Application of Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS 1

In automotive interior carrier applications, Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS 1 is introduced into the tool at a pre-compounded pellet moisture content below 0.02 wt% and then moulded in wall sections of 2.0–2.5 mm where low-visible-gloss retention is a primary acceptance criterion. The material is conveyed through a desiccant-bed hopper dryer at 85–95 °C for 3–4 h, with residual moisture verified by moisture analysis per ISO 15512:2019. Injection moulding of HVAC register brackets, lower dash insulator carriers, and cowl-side trim substrates proceeds on hydromechanical presses with clamp force from 1,600 to 3,200 kN, a nitrided or bimetallic barrel, and a general-purpose screw with compression ratio 2.2:1 to 2.5:1. The melt profile is staged from 250 °C rear zone to 280 °C nozzle, with a hot-runner manifold held at 260–270 °C and a mould wall temperature of 70–90 °C. Short-shot studies on an instrumented press show that a cushion of 4–6 mm and a hold-pressure transition at approximately 95 % of screw position provide the least sink-mark depth on back-side rib bosses. The blend is typically compounded on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with an L/D ratio of 40:1 to maintain dispersion of the PC/ABS phase morphology; compounding experience on a low-shear single-screw line with L/D 24:1 has shown poorer distribution of impact-modifying butadiene domains, producing notch sensitivity in finished moulded parts. The acceptance battery for interior brackets includes heat ageing per ISO 188 at 100 °C for 300 h, with colour shift controlled to ΔE ≤ 2.5 using CIELAB and tensile retention above 85 % of the as-moulded value. Low-temperature blunt impact is evaluated at −30 °C following ISO 6603-2, where ductile failure on the ribbed side of the carrier is preferred. Volatile outgassing is screened by VDA 277 with a typical target below 100 µg/g total carbon, because interior cabin air quality can deteriorate if residual process oils or thermal degradation products are not controlled. Published data for this specific Qiantai grade’s fogging index is limited; therefore, first-article validation for fogging per DIN 75201 A is advisable before serial production of passenger-vehicle interior parts. Warpage control on long, thin carrier profiles is managed by adjusting glass-fibre-free PC/ABS shrinkage to a nominal 0.5–0.7 % in flow direction and 0.6–0.8 % transverse, with the fixture cooling jig held for 30 s post-ejection to prevent dimensional recovery after the part passes through the ejector cycle. Deep ribs in under-dash air distribution housings and knee-bolster carrier plates may trap gas and induce weld lines that reduce ductility; therefore, cavity sensors and vacuum venting are used to maintain a clean melt front at the end of fill.

How Does Thin-Wall Flame Retardancy Interact with High-Gloss Surface Finish in Consumer Electronics Housings?

Consumer-electronics enclosure development pushes the material into a narrow processing corridor, because the wall thickness of an AC adaptor or Wi-Fi router shell is frequently 1.2–1.6 mm, and the melt must fill multi-gate cavities without visible flow-line front marks or floating flame-retardant exudate. A high-flow formulation in this class is evaluated by melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260 °C with a 5.0 kg load; values commonly sought for thin-wall housings fall between 18 and 30 cm³/10 min, depending on gate count and shear sensitivity. The barrel temperature profile on an electric toggle-clamp machine with 1,200–1,800 kN clamp force is held at 240–270 °C from feed throat to nozzle, and the mould surface temperature is controlled at 50–70 °C using a pressurised water unit. Fill speed is profiled with a minimum of 180 mm/s through the gate to prevent jetting on mirror-polished mould surfaces, followed by a lower packing speed that prevents gate blush at the tunnel gate. Gloss is measured at 60° per ISO 2813, with consumer-facing surfaces commonly specified above 85 gloss units for high-polish finishes or below 10 gloss units for tactile matte designs. Mould surface replication is strongly influenced by pre-drying because moisture above 0.03 wt% produces splay marks at thin-wall flow fronts. Flame classification is verified on end-use thicknesses according to UL 94; enclosures for ITE and audio/video equipment are frequently required to pass V-0 at 1.5 mm, with after-flame times below 10 s per single burn and total after-flame time below 50 s across five specimens. The terminal safety review under IEC 62368-1 uses the fire enclosure concept, so a housing resin that maintains V-0 performance at the minimum wall reduces the need for additional metal liners. The practical risk on a high-speed line is gas accumulation in deep snap-feature regions, which can be mitigated by vacuum venting at −0.08 to −0.09 MPa and by avoiding over-compression of the melt cushion to < 2 mm, a condition observed to produce localised burn marks and brown streaking. If the specific Qiantai PC/ABS 1 grade is to be used in direct skin-contact surfaces of consumer equipment, migration and odour testing under ISO 12219-9 or relevant OEM emission protocols should be added at design validation, as published data for this exact compound’s interior air emissions is not independently established.

