Dongguan Weiye Plastic ABS WY014 is supplied by Dongguan Weiye Plastic Materials Co., Ltd. as a supplier-coded acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding product. The model code WY014 is an internal commercial designation; it is not an ISO 2580 data block and does not by itself disclose the rubber-phase content, flow grade, heat resistance, or recycled content. Published data for this specific configuration is limited. The property bands and processing limits shown in this document are therefore selected from publicly documented ranges for unfilled medium-flow, medium-impact ABS grades and must be verified against the lot-specific certificate of analysis before tool design or process validation.
The material is specified for rigid injection-moulded components that require dimensional stability, moderate tensile strength, and room-temperature impact resistance. Typical application areas include equipment enclosure fronts, appliance bezels, electrical connector housings, office machine covers, and internal structural brackets. The product is normally supplied as pellets in 25 kg bags or bulk packaging. Unless a separate flame-retardant certification is attached to the shipment, the grade should not be treated as inherently flame retardant, and no UL 94 V classification should be assumed without test data under IEC 60695-11-10:2013.
In terms of composition, ABS consists of a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer phase with a dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase. The ratio of rubber to styrene-acrylonitrile controls the trade-off between melt flow and notched impact. WY014 is considered medium-impact and medium-flow within the ABS family, but the exact rubber content is proprietary to the supplier and may vary between production lots if recycled feedstock is used.
Drying is mandatory. At 50% RH, unfilled ABS equilibrates to approximately 0.2–0.4% moisture by weight. For injection molding, moisture must be reduced to ≤0.05% by weight when tested to ISO 15512:2019. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of ≤−30°C is recommended. Set drying temperature at 80–90°C for 2–4 h. At relative humidity above 60%, dry residence time should be extended to 4–6 h, and transfer lines should be sealed to prevent moisture regain. A single-stage hot-air hopper dryer is not sufficient under those conditions. Undried material commonly produces silver streaks, splay, gas burns, and reduced notched impact due to the combined effect of water and residual heat history in the melt.
The melt temperature at the nozzle should be maintained between 220°C and 250°C. The useful processing window is approximately 20°C wide, which is narrower than polypropylene; this makes active nozzle thermocouples and calibrated barrel zones necessary. The polybutadiene rubber phase degrades rapidly above 250°C, producing yellowing, acrid odor, and a sharp drop in Izod impact. Residence time above 240°C should not exceed 5 min. When short stops exceed 10 min, the barrel should be purged with general-purpose polystyrene or high-impact polystyrene at 220°C to displace heat-sensitive ABS from the screw and hot runner.
Mold temperature should be controlled from 40°C to 80°C. Lower mold temperatures improve cycle time but reduce surface gloss and may cause jetting in thin sections. Higher mold temperatures reduce molded-in stress and improve weld-line strength, but can increase shrinkage variation. Injection molding machines should use a general-purpose screw with an L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1–2.5:1. Back pressure should be set at 0.3–0.7 MPa to homogenize the melt without over-shearing the rubber phase. Cavity pressures for thin-wall parts are generally in the range of 30–60 MPa, so clamp force must be calculated from the projected area at the upper end of that range.
Because the supplier-specific WY014 designation does not carry a published ISO data block, batch release verification should compare incoming lots against the property envelope in Table 1. The values are not lot-specific guarantees; they are reference ranges for unfilled ABS injection-moulding feedstocks with medium flow and medium impact. For critical dimensions, the mold shrinkage range should be re-qualified if the lot melt flow rate shifts by more than 3 g/10 min.

At the lower end of the tensile yield band, the material behaves as a general-purpose ABS with easier flow and lower rigidity. At the upper end, it behaves more like a stiff ABS for load-bearing internal parts. If low-temperature impact is required, request notched Izod testing at 0°C or −30°C; room-temperature data do not capture the ductile-to-brittle transition of the rubber phase. ABS grades with low butadiene content can lose most of their impact strength below −10°C.
