    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Wangpi PC/ABS FR1200 NC/BK is an unfilled flame-retardant polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene blend supplied in natural and black pellet form. The grade is specified for injection-moulded electrical and electronic enclosures where thin-wall flame retardance, moderate impact strength, and dimensional accuracy are required. The product code FR1200 identifies the flame-retardant series; NC denotes unpigmented natural pellets, while BK denotes carbon black pigmented pellets. The compound is based on a two-phase polymer matrix: the polycarbonate phase provides heat resistance, impact strength, and stiffness, while the ABS phase reduces melt viscosity and improves chemical resistance. The flame-retardant package promotes char formation and short afterflame times in the UL 94 V-0 vertical burn test. Because the formulation is unfilled, density and notched impact behaviour remain lower and higher respectively than mineral-filled flame-retardant grades. The data below represent the product class and supplier technical-literature values; batch certificates of analysis govern specific lots.

Material Constitution and the NC/BK Colour Designation

Polycarbonate is present as the continuous amorphous phase, while ABS contributes styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer and grafted butadiene rubber domains. In unfilled flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds of this class, polycarbonate content typically lies between 60% and 80% by mass. The FR additive package may be halogenated or halogen-free depending on the supplier formulation and export destination; the exact system should be confirmed against the safety data sheet. NC material is unpigmented and can be used with compatible color masterbatches for self-colouring. BK material contains carbon black, generally at 0.5 wt% to 2 wt%, which changes weld-line appearance, surface resistivity, and laser-marking contrast without producing a conductive compound. The natural grade may appear translucent in thin sections under 1.5 mm but becomes increasingly opaque as wall thickness increases. The black grade is opaque at all normal wall sections.

Because the material is unfilled, mechanical properties are governed by rubber-phase morphology, polycarbonate molecular weight, and flame-retardant dispersion rather than by filler aspect ratio. The absence of mineral reinforcement lowers specific gravity and improves notched impact, but it also raises mould shrinkage and reduces flexural modulus compared with mineral-filled halogen-free PC/ABS grades. Thermal analysis of similar unfilled FR PC/ABS typically shows two glass transition regions: the PC-rich phase near 140–150 °C and the SAN phase near 100–110 °C. Major decomposition onset in nitrogen is commonly observed in the range 380–420 °C, but published data for the FR1200 NC/BK specific formulation is limited at this level of detail.

What Limits Processing Latitude in Flame-Retardant PC/ABS Grades?

The primary processing constraint is moisture-induced hydrolysis. Melt-state hydrolysis of polycarbonate accelerates when residual moisture exceeds approximately 0.02%. The pellets must be dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30 °C or lower, at 80 °C for 3–5 h for natural material and 4–6 h for black material. Carbon black can retain surface moisture, so black lots may need the longer drying time. If storage relative humidity exceeds 60%, the material should be considered wet and re-dried before processing. Open hoppers should not remain at line ambient for more than 2 h without dry air. Drying temperature above 90 °C should be avoided because pellet sintering and additive phase separation can occur. Residual moisture should be verified by a calibrated Karl Fischer analyser or a loss-on-drying instrument at 120 °C; target residual moisture is below 0.02%.

Melt temperature measured by airshot should be held between 240 °C and 270 °C. A representative barrel profile for a shut-off nozzle is rear 230–240 °C, mid 245–255 °C, front 255–265 °C, nozzle 250–260 °C. Mould temperature should be 60–90 °C. Higher mould temperature improves weld-line strength and surface finish but extends cycle time. Residence time at melt temperature should not exceed 10 min; stalled production should be purged or the barrel temperature lowered. Extended residence produces yellowing, flame-retardant migration, and acidic volatiles that can corrode tool surfaces. Back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa is normally sufficient; high back pressure raises melt temperature and increases residence time. Screw decompression after plasticising should be 3–6 mm; excessive decompression draws air into the melt and can create burn marks. Parting-line venting should be 0.02–0.03 mm deep. For thin-wall sections below 1.5 mm, injection speed should be increased to prevent freeze-off; hold pressure is generally 40–60% of injection pressure. Clamp force can be estimated from projected area and cavity pressure. For a projected area of 250 cm² and an assumed cavity pressure of 80 MPa, the required clamp force is 2000 kN.

The melt exhibits shear-thinning behaviour. At 260 °C, apparent viscosity for unfilled FR PC/ABS of this class may fall from roughly 200 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to 40 Pa·s at 1000 s⁻¹, depending on rubber content and flame-retardant plasticisation. Gates should be sized to generate shear heat for thin-wall filling while keeping shear rate below visible degradation limits. Hot-runner systems, if used, should have balanced thermal profiles and no dead spots; hot-runner tip temperatures should not exceed 280 °C. Purging with acetal or PVC is not permitted because these materials degrade to release formaldehyde or hydrogen chloride, which contaminate the melt and corrode steel. Amine-based purging compounds or lubricants should be avoided because amines attack polycarbonate and can produce viscosity loss or stress-cracking.