For gamma-irradiated diagnostic monitor enclosures, the qualification logic differs from automotive trim because the polymer is exposed to low-dose sterilisation cycles, repeated quaternary ammonium disinfection, and long-term contact with conductive-coated shielding layers. The housing plastic is injection-moulded as a structural shell with 2.5–3.0 mm walls, then joined to a stainless-steel or aluminium internal frame, and the PC/ABS provides snap-fit and threaded boss strength without carrying conductivity requirements beyond the shielding gasket. Cytotoxicity is assessed on the finished housing per ISO 10993-5 using L929 fibroblast cell culture, with the sample prepared as a fluid extract at 37 °C for 24 h; a non-cytotoxic grade designation is generally established at the compound level, but the final device manufacturer retains responsibility for subcomponent-level certification. Irritation and sensitisation are evaluated by ISO 10993-10 where the enclosure is handled for long periods by clinical staff, though PC/ABS enclosures are rarely in prolonged direct patient contact. Disinfectant compatibility is screened by immersion tests at 23 °C using 70 % isopropyl alcohol, 0.5 % hydrogen peroxide, and a quaternary ammonium formulation per a modified ASTM D543 exposure regime; stress-crack resistance around threaded inserts and ultrasonic weld seams is documented by visual inspection at 10× magnification after 100 wipe cycles. Under ASTM D543 immersion, this grade class generally exhibits an operational boundary in which aliphatic solvents and high-pH amine-containing disinfectants can plasticise the polycarbonate phase, so enclosure design should avoid press-fit inserts and excessive moulded-in stress in regions that will be regularly wiped. Moulding for medical housing programmes is typically performed in an ISO Class 8 cleanroom with closed-loop material handling, oil-free vacuum loaders, and stainless-steel hopper contact surfaces to reduce particle contamination. Published data specific to Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS 1 under gamma sterilisation at 25 kGy is limited; therefore, colour shift after irradiation should be validated on a first-article basis using the final grade and colour masterbatch, because titanium dioxide and organic pigments may respond differently to ionising radiation. Terminal product examples include mobile ultrasound cart housings, EEG monitor enclosures, and diagnostic reader frames where the PC/ABS shell is painted or metallised only on external surface areas that do not carry load-bearing requirements.

Comparative Tracking Index and Low-Temperature Ductility in Distribution Cabinet Substrates

Distribution cabinets and EVSE covers are judged less by surface gloss than by tracking resistance, because the enclosure may sit in a dusty service panel with copper dust, mineral oil, and condensed moisture bridging live parts. The compound is evaluated for comparative tracking index under IEC 60112 using solution A, and the acceptance bandwidth for a flame-retarded PC/ABS of this general class typically spans 175–399 V, corresponding to PLC level 3 to 2 in UL component ratings depending on the flame-retardant package and filler content. Thick-section flame performance is confirmed by vertical burn tests per UL 94 at 3.0 mm; external cabinet components may also require glow-wire ignitability testing per IEC 60695-2-13 at 775 °C for 2.0 mm thickness and glow-wire flammability per IEC 60695-2-11 at 850 °C. The injection moulding of a large distribution cabinet cover uses a hot-runner multi-drop system and clamp force above 5,000 kN, with fill time typically limited to 3–5 s to avoid premature freeze-off in ribbed sections. Mould temperature is held at 70–85 °C to produce a stress-relieved surface layer that resists environmental stress cracking when mineral oil and copper dust accumulate on the insulating surface. Screw back-pressure is kept between 0.5 and 1.0 MPa to disperse additive packages without increasing melt residence time beyond 8 min; extrusion compounding is performed on a twin-screw line with L/D 44:1 and side-feeding of flame-retardant stabilisers to limit oil exudation at the die. Low-temperature ductility is not a universal requirement in this segment, but for outdoor cabinets in cold climates the notched Izod at −20 °C per ISO 180/1A may be specified above 10 kJ/m² to ensure that impact from maintenance tooling does not shatter the housing. Dimensional stability after conditioning at 85 °C/85 % RH for 168 h per ISO 6270-2 is often specified with length change controlled below 0.3 %. Terminal products include MCB distribution boxes, EVSE wallbox front covers, meter housings, and busbar mounting plates, where the absence of conductive carbon black and the use of a halogen-free flame-retardant system support recyclability under 2012/19/EU (WEEE).

