Dongguan Shengtai PC/ABS FR3150 is a flame-retardant polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy supplied for injection-moulded electrical enclosures and structural supports. The model designation FR3150 separates it from non-flame-retardant PC/ABS within the manufacturer’s product matrix; the product is positioned to provide UL 94 V-0 performance at a wall thickness of 1.5 mm or 2.0 mm, subject to colour, regrind content, and current certification status. The blend combines the impact resistance and dimensional stability of polycarbonate with the processability of ABS, modified by a flame-retardant package whose exact chemistry should be confirmed from the supplier’s safety data sheet and UL Yellow Card. Principal use is in power adapter shells, battery brackets, switch covers, appliance control panels, and electric vehicle charging module housings. The material is not a single-use formulation: colour masterbatch, regrind level, and moulding conditions alter final flame performance.
The first difference is density. Unmodified PC/ABS often falls between 1.12 g/cm³ and 1.15 g/cm³; flame-retardant PC/ABS of this class typically shifts to 1.18 g/cm³–1.21 g/cm³. That density increase imposes a mass penalty of roughly 3%–6% on identical part geometry. Tensile elongation at break and notched Izod impact are lower than in non-FR PC/ABS because dispersed flame-retardant particles or plasticizing phosphate esters alter the polycarbonate-rich phase morphology. A general-purpose PC/ABS may show notched Izod impact above 50 kJ/m², while FR grades often fall to 35 kJ/m²–60 kJ/m² depending on wall thickness and temperature.
Compared with brominated FR PC/ABS, a halogen-free phosphorus-based FR3150 formulation would be expected to show lower smoke density and lower HDT under 1.8 MPa load, as phosphate esters plasticize the matrix. Brominated systems often retain HDT closer to 105°C–115°C, whereas halogen-free FR PC/ABS may fall to 90°C–105°C. Against polycarbonate-only FR grades, FR3150 offers lower low-shear viscosity and longer spiral flow length for thin-wall moulding but sacrifices heat resistance and ultraviolet stability. Against ABS-only FR grades, the polycarbonate component improves heat deflection and notched impact, while the ABS component lowers melt viscosity compared with polycarbonate. The exact additive package for FR3150 must be verified: migration kinetics of low-molecular-weight phosphate esters can produce mould plate-out during long runs, while brominated packages may pose different recyclability constraints under WEEE and RoHS.
Representative class values for a flame-retardant PC/ABS of the FR3150 type are listed below. Published data for FR3150-specific pvT, shear viscosity, and long-term creep is limited; design calculations should use moulded plaques made from the exact colour and regrind ratio.
| Property | Test method | Typical class range for FR PC/ABS |
|---|---|---|
| Density | ISO 1183-1 | 1.18 g/cm³–1.21 g/cm³ |
| Melt flow rate | ISO 1133-1:2022, 260°C/5 kg | 10 g/10 min–25 g/10 min |

| Flexural modulus | ISO 178 | 2,300 MPa–2,700 MPa |
| Notched Izod impact, 23°C | ISO 180/1A | 35 kJ/m²–60 kJ/m² |
| HDT, 1.8 MPa | ISO 75-2 | 90°C–110°C |
| UL rating | UL 94 | V-0 at 1.5 mm–2.0 mm, colour dependent |
Mould shrinkage to ISO 294-4 is typically 0.4%–0.7% in flow direction and 0.5%–0.8% transverse. Shrinkage anisotropy is increased by glass fibre if a filled variant is selected, but unfilled FR3150 should be treated as isotropic only for initial tool design. Capillary rheometry at 260°C and shear rate 1,000 s⁻¹ for this class shows apparent viscosity between 80 Pa·s and 150 Pa·s; FR3150-specific data should be measured if mould flow simulation is used. Batch-to-batch notched Izod impact variation can exceed ±5 kJ/m² when recycled content or colour masterbatch is present above 2 wt%.
PC/ABS equilibrium moisture uptake at 23°C and 50% RH reaches 0.15 wt%–0.25 wt%. Moulding at moisture above 0.05 wt% causes hydrolysis of polycarbonate segments and flame-retardant additives, producing splay, silver streaks, reduced molecular weight, and loss of V-0. A desiccant dryer with dew point ≤ −40°C is required. Drying at 80°C for 4 h–6 h is standard for virgin pellets; regrind and high-humidity storage may require 8 h. Hot-air hopper dryers are inadequate above 60% RH because outlet air cannot reach the required dew point. Moisture analysis by Karl Fischer titration is preferred over loss-on-drying; volatile FR degradation products can interfere with weight-loss readings. Once dried, material exposed to 60% RH air for more than 30 min begins to re-absorb moisture; closed-loop conveying or a desiccant hopper with insulated hoses should be maintained.
