    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Xinsu Source PC/ABS FR5030WH is a white-pigmented flame-retardant polycarbonate/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene alloy supplied in pellet form for injection molding and extrusion. The grade designation encodes a flame-retardant package intended for UL 94 V-0 compliance and a white color base tailored to light-colored structural enclosures. Supplier technical literature identifies typical uses in power distribution enclosures, consumer electronics chassis, industrial control housings, and electrical accessory components where dimensional stability, impact toughness, and ignition resistance are specified simultaneously. The material is differentiated from general-purpose PC/ABS by its flame-retardant package and from many brominated flame-retardant grades by its white pigmentation and formulation approach. Because the polycarbonate phase is hydrolysis-sensitive, processing requires closed-loop desiccant drying and controlled melt residence time.

What Processing Boundaries Prevent Hydrolytic Degradation and FR Package Plate-Out?

Pre-drying in a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point at or below -30°C is required before injection molding. Typical drying parameters are 80°C to 90°C for 4 h to 6 h, and residual moisture should be kept below 0.02 wt% by Karl Fischer titration. At higher moisture levels, the polycarbonate phase undergoes chain scission during plastication, producing silver streaking, reduced melt viscosity, and lower notched impact strength in molded parts.

Processors running the grade on injection molding machines with 20:1 to 24:1 L/D general purpose screws and clamp force from 120 t to 350 t typically use a barrel temperature profile from 230°C to 255°C from rear to nozzle. Melt temperature should not exceed 270°C. Mold temperature is maintained at 60°C to 90°C to control surface appearance, reduce internal stress, and improve flow length. Residence time should remain below 8 min, and regrind addition is typically limited to 25 wt% unless process validation demonstrates retention of flame rating and color. At longer residence times, the flame-retardant package can release acidic species that corrode hot runner tips, gate inserts, and mold surfaces. Plate-out may appear as white or tan deposits on polished tooling, particularly near the nozzle side of runner blocks and on valve gate stems.

Production-scale experience on 200 t to 300 t machines has shown that hot-runner hold-up pockets and poorly purged valve gates contribute to visible black specks and off-white streaks after color change or start-up. Generous cold slug wells, balanced runner geometries, and valve-gate sequencing reduce stagnation. Vent depths should remain below 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm to allow volatile removal without flash. Tools with textured cavitation can be run at slightly lower mold temperature, but polished parts require the upper mold-temperature range to minimize blush around gates and flow marks.

Thermal stability screening by differential scanning calorimetry and thermogravimetric analysis provides a narrow processing window. For halogen-free white flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds in this class, 1% mass loss in nitrogen is commonly observed near 330°C to 350°C, and rapid decomposition begins above 400°C. The operational relevance is not only decomposition but also the acid-catalyzed degradation of the polycarbonate phase at temperatures above 270°C. Melt temperature excursions in barrel hot spots, compression zones, or check rings can therefore lead to local molecular weight loss that is not captured by average melt-temperature readings. Mold-filling simulation for FR5030WH should use capillary rheometry data measured at 260°C, 270°C, and 280°C across shear rates of 10² s⁻¹ to 10⁴ s⁻¹. Compared with unfilled PC/ABS, the flame-retardant and white colorant package typically increases shear-thinning, so the power-law index is lower and the consistency index higher. This rheological response can help maintain fill pressure in thin-wall sections but also raises pressure drop across small gates and runner restrictions.

Table 1 lists representative property ranges for FR5030WH according to standard test protocols. These values are drawn from the product class and supplier datasheets; they are not a substitute for a certificate of analysis for a specific lot. Published data for this specific configuration is limited outside the supplier technical data sheet.

Flame-Retardant Performance and the UL 94 Rating Architecture

The primary flame-retardant specification for FR5030WH is the UL 94 vertical burn test. Supplier documentation positions the grade at V-0 at 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm thickness, with a total afterflame time for five specimens below 50 s, no individual afterflame time greater than 10 s, and no afterglow exceeding 30 s. The white pigmentation does not eliminate thickness-based verification. Thin sections, weld lines, and end-of-fill locations can reduce effective flame-retardant concentration or alter char structure; molded burn specimens must be taken from production tools, not edge-gated plaques alone.

Compared with general-purpose PC/ABS rated UL 94 HB, FR5030WH is formulated to self-extinguish vertically rather than sustain horizontal burn. The rating architecture is not continuous: a V-0 classification at 1.5 mm does not automatically confer V-0 at 0.75 mm or 0.5 mm. Molders of thin-wall consumer electronics should therefore verify the rating at the minimum production wall. The grade is not automatically 5VA or 5VB; those classifications require larger plaque specimens and absence of burn-through, and published data for this specific configuration is limited.

Electrical safety evaluation often combines UL 94 with glow-wire and tracking tests. For white flame-retardant PC/ABS grades, comparative tracking index values measured according to IEC 60112:2020 are commonly in the 175 V to 250 V range. Glow-wire performance under IEC 60695-2-11:2021 depends strongly on final part thickness, boss geometry, and glass-fiber reinforcement; supplier data for FR5030WH should be requested for the final molded part rather than inferred from a raw-material rating.

When the Part Wall Thickness Drops Below 1.0 mm, How Should Processing Parameters Be Adjusted?

