Application of Dongguan Qiantai ABS A06

In automotive interior injection moulding, Dongguan Qiantai ABS A06 is formulated as the base terpolymer at 100 phr with a carbon black masterbatch at 2–4 wt% of the compound, a phenolic antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 phr, and a dispersing mould release agent at 0.2–0.5 phr. Compliance verification for moulded pillar covers and door panel inserts is conducted against FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795:1989 for horizontal burn rate, VDA 278:2016-07 for VOC and SVOC emission, ELV Directive 2000/53/EC Annex II for heavy metals, and REACH Annex XVII restricted substances. Melt volume-flow rate for incoming lots is verified against ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg; variation beyond the producer’s nominal ±15% should prompt re-validation of switch-over position and hold pressure. Before moulding, pellets are dried in a desiccant dryer with air dew point at or below -40 °C at 80 °C for 3–4 h, reducing moisture below 0.05% to prevent splay on polished tool surfaces. Injection moulding is performed on 300–800 t clamp force machines with hot-runner valve gates; melt temperature is maintained at 230–250 °C and tool surface temperature between 50–70 °C. The screw should hold a melt cushion of 3–5 mm, with injection speed profiled from 60–100 mm/s through the gate to 20–40 mm/s at cavity fill, followed by hold pressure of 600–900 bar hydraulic for 4–6 s. A critical process conflict is the narrow matte-gloss transition: if tool temperature drops below 45 °C, jetting and visible flow lines form near bosses; above 75 °C, cycle time extends and ejection scratches can appear. Production-scale observations show batch-to-batch variation in pellet moisture is the primary source of splay defects, particularly when silo storage humidity exceeds 60% RH; in such conditions pre-drying should be extended to 5 h. Finished parts include A-, B-, and C-pillar covers, door panel inserts, quarter trim panels, and centre console side covers.

What Moulding Adjustments Suppress Jetting and Weld-Line Visibility in ABS A06 Vacuum Cleaner Housings?

Vacuum cleaner housings moulded from ABS A06 typically employ a formulation of 100 phr resin, 2–4 wt% colour masterbatch, and 0.2–0.4 phr processing stabiliser. The production process uses multi-zone injection moulding machines with clamp force 150–450 t; melt temperature is kept at 225–245 °C, mould temperature at 35–50 °C. Gate location is selected behind handle bosses to avoid jetting; when direct edge gates are unavoidable, a short first-stage injection speed of 15–25 mm/s for the first 5–8 mm of flow path prevents snake-like jetting and visible splay. Weld-line depth is minimised by maintaining melt temperature at the upper end of the range and by positioning vents at the knitted flow front; higher mould temperature reduces weld-line notch sensitivity. The housing is evaluated against IEC 60335-1:2020 together with IEC 60335-2-2:2019 for motor-operated vacuum cleaners, UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm thickness, and RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II. The formulation is not suitable for direct continuous contact with heater plates above 85 °C; internal metal thermal shields are required. Finished products include canister vacuum housings, cordless stick-vacuum powerhead shells, floor-nozzle bodies, and motor cover shrouds.

Flame-Retardant ABS A06 Compounds for Information Technology Equipment Enclosures

Compounding of flame-retardant enclosure grades from ABS A06 requires distribution of a brominated epoxy oligomer at 15–22 wt% and antimony trioxide at 4–7 wt%, with PTFE anti-drip additive at 0.2–0.5 wt%, antioxidant at 0.2–0.4 wt%, and ABS A06 constituting 70–80 wt% of the compound. Twin-screw compounding is executed on a co-rotating extruder with L/D 40:1, side feeder at zone 5, barrel temperatures from 170 °C to 210 °C, die temperature 220 °C, screw speed 350–500 rpm, and output controlled to maintain melt temperature below 240 °C because ABS A06 begins thermo-oxidative degradation and brown discolouration above that threshold. Pellets are dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h; flame-retardant powders are fed through a loss-in-weight gravimetric feeder to reduce batch-to-batch variance. A narrow processing window exists between flame retardant decomposition and ABS melt flow: if melt temperature exceeds 245 °C, liberated bromine radicals accelerate chain scission and reduce Izod notched impact strength; if below 200 °C, additive dispersion remains poor and UL 94 V-0 afterburn times rise. Moulded parts include IP router housings, optical network terminal enclosures, set-top box chassis, and power strip shells.

