    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Manufactured by Dongguan Zhengxian Plastic Materials Co., Ltd., ABS 12NB is a pelletized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied as a general-purpose injection-molding grade. The designation 12NB identifies a specific viscosity class and additive package within the manufacturer’s portfolio, but it does not by itself encode a globally harmonized property class. Purchasing and quality departments should therefore treat the lot certificate of analysis and the seller’s technical data sheet as the controlling specification. Published data for this specific configuration is limited in open technical databases; accordingly, the processing and qualification guidance in this section is built around the established industrial envelope for medium-flow, unreinforced, non-flame-retardant ABS resin classes, with all values subject to confirmation against Dongguan Zhengxian’s current technical bulletin.

The resin is typically specified for rigid parts that require a balance of impact resistance, dimensional stability, and moderate resistance to household chemicals. Applications commonly considered for this category include electronic equipment enclosures, small appliance housings, automotive interior trim clips, furniture edge-protection profiles, and general mechanical covers. Selection generally occurs where the specified notched Izod impact requirement falls between 15 kJ/m² and 25 kJ/m² at 23 °C according to ISO 180/1A, combined with a tensile yield stress above 40 MPa when measured by ISO 527-2/1A/50. Because ABS 12NB is not a flame-retardant grade, applications requiring UL 94 V-0 at wall thicknesses below 2.5 mm ordinarily require a change to FR-ABS or PC/ABS rather than revalidation of this resin.

How Should Dryers and Melt Preparation Be Configured for ABS 12NB?

ABS pellets are not strongly hygroscopic, but residual surface moisture must be controlled because absorbed water vaporizes at the melt front and causes splay, silver streaking, internal voids, and reduced weld-line integrity. A drying condition that reduces lot moisture to below 0.1 % by weight, as measured by ISO 15512 or ASTM D6869, is appropriate for injection molding. Desiccant dryers should maintain a dew point equal to or better than −30 °C and an airflow of approximately 3.8 m³/h per kg/h of polymer throughput. A drying temperature of 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h is typical for general-purpose ABS. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, or when the pellets are stored in opened gaylords, drying time should be extended to 6 h. Over-drying above 95 °C must be avoided because prolonged exposure can cause pellet sticking and can degrade the impact-modifier phase, producing a yellow shift and reduced lot impact retention.

Melt preparation for medium-flow ABS should be conducted on a reciprocating single-screw machine with a screw length-to-diameter ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.8:1. Start-up barrel settings can be arranged from feed to nozzle as 180 °C to 200 °C in the feed zone, 200 °C to 220 °C in the compression zone, 220 °C to 240 °C in the metering zone, and 230 °C to 250 °C at the nozzle. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should not exceed 260 °C. Residence time above 240 °C should remain below 10 min. If a hot-runner interruption lasts beyond 20 min while manifold temperature remains above 250 °C, carbonized material can generate black specks and gloss loss. A styrenic purge compound in an amount of 1.5 kg to 3 kg per 20 mm of screw diameter is commonly used to clear the screw surface after such degradation events.

Back pressure should be held between 0.5 MPa and 1.5 MPa to stabilize plasticating length and homogenize color dispersion without excessive fiber-like shear heating. Screw speed in the range 40 min⁻¹ to 80 min⁻¹ on a 40 mm to 60 mm screw is typically adequate. Higher screw speeds can add more than 20 °C of shear heat and push the melt beyond the thermal stability limit even when barrel set points appear conservative. Use of a general-purpose three-zone screw is acceptable for natural or predispersed color lots; a mixing section is preferred only when masterbatch addition exceeds 2 wt% and dispersion is variable.

In cold-runner tools, medium-flow ABS freezes rapidly after injection stops, so gate dimensions must be selected to avoid early gate freeze-off before packing completion. Treated gate diameters should not fall below 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm for small components, and runner diameters should be increased by 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm when filling lengths exceed 100 mm. Mold cavity wall temperatures from 40 °C to 60 °C are standard. High-gloss surfaces may require mold temperatures up to 80 °C, although cycle time then increases. Venting should be provided at the end of fill with vent depths between 0.02 mm and 0.04 mm and land lengths of 3 mm to 6 mm; inadequate venting produces burn marks at the flow front and false short-shot alarms. Part wall thickness should be maintained between 2.0 mm and 3.5 mm unless flow simulation and tool trials confirm otherwise. Injection velocity should be moderate to high, but shear rates at the gate should not exceed approximately 100 000 s⁻¹ to avoid melt fracture, gate blush, and surface delamination stress.

Physical Property Verification and Specification Compliance for Injection-Molded Components

The table below provides a representative test matrix for lot qualification of a medium-flow ABS injection-molding grade. The listed windows are drawn from publicly reported ABS resin class data and are not certified Dongguan Zhengxian values; they form a feasibility reference that must be superseded by the supplier’s certificate of analysis.

