    More Introduction

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin supplied as Dongguan Weiye Plastic ABS WY012 is intended for injection molding and extrusion applications requiring moderate toughness, surface hardness, and dimensional stability within the general-purpose ABS class. The composition combines acrylonitrile for chemical resistance and thermal capability, butadiene for low-temperature impact, and styrene for melt processability and gloss potential. Specification parameters for this product are normally reported as density, melt mass-flow rate, tensile yield stress, notched impact strength, Vicat softening temperature, and deflection temperature under load. In the absence of a directly accessible WY012 certificate of analysis, the appropriate comparison range for unfilled general-purpose ABS is a density of 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019 and a tensile yield stress of 35–50 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012. Those values establish the family into which WY012 is normally classified but do not replace lot-specific documentation.

How Does WY012 Compare With Heat-Resistant, Flame-Retardant, and Transparent ABS Families?

At the formulation level, differentiation between WY012 and other ABS products begins with comonomer ratio and additive loading rather than a single molecular-weight variable. Heat-resistant ABS grades based on higher acrylonitrile content or alpha-methylstyrene comonomer typically show a Vicat softening temperature 10–25 K above standard general-purpose ABS when evaluated per ISO 306:2022, method B50. Flame-retardant ABS compounds containing brominated or phosphorus-based synergists are specified under IEC 60695-11-10 or UL 94; those formulations often sacrifice melt flow and ultraviolet retention compared with unfilled WY012. Transparent or translucent ABS belongs to the methyl methacrylate–modified terpolymer family, with light transmittance above 80% at 3.0 mm per ASTM D1003-21, a property not associated with opaque WY012. WY012 is therefore more accurately classified as an opaque, general-purpose injection grade with moderate thermal resistance, not a specialized heat, combustion, or optical product.

Against polycarbonate/ABS blends, WY012 has a lower heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa; PC/ABS often falls between 95°C and 115°C, while general-purpose ABS remains in the 80–100°C band. WY012 also has lower melt viscosity at typical injection shear rates, which allows lower packing pressure but may reduce edge definition on very thin deep-draw parts. Compared with polypropylene, WY012 exhibits higher tensile modulus, lower moisture absorption, and higher paint adhesion without flame or corona treatment; however, polypropylene remains more resistant to hydrolysis and may retain ductility at sub-zero temperatures below −20°C. These distinctions are process-relevant because tools designed for polyolefin shrinkage of 1.0–2.0% cannot be transferred to WY012 without adjusting cavity dimensions for ABS shrinkage near 0.4–0.7% per ISO 294-4:2018.

On injection molding lines with clamp force between 800 kN and 3,000 kN, WY012 requires desiccant drying to residual moisture below 0.1%. Typical drying conditions are 80°C for 2–4 h, with return air dew point below −20°C. Insufficient drying on production-scale machinery appears as silver streaks near the gate and as reduced weld-line impact. Barrel temperature set points are normally 210–240°C from rear to nozzle, but the exact profile depends on shot size, screw recovery time, and injection velocity. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should remain below 250°C; residence time above 8 min at the upper limit can initiate discoloration and styrene depolymerization odor. Mold temperature is normally held at 40–80°C; higher mold temperatures improve gloss and reduce molded-in stress but lengthen cooling time. General-purpose screws with L/D between 20:1 and 24:1 and compression ratios near 2.2:1 are acceptable; high-shear barrier screws may generate excessive frictional heat and should be evaluated with nozzle melt temperature measurements.

Melt rheology and butadiene-phase distribution set the practical toughness ceiling

Rheological data for WY012 are best expressed by melt mass-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022; unfilled injection grades of this family usually fall between 5 g/10 min and 25 g/10 min at 220°C and 10 kg. Notched Izod impact under ISO 180:2020 for general-purpose ABS typically lies in the range 15–35 kJ/m² at 23°C, with low-temperature performance at −30°C reduced to roughly 60–70% of ambient value depending on butadiene particle size and crosslink density. Published data for this specific product configuration is limited, so process validation should rely on the supplier’s certificate of analysis rather than on generic literature values. On injection machines, low weld-line impact in WY012 may be addressed by increasing melt temperature within the allowable range, raising mold temperature, optimizing gate geometry, or reducing moisture; changing resin lot should be considered only after those machine-side variables are recorded. Capillary rheometry at apparent shear rates from 100 s-1 to 5,000 s-1 is recommended when mold flow simulation is required because melt mass-flow rate alone does not provide the necessary viscosity curve for runner balancing. Cross-WLF viscosity coefficients for WY012 must be derived from capillary rheometry because generic ABS coefficients in simulation databases may not reproduce the lot-specific melt behavior.

