Dongguan Xiongfa Plastic ABS 15E1 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied in pellet form for injection moulding and, under restricted conditions, extrusion. The grade identifier 15E1 places the material in the medium-flow ABS category, in which melt viscosity is selected to balance filling pressure against impact retention in thick-section and semi-structural mouldings. Lot documentation from the supplier normally includes melt volume-flow rate, residual moisture, and colour values. The following technical description is based on ISO and ASTM methods commonly applied to unfilled ABS; it is not a substitute for lot-specific certificates of analysis.
Dongguan Xiongfa Plastic ABS 15E1 belongs to the polymer family of ABS resins, in which a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer forms the continuous phase and polybutadiene rubber particles form the dispersed toughening phase. The phase morphology is controlled during grafting and compounding. Rubber content in this viscosity class is typically in the range of 10–20 wt%; however, published data for the exact 15E1 formulation is limited. The material is supplied as an unfilled and undyed grade, although precoloured or masterbatch-modified lots may vary in melt flow and impact performance. Representative lot characteristics for medium-flow unfilled ABS of the 15E1 class are shown below.
| Property | Test method | Typical range |
|---|---|---|
| Density | ISO 1183-1 | 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ |
| Melt volume-flow rate, 220 °C/10 kg | ISO 1133-1:2022 | 12–18 cm³/10 min |
| Tensile yield stress | ISO 527-2 | 40–50 MPa |
| Flexural modulus | ISO 178 | 2000–2500 MPa |
| Notched Izod impact, 23 °C | ISO 180/1A | 18–35 kJ/m² |
| Vicat softening temperature, 50 °C/h, 50 N | ISO 306/B50 | 95–105 °C |
Tensile yield stress is commonly determined at 50 mm/min on type 1A specimens after conditioning at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity for at least 16 h according to ISO 291. Flexural modulus is measured at 2 mm/min. Values outside these bands can indicate altered rubber content, broad molecular weight distribution, or moisture contamination. The resin should not be specified for load-bearing components solely on the basis of nominal tensile yield stress; fatigue and notch sensitivity require part-level validation.
Before melt processing, ABS 15E1 requires drying in a desiccant hopper dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h to reduce residual moisture below 0.05 wt%. Higher ambient relative humidity above 60% may extend drying time to 4 h or longer, especially when regrind is present.
Processing on reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines with a screw diameter of 45 mm and a length-to-diameter ratio of 20:1 has been used for medium-flow ABS. Barrel temperature settings are typically graduated from 200–210 °C in the feed zone to 230–240 °C in the metering zone, with nozzle temperature between 220 °C and 235 °C. Keeping melt temperature below 250 °C is critical; residence times above 5 min at 240 °C can accelerate degradation of the polybutadiene phase, producing yellowing, surface splay, and loss of notched impact strength.
Mould surface temperatures between 40 °C and 80 °C are appropriate. The lower half of this range reduces cycle time but can increase moulded-in stress and reduce weld-line strength in complex geometries. Injection speed and holding pressure should be set to generate cavity pressure in the range of 30–60 MPa rather than relying on machine dial pressure alone. A back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa is normally sufficient for homogenisation without excessive shear heating. Screw rotation speed on a 45 mm screw is commonly 80–120 rpm. Hold pressure should be 60–80% of peak injection pressure, maintained for 3–6 s or until gate freeze occurs. Short shots, sink marks, and warpage should be corrected by adjusting gate location, packing pressure, or mould temperature rather than by increasing melt temperature above 250 °C.
When switching to ABS 15E1 from another polymer, a styrenic or low-viscosity ABS purge compound is recommended. Residual polycarbonate can require higher purging temperatures, but prologed exposure above 250 °C should be avoided. For shut-down periods longer than 10 min, barrel temperatures should be reduced to 180–190 °C to limit thermal degradation.