When Drop-Impact Cycles Exceed Thirty Repetitions in Lithium-Ion Power Tool Housings

When a cordless drill housing is dropped repeatedly from 1.0 m onto a 40 mm concrete slab after battery-pack assembly, the acceptance path focuses on multi-axial energy absorption rather than thin-wall flame margin or sterilisation compatibility. Cordless drill and impact driver shells are commonly moulded from flame-retarded or non-flame-retarded PC/ABS with wall stock of 2.5–3.5 mm, using a 2,000–4,000 kN hydraulic press with gas-assisted or chemical foaming only on handle sections where sink marks over deep screw bosses are unacceptable. The notched Izod impact of this polymer class is evaluated per ISO 180/1A at 23 °C; typical acceptance for tool housings is above 25 kJ/m², while low-temperature specimens conditioned at −30 °C for 4 h before impact are often required to remain ductile rather than showing brittle hinge snaps. A repeated-drop protocol using a 1.0 m drop height is applied to tool bodies with a loaded battery pack; after 30 drops the housing must retain functional latch geometry and show no crack propagation exceeding 5 mm from stress concentrators. Published data for this specific Qiantai grade under the repeated-drop sequence is limited, so prototype evaluation should be performed with a quarter-round rib root radius above 0.5 mm and a corner radius above 1.0 mm to avoid premature cracking at split lines. Moulding temperature is controlled within ±5 °C of the recommended mid-range, because too low a melt temperature creates incomplete phase homogenisation at the weld line near the motor-mount boss, while too high a temperature accelerates butadiene thermal scission and forms black specks in light-coloured housings. Screw-boss pull-out strength is evaluated by tensile test using an M3 steel thread-forming screw with engagement length 6 mm; where specified, the target is a pull-out force above 800 N at a crosshead speed of 5 mm/min, with failure accompanied by boss expansion rather than shell fracture. Terminal products include Li-ion drill housings, angle grinder bodies, hot-air gun shells, and charger cradle frames, where overmoulded TPE grip seals are used because the low-polarity TPE does not mobilise the polycarbonate phase at the moulded interface.

Steam Condensate at 95°C Creates a Hydrolytic Aging Threshold for Internal Chassis Components

Internal chassis components in pump-driven espresso machines and hot-water dosing systems are exposed to saturated steam condensate, residual coffee acids, and cyclic heating that lower the practical upper service temperature of unfilled PC/ABS below the nominal heat deflection temperature. The material is processed into mounting plates, pump brackets, and flow-meter housings with wall thicknesses from 2.0 to 4.0 mm; the mould is kept at 80–95 °C to anneal the surface and reduce residual tensile stress that would accelerate hydrolytic attack at weld lines. Hydrolytic stability is screened by immersion in deionised water at 80 °C for 7 days per a modified ISO 175 regime, after which tensile strength retention of at least 80 % and visual absence of blisters or delamination are the common acceptance limits for this class. Vapour-phase exposure is more aggressive than liquid immersion, and published data for this specific Qiantai grade under continuous steam contact is limited; a first-article test at 95 °C steam for 500 h with 0.5 MPa pressure fluctuation is advisable for pump-mounted components. The heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa per ISO 75-2 is frequently measured in the range 95–110 °C for unfilled PC/ABS, but hydrolytically aged material can lose modulus before the HDT threshold is reached. Because the internal chassis is not a user-contact surface, flammability is less critical, but glow-wire testing under IEC 60335-1 for unattended appliances may still apply to separated live parts; a pass at 750 °C on the final chassis part is commonly used as an engineering benchmark. The moulded chassis is assembled with zinc-plated steel screws at 0.8–1.2 N·m to prevent stress cracking around the boss holes, and the screw boss outer diameter is specified at 2.0–2.5 times the screw diameter to maintain hoop strength after exposure to coffee oils. Terminal products include espresso machine internal frames, boiler mounting brackets, and water-pump housings where the PC/ABS grade replaces mineral-filled polypropylene when dimensional stability and creep resistance at elevated temperature are required.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Designated as Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS 1, the material is an unfilled thermoplastic alloy of polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene intended for injection moulding of enclosures, housings, brackets, and interior structural components. The model designation PC/ABS 1 identifies a first-series blend without flame-retardant, mineral, glass, or conductive filler packages; no public database entry provides grade-specific rheological, mechanical, or thermal curves, and published data for this specific configuration is limited. Properties described below therefore refer to the class of unfilled PC/ABS alloys unless a manufacturer lot-specific certificate of analysis is cited. Applications reported for this polymer class include consumer electronics housings, automotive interior trim carriers, appliance control panels, and power adapter shells where a balance of heat resistance, low-temperature impact retention, and flow in multi-cavity tools is required. The absence of a UL recognised component listing on a public database means that electrical enclosure applications require independent certification under IEC 60695-11-10:2021, and the grade should not be substituted into existing UL-listed designs without testing. Processors should also obtain lot-specific shrinkage data before cutting tool steel, because PC/ABS shrinkage is sensitive to filler content, part thickness, and mould temperature.

