    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Yitong Plastic ABS 121H is supplied as an injection-moulding terpolymer in the high-impact ABS subcategory. The 121H designation appears in distributor literature with a nominal melt flow rate of 23 g/10 min at 220 °C under a 10 kg load when tested in accordance with ISO 1133-1:2022. Density is reported at 1.04 g/cm³ by ISO 1183-1:2019, with an unfilled, non-flame-retardant composition. Published data for the specific Dongguan Yitong repackaged lot is limited; incoming lot certification should therefore be compared against an approved production baseline before new-tool qualification.

The notched impact response of 121H derives from a grafted polybutadiene phase dispersed in a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer matrix. Under ISO 180/1A:2000 notched Izod testing at 23 °C, distributor values for the 121H designation commonly fall near 30 kJ/m², with low-temperature impact at -30 °C typically reduced to approximately 10 kJ/m². The same test in a low-rubber general-purpose ABS may return 15–20 kJ/m² at 23 °C. The higher rubber volume in 121H lowers flexural modulus slightly relative to that of low-rubber injection grades; reported flexural modulus is 2300 MPa by ISO 178:2019. This trade-off is relevant when ribbed panels require both impact strength and dimensional stiffness.

What Differentiates 121H from Flame-Retardant and High-Heat ABS Variants?

Placement of 121H within an ABS portfolio is governed by three formulation variables: rubber content, halogen content, and the use of α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomers. Standard flame-retardant ABS grades obtain UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm through brominated flame retardants and antimony trioxide; 121H remains unfilled and non-flame-retardant, usually rated UL 94 HB. That distinction matters in low-voltage enclosures where regulatory requirements do not mandate V-0 and where secondary operations such as hot-plate welding or UV coating benefit from a non-halogenated surface. High-heat ABS grades using α-methylstyrene raise heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa to 100–110 °C; 121H heat deflection temperature is reported near 85 °C by ISO 75-2:2013 method A. Consequently 121H is not appropriate for continuous under-hood service but remains suitable for interior automotive trim and appliance control panels.

Pre-drying is the first control point. ABS 121H absorbs atmospheric moisture; when residual moisture exceeds 0.05% by weight, moulded surfaces exhibit splay and notched impact can fall below specification. In dehumidifying hopper dryers, a setpoint of 80 °C for 2–4 h brings moisture below 0.02% for material exposed to 60% relative humidity. Drying beyond 4 h at 80 °C is generally harmless but raises energy load without additional benefit. On horizontal injection machines with clamp force from 1200 kN to 2500 kN, barrel settings of 200 °C rear, 220 °C middle, 230 °C front, and 240 °C nozzle are typical. Melt temperature measured by air shot should remain between 220 °C and 250 °C. Below 220 °C, cavity fill becomes pressure-limited in thin walls; above 250 °C, butadiene rubber phase degradation accelerates, producing yellowing, odour, and reduction in impact strength during residence times longer than 5 min.

Mould temperature controls gloss, shrinkage, and residual stress. At 40 °C mould surface temperature, weld-line strength in multi-gate parts drops relative to a 70 °C setpoint by up to 15% in notched impact tests, a known failure mode in high-impact ABS. For hot-runner systems, manifold and nozzle setpoints should not exceed 250 °C, while gate tip temperature is maintained 5–10 °C below the melt temperature to prevent drool. Screw speed should remain at 40–70 rpm for screw diameters between 40 mm and 60 mm, with back pressure of 5–10 MPa to disperse additives without excessive shear heating. Injection pressure should follow part geometry; thin-wall parts with flow length-to-thickness ratios above 150:1 may require peak injection pressure of 100–130 MPa.

Do not purge with PVC-based compounds. Thermal dehydrochlorination of PVC residues generates hydrogen chloride, which attacks the polybutadiene phase and produces surface bloom. If changeover from PVC is required, use an ABS purge compound or general-purpose polystyrene purge material, and maintain barrel temperatures below 250 °C. Regrind from sprue and runner should be limited to 20–30% by weight unless property retention is revalidated.

    Mechanical, Thermal, and Electrical Baseline

Table 2 lists typical values for ABS 121H drawn from distributor technical literature. The values are not specification minima, and part-level qualification should account for colour concentrates, regrind content, flow orientation, and moisture history. Property retention in complex mouldings depends strongly on weld-line location, packing pressure, and gate geometry.

When 121H Replaces Flame-Retardant Polycarbonate in Non-V-0 Electronic Housings

Thin-wall electronic enclosures with a maximum service temperature below 60 °C and no live-contact insulation requirement can be moulded from 121H where a V-0 halogenated PC/ABS is not mandated. Wall stock as low as 1.8 mm can be filled with a high-flow 121H melt at 240 °C using a hot-runner valve-gate system, provided that gate diameter is not less than 0.8 mm and vent depth is maintained at 0.02–0.03 mm. The comparative advantage is process energy: barrel temperatures are 30–50 °C lower than those required for PC/ABS, reducing thermal degradation risk and shortening start-up purge time. Impact performance of 121H at 1.8 mm wall stock remains above common office-appliance drop-test requirements, but interior bosses and snap-fit arms should be radiused to 0.5 mm minimum root radius to avoid notch-sensitive brittle failure.

Typical applications documented for ABS 121H include appliance control-panel frames, vacuum-cleaner housings, electronic enclosures, toys, and interior automotive trim. For each application, the design must respect the material’s chemical resistance limits: ketones, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons attack the SAN matrix, while unsaturated oils and fatty acids can stress-crack under moulded-in strain. Stress-crack resistance is improved by annealing at 70 °C for 2 h after machining or adhesive bonding. Where prolonged outdoor UV exposure is required, a carbon black or hindered amine stabiliser package is necessary, because unmodified ABS embrittles after 12–24 months of direct weathering. Compliance documentation for the unmodified grade typically references RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II as amended by (EU) 2015/863, and REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 Article 33 SVHC disclosure requirements. For food-contact or medical use, end-user suitability must be confirmed by the compounder, because the base grade is not automatically compliant with FDA 21 CFR clearance or EU 10/2011.

Regrind and Weld-Line Strength Control Batch Acceptance

Incoming lot-to-lot variation in melt flow rate can shift cavity fill behaviour in multi-cavity tooling. A control limit of ±2 g/10 min from the approved baseline is a practical acceptance window for critical thin-wall parts. When regrind content exceeds 30% by weight, moulders should revalidate notched Izod impact and tensile yield because repeated thermal history reduces butadiene-phase toughening efficiency. Weld-line strength in high-impact ABS typically retains only 40–60% of the bulk unnotched value; weld lines should therefore be positioned away from snap-fit roots and screw bosses in part design. Batch release should include notched Izod at 23 °C, melt flow rate, density, and residual moisture. If the incoming material exceeds 0.05% residual moisture, it should be returned to a dehumidifying dryer at 80 °C before processing. These controls reduce field failures associated with brittle weld lines, splay, and dimensional drift in non-flame-retardant ABS enclosures.
