    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS HB-2S is an unfilled polycarbonate/acrylonitrile–butadiene–styrene alloy supplied for injection-moulded housings, brackets, enclosures, and interior structural parts. The grade designation identifies the polymer blend, while HB is conventionally associated with a horizontal burning classification under UL 94 in this resin family; 2S is a supplier series identifier denoting a standard-flow general-purpose balance. Published product-specific datasheets for this exact configuration are limited; therefore the following processing and performance statements are class-level reference data for unfilled PC/ABS alloys and must be superseded by the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis. The material is normally specified where moderate heat resistance, impact retention at wall thicknesses from 2.0 mm to 3.2 mm, and lower density than flame-retardant PC/ABS are required, and where the application does not impose a vertical flame classification.

What Drying and Melt Preparation Parameters Control HB-2S Processing Integrity?

Residual moisture is the critical processing variable for this alloy. Polycarbonate segments undergo hydrolytic chain scission when the moisture content exceeds 0.02% by weight at melt temperature; moisture content should be verified in accordance with ISO 15512:2019 Method B. Drying should be performed in a desiccant dryer with return-air dew point at or below −40 °C, pellet-bed temperature between 80 °C and 100 °C, and residence time of 3–4 h. Hot-air ovens are not a reliable substitute when ambient relative humidity is high or when material has been exposed to humid storage. Overdrying beyond 6 h at 100 °C can oxidise the butadiene phase and yellow the polycarbonate-rich matrix, producing visible surface defects and reduced notched Izod impact after moulding. In production-scale central drying systems, the return-air dew point and dry-air volumetric flow must be monitored continuously rather than inferred from hopper temperature alone.

The melt-temperature window for unfilled PC/ABS of this class is 250–280 °C measured by needle pyrometer at the nozzle. Barrel profiles are typically set from 240 °C in the rear zone to 260–280 °C at the front zone and nozzle. Temperatures above 290 °C accelerate polycarbonate degradation and should be avoided during steady-state cycling and hot-runner idle. If the hot-runner system is stopped, manifold and nozzle temperatures should be reduced to below 240 °C when interruption exceeds a few minutes, or the system should be purged to avoid black-spec formation. Injection moulding machines with screw L/D ratios of 18:1–22:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1–2.5:1 are acceptable; back pressure is generally maintained at 3–8 MPa, with screw speed between 40 rpm and 100 rpm. Melt residence time should not exceed 15 min at 260 °C or 8 min at 280 °C. Worn check-ring surfaces and excessive screw-back leakage can produce melt-temperature drift and short shots even when barrel settings are unchanged.

Mould temperature exerts direct control over surface finish, weld-line strength, and post-mould dimensional stability. A mould-temperature band of 60–90 °C is used for unfilled PC/ABS in enclosure tooling. Core and cavity temperature differences should be held to 10 °C or less to reduce differential shrinkage and warpage. Injection pressure for wall thicknesses of 2.0–3.2 mm normally falls between 70 MPa and 120 MPa, with hold pressure at 50–70% of peak injection pressure. Gate shear rate should be controlled by gate diameter and volumetric fill rate; vent depths of 0.02–0.03 mm are typical for this melt class. Failures associated with inadequate drying frequently present as silver streaks, surface delamination, or brittle fracture at knit lines. Such failures should not be interpreted as material defects until residual moisture and hopper-air conditions have been ruled out by measurement.

Mechanical characterisation of unfilled general-purpose PC/ABS alloys comparable to HB-2S is conventionally performed under ISO 527-2, ISO 178, ISO 180, and ISO 75-2. The reference values in the following table are assembled from class-level supplier datasheets for unfilled PC/ABS, ABS, and flame-retardant PC/ABS. They are intended for preliminary material selection only and do not replace product-specific certification for Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS HB-2S.

The comparative band indicates that HB-2S, as an unfilled HB-class PC/ABS, occupies an intermediate position between standard ABS and flame-retardant PC/ABS. Compared with ABS, the PC/ABS alloy typically raises heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa by 10–25 °C and increases notched Izod impact, but imposes higher drying demand and higher melt temperature. Compared with a V-0 flame-retardant PC/ABS, the HB-2S designation does not carry the same fire-protection function; ignition-source severity, wall thickness, and final part geometry must be evaluated under the relevant end-product standard.