When ABS A06 Replaces PVC in DWV Pipe Fittings and Drainage Components

DWV fitting producers replacing PVC with ABS A06 encounter a shift in cycle-to-cycle shrinkage because ABS exhibits a wider melt compressibility and slower gate seal under low-pressure packing. A typical DWV fitting formulation consists of ABS A06 at 100 phr, titanium dioxide at 2–5 phr, acrylic processing aid at 0.5–1.0 phr, and antioxidant at 0.1–0.3 phr. Fittings are injection moulded on machines with clamp force 250–600 t, melt temperature 200–230 °C, mould temperature 40–60 °C; pipe extrusion uses a single-screw extruder with L/D 24:1 and melt temperature 195–215 °C. Screw speed is set to maintain pressure below 200 bar, because high shear reduces impact strength at pipe wall thickness 2.0–4.0 mm. Products are assessed under ISO 15493:2003 for ABS soil and waste discharge systems, ASTM D2661-21 for DWV pipe and fittings, and EN 1455-1:1999 for ABS piping systems for soil and waste discharge. The application is non-pressure; continuous service temperature should not exceed 60 °C with short-term spikes to 80 °C per service classes in ISO 15493:2003. Finished articles include 32–100 mm elbows, tees, p-traps, pipe couplings, and vent connectors.

Gate freeze-off, not timer control, determines holding pressure in toy-grade ABS A06 cavities

For high-volume construction toy moulding, ABS A06 performs as the base terpolymer in a plasticiser-free formulation of 100 phr resin, 0.5–3 wt% colour masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 phr UV stabiliser. Injection moulding uses high-speed machines with clamp force 80–250 t, melt temperature 220–245 °C, mould temperature 30–50 °C, and holding pressure 700–1000 bar until gate freeze; freeze time is confirmed by cavity pressure decay rather than timer, preventing underpacking in thick bosses. Post-moulding annealing is not recommended above 85 °C because dimensional distortion exceeds 0.5% in parts with wall thickness 1.2–2.5 mm. Toy components are tested under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of certain elements, ASTM F963-23 for heavy metals and mechanical hazards, and REACH Annex XVII phthalate restrictions. Finished parts include interlocking blocks, gear wheels, wheel hubs, connector pegs, and track joining clips.

Edge-band extrusion lines running ABS A06 at thickness 0.8–2.0 mm compound the terpolymer at 100 phr with acrylic processing aid at 1–2 phr, TiO2 or colour masterbatch at 2–4 wt%, UV stabiliser at 0.3–0.8 phr, and antistatic additive at 0.1–0.3 phr. The production sequence uses a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1, flat sheet die, three-roll polishing stack at roll temperatures 70–90 °C, in-line slitting, and embossing. Melt temperature is controlled at 210–230 °C; die lip gap is adjusted to 0.5–0.8 mm for a 1.0 mm finished band to control edge bead thickness. Furniture edge banding is evaluated under DIN 68861-1:2020-05 for chemical resistance, DIN 68861-2:2020-05 for abrasion resistance, and RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II. Published data for heat-bend radii below 5 mm in this specific configuration is limited; trial validation on the target edge bander is required. Finished products include cabinet edge banding tapes, drawer front profiles, worktop edging strips, and decorative profiles.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Qiantai ABS A06 is introduced as a general-purpose injection-moulding grade within the manufacturer’s ABS A series. The model suffix A06 denotes a controlled-viscosity acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resin intended for solid-wall structural components. Exact certified values must be taken from the current supplier datasheet; where this document does not reproduce those values, the ranges presented below are representative of the general-purpose ABS viscosity class and should not be used for lot release testing without supplier confirmation.

Specification parameters commonly controlled for the grade include melt volume-flow rate, density, tensile yield stress, notched impact strength, Vicat softening temperature, and mould shrinkage. The resin is supplied as cylindrical pellet stock suitable for volumetric or gravimetric feed. Pre-coloured variants may use pigment systems that alter flow length by up to 5% relative to natural resin; process adjustments are therefore required when colour packages are changed.

What drying and plasticising parameters govern injection moulding of ABS A06?