Vacuum-vented compounding is used by the compounder to remove volatiles from the flame-retardant package and residual monomers, but the moulder does not require a vented barrel. If regrind is used, it should be dry, dust-free, and limited to 20% by weight. Any regrind addition requires re-verification of UL 94 performance at the production wall thickness, because flame-retardant distribution and polymer molecular weight can be affected by repeated melt history.

Flame-retardant performance is thickness-dependent. A UL 94 V-0 listing at 1.5 mm does not automatically extend to 0.75 mm or 0.5 mm. Processors evaluating thinner walls should obtain supplementary UL data from the supplier. Glow wire tests under IEC 60695-2-12 should be conducted on the actual part thickness, not on a generic plaque, because char formation is influenced by geometry and thermal mass. Published data for the FR1200 NC/BK specific configuration is limited for colour-dependent dielectric properties; the black variant should be evaluated under IEC 60112:2020 before finalising creepage distances and live-part clearances.

Comparative Property Profile and Test Methods

Property values are meaningful only with the standard and conditioning state. The following representative values are drawn from technical literature for unfilled flame-retardant PC/ABS compounds in this class. They are not lot-specific guarantees; the batch certificate of analysis governs acceptance.

Compared with general-purpose unfilled PC/ABS, the flame-retardant package in the FR1200 series typically reduces notched Izod impact by 10–20% and reduces melt mass-flow rate by 5–10% at the same condition. Compared with mineral-filled flame-retardant PC/ABS, the unfilled FR1200 grade has lower density, lower flexural modulus, higher notched impact, and higher mould shrinkage. Compared with flame-retardant ABS-only compounds, FR1200 provides higher heat deflection temperature, better low-temperature impact, and better hydrolytic resistance, but it requires higher melt temperature and stricter drying. Compared with polycarbonate-only flame-retardant grades, FR1200 offers lower melt viscosity and better thin-wall flow, but lower HDT and lower resistance to long-term UV exposure unless a UV-stabilised variant is selected. The difference in melt viscosity also affects mould-filling pressure: at the same wall section, FR1200 is likely to fill at lower injection pressure than a polycarbonate-only FR grade, but it is more notch-sensitive than unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS.

When Natural or Black Variants Influence Drying and Part Appearance

Natural NC pellets are preferred for self-colouring because the absence of carbon black permits higher chromaticity in dark and bright formulations within the resin’s base opacity. Black BK pellets contain carbon black and provide consistent dark colour without post-moulding painting, but they may heat unevenly in deep drying beds because of radiative absorption. Dryer bed depth and air circulation should be adjusted to avoid local overheating. Black parts conceal yellowing caused by mild thermal degradation, but this cosmetic masking does not restore lost impact or flame-retardant performance. The black variant may show different laser-marking contrast and different surface resistivity; if the application requires defined comparative tracking index or surface resistivity, the final black compound should be tested under IEC 60112:2020 or ASTM D257 as appropriate. Weld lines in black mouldings are visible as dark flow-front lines, while natural mouldings may show opacity variation at weld lines. Both variants can be coloured with PC/ABS-compatible masterbatches, but only carriers with thermal stability above 270 °C should be used. Solvent-based painting and pad printing on flame-retardant PC/ABS may require adhesion promotion because low-molecular-weight flame-retardant additives can migrate to the surface and reduce paint adhesion. The natural grade is not a substitute for a transparent PC/ABS: it is translucent at best and becomes opaque thicker than roughly 1.5–2.0 mm.

Typical uses include low-voltage electrical enclosures, power strips, charger housings, network equipment covers, and consumer appliance parts. For live parts, creepage distance, comparative tracking index, and glow wire results must be evaluated on the production part, not on generic plaques. Continuous service temperature should remain below 80 °C unless heat-ageing data for the specific grade and failure mode are available. Outdoor exposure requires UV-stabilised versions; the base grade may yellow and lose impact strength under extended UV radiation. The material is not intended for food-contact applications unless a specific regulatory certificate under FDA 21 CFR or Regulation (EU) No 10/2011 is supplied. For RoHS compliance, test reports against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and the latest REACH SVHC candidate list should be requested for the shipped batch. Injection-moulded parts should not be exposed to strong alkaline cleaning agents at elevated temperature, because polycarbonate stress-cracking can occur. If the grade is used in electrical equipment subject to glow wire ignition requirements, the finished part must be tested to IEC 60695-2-11 at the final wall thickness, because the supplier cannot guarantee pass/fail behaviour from pellet properties alone.
