Application of Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS FR-32

Production-scale integration of Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS FR-32 into AC wallbox enclosures and DC charging plug carriers has centered on the competing demands of UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm wall stock and the mechanical loading sequences defined in IEC 62196-1:2022. In this application the compound is run as 100 wt% of the polymer phase in the molded part; when sprue and runner regrind is reintroduced, the FR-32-rich fraction is held at or above 85 wt%, and dilution with general-purpose PC/ABS below 80 wt% has shifted ignition behavior from V-0 to V-2 in rib sections adjacent to charge coupler latching features. Commercial production has therefore standardized on sealed regrind loops with no more than 15 wt% recycled FR-32 in the weigh hopper. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 4 h reduces residual moisture to <0.02%; barrel temperatures are profiled from hopper to nozzle at 240 °C, 250 °C, 255 °C, and 260 °C, with the nozzle held at 255 °C to prevent stagnation of the flame retardant package. Mold temperatures are maintained at 60–80 °C with a tolerance of ±2 °C; if the melt front drops below 230 °C during cavity filling, weld-line delamination has been observed after thermal cycling from -40 °C to 85 °C. Housing tools with projected areas above 0.15 m² require clamp force between 2500 kN and 3500 kN, and sequential valve gating is used to move weld lines away from latch bosses and cable strain-relief ribs. Terminal part types manufactured from this process include AC wallbox enclosures, DC charging plug shells, contact carrier plates, and coupler mounting brackets.

What Limits Injection Speed in Thin-Wall USB-C Charger Shells?

In 1.2 mm nominal wall USB-C power delivery charger shells, the limiting variable is not the melt flow rate of FR-32 but the shear heat generated at the gate land when fill speed is raised above 300 mm/s. The resin is specified against UL 94 V-0 at 1.2 mm, and the end-product flammability requirement is verified under IEC 62368-1:2023; parts positioned above primary power supply stages are additionally subjected to IEC 60695-2-12:2021 GWFI at 775 °C for 30 s. The molding formulation is maintained at ≥ 95 wt% FR-32 relative to total compound because thin-section V-0 behavior falls away when color masterbatch and regrind together exceed 5 wt% cumulative. Typical production settings are barrel profile 245–265 °C, mold temperature 60–70 °C, injection speed 200–300 mm/s, holding pressure 80–100 MPa, and gate diameter not below 0.8 mm. At 1.0 mm wall, packing time is limited to 1.5–2.0 s; shorter packing produces sink marks over the USB-C connector overmold, while longer packing generates parting-line flash because the flame retardant matrix retains low viscosity in the gate freeze interval. Residual moisture above 0.03% produces silver streaking at the gate side, and barrel residence time beyond 8 min at 265 °C increases yellowness index by more than 2.0 units on the colorimeter. Terminal parts manufactured under these parameters include GaN adapter shells, USB-C hub housings, laptop power adapter shells, and power bank frames.

Medical diagnostic consoles using Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS FR-32 are specified when short-term patient-contact housings must satisfy IEC 60601-1:2005/AMD2:2020 enclosure mechanical integrity and UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm without changing resin chemistry from existing PC/ABS tooling. The resin is run as 100 wt% virgin compound; regrind is excluded from patient-contact parts to preserve lot traceability, and any masterbatch is limited to 2 wt% with ISO 10993-5:2009 and ISO 10993-10:2013 documentation for skin contact duration up to 24 h. Injection molding takes place in ISO 14644-1 Class 8 cleanrooms with melt temperature 250 °C, mold temperature 70 °C, screw back pressure 0.5 MPa, and dry-air hopper set to 80 °C with 4 h residence. Part release is limited to silicone-free external mold releases not exceeding 0.1 wt% of the shot weight to avoid elastomeric surface contamination on diagnostic bezels. Terminal parts include ultrasound cart consoles, patient monitor rear enclosures, IVD analyzer front frames, and electrocardiograph housing shells.

Glow Wire Coil Testing at 850°C for Distribution Box Covers

Low-voltage distribution box covers produced from FR-32 are designed around IEC 61439-1:2020 assembly requirements and are subjected to glow wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11:2014 at 850 °C for 30 s because the part remains in contact with live busbar supports. The formulation in 2.5–3.0 mm wall covers is 100 wt% FR-32; regrind from rejected covers is allowed at ≤ 20 wt% only when its melt flow rate after recycling remains within ±15% of virgin material, otherwise the glow wire ignition time can be reduced, requiring lot-specific validation before serial release. Molding uses sequential valve gating on a 6500 kN clamp unit, melt temperature 250 °C, mold temperature 70 °C, cooling time 25–35 s, and holding pressure 60–80 MPa; flat covers above 400 mm × 400 mm require central and edge gates timed at 0.8–1.2 s intervals to avoid gas traps at the parting line. For busbar insulating supports with metal insert threads, insert temperature is kept at 130 °C to 150 °C to prevent localized freezing and sink over the insert. Terminal product types include distribution box covers, switchboard panels, busbar insulating supports, and meter enclosure front frames.

