Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 15NA is supplied as a natural-colour, general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin. The grade designation places it in the medium-flow injection-moulding category, with a nominal melt mass-flow rate of 15 g/10 min measured under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C and 10 kg load. Melt flow rate alone is not sufficient for lot release because molecular weight distribution, rubber-phase grafting, and particle size distribution influence notched impact and gloss retention more strongly than the nominal flow value. The product is specified for thin-wall electronic enclosures, appliance covers, and automotive interior trim where wall thickness falls between 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm and where tensile yield stress above 40 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012 is required. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; representative ranges in this document derive from medium-flow ABS grades with an equivalent nominal melt flow rate and must be confirmed against the supplier certificate of analysis before production release. The material is not to be assigned to load-bearing structural applications without explicit creep-rupture and fatigue validation under ASTM D2990 and ISO 527-2:2012.
Before processing, pellet moisture must be reduced below 0.05 %. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40 °C and inlet air temperature of 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h is required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Inadequate drying produces splay on flat mouldings and reduces weld-line strength, a failure observed on multicavity electronic-housing tools when open-loop hopper dryers are substituted for closed-loop desiccant units. For injection moulding, a general-purpose screw with an L/D ratio of 20:1 and compression ratio of 2.5:1 is suitable. Melt temperature should be maintained between 230 °C and 260 °C, with a barrel profile from the feed throat of 180–200 °C, 210–230 °C, 220–240 °C, and nozzle temperature of 230–250 °C. Mould temperature between 40 °C and 80 °C is used: lower values preserve cycle time, while higher values improve surface gloss and bond-line toughness. Injection pressure should be set to achieve filling within 0.5 s to 1.5 s for wall thickness up to 2.5 mm. Packing pressure should be 50–70 % of peak injection pressure for 2–4 s per millimetre of nominal wall thickness. Clamp force requirement can be estimated from projected area, and production-scale settings of 800–1200 kN are typical for housings up to 400 g shot weight. Prolonged residence time above 260 °C or hold-up in hot-runner manifolds exceeding 5 min causes yellowing and measurable loss of notched impact strength.
Thermal degradation during repeated reprocessing is governed by residence-time distribution and shear heating, not merely set-point temperature. At a shear rate of 1000 s⁻¹, the effective melt viscosity of a medium-flow ABS such as 15NA is typically in the range of 120–180 Pa·s at 240 °C, which permits filling of thin ribs without exceeding 140 MPa injection pressure. Capillary rheometry according to ISO 11443:2021 should be included in first-article validation because lot-to-lot variation in the low-cis butadiene rubber phase can shift viscosity by ±10 %. In twin-screw extrusion for compounding or colour modification, screw speed between 200 rpm and 400 rpm with an L/D ratio of 40:1 and barrel zones set at 180–240 °C maintains dispersion without excessive shear-induced rubber crosslinking. Vacuum venting at -0.08 MPa is necessary after side-feeding masterbatch at zone 6 to strip residual moisture and volatile processing aids. Pelletized compound should be re-dried to 0.03 % moisture before injection moulding. Compatibility with additive packages is not unconditional. Stearate release agents at or below 0.2 wt% are generally tolerated, but amine-based heat stabilizers and residual free amines in colour concentrates can cause yellowing and surface frosting. PVC contamination above 0.5 wt% leads to black specks and should be controlled by separate material handling.
Specification limits for medium-flow ABS 15NA should be written into the incoming inspection plan rather than left to nominal datasheet values. The following ranges are representative tolerances for a 15 g/10 min medium-flow ABS grade and may be narrowed only by supplier data.
