    More Introduction

Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins are classified by ISO 2580-1 through a designatory block system based on melt volume-flow rate, notched Izod impact, Vicat softening temperature, and flexural modulus. Dongguan Shengtai ABS W757LD is introduced as a specialty injection-moulding grade within this resin class, distinguished from general-purpose W757-series materials by a density reduction or lubricated low-gloss modification, depending on the manufacturer suffix definition. Published third-party data for this exact designation is limited; therefore, numerical intervals presented in this document must be read as representative ranges for unfilled low-density ABS injection grades, not as a batch-specific certificate of analysis. The material should be evaluated against ISO 2580-1 designatory properties and ASTM D4673 classification cells, with supplementary review of density under ISO 1183-1 and melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022. A lot-specific datasheet should be obtained before tooling release.

How Are Specification Limits for ABS W757LD Established Across ISO and ASTM Code Systems?

ABS specification limits are derived from multi-cell designations, not from a single test result. Under ISO 2580-1, the base polymer is identified by a sequence covering melt volume-flow rate, notched Izod impact, Vicat softening temperature, and flexural modulus. Under ASTM D4673, the same information is presented as cell callouts for melt flow rate, Izod impact, tensile stress at yield, and heat deflection temperature. For a low-density injection grade, the key test methods include ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt volume-flow rate using a 220 °C barrel and a 10 kg load, ISO 527-2/1A/50 for tensile properties at 50 mm/min, ISO 178 for flexural modulus using a 2 mm/min test speed, ISO 180/A for notched Izod impact on edgewise specimens, ISO 306/B50 for Vicat softening temperature using a 50 N load and a 50 K/h heating rate, and ISO 1183-1 for density by water displacement or gas pycnometry. A representative unfilled ABS injection grade may fall within a density band of 1.03 g/cm³ to 1.07 g/cm³ and a melt volume-flow rate of 5 cm³/10 min to 25 cm³/10 min. If the LD modification reduces density by 3% to 6% relative to a 1.06 g/cm³ reference, density would approach 1.00 g/cm³ to 1.03 g/cm³; actual W757LD values must be confirmed on the production lot.

Property Test method General-purpose ABS Low-density ABS injection class
    Density ISO 1183-1 1.04–1.07 g/cm³ 1.00–1.04 g/cm³
    Melt volume-flow rate ISO 1133-1:2022, 220 °C/10 kg 5–15 cm³/10 min 8–25 cm³/10 min
Tensile stress at yield ISO 527-2/1A/50 40–50 MPa 35–45 MPa
Flexural modulus ISO 178 2200–2600 MPa 1900–2400 MPa
    Notched Izod impact ISO 180/A 15–35 kJ/m² 10–25 kJ/m²
    Vicat softening temperature ISO 306/B50 90–105 °C 85–100 °C

These intervals reflect the trade-off that occurs when a density-reduction package is introduced: melt fluidity improves while tensile modulus and Vicat softening temperature move toward the lower end of the unfilled ABS performance envelope. In a production environment, the difference between a 1.06 g/cm³ standard ABS and a 1.02 g/cm³ low-density variant translates directly into reduced part mass and shorter cooling time, but it also lowers the thermal-deformation resistance of bosses and snap-fit features. Moulds designed for standard ABS may therefore fill more easily with W757LD, yet pack-pressure settings must be adjusted because the low-density melt has higher compressibility at the same cavity pressure.

Moisture control is the first critical processing gate for W757LD. Residual moisture must be maintained below 0.1% by mass; otherwise volatiles expand in the metering zone and create splay, silver streaks, and gate-blush defects. Desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h with a dew point of −40 °C is a standard starting condition. If the LD modification raises processing-aid concentration or rubber-phase content, drying should not be extended beyond 4 h at 90 °C, because excessive hopper residence can oxidize the stabilizer package and produce surface yellowing. On a reciprocating-screw injection moulding machine with a 20:1 L/D screw, W757LD should be processed with a shot volume not exceeding 60% of barrel capacity, a melt temperature of 230 °C to 245 °C, and a mould surface temperature of 40 °C to 70 °C. Screw speed may be set at 50 rpm to 120 rpm with back pressure of 0.3 MPa to 0.7 MPa; increasing back pressure beyond 0.7 MPa can shear-heat the melt and generate local degradation in the SAN-rich phase, visible as yellow-brown streaks near the sprue. If the machine has a hot-runner system, the manifold should be balanced within ±5 °C of the set melt temperature. Screw recovery time, cushion position, and peak cavity pressure should be recorded after each cycle; a non-return valve leakage of 2% to 5% of shot volume produces dimensional drift exceeding 0.05 mm on a 1.5 mm wall.

A screw design with a low-shear barrier profile or a 25:1 L/D screw with a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1 improves melting uniformity. General-purpose screws with a shallow metering depth below 2.5 mm can overheat the SAN phase at screw speeds above 100 rpm. If the barrel has more capacity than the required shot volume, residence time should be calculated from plastification time and throughput; residence times above 5 min at 245 °C degrade the polybutadiene phase and can reduce notched Izod impact by more than 10% in unfilled ABS systems. Mould venting depth is also critical: for ABS, vent depths of 0.02 mm to 0.03 mm are typical; deeper vents create flash because low-viscosity LD material penetrates narrow gaps at pressures above 80 MPa.