When Low-VOC Requirements Override Standard Flame Retardancy in Cabin Air Handling

Automotive HVAC housings and steering column shrouds using FR-32 are specified where FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795 horizontal burn rates are required, but cabin air quality limits raw material VOC emissions under OEM test methods derived from VDA 277. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; therefore, lot-specific headspace values must be confirmed on production tooling before serial molding, particularly for parts installed in the cabin air plenum. The compounding addition ratio is 100 wt% FR-32, with color masterbatch limited to ≤ 5 wt%; regrind from interior parts is limited to ≤ 10 wt% because returned molded scrap raises VOC emission values by concentrating low-molecular-weight degradation products at the surface. Melt temperature is held at the lower end of the processing window, 240–245 °C, to reduce thermal degradation; mold temperature is 60–80 °C; injection speed is 40–80 mm/s for thick bosses in HVAC shells to prevent jetting. The flame retardant package should not be combined with amine-based mold release agents or hindered amine light stabilizers because surface exudation has been observed in accelerated heat aging at 85 °C for 500 h, producing a tacky deposit on the part surface. Terminal part types are HVAC plenum halves, steering column upper and lower shrouds, center console side panels, and instrument cluster support frames.

Airflow-optimized switch and router chassis molded from Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS FR-32 require UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm and dimensional stability across service temperatures from -20 °C to 60 °C under continuous load, as specified by NEBS GR-63-CORE for central office equipment and IEC 62368-1:2023 for fire enclosure requirements. The compound is used at 100 wt% FR-32, with regrind limited to ≤ 10 wt% where internal creepage and clearance distances rely on the insulating material integrity of the resin. Injection molding parameters are barrel profile 245–265 °C, mold temperature 60–80 °C, holding pressure 70–90 MPa; parts are post-mold conditioned at 80 °C for 2 h to relieve internal stress before metal insert installation. For chassis panels with integral snap fits, the gate land is designed with a depth of 0.8–1.0 mm and a land length of 1.5–2.0 mm to preserve packing pressure in thin ribs. Terminal parts manufactured under these conditions include router chassis, switch front panels, optical line terminal frames, and network cabinet ventilation grilles.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS FR-32 is a flame-retardant polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene alloy developed for injection moulding and limited extrusion of electrical enclosures, power distribution housings, smart-meter frames, and consumer electronics chassis where a UL 94 V-0 classification at 1.6 mm is required. The model designation FR-32 identifies the third flame-retardant formulation within the Qiantai PC/ABS series; the base resin is an impact-modified PC/ABS blend, and the flame-retardant system is phosphorus-based rather than brominated diphenyl ether chemistry. The compound is supplied in natural and black pellet form, and the supplier’s lot-specific certificate of analysis controls exact values. Representative data in this document are drawn from the current technical bulletin, processing guide, and supplier-reported production-scale observations; they are not specification limits and do not replace first-article inspection on final part geometry.

Unlike standard PC/ABS grades that are rated HB under UL 94 and rely on limited char formation, FR-32 contains a char-promoting organophosphorus additive package that shortens afterflame time in thin cross-sections. The resulting char influences mould deposit behaviour. On 1,500 kN electric injection moulding machines producing power tool battery housings in 24/7 operation, the material has shown lower volatile condensate accumulation on vent pins than brominated grades using antimony trioxide synergists. Tool cleaning intervals nevertheless depend on hot-runner temperature, shear history, and vent maintenance; the phosphorus-based system does not eliminate deposit formation.

Property Data Reported Under ISO and UL Protocols

Tensile and flexural specimens are injection moulded according to ISO 294-1:2017 and conditioned at 23 °C and 50% RH for 88 h before testing, unless otherwise specified. The values in the table below are representative mid-range data for natural colour; colour concentrates or regrind addition above 20% shift these values and may invalidate the UL 94 classification.

