    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Shengtai ABS XJ757 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied as a pelletised feedstock for injection moulding and extrusion. The model identifier XJ757 denotes a specific formulation within the Dongguan Shengtai ABS range, but the suffix alone does not communicate melt flow rate, rubber content, additive package, or intended application; these attributes must be read from the supplier’s production-lot certificate. For initial screening only, class-typical general-purpose ABS values are density 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ by ISO 1183-1, melt volume-flow rate 5–25 cm³/10 min at 220°C under 10 kg load by ISO 1133-1:2022, tensile yield stress 35–50 MPa by ISO 527-2, notched Izod impact 15–35 kJ/m² by ISO 180/1A, flexural modulus 1.8–2.6 GPa by ISO 178, and Vicat softening temperature 95–105°C by ISO 306/B50. Grade-specific published data for Dongguan Shengtai ABS XJ757 are limited in open literature; therefore, tooling and process decisions require verification against lot-specific certificates rather than class-typical ranges.

Potential application classes are injection-moulded electrical enclosures with wall sections from 2.0 mm to 4.0 mm, appliance fascia panels, automotive interior trim substrates, furniture edge banding and profiles, and general industrial covers. Selection of XJ757 for any of these applications does not transfer from a generic ABS approval. Part geometry, gate location, pigment loading, and post-moulding operations such as ultrasonic welding, solvent bonding, painting, or chrome plating must be evaluated with the actual grade. ABS generally withstands dilute acids, alkalis, and alcohols, but it is attacked by ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents; stress cracking can develop when assembled parts contact plasticising oils or adhesive solvents.

How Should Dongguan Shengtai ABS XJ757 Be Dried Before Melt Processing?

Residual moisture in ABS becomes a process failure vector during melting because water vapourises in the screw and hydrolyses the acrylonitrile segment, producing splay, silver streaks, gate blush, and reduced weld-line strength. For general-purpose ABS, including XJ757 when no grade-specific drying instruction is issued, a desiccant dryer should maintain a dew point below −20°C and preferably below −40°C, with pellet residence at 80°C for 2–4 h. Dryer outlet moisture should be below 0.05 wt%, measured by ISO 15512 or equivalent Karl Fischer method. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, hopper loading from cold storage into an open hopper should be avoided unless a closed drying and conveying system is used.

At 50% RH, ABS can absorb roughly 0.2–0.4 wt% moisture in unsealed pellet storage. Over-drying is also a failure mode: if pellets are held above 90°C for more than 6 h, yellowing, additive migration, and pellet agglomeration can occur. Drying below 70°C leaves bound moisture incompletely removed. On production-scale injection moulding with 1,200 kN clamp force, the initial shot after startup from a wet hot-air hopper frequently shows gate blush and weld-line weakening; these defects are reduced only when dryer dew point and residence time are confirmed, not by increasing injection speed alone.

Drying hopper size should be matched to material consumption. Startup residence time in the hopper is not the same as pellet drying time, because a cold bed of pellets requires time to reach drying temperature. A hopper filled to 80% of its working volume with dried pellets should be used, rather than repeatedly operating with small inventory and frequent cold-material refill. The use of regrind should also be considered in drying, because fine particles and runner scrap dry faster than virgin pellets but can create feed segregation.

At the press, barrel temperature settings for XJ757 should begin from a flat or reverse profile unless the supplier certificate indicates a high-flow modifier package. Typical starting settings are feed throat 40–60°C, rear zone 180–200°C, centre zone 190–220°C, front zone 200–230°C, and nozzle 200–230°C. Mold temperature should be held at 40–80°C; higher mold temperature increases gloss and weld strength but increases cycle time and plate-out risk. Screw design should use an L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1, with shot size at 50–70% of barrel capacity. Injection pressure commonly falls at 70–120 MPa, with holding pressure at 50–70% of injection pressure and back pressure 0.3–0.7 MPa. Melt residence time above 230°C should not exceed 15 min; longer residence oxidises the polybutadiene rubber phase, causing yellowing, gel formation, and reduced notched impact.

Process conflicts arise when thin-wall filling demands high melt temperature and fast injection speed, while impact retention requires low shear and short residence time. The moulding route for XJ757 should therefore use the lowest melt temperature that fills the cavity, not the highest. If melt flow is too low, short shots occur; raising front zone beyond 240°C may momentarily improve fill but increases thermal degradation of the polybutadiene rubber phase. The result is a reduction in notched impact and surface yellowing that cannot be corrected by lowering mould temperature alone. Melt temperature measured by needle pyrometer should normally remain between 200°C and 240°C for unpigmented ABS; pigmented grades may shift this window by 5–10°C.

When regrind is added at 20 wt% or more, melt viscosity may shift upward and batch-to-batch variance increases, particularly if the regrind includes hot-runner runner scrap or parts with high surface area. Regrind from mixed sources should be checked against virgin pellets by ISO 1133-1:2022; a deviation greater than 15% indicates severe thermal degradation. Screw speed should generally be held at 40–80 rpm for a 25–35 mm screw, with cushion maintained at 3–6 mm. High screw speed and low back pressure can produce melt temperature overshoot and unmelted pellets, while excessive back pressure increases residence time and shear heating.

Comparative Position of XJ757 Against High-Impact and Heat-Resistant ABS Grades

Without a public grade datasheet, Dongguan Shengtai ABS XJ757 cannot be numerically assigned to a single ABS sub-class. However, the grade can be positioned by comparing required properties with class-typical ranges for general-purpose, high-impact, and heat-resistant ABS. The following reference values are typical industrial ABS ranges, not XJ757-specific values.