Comparative differentiation from other ABS grades is primarily rheological and morphological. High-flow ABS with melt volume-flow rate above 25 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg reduces injection pressure and improves thin-wall filling, but may sacrifice notched impact strength and chemical stress-crack resistance. ABS 15E1 occupies the medium-flow band and is therefore more appropriate for thicker sections where impact retention is more important than spiral-flow length. In comparison with heat-resistant ABS grades containing α-methylstyrene, 15E1 has a lower Vicat softening temperature and should not be specified for continuous service above 80–90 °C unless the load is low and exposure is short-term. Against ABS/PC blends, 15E1 has lower low-temperature notched impact and lower heat deflection under load; however, its rheology is less moisture-sensitive and it is generally less prone to viscosity drift from transesterification during prolonged residence. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so direct comparisons should be confirmed with lot-specific testing under the intended processing conditions.
Addition of in-house regrind from sprues and runners is permissible, but the proportion should be controlled. At 10 wt% regrind, melt volume-flow rate measured per ISO 1133-1:2022 often shifts by less than 5%. At 30 wt% regrind, the shift may exceed 10% depending on drying and prior thermal history. The polybutadiene phase is the most sensitive component; repeated extrusion through a twin-screw compounding line with 40:1 L/D can reduce notched Izod impact per ISO 180/1A by 15–25% after three cycles. Colour shift measured as CIELAB ΔE per ASTM D6290 can exceed 2.0 at 20 wt% mixed regrind. Regrind must be dried together with virgin pellets and screened through a 3–5 mm mesh to prevent feeding fluctuations. Accumulation of fine particles in the hopper throat can cause melt pressure variation of more than 2–3 MPa during injection.
For applications requiring fine surface appearance, regrind content above 15 wt% may produce visible flow lines or gloss differences. If matte or textured surfaces are specified, higher regrind proportions may be acceptable after process capability studies. No universal limit applies to all moulds, but the use of reclaimed material should be validated for each part number because gate geometry and wall thickness affect cosmetic sensitivity.
Unlabelled application sections follow. ABS 15E1 is typically considered for injection-moulded electrical appliance housings, vacuum cleaner bodies, automotive interior non-structural trim, and general appliance components where medium impact and consistent flow are required. Each use should be validated against end-use flammability requirements. If a regulated flame rating is required, the lot-specific UL 94 card must be checked. Published data for this specific grade’s UL 94 rating is limited; unfilled ABS commonly achieves HB at 1.5 mm, but V-series ratings require additional flame-retardant formulations and are not implied. For applications exposed to ultraviolet radiation, unpainted ABS 15E1 should not be used outdoors unless stabilised or coated. Yellowing and gloss loss under fluorescent UV exposure according to ISO 4892-3 can occur within 500–1000 h for general-purpose ABS. Chemical contact with ketones, esters, and aromatic solvents should be avoided because environmental stress cracking may reduce tensile strength by more than 50% when tested after chemical immersion according to ASTM D543.
Regulatory status must be confirmed for each shipment. Dongguan Xiongfa Plastic may provide lot-level declarations for RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation 1907/2006. For reprocessed or off-spec ABS, SVHC screening under REACH Article 33 is required before import or use in the European Union. No claim of compliance with FDA 21 CFR for direct food contact is made for this grade; end users must confirm specific approvals from the supplier for the relevant food-contact application and use conditions.
Incompatibility boundaries include melt blending with polyvinyl chloride or chlorinated paraffins, which can release hydrogen chloride during heating and catalyse chain scission of the polybutadiene phase. Contact with acetal homopolymer should be avoided in purge or transport systems because formaldehyde evolution can generate odour and surface defects. If switching from polycarbonate, a purge with a low-viscosity ABS or styrenic purge compound at 230 °C is advised. Alkaline mould releases and amine-based slip additives should be avoided unless specifically recommended; they may cause plate-out on textured cavities and reduce weld-line strength. Storage should be in sealed containers away from direct sunlight and sources of airborne hydrocarbon vapour.