When HB-2S Replaces ABS, Glass-Filled ABS, or Flame-Retardant PC/ABS in Enclosure Manufacturing

Substitution of HB-2S into enclosures originally designed for ABS or ABS/PC should account for differences in viscosity, shrinkage, and heat performance. Compared with medium-impact ABS, the unfilled PC/ABS class raises HDT at 1.82 MPa by approximately 10–25 °C, permitting service near internal power supplies, automotive cabin panels, or other moderate heat sources. However, many ABS grades have low enough moisture uptake to be processed with less intensive drying, whereas HB-2S requires desiccant drying before every sustained production run. The melt temperature for HB-2S is also 30–50 °C higher than that of typical ABS, increasing barrel heating load and required cooling time. Mould shrinkage for unfilled PC/ABS is usually in the range of 0.5–0.7%, while ABS mould shrinkage commonly ranges from 0.4% to 0.7%; fitting existing tooling therefore requires dimensional validation because local shrinkage differences can alter snap-fit deflection and boss location.

Compared with 20% glass-filled ABS, HB-2S has lower flexural modulus and greater ductility. Glass-filled ABS often reports flexural modulus from 4000 MPa to 6000 MPa, while unfilled PC/ABS remains below 2700 MPa. Therefore HB-2S should not be used as a direct replacement where deflection under sustained mechanical load is the limiting design criterion. It is better suited for clips, snap-fits, and impact-loaded boss regions because the unfilled alloy retains higher elongation at yield. For structural parts carrying constant load, creep testing under ISO 899-2 is required because the lower modulus of the unfilled alloy can produce unacceptable long-term deformation even if short-term tensile strength appears sufficient.

Compared with a flame-retardant PC/ABS classified V-0 at 1.6 mm, HB-2S lacks the same ignition-resistant additive package. The V-0 reference band in the table typically has higher density and may exhibit lower notched Izod impact because of flame-retardant fillers or char-promoting additives. HB-2S therefore offers lower density and a cleaner melt-viscosity profile for some unrated enclosures, but it is not appropriate for components adjacent to unprotected power electronics, open-contact relays, or other potential ignition sources requiring vertical flame tests. When an end-product standard requires V-2, V-1, or V-0, a flame-retardant grade should be selected instead of HB-2S unless the manufacturer has certified the specific thickness and colour under the required test.

Dimensional Stability, Environmental Compliance, and Solvent Resistance Boundaries

Post-mould dimensional stability in unfilled PC/ABS is governed by mould shrinkage and absorbed moisture. Mould shrinkage for reference grades typically ranges from 0.5% to 0.7% along the flow direction, with transverse shrinkage slightly lower; this should be validated using cavity-pressure instrumented trials rather than generic tables. Moisture absorption at saturation under ISO 62 is generally 0.2–0.4%, which can produce slight expansion in high-humidity service. Pre-conditioning of parts at 23 °C and 50% RH before dimensional inspection is consistent with thermoplastics testing practice. If the part is to be measured for assembly tolerances after shipment, the inspection environment and conditioning time should be standardised to avoid misleading pass/fail decisions caused by transient moisture uptake.

Environmental compliance must be verified with the supplier’s material declaration. Dongguan Qiantai can be requested to provide RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II screening and REACH EC 1907/2006 candidate-list statements. An unfilled HB-class PC/ABS may be reported by suppliers as free of intentionally added brominated or chlorinated flame retardants, but batch-specific verification is required because raw-material sourcing and pigment concentrates can vary. The UL 94 HB classification is thickness-dependent; a final part wall below 1.6 mm may not retain the same rating unless separately tested. Flame rating should be re-evaluated in the final colour because pigments and processing aids can affect burn-rate behaviour, especially in thin sections.

Chemical resistance boundaries are relevant in service. The polycarbonate phase in HB-2S is susceptible to environmental stress cracking when exposed to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, and strong alkaline cleaners under moulded-in stress. Ammonia and amine-based additives should not be used in contact with the melt or in the final application because they can promote polycarbonate degradation; this incompatibility extends to certain amine-cured adhesives, sealing compounds, and mould-release products. Cleaning of moulded parts should avoid solvent-soaked wipes unless the supplier has approved the specific solvent for stressed PC/ABS. If external cleaning or paint adhesion must be qualified, testing should include mechanical property retention after chemical exposure rather than visual inspection alone.

Published data for this specific configuration are limited, particularly for long-term heat ageing, fatigue, and outdoor ultraviolet exposure. The supplier’s application engineering bulletin should be consulted before qualifying HB-2S for unpainted exterior use or for continuous service above 80 °C; polycarbonate-rich alloys can lose impact after prolonged thermal ageing at elevated temperatures, and part design must account for possible changes in tensile creep behaviour at the upper end of the application temperature range.