Prior to injection moulding, pellets must be dried in a desiccant dryer with a dew point below -30 °C for 4 h at 80 °C. If storage relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying time should be extended to 8 h. Residual moisture above 0.02% produces splay, jetting, and reduced weld-line strength in walls below 0.8 mm. Melt temperature measured at the nozzle should be maintained at 240–270 °C. The upper limit is sensitive: excursions above 270 °C for more than 15 minutes initiate thermo-oxidative degradation of the polycarbonate phase, visible as brown streaking, loss of notched impact strength, and an increase in melt flow rate. Mould temperatures of 60–90 °C are required to develop surface gloss and to minimize internal stress in snap-fit posts; lower mould temperatures produce high frozen-in orientation and reduce impact.

Capillary rheometry per ISO 11443:2021 on dried pellets indicates apparent shear viscosity near 120 Pa·s at 260 °C and 1,000 s⁻¹, decreasing to approximately 60 Pa·s at 1,500 s⁻¹. This shear-thinning response supports short injection times in multi-cavity tools. For compounding or masterbatch dilution, a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D ratio of 40:1 and segmented screw elements is specified; distributive mixing elements positioned after the melting zone avoid excessive shear heating that can degrade the flame-retardant additive. Injection back pressure should be held between 0.5 MPa and 1.0 MPa, and screw recovery speed in the 40–120 rpm range is common. High shear rates above 1,000 s⁻¹ may reduce molecular weight of the butadiene phase and lower impact strength by 10–15%. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; in-house rheology verification before mould filling simulation is recommended.

Moisture absorption in PC/ABS is predominantly governed by the polycarbonate phase, and the polarity of the phosphorus-based flame retardant accelerates surface adsorption at high humidity. Drying equilibrium at 80 °C reaches below 0.02 wt% residual moisture within 4 h in a desiccant dryer supplying air with dew point -30 °C; however, if regrind is added above 20%, drying time extends because regrind particles exhibit variable particle size distribution. In production, a hopper loader with moisture analyser is recommended to avoid running wet material into the barrel. Hydrolytic chain scission of polycarbonate during moulding is measurable as a reduction in melt viscosity from 120 Pa·s to below 90 Pa·s at 260 °C and 1,000 s⁻¹, and the resulting moulded parts show reduced weld-line strength and lower notched impact strength. These failure modes are well documented on production-scale equipment and are not specific to FR-32 alone, but the flame-retardant additive reduces the permissible moisture window compared with non-flame-retardant PC/ABS.

Gate location and weld-line placement are critical: the phosphorus-based flame-retardant package reduces interfacial entanglement across weld lines, and moulded-in tensile strength at a weld line drops to 45–55% of the un-welded value when tested according to ISO 527-2:2012. In electrical enclosures with snap-fit closures, rib-to-wall thickness ratio should be kept below 0.6:1 to prevent sink marks and to maintain dimensional stability under IEC 60068-2-30 damp-heat cycling. The supplier’s mould design guide recommends cold slug wells for tunnel gates and vent depths of 0.01–0.02 mm on the parting line.

Thermo-oxidative degradation above 270 °C follows a residence-time-dependent molecular weight reduction mode that is not linear: short residence times up to 5 minutes produce negligible property loss, while 15 minutes at 280 °C reduces notched Charpy impact by 15% and 30 minutes produces a brittle failure mode at room temperature. The supplier therefore recommends a melt residence time below 10 minutes and a shot size between 40% and 70% of barrel capacity to prevent stagnant zones in the compression section.

The phosphorus-based flame retardant operates primarily in the condensed phase by promoting cross-linking and char formation on the polycarbonate surface, reducing fuel and heat release. This mechanism differs from brominated systems, which act in the gas phase and require antimony trioxide to generate antimony tribromide radicals. The condensed-phase mechanism in FR-32 contributes to lower visible smoke density during burning, but published data for this specific configuration is limited and smoke-density performance should be verified by ISO 5659-2:2024 when optical transmission is a design requirement.

When Thin-Wall V-0 at 1.6 mm Governs Electrical Enclosure Design

In compact power adapters and smart-meter housings with nominal wall thickness between 1.2 mm and 2.0 mm, the combination of melt volume-flow rate near 18 cm³/10 min and a char-forming flame-retardant package permits filling of multi-cavity tools with hot-runner gate diameters down to 1.0 mm. Vertical burn testing per UL 94 on conditioned specimens at 1.6 mm produces afterflame times below the 10 s criterion, with no flaming drips. Glow-wire ignition temperature per IEC 60695-2-13 is reported by the supplier as 775 °C at 1.5 mm, and glow-wire flammability index per IEC 60695-2-12 is 850 °C at the same thickness, which aligns with IEC 60335-1 unattended-appliance requirements for current-carrying parts. These values are lot-dependent and must be confirmed on the final part geometry because wall thickness and glass-fibre content alter the thermal gradient.