Pressure–specific volume–temperature behaviour is central to packing and shrinkage control. A low-density ABS grade exhibits greater specific volume change during cooling than a mineral-filled or glass-filled ABS, which means holding pressure and holding time must be established by cavity-pressure transfer rather than by timer alone. The recommended switch-over point is a peak cavity pressure of 30 MPa to 50 MPa for technical components; holding pressure is typically 50% to 70% of injection pressure and is maintained until the gate freezes. Premature hold release before gate freeze allows melt backflow and creates sink marks above ribs, bosses, and internal snap features. Because W757LD is unfilled, linear mould shrinkage is broadly in the range of 0.4% to 0.7%, but published data for this specific configuration is limited.

Gate design also determines short-shot consistency and surface appearance. Restricted pin gates below 0.8 mm create shear rates exceeding 50,000 s⁻¹ at high injection speeds, which can reduce effective viscosity but risks shear-induced separation of the rubber phase. Edge gates or fan gates with land length of 0.5 mm to 1.0 mm are preferable for visible surfaces. In multi-cavity moulds, cavity balancing should maintain a fill-time variation below 5%; otherwise short shots and overpacked cavities coexist. Cavity-pressure sensors embedded behind the last fill point allow switch-over based on actual flow front rather than screw position.

Applications for a low-density ABS grade include non-load-bearing covers, enclosures, appliance front panels, and consumer electronics housings where part mass reduction, repetitive snap-fit assembly, and surface finish are required. Thin-wall sections from 1.2 mm to 2.5 mm are within the normal flow envelope of melt-flow-adjusted ABS, and flow length-to-wall thickness ratios of 100:1 to 150:1 can be achieved with suitable gate placement. In appliance front panels, the low-density grade may produce lower surface gloss due to lubricating additives; gloss should be measured under ISO 2813 at 60° geometry and not assumed from standard ABS data. Mould surface finish has a dominant effect: a polished SPI A2 finish can yield 60° gloss above 80 GU on standard ABS, but low-density modifications can reduce this by 10 GU to 30 GU, depending on additive package. Warpage in long flat panels is controlled by maintaining uniform mould temperature within ±5 °C across the core and cavity; differential cooling above 10 °C can produce bow exceeding 1 mm over a 300 mm length.

Comparative Property Structure Against Flame-Retardant and High-Heat ABS Grades

The low-density modification separates W757LD from flame-retardant and high-heat ABS grades in measurable ways: density, thermal stability, and flow length. Flame-retardant ABS based on brominated epoxy and antimony trioxide typically has a density above 1.15 g/cm³ and a lower melt flow rate than an unfilled low-density grade at equivalent injection pressure. High-heat ABS grades produced with α-methylstyrene comonomer increase Vicat softening temperature to 105 °C to 115 °C but require melt temperatures near 250 °C and exhibit narrower processing windows. The W757LD design target—if confirmed by the manufacturer—is the opposite: lower part mass, lower melt viscosity, and reduced shear heating in thin-wall filling, with acceptance of a lower heat-deflection ceiling. General-purpose W757-series grades without the LD modification generally retain higher stiffness and higher Vicat values but may require higher injection pressure to fill identical thin-wall geometry. Compared with glass-fibre-reinforced ABS containing 10% to 20% glass fibre, W757LD has lower tensile modulus—glass-filled ABS can exceed 4000 MPa to 6000 MPa—but better surface aesthetics and lower warpage. Compared with polycarbonate/ABS blends, W757LD has a lower heat-deflection temperature but better flow and lower processing cost. Compared with standard low-gloss extrusion ABS used in profiles, W757LD may share lubricant chemistry but is optimised for injection moulding dimensional tolerances, not for sheet extrusion thermoforming.

When W757LD Replaces Standard ABS in a Thin-Wall Electrical Enclosure

Material substitution in a thin-wall electrical enclosure is not limited to mechanical properties. The replacement must be revalidated under the relevant end-product standards: IEC 60695-2-11 for glow-wire flammability, IEC 60695-2-13 for glow-wire ignition temperature, IEC 60112 for comparative tracking index, and UL 94 for vertical burning classification. Unfilled low-density ABS typically does not meet V-0; it is generally restricted to HB or HB40 performance at wall thicknesses above 1.5 mm. If the enclosure requires V-0 at 1.5 mm, a flame-retardant ABS grade must be selected, increasing density and reducing melt flow. The moulding process should also be revalidated because cavity-pressure and gate-freeze time are not directly transferable from a standard ABS dataset. Process development on unfilled ABS grades indicates that hot-runner valve-gated tools with direct gating on ribs may exhibit gate blush when the LD-modified melt is injected at velocities above 150 mm/s; reducing injection velocity to 80 mm/s to 120 mm/s and increasing mould temperature to 60 °C can improve gate appearance without compromising fill.

Operational boundaries for W757LD include a maximum melt temperature of 260 °C and maximum total residence time of 5 min at melt temperature. Exceeding these conditions may produce black specks, acrid styrene monomer odour, and a measurable drop in notched Izod impact. The material should not be compounded with hygroscopic polyamide resins without independent pre-drying, because interfacial water release during melt blending creates voids and inconsistent impact data. Direct contact with methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, or strong ester plasticizers should be evaluated under ASTM D543 or ISO 22088, because these solvents induce environmental stress cracking in unfilled ABS. For regrind, addition up to 20% by mass is common for non-appearance parts, but batch-to-batch variance in melt flow and impact must be monitored to avoid shifts in twin-screw extruder torque or injection moulding cushion stability. Published data for Dongguan Shengtai ABS W757LD in all end-use configurations is limited; qualification must therefore be performed on moulded plaques from the actual production lot rather than on class-average values.