In thin-wall electrical housings below 1.0 mm, the interaction between flame-retardant stability and melt filling becomes the primary process constraint. The flow length of FR5030WH is lower than unfilled PC/ABS because the flame-retardant package and white colorant increase melt viscosity at low shear rates. At 260°C, spiral flow length at 2 mm wall thickness is typically 10% to 20% lower than a non-flame-retardant PC/ABS with equivalent melt volume-flow rate. Thin-wall molding therefore uses the upper melt temperature limit while keeping the melt below 270°C. Injection velocity should be high enough to prevent premature flow-front solidification, and packing pressure is commonly set at 40% to 70% of peak injection pressure. Mold temperature at 80°C to 90°C improves knit-line strength and surface finish but extends cycle time.

Shear heating in small gates can degrade the flame-retardant package and shift the color from white to off-white or yellow. Gate shear rates should be kept below 50,000 s⁻¹ by enlarging gate thickness, increasing the number of gates, or using sequential valve gating. At wall thickness below 0.8 mm, V-0 performance may require re-evaluation because the reduced char formation volume and high surface-to-volume ratio change extinguishment behavior. Parts in this thickness range often require end-product-specific UL 94 testing and may need a more flowable flame-retardant PC/ABS grade if fill pressure exceeds machine capability.

For hot runner systems, externally heated manifolds with internal flow channels sized for shear rates below 30,000 s⁻¹ reduce residence time. Valve gate diameters below 1.5 mm are not recommended for white flame-retardant PC/ABS because the temperature rise across the gate can exceed 20°C at high fill speeds, contributing to local color shift and gate-vestige brittleness.

Compared with general-purpose PC/ABS, FR5030WH provides flame retardancy but generally exhibits lower notched Izod impact and lower flowability at equivalent melt temperature. The white colorant package provides hiding power and light-colored surface quality; however, white grades reveal thermal yellowing earlier than black or dark grades because oxidation products are not masked by pigments. Supplier guidance indicates that FR5030WH is formulated to reduce mold plate-out relative to brominated flame-retardant PC/ABS grades, but plate-out comparisons are process-dependent and are often documented qualitatively rather than through a standardized test.

Brominated flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds often achieve V-0 at lower additive loading and can be easier to color, but combustion generates corrosive gases and higher smoke density, and some formulations have lower comparative tracking index. The FR5030WH formulation is positioned for electrical and electronic housings where RoHS restrictions on polybrominated biphenyls and polybrominated diphenyl ethers and the need for white or light-colored parts favor halogen-free or low-halogen approaches. However, halogen-free flame-retardant packages are generally more thermally sensitive and require tighter melt-temperature control than brominated alternatives; supplier data must confirm the halogen content of FR5030WH. Mineral-filled flame-retardant PC/ABS grades offer higher flexural modulus and lower coefficient of linear thermal expansion, but their notched impact strength is lower and surface appearance is less ductile. Glass-fiber-reinforced flame-retardant PC/ABS grades improve load-bearing performance but can reduce surface quality and increase anisotropic warpage.

Design constraints for white flame-retardant PC/ABS enclosures include stress concentration at bosses, snap-fit arms, and self-tapping screw engagement. Sharp internal radii below 0.5 mm should be avoided because the flame-retardant package increases notch sensitivity relative to unfilled PC/ABS. Thread-forming screws in bosses require pilot holes sized to reduce hoop stress; typical pilot-hole diameters are 0.80–0.90 times the screw outer diameter depending on boss wall thickness and thread engagement length. Chemical compatibility should be evaluated according to ASTM D543 or ISO 22088-2:2006 when contact with cleaning agents, esters, ketones, aromatic hydrocarbons, or plasticizers is expected. Continuous exposure to strong alkaline solutions can produce environmental stress cracking in polycarbonate-rich surfaces. The material is not intended for food contact or medical applications unless specific FDA 21 CFR or USP compliance is confirmed by the supplier for the finished device stream.

Compliance Documentation Is Not a Substitute for Molded-Part Ignition Testing

Regulatory documentation for FR5030WH should be obtained from the supplier for each production lot. Table 2 summarizes the compliance documentation framework applicable to this grade. It is a checklist of standard designations and supplier documentation status, not an end-product certification.

On the production floor, FR5030WH pellets should be stored in sealed containers at ambient temperature and below 60% RH. Opened bags should be returned to dry storage or consumed within one shift when conditioned air is not used. Regrind from well-dried scrap can be incorporated up to 25 wt% if free of dust, oil, and foreign resin contamination. Avoid combining with acetal, polyvinyl chloride, or thermally unstable resins in material handling because trace contamination can degrade the polycarbonate phase and alter UL 94 performance. Amine-based mold release agents and silicone oils should be excluded from the processing area because they can interfere with the flame-retardant package and produce surface defects. Metal inserts should be preheated to reduce local quenching and stress cracking around insert bosses.

Batch-to-batch variation is monitored through melt volume-flow rate and ash content. A shift in MVR of more than ±15% from the qualification lot may indicate moisture exposure, regrind inclusion, or formulation drift. If production burn-test specimens fail after process changes, check drying conditions, melt temperature, residence time, weld-line placement, and gate shear heating before changing the material specification. The material's operational boundary is determined by the final molded part; no raw-material data sheet replaces ignition-resistance testing on production tools.