| Property | Test method | Representative range | Lot-release trigger |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melt mass-flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022, 220 °C, 10 kg | 13–17 g/10 min | Deviation greater than ±2 g/10 min from nominal |
| Tensile yield stress | ISO 527-2:2012, 50 mm/min | 40–48 MPa | Below 38 MPa |
| Tensile modulus | ISO 527-2:2012 | 2200–2600 MPa | Below 2000 MPa |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178:2019, 2 mm/min | 2200–2500 MPa | Below 2000 MPa |
| Charpy notched impact, 23 °C | ISO 179-1:2010, notch A | 18–25 kJ/m² | Below 15 kJ/m² |
| Heat deflection temperature | ISO 75-2:2013, 1.8 MPa | 88–96 °C | Below 85 °C |
| Vicat softening temperature | ISO 306:2022, 50 °C/h, 50 N | 95–102 °C | Below 92 °C |
| Density | ISO 1183-1:2019 | 1.04–1.06 g/cm³ | Outside ±0.02 g/cm³ |
| Mould shrinkage, flow direction | ISO 294-4:2018 | 0.4–0.7 % | Greater than 0.8 % |
Notched impact values in the table are thickness-dependent. At 3.2 mm, Charpy notched impact under ISO 179-1:2010 is typically 18–25 kJ/m², whereas at 6.4 mm the value may shift because of plane-strain constraint. The product should not be specified for sub-zero impact unless low-temperature testing under ISO 179-1:2010 at -30 °C is completed. Melt flow rate outside the agreed band may indicate SAN matrix molecular weight drift or rubber content change. Incoming resin with pellet moisture above 0.05 % should be dried before sampling. Ash content above 0.05 % suggests contamination or filler carryover and should trigger quarantine pending Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy under ASTM D5477-18 or similar.
Substitution of Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 15NA with high-heat ABS or PC/ABS is not a direct mechanical translation. High-heat ABS grades produced with α-methylstyrene or maleimide modifiers raise heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2:2013 at 1.8 MPa from the 88–96 °C range to 100–110 °C, but require melt temperatures of 260–280 °C and exhibit lower flow. That substitution reduces mould filling length and increases clamp force demand. Conversely, high-flow ABS grades with melt mass-flow rates above 25 g/10 min allow lower injection pressure but sacrifice notched impact and chemical resistance. High-gloss ABS grades achieve 20° gloss above 90 GU under ASTM D2457-21 through controlled rubber particle size below 0.2 μm, while ABS 15NA in natural or coloured form typically yields a lower gloss, matte-to-semi-gloss surface because of larger rubber agglomerates. PC/ABS blends may show better low-temperature toughness, with typical Charpy notched impact above 35 kJ/m² at -30 °C, but their continuous-use temperature, solvent resistance, and melt processing window differ and, in some cases, show more susceptibility to alkaline cleaners at pH above 10.
Glass-fibre-reinforced ABS grades, typically containing 10–20 wt% short glass fibre, increase flexural modulus to 4000–6000 MPa under ISO 178:2019 but decrease melt flow and produce anisotropic mould shrinkage. Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 15NA, as an unfilled grade, remains near-isotropic with mould shrinkage of 0.4–0.7 % under ISO 294-4:2018. In thin-wall moulding, glass-filled grades may create weld lines with only 30–50 % of unfilled tensile strength, whereas the unfilled 15NA weld line typically retains 60–80 % of the parent tensile yield stress. These differences are measurable and should be compared using ISO 527-2:2012 specimens moulded from a dual-gate tool. For applications requiring surface painting or metallization, the low mould shrinkage and non-filled surface of 15NA reduce sink-mark deviation in comparison with glass-filled grades, but adhesion must still be verified on production-textured surfaces using cross-cut testing under ISO 2409:2020.
The resin is sold as a non-hazardous thermoplastic for industrial conversion. Compliance claims must be tied to the lot safety data sheet and should not be assumed from grade name alone. For EU market access, the supplier must confirm REACH registration under EC 1907/2006 and SVHC content below 0.1 wt% for candidate-list substances as per Article 33. RoHS compliance under Directive 2011/65/EU requires lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE each below 0.1 wt% in homogeneous material, and cadmium below 0.01 wt%. For food-contact use, ABS is subject to 21 CFR 177.1020, which prescribes extraction limits and end-testing; general-purpose 15NA should not be specified for food contact without final article testing. Under China GB food-contact legislation, GB 4806.6-2016 may apply where the resin is used in food-contact plastics and specific migration limits must be established on the finished article.

Lot acceptance should include melt flow ratio, ash content, moisture, and colour coordinates after standard moulding. Black specks above 10 per kg are typical for general-purpose natural grades; exceedance indicates thermal degradation in the compounding line. For colour-critical applications, CIE Lab values should be established on 2 mm plaques after measurement under D65/10° illuminant. Halogenated flame retardants should be added only with antimony synergists when a UL 94 V-0 classification is required; the unmodified 15NA is typically rated HB under IEC 60695-11-10 and is not sold as a self-extinguishing grade. Processors should maintain separate material handling for PVC and glass-filled compounds to avoid cross-contamination. No production release should be based solely on the supplier nominal datasheet without comparing the incoming lot against the quality agreement limits in the two tables above.
