Dongguan Shengtai ABS LD181 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied in pellet form. The designation LD181 is manufacturer-specific and does not by itself identify the material as a high-heat, electroplating, flame-retardant, or high-gloss specialty grade unless the lot certificate explicitly assigns that classification. Because public summary data for this specific configuration are limited, incoming-inspection limits should be based on the supplier’s certificate of analysis and not on generic resin tables.
The grade is composed of a continuous styrene-acrylonitrile phase and dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles. The rubber particle size distribution and gel content are fixed during polymerisation and control impact strength, gloss, thermal stability, and rheology. Injection moulders cannot adjust these features mechanically; process settings can only shift part properties within the limits established by the polymer architecture.
Incoming-inspection data for ABS LD181 should be generated under recognised methods. The following table reports industrial ranges for unfilled ABS injection grades rather than lot-specific release limits. These values support test-method selection and preliminary feasibility work; they are not a substitute for certified product specifications.

Pre-drying of ABS LD181 is not optional on high-humidity production floors. Moisture absorbed during open storage at 60% RH can exceed 0.10 wt% within 24 h; the maximum residual moisture before plastication is normally 0.05 wt%. A desiccant-wheel hopper dryer with air dew point below -20°C and temperature set to 80–90°C provides a drying time of 2–4 h for unfilled ABS. Halogen moisture analysers calibrated at 105°C are used for lot checks. Tray drying without air circulation should be avoided because surface crusting can occur while core moisture remains, leading to splay and gloss loss in thin-wall mouldings.
In-line moisture monitoring is useful when dryer throughput is high. If hopper dwell time falls below 2 h, splay defects tend to concentrate near gates and abrupt wall-thickness transitions. Vented barrels are not a substitute for drying because moisture already dispersed in the melt may not be removed efficiently under normal screw residence times.
At injection machines with general-purpose screws of 20:1 to 24:1 L/D and compression ratios of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1, barrel temperatures are normally profiled from 190°C at the feed section to 210–250°C at the metering section. The nozzle is set at 200–230°C, and mould surface temperature is controlled between 30°C and 60°C. Melt residence time above 250°C should be limited to less than 5 min because butadiene-phase degradation can reduce Charpy notched impact values measured by ISO 179-1/1eA and can deposit carbon at the nozzle tip.
Shot capacity should use 30–70% of barrel capacity to limit residence time. Non-return valves should be checked for leakage because ABS melt can accumulate in dead zones and darken. Screw wear in the compression zone increases shear heating and accelerates degradation; dimensional recovery of the screw should be verified against the machine manufacturer’s tolerance schedule.
| Process variable | Typical starting window for unfilled ABS |
|---|---|
| Pre-drying temperature | 80–90°C |
| Pre-drying time | 2–4 h |
| Residual moisture | <0.05 wt% |
| Melt temperature | 210–250°C |
| Nozzle temperature | 200–230°C |
| Mould surface temperature | 30–60°C |
| Injection pressure | 70–140 MPa |
| Holding pressure | 50–100 MPa |
| Back pressure | 0.5–2.0 MPa |
| Screw speed | 40–120 rpm |
| Regrind addition | 0–20 wt% |
At production scale, gate freeze and packing pressure control determine dimensional stability and appearance. Switch-over from velocity to pressure control is normally made at 95–98% of fill volume; holding pressure at 50–100 MPa for 2–5 s per millimetre of wall thickness compensates for shrinkage. Sink marks in ribs and bosses are controlled by limiting nominal wall thickness deviation to 0–25% of the adjacent face thickness. Weld-line impact can be 30–60% lower than the virgin value when melt fronts meet at a blind rib or boss; this reduction is evaluated with ISO 179-1/1eA specimens cut across the weld line. Gate geometry should be adjusted before packing pressure is increased because excessive holding pressure can magnify frozen-in stress and reduce environmental stress-crack resistance.