What drying and handling constraints govern this material before melt processing?

Moisture uptake in the polycarbonate phase occurs readily at ambient humidity; processing without a defined pre-drying step can produce surface splay, internal voids, and molecular weight degradation by hydrolysis at melt temperatures above 260 °C. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40 °C or lower is standard for PC/ABS alloys. Class-typical drying conditions are 80 °C for 4 h, with maximum moisture content before injection moulding limited to 0.02 % by weight according to ISO 15512:2019. Pellets exposed to RH > 60 % for more than 24 h should be dried for 6–8 h. Drying temperatures above 100 °C should be avoided because ABS domains can agglomerate or yellow; hopper residence time beyond 8 h at 80 °C does not improve processing after an equilibrium moisture plateau is reached. In central material handling systems, dried air return lines must be sized to maintain a pressure dew point below -30 °C at hopper inlet. If regrind is added, it must be dried under the same conditions and kept free of dust fines that can create splay and loss of weld-line strength.

Rheologically, unfilled PC/ABS 1 can be expected to exhibit shear-thinning behaviour, with melt volume-flow rate class-typically in the 10–25 cm³/10 min range when measured at 260 °C/5 kg in accordance with ISO 1133-1:2022. The polycarbonate phase contributes high viscosity and temperature sensitivity, while the ABS phase reduces melt elasticity and improves flow length in thin ribs. Screw recovery should be set to avoid excessive adiabatic heating; barrel residence time exceeding 8 min at the maximum processing temperature can darken the melt and reduce Charpy notched impact. A back pressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa is often sufficient to maintain melt homogeneity without generating shear heating that degrades the polycarbonate continuous phase. Screw speed for a 35 mm diameter screw is commonly 50–100 rpm, with higher speeds acceptable only if the melt temperature at the nozzle remains within the specified range and no black specks appear in purgings.

When Qiantai PC/ABS 1 Replaces General-Purpose ABS or Unmodified Polycarbonate in Existing Tools

When the alloy is substituted into a tool originally sized for general-purpose ABS, melt temperature typically must be raised from 220–240 °C to 260–280 °C and mould surface temperature from 40–60 °C to 70–90 °C. The higher melt temperature is necessary because the polycarbonate phase solidifies rapidly and can generate flow hesitation at gates smaller than 1.5 mm. Compared with ABS, the PC/ABS alloy improves heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa by approximately 20–35 °C and raises notched impact at -30 °C by a factor of two or more, but it reduces melt flow and requires more drying. When Qiantai PC/ABS 1 replaces unmodified polycarbonate, the alloy lowers melt processing temperature by 20–40 °C, improves flow length/wall-thickness ratio in thin-walled parts, and reduces notched impact at thick sections; tensile modulus and Vicat softening temperature are below those of polycarbonate. Against mineral-filled PC/ABS or PC+ABS-TD grades, unfilled PC/ABS 1 has lower tensile modulus and lower density, but higher elongation at break and better surface appearance; mineral additions are used where warpage control and modulus exceed impact demands. Against PC/PBT blends, PC/ABS 1 typically shows higher notched impact at low temperature and lower chemical resistance to automotive fuels, oils, and alkaline cleaning fluids. These relative differences are drawn from published class-level comparisons and should not be read as grade-specific values for Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS 1 without confirmation.

Compared to standard ABS, PC/ABS alloys also have a higher density and require mould temperatures high enough to develop surface gloss; low mould temperatures below 50 °C produce a matte, stress-whitened skin and reduce impact. Compared to polycarbonate, PC/ABS has lower transparency and is unsuitable for optical applications. If UV stability is required, an ASA or UV-stabilised PC/ABS grade should be selected, because the butadiene domain in ABS is vulnerable to photo-oxidative embrittlement unless a light stabiliser package is specified.

