Trade designation Dongguan Shengtai PC/ABS FR5001TE identifies an unfilled, flame-retardant blend of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene supplied for injection-moulded structural and enclosure components. The grade belongs to a segment in which the compounder balances the PC phase for heat resistance and impact strength, the ABS phase for processability and chemical resistance, and the flame-retardant package for ignition resistance. The exact lot-specific datasheet for FR5001TE is not independently published in the present source set; therefore, numerical values in this document are presented as engineering ranges for unfilled flame-retardant PC/ABS materials tested under the cited standards. These ranges support initial tool design, material selection, and process development, but they do not replace the manufacturer’s certified certificate of analysis for the specific trade designation.
Material selection for FR5001TE usually occurs after a preliminary enclosure design has defined wall thickness, rib count, gate location, and flammability requirement. Because the grade is unfilled, shrinkage is anisotropic but not dominated by fibre orientation; warpage is driven mainly by differential cooling, packing pressure, and part geometry. Dimensional stability can be predicted with moulding simulation if the software database contains a comparable unfilled FR PC/ABS with matching melt flow rate, pvT data, and heat capacity. If the exact FR5001TE dataset is unavailable, simulation results should be used only for gate balancing and not for final dimensional tolerances.
Typical use of this material class is in indoor electrical enclosures, power-distribution housings, industrial control boxes, and battery-management system brackets. The grade is not generally specified for load-bearing exterior applications because polybutadiene in the ABS phase can degrade under UV exposure and moisture/heat cycling. If an exterior component is required, a UV-stabilised or painted version must be qualified using actual part geometry and weathering data.
Flame-retardant PC/ABS used in electrical enclosures is usually assessed by UL 94 vertical burning, IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire flammability, and IEC 60112 comparative tracking index. Specimen dimensions for UL 94 vertical burning are typically 125 mm × 13 mm at the declared thickness. Five specimens are subjected to two flame applications. The V-0 criteria are afterflame time after the first flame application ≤ 10 s, total afterflame time for five specimens ≤ 50 s, afterflame plus afterglow after the second flame application ≤ 30 s, no afterglow to the holding clamp, and no flaming drips that ignite cotton. A V-0 classification at 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm is commonly required for indoor electrical enclosures, but the classification is thickness-dependent. A V-0 result at 2.0 mm cannot be extrapolated to a 0.8 mm wall without a separate listing. For FR5001TE, the rated thickness must be read from the supplier’s yellow card or batch certificate.
For unattended appliances, glow-wire testing according to IEC 60695-2-11 may be more relevant than UL 94 alone. Glow-wire flammability index values at 850 °C or 960 °C are often required for insulating materials supporting current-carrying parts. FR5001TE must be evaluated at the final part thickness; a UL 94 V-0 classification does not automatically establish glow-wire performance. Comparative tracking index by IEC 60112 may also be specified for live parts. Unfilled FR PC/ABS often achieves a CTI of 250 V to 300 V, but the value depends on the flame-retardant package and colour. This is relevant for electrical spacing design and should be confirmed for the production colour of FR5001TE.
The flame-retardant chemistry changes several process-visible behaviours. Some flame-retardant PC/ABS grades use brominated additives with antimony trioxide; others use halogen-free phosphorus-based packages. Brominated systems may have different melt stability and corrosive gas generation behaviour, while phosphorus-based systems may require higher loading, changing flow and mechanical response. FR5001TE is positioned as a flame-retardant PC/ABS; the exact flame-retardant chemistry should be confirmed from the supplier if a halogen-free declaration is required. The difference is process-visible: phosphorus-based grades may show more mould deposit but better environmental documentation than brominated systems.
Density of unfilled FR PC/ABS is generally 1.18 g/cm³ to 1.22 g/cm³ when measured by ISO 1183-1 or ASTM D792. The exact value depends on phosphorus content and the PC-to-ABS ratio. This density is slightly higher than that of standard unfilled PC/ABS and substantially lower than that of mineral-filled flame-retardant grades. Mould shrinkage tends to range from 0.4 % to 0.7 % in flow direction and 0.5 % to 0.8 % transverse to flow, as measured by ISO 294-4. Shrinkage must be verified on a plaque mould because part geometry and gate type alter it.
Processing starts with moisture control because polycarbonate hydrolyzes when pellet water content exceeds 0.02 wt% at melt temperature. The material should be dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point of -30 °C to -40 °C, a drying hopper temperature of 80 °C to 100 °C, and a residence time of 3 h to 4 h. For central drying systems, the conveying air should also be dried to prevent moisture regain between the dryer and the machine throat. At 23 °C and 50 % RH, PC-based pellets can reach moisture levels above the moulding limit, so a hopper dryer must remain on the machine throat even when the feed system is otherwise closed. If the machine is stopped for more than 1 h, the hopper should remain heated and the feed throat purged before restart.