Injection speed is selected to avoid jetting and shear-induced gloss changes. For unfilled ABS, fill times of 0.5–2.0 s for wall thicknesses 1.2–3.0 mm are common; larger parts may require fill times up to 5 s. The screw cushion is maintained at 3–6 mm to ensure stable switch-over and to prevent nozzle leakage. If barrel temperatures are raised to increase flow, the lot-specific Charpy notched impact and Vicat softening temperature should be re-checked because thermal history can shift the butadiene-phase gel content and reduce measurable impact by 10–30%.
Gate diameter for unfilled ABS is normally 0.8–1.5 mm for wall thicknesses of 1.2–2.0 mm. Subgates and tunnel gates may require 0.8–1.2 mm. Pin gates below 0.8 mm can freeze before packing, causing sink marks and weak weld lines. Sprue bush orifice is commonly 3–6 mm, and cold runner diameters are typically 3–5 mm for multi-cavity tools. Runner length should be balanced within 5% between cavities to prevent cavity-to-cavity filling variance.
The substitution decision is controlled by the melt mass-flow rate reported under ISO 1133-1 at 220°C/10 kg. If LD181 is certified above 20 g/10 min, thin-wall sections down to 1.2 mm become potentially feasible in multi-cavity tools; if the value is below 10 g/10 min, gate size and filling pressure need to be evaluated for flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 100:1. High-flow ABS grades commonly exhibit notched impact strengths of 10–20 kJ/m², whereas lower-flow general-purpose grades may reach 20–35 kJ/m². The loss of impact should be accepted only after testing at 23°C and, if relevant, -30°C by ISO 179-1/1eA.
Applications for unfilled ABS injection grades of this class include electronic enclosures, appliance control panels, toys, and non-exposed automotive interior trim. Because LD181 is unfilled, paint adhesion and ultrasonic welding can be more consistent than glass-filled or mineral-filled materials, but the grade’s chemical resistance is limited to non-aromatic hydrocarbons and dilute acids. Strong aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents can cause stress cracking, particularly when frozen-in stress is high.
If the part is used in a household appliance enclosure, ball pressure testing under IEC 60695-10-2 at 125°C may be required. Unfilled ABS can show softening around 90–110°C Vicat B50, so the end-use test must be passed at the final wall thickness. Dimensional audits should be performed after 24 h conditioning at 23°C and 50% RH according to ISO 291.
Comparative positioning of LD181 against heat-resistant ABS, electroplating ABS, flame-retardant ABS, and ABS/PC blends is evaluated through four properties: heat deflection temperature under ISO 75-2/A at 1.80 MPa, Charpy notched impact under ISO 179-1/1eA, melt mass-flow rate under ISO 1133-1, and burning behaviour under UL 94. Heat-resistant ABS grades containing α-methylstyrene may exceed 100°C HDT at 1.80 MPa; LD181, if positioned as a standard unfilled injection grade, is more likely to fall below that threshold. Electroplating ABS is formulated with controlled butadiene particle size and high gel content for chromic-acid etching; LD181 should not be used for electroplating unless the supplier’s certificate explicitly validates etchability and plating adhesion.
Flame-retardant ABS typically contains brominated or phosphorus-based additives and is certified to UL 94 V-0 at thicknesses such as 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm. LD181 should be considered an HB-class material unless documentation demonstrates otherwise. ABS/PC blends generally offer higher heat deflection and notched impact but require higher melt and mould temperatures and are less fluid. If LD181 is substituted for an ABS/PC blend in a thin-wall housing, the reduction in heat resistance and impact must be checked against the end-use standard.
The grade should be stored below 30°C and protected from humidity; opened containers should be re-dried at 80°C for 2–4 h if exposed to 60% RH for more than 8 h. Regrind addition above 20 wt% is not recommended for appearance or impact-critical parts. The material should not be blended with polycarbonate, PVC, or flame-retardant additives without compatibility data, because phase separation, plate-out, and reduced weld-line strength can occur. End-use qualification must be based on lot-specific certificates and the cited test methods, not on generic class tables.