RoHS compliance requires documentation under Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, with maximum concentration values of 0.1% by weight in homogeneous material for lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB and PBDE, and 0.01% for cadmium. REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 requires declaration of SVHC above 0.1% by weight in the article. These documents must be obtained from the supplier; they are not inferred from the WY014 code.
Compared with high-impact polystyrene, unfilled ABS of the WY014 reference class provides higher tensile yield strength, higher modulus, and higher heat deflection temperature. HIPS typically exhibits tensile yield in the range of 25–35 MPa and heat deflection at 1.8 MPa of about 70–85°C; the ABS reference band for WY014 is 40–48 MPa tensile yield and 85–100°C HDT. This makes ABS suitable for enclosures that must retain dimensions during warm transport or near internal heat sources. However, ABS is more notch-sensitive than HIPS in thick sections and is more susceptible to stress cracking in contact with ketones, esters, aromatic solvents, and chlorinated hydrocarbons.
Compared with PC/ABS, unfilled ABS WY014 has lower heat resistance and lower multiaxial toughness. PC/ABS grades can exceed 100°C HDT at 1.8 MPa and can reach notched Izod values above 40 kJ/m² depending on polycarbonate content. WY014-class ABS should not be dropped into a PC/ABS tool without re-evaluating load-bearing temperature, chemical contact, and impact at sub-0°C temperatures. The benefit is easier flow and lower melt temperature, which can reduce cycle time and energy in molds with long flow lengths.
Compared with high-flow general-purpose ABS, WY014-class medium-impact material retains more notched impact strength. High-flow ABS grades can report melt flow rates above 25 g/10 min, but their Izod impact may drop below 15 kJ/m². If a converter is considering a high-flow ABS because of thin-wall filling, the trade-off must be made explicit by test data rather than inferred from the grade code.
If WY014 is supplied as a recycled or compounded grade, the batch-to-batch variation in rubber content may produce a wider MFR band than virgin ABS. A shift of 2–5 g/10 min between lots is not unusual in post-industrial feedstock and can alter fill time, packing pressure, and mold shrinkage.
For incoming inspection, a documented sampling plan such as ISO 2859-1 is recommended. At least three random bags from a shipment are to be taken for melt flow rate, moisture, ash, and color. The melt flow rate should be determined according to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C/10 kg. The result should fall within the range agreed on the purchase specification; variation of more than 3 g/10 min from the tool qualification lot should trigger a process re-qualification. Moisture after drying must be checked by ISO 15512:2019; values above 0.05% require additional drying before molding. Ash by ISO 3451-1:2019 at 700°C is a useful marker for filler or recycled content. For unpigmented virgin ABS, ash above 2% indicates mineral loading or contamination and should be investigated.
Color consistency is checked on injection-moulded plaques with a spectrophotometer. A CIELAB ΔE above 1.5 may be visible on appliance surfaces and should be dispositioned before production. If the product is used in electrical enclosures, the lot documentation should include RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II compliance and REACH SVHC declarations. For food-contact applications, the supplier must confirm FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 status for the exact lot; generic ABS cannot be assumed food-contact-compliant.
In continuous service, unfilled ABS of the WY014 reference class is generally limited to air temperatures below 80°C under low load. Short-term excursions to the heat deflection temperature range of 85–100°C can cause dimensional relaxation, especially under load. The product is not inherently weather resistant; outdoor exposure without carbon black or UV stabilizer leads to surface chalking and gloss loss within months. Flammability is not improved unless the grade is specifically modified and tested at the required thickness. Chemical contact with methyl ethyl ketone, methylene chloride, toluene, xylene, esters, or strong oxidizing acids should be avoided because these agents can induce environmental stress cracking. For electrical and electronic applications, molders should verify that flame-retardant, glow-wire, and comparative tracking index requirements are supported by lot-specific test reports rather than the WY014 code alone.