Process settings follow the constraints of flame-retardant PC/ABS rather than general-purpose PC/ABS. Barrel profile from rear to nozzle is typically 230°C/245°C/255°C/260°C; nozzle temperature is held at 255°C–265°C. Melt temperature above 280°C accelerates hydrolysis of phosphate-ester FR additives and generates acidic volatiles. Total residence time at 260°C should not exceed 10 min; longer residence produces brown streaks, viscosity reduction, and V-0 failure. Screw L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1 with compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 is conventional. High-shear screws with narrow channels create local temperature peaks above set point and should be avoided. Back pressure is maintained at 0.3 MPa–0.7 MPa; injection velocity for 2.0 mm wall parts is typically 50 mm/s–100 mm/s. Holding pressure is set from 50 MPa to 70 MPa and adjusted until gate freeze is achieved. Mould temperature is maintained at 60°C–90°C; lower settings reduce gloss and increase residual stress. Hot runner manifolds require streamlined channels and elimination of dead spots, because stagnant melt degrades to black specks. Purging with heat-stable polycarbonate after production runs is recommended.
On a co-rotating twin-screw extruder used for FR masterbatch dilution or compounding, L/D of 40:1–44:1 with vacuum venting at −0.08 MPa is typical. Barrel zones are held at 230°C–260°C; screw speed of 300 rpm–600 rpm is common. Sustained speeds above 800 rpm may raise melt temperature above 280°C and degrade the flame-retardant package. Vacuum vent failure traps moisture and causes phosphate ester decomposition products to plate out on the die lip. If strand pelletizing shows die-hole buildup, moisture or local overheating should be checked before increasing vent vacuum.
Applications for FR3150 are concentrated in electrical safety components where thin walls, flame retardancy, and dimensional stability are specified. AC/DC adapter shells, power strip enclosures, electric vehicle charging module brackets, battery housing covers, industrial control switch plates, and appliance control panels are common. End-use testing usually includes glow-wire flammability per IEC 60695-2-11 at 750°C or 850°C depending on appliance standard and accessibility. Unprotected PC/ABS should not be used for continuous outdoor exposure unless UV-stabilized or painted; UV exposure causes yellowing and low-temperature impact loss. Continuous contact with hot water above 70°C should be avoided unless hydrolytic stabilizers are confirmed in the formulation. For load-bearing electrical brackets, creep and fatigue data for FR3150-specific batches is limited; prototype testing under end-use load and temperature is required.
Compliance claims must be tied to the current certificate of analysis and the UL Yellow Card for the exact grade and colour. The following matrix lists commonly required standards for this product class; inclusion in the table does not itself certify FR3150.
| Requirement | Standard or regulation | Typical criterion for FR PC/ABS |
|---|---|---|
| Flame retardancy | UL 94 | V-0 at 1.5 mm–2.0 mm |
| Glow-wire flammability | IEC 60695-2-11 | GWFI 850°C or 960°C depending on end product |
| Glow-wire ignition | IEC 60695-2-13 | GWIT ≥ 775°C at specified wall |
| Comparative tracking index | IEC 60112 | CTI 175 V–250 V for FR PC/ABS class |
| RoHS hazardous substances | IEC 62321 / EU 2011/65/EU | Pb, Hg, Cd, Cr(VI), PBB, PBDE below threshold |
| REACH SVHC | Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 | Current SVHC list compliance declared by supplier |
Operational boundaries include avoidance of direct food contact and medical implant applications unless specific FDA 21 CFR or ISO 10993 certifications are supplied in writing. The product should not be processed on equipment previously contaminated with PVC or acetal without thorough purging; thermal decomposition products can cause discolouration and acid evolution. If barrel shutdown exceeds 15 min at melt temperature, barrel temperatures should be reduced to 180°C–200°C or the screw purged. Regrind use above 20 wt% may shift MFR by 2 g/10 min–5 g/10 min and reduce notched Izod impact by 10%–20%; each regrind addition requires re-qualification of flame performance at minimum wall thickness.
UL 94 V-0 measures vertical burn time and cotton ignition under a small flame at a defined specimen thickness. It does not predict behaviour under a hot-wire fault or conductive tracking. Glow-wire flammability per IEC 60695-2-11 applies a heated wire to the moulded surface and records flame persistence and ignition of wrapping paper. For unattended appliances, GWFI at 850°C is widely specified; thicker sections may achieve 960°C. Comparative tracking index per IEC 60112 measures the voltage at which a conductive path forms across an insulating surface exposed to electrolyte drops. FR PC/ABS with high phosphorus content may show CTI values of 175 V–250 V, but this is not guaranteed by V-0 alone. High-voltage connectors, PCB mounting bosses, and motorized appliance switch covers require separate CTI and GWIT verification at the final wall thickness and colour. Published data for FR3150-specific CTI and GWIT values is limited; a production-representative moulded plaque should be tested under the end-product standard.
Batch-to-batch variation in melt flow rate should be monitored by ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260°C/5 kg. A release limit of ±2 g/10 min relative to the qualified reference often detects compounding drift. Notched Izod impact should be checked by ISO 180/1A at 23°C; acceptance limits should reflect end-use impact requirements rather than a single generic value. Incoming resin should be sampled for moisture by Karl Fischer titration; acceptance is typically ≤ 0.05 wt%. If production lots show mould vent plate-out or hot runner gate deposits, additive dispersion should be examined by ash content or scanning electron microscopy. Dimensional stability should be verified after 24 h at 23°C/50% RH before release to assembly.