Mechanical property measurements should be performed on dry-as-molded specimens conditioned according to ISO 291 at 23 °C and 50 % RH. Tensile modulus reporting follows ISO 527-2/1A/50; flexural strength and modulus follow ISO 178 or ASTM D790. Rockwell hardness, if required, is typically reported using ASTM D785 on the R scale. Lot-to-lot variation in polybutadiene rubber particle size and SAN molecular weight can shift notched impact by more than 15 % even when melt flow rate remains within specification, so incoming quality plans should include impact testing of the first production lot and periodic retained-lot checks.

European market declarations must be obtained from the supplier for Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restricted substances and for Regulation EC No 1907/2006 Candidate List SVHCs. In the absence of supplier documentation, screening can be performed using X-ray fluorescence and wet-chemical techniques in accordance with IEC 62321-3-1 and IEC 62321-8. The grade should not be considered food-contact approved solely from its chemical family; if food or oral-contact use is proposed, separate evaluation under 21 CFR 181.32 or European Regulation EU 10/2011 is required. Outdoor use of natural or unpigmented ABS is not recommended without an additional UV stabilization package because the polybutadiene phase undergoes photo-oxidative degradation and surface yellowing after direct weathering.

For chemical service, continuous contact with methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, ethyl acetate, toluene, xylene, chlorinated hydrocarbons, and strong organic acids can dissolve or stress-crack the styrene-acrylonitrile phase. Resistance to aqueous acids, alkalis, saline solutions, and non-ionic detergents is acceptable at room temperature, but continuous exposure above 60 °C in alkaline media can degrade the rubber phase. Qualification for chemical resistance should be performed according to ISO 175 or ASTM D543 with the exact service fluid and stress state, because environmental stress cracking is strongly load-dependent. Any claim of a specific chemical compatibility must be verified with molded bars, not pellet-compressed plaques.

When Comparing ABS 12NB with High-Flow, High-Impact, and Flame-Retardant Grades

Compared with high-flow ABS grades having melt volume-flow rates above 25 cm³/10 min, this medium-flow category requires higher injection pressure but provides greater melt strength and a reduced tendency for jetting in parts with abrupt wall-thickness transitions. High-flow grades reduce cycle time in thin-wall parts with flow paths below 1.5 mm, whereas medium-flow ABS is better suited to nominal walls above 2.0 mm and parts with internal cores or ribs. Compared with high-impact ABS, which may exhibit notched Izod values above 30 kJ/m², the general-purpose grade retains higher stiffness and surface hardness but gives lower low-temperature ductility. ABS 12NB should not be used for impact-critical components at service temperatures below approximately −20 °C unless low-temperature Izod testing demonstrates adequate retained energy.

Compared with flame-retardant ABS, the absence of brominated or organophosphorus flame-retardant additives simplifies processing in terms of mold plate-out and screw wear, but the material will not meet UL 94 V-0 at thin sections. Electrical and electronic end products may still use ABS 12NB for enclosures where the governing standard permits HB classification, but the final product flammability rating is a function of wall thickness, colorants, and assembly design and must be verified on finished parts. In applications subject to glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11, the absence of flame-retardant additives requires careful evaluation of ignition temperature and flame persistence.

Relative to PC/ABS blends, ABS 12NB processes at lower melt temperatures, typically avoiding the 260 °C to 280 °C processing range required by many PC/ABS products. The trade-off is lower heat resistance and lower sub-zero impact. Relative to polyamide 6 or 66, ABS 12NB absorbs less moisture and exhibits better dimensional stability in humid environments, but aromatic solvents and ketones remain severe incompatibilities. Polyamide grades generally require more aggressive drying and have higher melt temperature thresholds; ABS 12NB therefore presents fewer start-up risks on general-purpose injection molding lines not designed for high-temperature engineering resins.

Regrind use should be limited to 20 wt% or less in production parts unless the manufacturer’s technical approval permits a higher fraction. Repeated melting reduces the impact-modifier phase and can shift color from natural or white lots. If the part is intended for paint adhesion or electroplating, surface preparation differs from polypropylene or polyamide; ABS is generally receptive to chromic acid etching for electroplating, but the selected grade must be evaluated for selective plate adhesion and thermal cycle performance under the OEM’s automotive or appliance specification. Where geometric tolerances are tightened by assembly requirements, mold shrinkage should be measured after 24 h and 48 h post-molding because amorphous ABS continues dimensional relaxation after ejection.

No product specification should be finalized without a production-scale trial using the actual tool, colorant, regrind content, and dryer configuration. Injection molding trials should record melt temperature, mold temperature, injection velocity profile, hold pressure, hold time, cooling time, and peak cavity pressure. A design-of-experiments around the start-up values presented above is recommended for first-article qualification. If the application requires continuous exposure to automotive windshield washer fluid, aqueous urea, or strong alkaline cleaning agents, chemical resistance must be confirmed by ISO 22088-3 environmental stress-cracking evaluation on molded parts under the actual strain condition before series release.