When WY012 substitutes into high-gloss housings or structural brackets, tool design shifts accordingly

Application of WY012 in consumer electronic housings, appliance panels, automotive interior trim, and structural brackets is driven by the need for moderate impact resistance, dimensional repeatability, and plating or paint adhesion. Parts with wall thickness between 1.2 mm and 3.5 mm are common; rib thickness should remain below 60% of the adjacent wall to avoid sink marks, and internal corner radii below 0.5 mm raise stress concentration at the notch. High-gloss housings require mold steel polished to at least SPI-SPE A3 finish and mold temperatures at 65–80°C to replicate the cavity surface. In decoration operations, ABS WY012 exhibits higher adhesive bond strength to solvent-borne coatings and electroplated metal layers than polyolefins, eliminating the need for corona or flame treatment; however, exposure to ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, or aromatic hydrocarbons causes environmental stress cracking. The product should not be selected for continuous outdoor service without ultraviolet stabilizers or for direct contact with concentrated oxidizing acids. Structural brackets molded in WY012 should be validated for creep and fatigue because short-term tensile data do not predict long-term load-bearing behavior. Ultrasonic welding of WY012 to ABS or polycarbonate is typically performed at 20 kHz with amplitude of 30–50 µm; shear joints are preferred over energy directors for structural parts.

Representative general-purpose ABS property control windows

Because the manufacturer may not publish a complete WY012 data sheet in open channels, the following table gives standard control windows for unfilled general-purpose ABS. The lot certificate of analysis is the binding specification for any shipment.

In extrusion and sheet applications, WY012 must be compared with high-molecular-weight ABS grades rather than general-purpose injection grades. Extrusion grades typically have lower melt mass-flow rate and higher melt strength to support thermoforming sag resistance; a WY012 grade selected for sheet will require a lower apparent shear rate and may display greater die swell than a high-molecular-weight product. Sheet extrusion lines with barrier screws and L/D of 30:1 or 36:1 operate with barrel settings near 220–240°C, and die temperatures should be held in the same range to prevent edge tearing. Calendered rolls at 80–100°C are used to set surface gloss and sheet flatness. For thermoforming, sheet temperature is normally increased to 150–180°C; lower temperatures produce excessive draw stress and local thinning, while higher temperatures produce surface blisters.

Documentation for WY012 typically includes compliance statements for the RoHS recast Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006, but those statements are lot- and supplier-specific and must be obtained from Dongguan Weiye Plastic or the converting compounder. For food-contact applications, unfilled ABS may be evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020; WY012 should not be assumed suitable for food contact without written confirmation because additives and carriers can alter compliance. In clean production environments, regrind usage up to 20 wt% is common for general-purpose ABS provided that the regrind is dry, free of dust, and not degraded by multiple heat histories; higher regrind ratios may reduce notched impact and shift melt mass-flow rate upward. The main operational boundary for WY012 is the combination of thermal stability and solvent stress-cracking resistance; when service requirements include sustained heat above 90°C under load or repeated exposure to aggressive cleaning solvents, a heat-resistant ABS or polycarbonate/ABS blend is usually substituted.

On long-running production campaigns, batch-to-batch variance encountered with WY012 generally appears as a drift in melt mass-flow rate of ±1.5 g/10 min and a corresponding change in injection pressure during the first hour of a lot. Processors should request the supplier’s melt flow data and compare it with in-house capillary rheometry at two shear rates; if the new lot exceeds the control window, screw rotation speed and barrel temperature can be adjusted only within the allowable thermal profile. Color differences in natural or custom-compounded WY012 are measured as ΔE under ISO 11664-4:2008; batch acceptance limits are typically set by the downstream customer and are not a physical property of the base resin. Because the product is a general-purpose formulation, the most practical difference from other grades is observed not in a single specification line but in the simultaneous relationship between flow, impact, and heat resistance.