In wall-mounted AC charging stations, FR-32 is used for internal insulating brackets, terminal covers, and front panel subassemblies where heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa must exceed 90 °C and comparative tracking index must be at least 300 V to manage creepage distances defined in IEC 61851-1. The material’s dielectric strength per IEC 60243-1 is reported as 25 kV/mm at 2.0 mm thickness; however, moulded-in contamination and moisture reduce this value, and final product testing is mandatory. Published data for outdoor UV exposure of this specific grade is limited, and UV-stabilized covers or coatings are used in service.

Compared with unreinforced general-purpose PC/ABS with a UL 94 HB classification, FR-32 sacrifices approximately 8–12% in notched impact strength and 5–10 °C in Vicat B50 temperature to achieve flame retardancy. Against brominated FR PC/ABS grades containing antimony trioxide, the phosphorus-based system in FR-32 lowers compound density by roughly 0.02–0.04 g/cm³ and reduces the risk of corrosive acid gas generation during overdrying, but it may exhibit slightly higher moisture uptake after saturation with water at 23 °C and 50% RH because of the polar flame-retardant additive. The comparative table below summarizes these differences using representative industrial ranges from supplier technical bulletins.

Conversion from a brominated FR PC/ABS to FR-32 requires purging the barrel, hot runner, and screw with a polycarbonate or high-stability PC/ABS purge compound because residual antimony trioxide can catalyse decomposition of the phosphorus package and produce black specks. Screw and barrel wear data from 40:1 L/D twin-screw compounding lines indicate that mildly acidic phosphorus decomposition products can accelerate nitriding-layer wear if melt temperatures exceed 280 °C for extended runs; therefore, bimetal barrels and hardened screws are preferred for high-volume production. These operational differences influence product cost and are not captured by datasheet comparisons alone.

Does FR-32 Generate Lower Plate-Out Than Brominated Grades?

Plate-out on mould surfaces in flame-retardant PC/ABS processing originates from low-molecular-weight flame-retardant degradation species, waxes, and polycarbonate oligomers that migrate to the cavity surface under low venting pressure. Brominated grades with antimony trioxide generate heavy white to grey deposits on vent pins and ejector sleeves, often requiring tool cleaning every 12–24 h in continuous production. Field reports from injection moulders processing FR-32 in polycarbonate-compatible hot-runner systems at 270 °C melt temperature describe thinner amber-to-brown deposits localized near vent grooves, with cleaning intervals extended to 48–72 h on tools with polished ventilation channels. This difference is attributed to the absence of antimony trioxide and the lower atomic mass of phosphorus decomposition products, but it does not eliminate the need for scheduled tool maintenance. Mould release agents based on metallic stearates should be avoided, as they react with the flame-retardant package and increase deposit formation.

Chemical resistance of FR-32 follows the performance envelope of PC/ABS: the material is attacked by methyl ethyl ketone, butyl acetate, and concentrated aromatic hydrocarbons, and stress cracking may occur when parts are exposed to esters or ketones while under high moulded-in stress. The supplier specifies that FR-32 should not be used in contact with amine-based epoxy hardeners or strong alkaline solutions at temperatures above 40 °C. For outdoor enclosures exposed to ultraviolet radiation, a UV-stabilized grade or a protective coating is required because the flame-retardant package and polybutadiene phase are susceptible to surface chalking and loss of impact after 1,000 h of accelerated weathering per ISO 4892-2:2013. In applications requiring direct food contact, FDA 21 CFR 177.1580 or EU 10/2011 compliance must be verified lot-by-lot; standard FR-32 is not marketed as a food-contact grade.

For power distribution applications, the comparative tracking index of 300 V under IEC 60112 meets many printed circuit board and terminal block requirements, but it is lower than some glass-filled polyphthalamide compounds; therefore, creepage distance calculations must not assume higher CTI values. Surface resistivity after conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH is reported as 10¹⁴ Ω per IEC 62631-3-2, and volume resistivity is 10¹⁵ Ω·cm; these values drop by up to one decade after 48 h at 40 °C and 93% RH, requiring conformal coating or sealed enclosures in humid service environments.

Compliance statements supplied by Dongguan Qiantai for FR-32 reference EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863, REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006 candidate list SVHC 0.1 wt% threshold, and halogen content below 900 ppm chlorine and 900 ppm bromine when tested per IEC 61249-2-21. The grade is not classified as hazardous under GHS; however, thermal decomposition products above 300 °C include carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, and trace phosphorus oxides, requiring local exhaust ventilation during compounding. The UL Yellow Card for this grade should be retrieved from the UL iQ database for current recognition status, as certification scope may be limited to specific colours and minimum thicknesses.
