled ABS practice. Gate thickness should be at least 60% of the part wall thickness, and gate land length should be less than 1 mm for thin walls. Runner diameters below 5 mm in cold-runner tools can cause premature gate freeze-off in thick sections. Gate freeze time for an unfilled ABS cold edge gate of 1.5 mm thickness is commonly 1.5 s to 3.0 s after pack initiation. If packing pressure is removed before gate freeze, reverse flow creates sink marks and void formation at rib intersections; ultrasonic wall-thickness measurement or X-ray imaging is used to detect voids in sections above 4 mm.
Mould shrinkage under ISO 294-4:2018 is typically 0.4% to 0.7% parallel to flow and 0.5% to 0.8% perpendicular after 24 h at 23°C. Post-mould annealing at 70°C to 80°C for 2 h lowers internal stress but can increase additional dimensional change by 0.1% to 0.2%. Ejection whitening occurs when demoulding force exceeds the surface yield stress of the cooled part; core draft angles below 0.5° and ejection speed above 200 mm/s are common contributors. A cavity texture of VDI 24 may require an additional 1° draft on the textured side to avoid scuffing. Weld lines formed by multi-gate filling reduce tensile strength by 15% to 25% relative to unaffected material. Venting at weld locations reduces entrapped air and improves weld-line integrity; vent depth should be 0.02 mm to 0.04 mm.
Unfilled ABS regrind from sprues and reject parts can be reincorporated at 20% to 30% by weight without marked reduction in tensile yield stress, provided the regrind is re-dried below 0.10 wt% moisture. On a reciprocating-screw injection machine with a 25 mm diameter screw, repetitive heat histories shift the molecular weight distribution: after the third heat cycle, notched Izod impact is commonly 8% to 15% lower than virgin material. Regrind fraction above 40% is not recommended for parts requiring notched Izod above 20 kJ/m². Batch-to-batch variance in unfilled ABS from affected production lines is usually observed as a melt-flow shift of less than 8% around the supplier’s nominal value. A pre-production rheology check using a capillary rheometer or injection-pressure curve is more sensitive than density alone for detecting lot variation.
Surface treatments for ABS 18001 include solvent bonding with MEK-based adhesives and painting with acrylic or polyurethane coatings. Flame or corona pretreatment can raise surface energy to 38–46 dyn/cm, but the treatment must be uniform to avoid localised oxidation. Cyanoacrylate adhesives bond quickly to ABS surfaces, while silicone-based lubricants used in ejector maintenance can inhibit paint adhesion; such lubricants should be kept away from cavity surfaces. Colour masterbatch addition at 2% to 4% is typical; high-loader masterbatch with low carrier melt-flow can shift melt-flow rate by 10% to 15%. Pre-blending by tumble mixer for 10 min is adequate, and throat dosing requires calibration before production.