Mechanical property envelope, test methods, and class-typical values

Published mechanical data for unfilled PC/ABS alloys indicate a density of 1.12–1.16 g/cm³ when tested to ISO 1183-1:2019. Tensile stress at yield, determined on ISO 527-2:2012 type 1A specimens at 50 mm/min, generally falls within 50–60 MPa; tensile modulus ranges from 2200–2600 MPa. Charpy notched impact at 23 °C, determined to ISO 179-1:2023 using type 1 edgewise specimens, typically spans 35–60 kJ/m². At -30 °C, impact retention decreases to 10–20 kJ/m², reflecting the ductile-to-brittle transition of the ABS-rich domains. Flexural modulus, measured to ISO 178:2019, is commonly 2100–2500 MPa. Mould shrinkage, measured according to ISO 294-4:2018 after 24 h, is typically 0.5–0.7 % in flow direction and 0.6–0.8 % transverse. These ranges describe the unfilled PC/ABS class, not a specific lot of Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS 1; the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis must be used for production release.

Post-mould shrinkage of unfilled PC/ABS 1 is anisotropic. For a 2.5 mm plaque, a 10 °C increase in mould surface temperature can raise transverse shrinkage by 0.05–0.10 %. Annealing at 80 °C for 2 h reduces residual stress but may increase dimensions slightly. For parts with precise bearing fits, a dimensional stability study over 48 h post-moulding is recommended because PC/ABS continues to densify after demoulding.

Knit-line strength retention in PC/ABS alloys is governed by melt-front temperature and mould venting. On direct-clamp machines with 80–120 tonnes clamping force for multi-cavity electronics housings, pressure loss across a 1.2 mm-thick flow path can reduce weld-line elongation by 30–50 % relative to un-welded sections. Gate position should be moved away from visible surfaces or high-stress bosses; if weld lines are unavoidable, mould surface temperature should be raised to the upper 90 °C limit and injection velocity increased to shorten melt-front cooling. Vent depths should not exceed 0.02–0.03 mm to prevent flash while allowing gas escape from ABS degradation products. In multi-gate tools, sequential valve-gate control can shift weld lines to low-stress regions, but it requires hot-runner manifold temperatures of 270–290 °C and independent tip control.

Setting injection moulding parameters while avoiding residence-time faults

On reciprocating-screw injection moulding machines, barrel profiles for unfilled PC/ABS 1 are commonly set from rear to nozzle as 240–260–270–280 °C, with hot runner manifolds held at 270–290 °C if valve gates are used. Mould temperature control units operating with water up to 90 °C or oil up to 110 °C may be required for high polish surfaces. Injection velocity should be profiled to fill 90–95 % of cavity volume before transfer to packing pressure at 60–80 MPa hydraulic or 30–50 MPa cavity-specific. Screw cushion must be stable at 3–6 mm; variations above 2 mm indicate check-ring leakage or trapped gas. Clamp force required for a single-cavity tool is estimated by projected area multiplied by cavity pressure; a 300 cm² projected area component typically requires 100–120 tonnes at 35–40 MPa cavity pressure. If the tool contains long thin ribs below 0.8 mm thickness, flow simulation should be used to verify pressure drop before mould construction, because the polycarbonate phase increases solidification rate and melt pressure demand.

Before processing, a purging compound with a processing window above 260 °C is used to clean barrel residues from prior materials. Residual polyoxymethylene or flame-retardant concentrates can generate acid gases that degrade polycarbonate; thorough purging with a PC/ABS-compatible purge is required. On production lines, moisture-derived splay appears as V-shaped or fan-shaped silvery streaks at gate areas when pellet moisture content exceeds 0.03 %; this is often misdiagnosed as gas entrapment, but drying and nozzle temperature reduction generally resolve the defect. Jetting in large flat parts occurs when injection velocity is too high and melt strand collides with cavity wall before forming a uniform flow front; correction involves reducing initial injection speed, enlarging gate land, or repositioning the gate.

Regulatory classification is not automatically transferred from the polymer class

Regulatory classification of Dongguan Qiantai PC/ABS 1 depends on lot-specific formulations, and no public compliance certificate should be assumed. The unfilled PC/ABS class is generally formulated to meet RoHS 2 Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by Commission Delegated Directive (EU) 2015/863 for restricted phthalates. REACH obligations under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 require confirmation of SVHC content above 0.1 % w/w from the supplier. Flammability classification of unfilled PC/ABS is typically HB according to UL 94; V-0, V-1, and 5VA ratings require flame-retardant packages that are not implied by the PC/ABS 1 designation. For applications in contact with food or potable water, specific migration testing under EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 177.1580 for polycarbonate is required; ABS components may not satisfy all food-contact requirements, so the grade must not be used in such applications without explicit manufacturer certification. Chemical exposure should exclude strong alkalis, aromatic solvents, ketones, esters, and hot water above 60 °C under continuous stress, because polycarbonate domains undergo environmental stress cracking and hydrolysis. Regrind usage up to 20 wt% is class-typical when dried and free of contamination; higher regrind fractions reduce impact and increase lot-to-lot variability.