A general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1 to 25:1 and compression ratio 2.2:1 is typical for unfilled FR PC/ABS. High-shear screws with narrow melt-channel clearances may generate excessive shear heating and should be evaluated with melt-pressure data before use. Barrel setpoints for compounds of this class are often set between 240 °C and 270 °C from rear to nozzle, with the nozzle maintained 5 °C to 10 °C below the maximum zone to prevent drool. Mould temperature is usually 60 °C to 90 °C. Higher mould temperatures improve surface gloss, knit-line strength, and dimensional stability but increase cycle time. Injection speed should be set high enough to avoid hesitation lines in thin ribs; excessive speed can cause shear heating, jetting, and gate blush. Back pressure in the range of 3 bar to 7 bar hydraulic or equivalent specific pressure is used to homogenise the melt; higher back pressure may degrade the flame-retardant package and should be qualified by measuring the melt flow rate and UL 94 after extended residence.
Cavity pressure in thin-wall enclosures is commonly 350 bar to 500 bar. The required clamp force is the projected area multiplied by this cavity pressure. For a part with a projected area of 400 cm², the clamp force requirement would be 1400 kN to 2000 kN, excluding safety margin. This is a design calculation, not a material property. A melt cushion of 3 mm to 5 mm should be maintained to avoid nitrogen or air entrapment.
The phosphorus-based flame retardant used to achieve UL 94 V-0 can change the rheological response in two directions: it may lower viscosity at very low loading by acting as a partial plasticizer, but at the loading required for a flame-retardant rating it often raises melt viscosity and increases shear sensitivity relative to non-FR PC/ABS. Capillary rheometry at 260 °C and shear rates from 100 s⁻¹ to 1000 s⁻¹ typically shows that FR PC/ABS has a higher viscosity at low shear but a stronger shear-thinning slope than standard PC/ABS. This means flow length in thin walls may be acceptable at high injection speeds, but the material may freeze more quickly at low shear near the end of fill.
On a twin-screw extrusion compounding line with 40 L/D barrel length and vacuum venting, the melt temperature should be held below 280 °C for this class to limit decomposition of the phosphorus additive. In injection moulding, the same thermal boundary is relevant: hot-runner manifold temperatures above 300 °C can produce black specks, odour, and a loss of flame-retardant performance. All hot-runner nozzles and manifolds should have thermocouples calibrated to ± 1 °C. Residence time should not exceed 6 min to 8 min in the barrel if cycle time is interrupted. Frequent interruptions require purging to prevent carbon formation.
Mould deposit is a known production issue with flame-retardant PC/ABS. Volatile phosphorus species and lower-molecular-weight polycarbonate fractions migrate to the cavity surface after 12 h to 48 h of continuous moulding. The deposit can appear as a hazy film on polished steel or as a powder around vents. It interferes with adhesion, printing, and laser marking. The deposit rate is influenced by regrind level, hot-runner temperature, venting, and mould release. Production trials for FR5001TE should include a documented cleaning interval based on optical inspection or contact-angle testing. If the mould is textured, deposit can accumulate more rapidly; chemical cleaning agents should be tested for compatibility with the tool steel and the mould surface treatment.
Purging is part of production control. PC/ABS purge compound or polystyrene can be used to purge FR5001TE at the end of run, with slow screw rotation to avoid excessive shear. Water or steam cleaning of a hot barrel is not permitted. Avoid combination with polyvinyl chloride or acetal in the same hot-runner system; PVC can release hydrochloric acid that degrades polycarbonate, and acetal can generate formaldehyde. The barrel and hot runner should be thoroughly purged when changing from PVC or acetal to FR5001TE.
Regrind management is the main processing difference between FR5001TE and an unfilled non-FR PC/ABS. The flame-retardant package can degrade with repeated thermal histories, and the polycarbonate phase can lose molecular weight if moisture is not controlled. A common production rule for unfilled FR PC/ABS is to limit regrind to 20 wt% in virgin material, but the specific upper limit for FR5001TE must be qualified because it depends on the stabiliser package, the previous heat history, and the end-use requirement. Regrind generated from degraded runners, purgings, burned material, or parts with visible splay should not be re-used in flame-retardant components.
Gravimetric ratio feeders are recommended over volumetric blending when regrind bulk density differs from virgin pellet bulk density. The regrind stream should be screened through a 2 mm to 3 mm mesh and passed through a magnetic trap. A central grinder with sharp blades and proper screen size minimises fines; fines can alter melt homogeneity and increase the surface area available for moisture absorption. If regrind is stored in open containers, the moisture content can exceed the moulding limit within 2 h under humid conditions. When requalifying a regrind ratio, test plaques should be moulded and evaluated for notched Izod impact by ISO 180/A or ASTM D256, melt flow rate by ISO 1133-1 or ASTM D1238, and UL 94 vertical burn at the same thickness as the production part. A change in melt flow rate of more than 20 % relative to virgin material may indicate excessive chain scission or flame-retardant degradation.
