    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Zhengxian ABS 11NB is supplied as a pelletized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer for injection-molding and extrusion applications. The grade designation 11NB identifies a general-purpose ABS resin within the manufacturer’s styrenics portfolio; it is not formulated as a flame-retardant, antistatic, or UV-stabilized grade unless a compliant masterbatch is introduced during compounding. The material is supplied in natural resin form and can be processed in custom color at the converter. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; therefore, the specification envelope should be read as representative of general-purpose ABS of this viscosity class, with lot-specific values confirmed on the certificate of analysis.

What Lot-Acceptance Metrics Define the 11NB Specification Envelope?

Lot acceptance should be based on the following metrics, tested under the stated standard methods. The ranges in Table 1 are not batch-specific guarantees; they represent the general-purpose ABS class typically associated with an 11NB designation. Where the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis provides a tighter value, that value controls.

Property Test method Typical class range 11NB verification
Melt volume-flow rate ISO 1133-1:2022, 220°C/10 kg 8–20 cm³/10 min Certificate of analysis
Density ISO 1183-1:2019 1.04–1.07 g/cm³ Certificate of analysis
Tensile yield stress ISO 527-2:2012 38–48 MPa Certificate of analysis
Tensile modulus ISO 527-2:2012 1.9–2.4 GPa Certificate of analysis
Charpy notched impact, 23°C ISO 179-1:2020 15–25 kJ/m² Certificate of analysis
Heat deflection temperature, 1.80 MPa ISO 75-2:2013, method A 75–85°C Certificate of analysis
Vicat softening temperature, 50 N ISO 306:2022, method B50 95–105°C Certificate of analysis
Moisture content at packing ISO 15512:2019 ≤0.05 wt% Certificate of analysis

Pre-drying is the first processing constraint for 11NB. A desiccant-bed dryer with a dew point of ≤-20°C and a return-air temperature of 70–80°C should maintain pellets for 2–4 h prior to molding; residual moisture above 0.05 wt% produces splay, silver streaking, and reduced weld-line strength in parts with wall thickness below 2.5 mm. On injection molding machines with a general-purpose screw of 20:1 to 24:1 L/D, barrel set points from feed to nozzle typically rise from 180°C to 240°C, with nozzle temperature held near 230°C. Mold surface temperature should be maintained between 40°C and 70°C; lower mold temperatures reduce gloss and increase molded-in stress, while higher mold temperatures delay ejection and extend cycle time. Injection velocity is set to fill the cavity in 0.5–2.0 s for thin-wall housings, with transfer to holding pressure at 95–98% volumetric fill. Hydraulic back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa and screw rotation speed of 60–120 min⁻¹ are typical for dispersion of color masterbatch; higher back pressure may overheat the melt and generate yellowing. Cushion should be held at 5–8 mm to maintain consistent shot weight and avoid nozzle drool. For sheet extrusion, a single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D, a barrier screw, and a 40/60/80 mesh screen pack is used with die temperatures of 210–230°C and a polished roll stack at 70–90°C.

    When Flame-Retardant or High-Heat Requirements Preclude General-Purpose 11NB

The substitution of 11NB into a housing designed for flame-retardant ABS requires a review of the end-use flammability rating. General-purpose ABS of this type is usually classified as UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm; it does not provide V-0 at 1.5 mm unless compounded with a flame-retardant package. For electrical enclosures under IEC 62368-1 or UL 62368-1, external enclosure materials may require V-1 or V-0; 11NB is not formulated to meet those ratings. Compared with high-heat ABS grades containing α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomers, 11NB exhibits a lower heat deflection temperature under load; the general-purpose band of 75–85°C at 1.80 MPa is 15–25°C below high-heat grades that reach 95–110°C under the same method. Where continuous service temperature exceeds 70°C under mechanical load, a high-heat grade or ABS/PC alloy should be selected. Conversely, 11NB processes at lower melt temperatures than high-heat grades and may show less tendency to gas or plate out on mold surfaces during long runs. Against high-flow ABS grades with melt volume-flow rates above 30 cm³/10 min, 11NB is positioned for balanced flow and impact; thin-wall parts with flow length-to-thickness ratios above 150:1 may require a high-flow variant.

Mechanical Response Under Standardized Loading Rates Reveals Ductile-to-Brittle Sensitivity

When tested as dry-as-molded specimens in accordance with ASTM D638-14, general-purpose ABS of the 11NB class typically exhibits tensile yield stress between 38 MPa and 48 MPa and elongation at break from 10% to 30%, depending on rubber phase content and specimen conditioning. Notched Izod impact under ASTM D256-10(2018) at 23°C commonly falls between 150 J/m and 350 J/m, but the value drops sharply at low temperature; at -30°C the same geometry may fall below 80 J/m. This ductile-to-brittle transition is characteristic of the polybutadiene phase and must be considered for automotive interior or outdoor enclosure applications. Under flexural loading to ISO 178:2019, flexural modulus is typically 1.9–2.4 GPa, and flexural strength at 3.5% strain is 55–70 MPa. Because ABS is notch-sensitive, design radii below 0.5 mm and weld lines should be avoided or moved out of high-tensile areas.

Regulatory Compliance Boundaries and Documentation Requirements

Documentation for 11NB shipments typically includes RoHS and REACH declarations when requested. General-purpose ABS compounds can comply with RoHS 2011/65/EU, Annex II restrictions if heavy-metal pigments and brominated flame retardants are not introduced during compounding; the 11NB grade should be specified as unpigmented or colored only with compliant masterbatch. Under REACH EC 1907/2006, the supplier should confirm that candidate-list substances of very high concern are not intentionally added above 0.1 wt%. The grade is not supplied with a food-contact clearance under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 unless explicitly stated on the certificate of compliance. For electrical applications, the material alone does not establish end-product compliance with IEC 62368-1 or UL 746C; the complete enclosure must be tested.

Regulatory document or standard Scope Typical 11NB position
RoHS 2011/65/EU Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr(VI), PBB, PBDE Complies in unpigmented form or with compliant masterbatch
REACH EC 1907/2006 SVHC Candidate List No intentional SVHC above 0.1 wt%; verify per shipment
UL 94 Flame rating Typical HB at 3.0 mm; not V-0
FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 Food-contact ABS Not claimed unless stated

The operational boundary of 11NB is defined by moisture, melt residence time, and incompatibility with certain additive packages. Melt residence time at 240°C should not exceed 10 min; longer residence times shift molecular weight distribution and increase yellowing. The grade should not be combined with amine-based nucleating agents, some hindered amine light stabilizers, or unneutralized brominated flame retardants because decomposition products can attack the polybutadiene phase or cause mold fouling. Regrind usage should be limited to 20–30 wt% in non-appearance parts unless process capability studies demonstrate acceptable lot-to-lot impact retention; higher regrind levels reduce notched impact and increase black speck contamination in natural resin. Storage should be in sealed, moisture-proof sacks in conditions below 60% RH; opened bags should be re-dried before processing. Production-scale molding of 11NB in multi-cavity hot-runner tools has shown that undersized gates below 0.8 mm diameter can raise shear heating and produce gate blush; gates of 1.0–1.5 mm diameter or edge gates with land lengths below 1.0 mm typically provide stable fill. For extrusion sheet, barrel residence time above 8 min at 230°C may generate gel particles.