Grade class Melt volume-flow rate by ISO 1133-1:2022 Notched Izod impact by ISO 180/1A Vicat softening temperature by ISO 306/B50 Characteristic limitation
    General-purpose ABS 10–25 cm³/10 min 15–25 kJ/m² 95–103°C High flow; moderate toughness
High-impact ABS 5–15 cm³/10 min 25–45 kJ/m² 90–100°C Higher rubber content reduces stiffness and heat resistance
Heat-resistant ABS 5–15 cm³/10 min 10–20 kJ/m² 105–120°C Alpha-methylstyrene or maleimide modification increases heat but lowers flow and impact
XJ757 required verification Confirm by ISO 1133-1:2022 Confirm by ISO 180/1A Confirm by ISO 306/B50 Assign only after lot certificate

A practical differentiation path is to mould XJ757 against a general-purpose ABS control on the same tool and compare fill pressure, gloss, weld-line strength, and notched Izod. A high melt flow rate in XJ757 would make it preferable for thin-wall electrical enclosures and multi-cavity tools, but would reduce melt strength for extrusion or blow moulding. A low melt flow rate would favour thick-wall structural parts, extrusion sheet, or extrusion profiles requiring sag resistance. High rubber content would increase Izod impact but reduce surface hardness and chemical resistance. Heat-resistance additives would raise Vicat and HDT but reduce melt fluidity and increase plate-out. Consequently, XJ757 must be purchased with a certificate of analysis stating melt volume-flow rate, tensile yield stress, notched Izod impact, Vicat softening temperature, and ash content before it is compared with another grade.

An XJ757 grade with a melt volume-flow rate of 10–15 cm³/10 min would occupy the medium-flow or high-impact band; one above 20 cm³/10 min would behave like a high-flow general-purpose ABS. These assignments are class-logic, not supplier-certified. The purchaser should request a comparative lot certificate and, where possible, a two-sample t-test using ISO 1133-1:2022 and ISO 180/1A on 10 specimens per lot to detect significant differences before tool transfer.

In moulded part qualification, surface gloss and colour stability are frequently more restrictive than mechanical properties. For black or custom-coloured XJ757 parts, the base pellet should be tinted only with carriers that match the ABS melt index; use of a low-MFR polyolefin-based masterbatch can generate swirl and gloss variation. High-gloss surfaces require mold plate temperature above 60°C, polished tool surfaces with draft angles of at least 0.5–1° for textured surfaces, and conservative shear rates below 50,000 s⁻¹. High-flow ABS grades with MVR above 25 cm³/10 min may fill thinner walls but commonly exhibit lower melt strength and higher molecular orientation, leading to anisotropic shrinkage and warpage in flat panels. XJ757 should be screened for wall thickness, weld-line location, and gate freeze time, not selected only by melt flow rate or cost per kilogram.

Weld-line strength is a critical threshold in multi-gate tools. Weld lines in ABS typically retain 60–80% of the base unnotched tensile strength, but the actual retention depends on melt temperature, mould temperature, and pigment loading. For XJ757, a blind mould evaluation using a double-gate tensile specimen should be performed before releasing textured or plated parts, because paint and electroplating can amplify weld-line visibility even when mechanical strength is acceptable. If the supplier data are unavailable, this evaluation is the only reliable way to determine whether XJ757 can replace an existing qualified ABS grade.

Lot-Specific Compliance Data Separates XJ757 From Generic ABS Feedstock

Procurement acceptance for Dongguan Shengtai ABS XJ757 should require a mill certificate or lot certificate containing melt volume-flow rate by ISO 1133-1:2022, density by ISO 1183-1, tensile yield stress and elongation at break by ISO 527-2, notched Izod impact by ISO 180/1A, flexural modulus by ISO 178, Vicat softening temperature by ISO 306/B50, moisture content by ISO 15512, ash content, and any additive declarations. Regulatory compliance under REACH (EC 1907/2006) and RoHS (2011/65/EU) must be confirmed per shipment, because brominated flame retardants, antimony trioxide, or pigment masterbatches may create lot-level variation. If food-contact or toy use is proposed, migration testing according to FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 or EU 10/2011 and EN 71 migration limits should be performed on the finished part, not inferred from the ABS base resin.

Property Method XJ757 acceptance action Failure consequence
Melt volume-flow rate ISO 1133-1:2022 Compare to lot certificate; deviation greater than 15% triggers process adjustment Short shots, flash, warpage
Moisture content ISO 15512 Dry to below 0.05 wt% Splay, silver streaks, impact loss
Notched Izod impact ISO 180/1A Compare to design requirement; reject for impact-critical clips if below threshold Brittle failure in service
Vicat softening temperature ISO 306/B50 Check against maximum service temperature Softening, dimensional loss
Ash content Supplier method or ISO 3451-1 Confirm no unexpected inorganic filler or metal contamination Tool wear, surface defects

Published data for XJ757 in this specific configuration is limited; thus, a retained sample from the first production lot should be held for not less than 12 months to resolve field complaints or batch-to-batch questions. A processor should reject any XJ757 lot that shows a melt volume-flow rate outside the agreed certificate range, visible contamination, or moisture content above 0.1 wt% after normal drying. The same lot should be re-tested before transferring tooling from another ABS grade, because subtle shifts in rubber particle size, grafting efficiency, or mould-release package are not visible from pellet appearance but can change fill pressure, gloss, knit-line strength, and plate-out in production.