At incoming inspection, melt flow rate and density are rapid checks. A shift in melt flow rate outside the agreed range can indicate wrong lot, moisture damage, or regrind contamination. For flame-retardant materials, density is an unreliable indicator of flame-retardant content because different flame retardants have different densities. Moisture content can be checked with a Karl Fischer titrator or a moisture-specific analyser; loss-on-drying methods overestimate water because they may volatilise low-molecular-weight additives.
Mechanical specification sheets for unfilled FR PC/ABS normally report tensile stress at yield according to ISO 527-2 or ASTM D638, flexural modulus according to ISO 178 or ASTM D790, notched Izod impact according to ISO 180/A or ASTM D256, and deflection temperature under load according to ISO 75-2 or ASTM D648. Cross-grade values for unfilled flame-retardant PC/ABS commonly fall in the following ranges: tensile yield stress 50 MPa to 60 MPa, flexural modulus 2400 MPa to 2800 MPa, notched Izod at 23 °C of 400 J/m to 700 J/m, and HDT at 1.82 MPa of 90 °C to 110 °C. These are not certified FR5001TE values; they are class benchmarks for initial tool design.

The table should be used only for tentative material substitution. FR5001TE may perform above or below the class window depending on the specific PC-to-ABS ratio, flame-retardant loading, and stabiliser package. For production decisions, a certified batch certificate from Dongguan Shengtai is required. Relative to standard unfilled PC/ABS, FR5001TE may require a lower rear-zone temperature and a shorter melt residence time. Relative to mineral-filled FR PC/ABS, it may have lower flexural modulus but higher notched impact. Relative to neat polycarbonate, it generally offers better flow and lower mould temperature but lower heat deflection temperature. Relative to flame-retardant ABS, it offers higher impact and heat resistance but may be more sensitive to moisture and solvent stress cracking.
Polycarbonate-based blends are susceptible to environmental stress cracking when exposed to aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, ketones, esters, and some alcohol formulations while under moulded-in or applied stress. If a housing is cleaned with isopropanol or a mixture of isopropanol and water, the compatibility must be evaluated on production-representative parts, not on unstressed plaques. The strain level from moulded-in stress can be high near gates, ejector pins, and ribs. A solvent wipe test on a production part after 48 h annealing at 70 °C may reveal cracking that is not visible after moulding. For FR5001TE, the flame-retardant package can modify the surface energy and the sensitivity to specific cleaning agents; the supplier should be consulted if the application requires cleaning with anything other than water or mild soap.
Paint adhesion on flame-retardant PC/ABS is not equivalent to that on standard PC/ABS. Phosphorus-containing flame retardants can migrate to the surface and reduce wetting. Adhesion should be checked after moulding, then after heat ageing at the specified upper service temperature. ISO 2409 cross-cut testing and ISO 4624 pull-off testing are commonly used for painted plastics. If the part is to be laser marked, the laser settings should be established on the actual FR5001TE colour because some flame retardants change the contrast and marking quality.
Electroplating of PC/ABS requires an etchable ABS-rich surface. Flame-retardant PC/ABS may etch at a different rate than standard electroplating grades. If FR5001TE is intended for decorative plating, the plater should qualify the etch bath and adhesion using the same part geometry and gate location. Continuous service temperature is not a single value. It depends on load, exposure time, and failure criterion. For unfilled FR PC/ABS, short-term heat resistance is reflected by HDT; long-term thermal ageing should be evaluated by tensile and impact retention after oven ageing at the rated service temperature. No universal long-term service temperature is assigned to FR5001TE without ageing data.
For electrical and electronic equipment, material documentation is part of the approval package. Unfilled flame-retardant PC/ABS used in this segment is generally expected to comply with the European Union RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863. Restricted substances include lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, polybrominated biphenyls, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, and the four phthalates DEHP, BBP, DIBP, and DBP. Specific limits are 0.1 wt% for most restricted substances and 0.01 wt% for cadmium. For FR5001TE, the supplier should provide a RoHS declaration that identifies the homogeneous material and the tested batch. The presence of halogen-free flame retardants can be documented by IEC 61249-2-21 or equivalent halogen-content methods if required, but halogen-free status is not the same as RoHS compliance and must be stated separately.

Documentation requirements often extend beyond the polymer supplier. The moulder is responsible for maintaining traceability from raw lot to finished part. If FR5001TE is used in a product that must meet low smoke or toxicity criteria such as EN 45545-2, the grade must be qualified in the final part configuration; a UL 94 listing alone is not sufficient. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and no claim is made that FR5001TE meets transportation fire standards without additional testing.