Pre-drying is mandatory when storage humidity exceeds 60% RH or when cartons are exposed for more than 8 h. A desiccant bed dryer with a dew point of -30 °C or lower is preferred. The pellet bed is dried at 80–85 °C for 3–4 h; residual moisture is maintained below 0.05% as measured by ISO 15512 Method A. At moisture levels above 0.08%, surface splay and tensile yield loss of 8–12% have been observed on a 600 kN injection-moulding machine with a 21:1 L/D general-purpose screw.

Melt temperature measured at the nozzle is held between 220 °C and 250 °C. A barrel profile from the feed throat to nozzle is normally 180–200 °C, 210–230 °C, 230–245 °C, and 225–245 °C. Mold wall temperature is set at 40–70 °C; lower values reduce cycle time but decrease surface replication on textured cavities. Peak injection pressure at the barrel is typically 80–120 MPa. Switchover is set at a screw position corresponding to 95–98% cavity fill. Packing pressure is maintained at 50–70% of peak injection pressure for 3–6 s, followed by a short hold of 2 s at 20–30% of peak pressure. Back pressure is limited to 0.5–1.0 MPa hydraulic pressure, with screw rotation speed between 40–80 rpm.

On a production run carried out on a 1,200 kN toggle-clamp press with a 22:1 L/D three-zone screw, shot weight variation was controlled within 0.3% when the cushion was held at 2–4 mm. Increasing cushion above 6 mm produced nozzle drool and inconsistent screw torque. A decompression distance of 2–4 mm before screw rest reduced stringing without introducing air burns into the melt stream.

Nominal Physical Property Envelope and Shrinkage Coefficients for ABS A06

The following table summarises typical values for the general-purpose ABS class represented by A06. Values are not lot-release specifications unless stated on the supplier certificate of analysis.

    Mould shrinkage, flow directionISO 294-40.45–0.55%
    Mould shrinkage, transverse directionISO 294-40.55–0.70%

Mould shrinkage is anisotropic. On a plaque mould with dimensions of 120 mm × 120 mm × 3 mm per ISO 294-4, flow-direction shrinkage is typically 0.45–0.55% and transverse-direction shrinkage is 0.55–0.70%. Gate size, packing pressure, and wall thickness alter these values substantially. For parts with wall sections below 2.5 mm, a lower packing intensity may reduce sink marks but increase transverse shrinkage by an additional 0.1–0.2%.

In production-scale evaluation on a 1,200 kN toggle-clamp machine with a valve-gate hot runner, the measured tensile yield stress of moulded specimens remained within 42–46 MPa after drying was held below 0.05% moisture. When regrind content was increased to 30%, notched impact at 23 °C decreased by approximately 10–15% compared with virgin material, but tensile yield changed by less than 3%. Processors using regrind must therefore re-validate impact-dependent applications rather than assume linear additive behaviour.

When ABS A06 Is Substituted for High-Flow ABS in Thin-Wall Housings

ABS A06 is not intended for nominal wall sections below 2.0 mm. Compared with a high-flow ABS grade having a melt volume-flow rate of 35–45 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1 at 220 °C / 10 kg, A06 exhibits lower spiral-flow length under identical injection conditions. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; however, processors should anticipate a flow-length reduction of approximately 15–25% relative to high-flow ABS when using a 10 MPa hydraulic injection pressure and a 60 °C mold wall. The lower flow-front velocity can produce short shots in ribs with a thickness below 0.8 mm unless gate locations are moved and melt temperature is raised to 245–250 °C.

In thicker wall sections, the advantage of A06 is higher notched impact retention. Parts moulded at 2.8 mm wall thickness and tested per ISO 179-1/1eA show a typical increase of 20–30% in Charpy notched impact energy compared with the same test on high-flow ABS having a melt flow rate above 30 cm³/10 min. This difference is attributed to reduced melt-phase orientation of the butadiene phase near the gate and lower shear-induced skin orientation.

When replacing high-flow ABS in existing tools, the hold-pressure profile must be lengthened. Cavity-pressure measurements on a 3 mm instrumented plaque mould have shown that gate freeze time is reached 0.5–1.5 s later than a high-flow ABS under the same mold temperature. A packing pressure of 50–70% of peak injection pressure for 3–6 s, followed by a short hold of 2 s at 20–30% of peak pressure, is therefore used to maintain dimensional stability.

Comparative positioning against heat-resistant and plating-grade ABS resins is summarised below. The data are drawn from general-purpose, heat-resistant, and plating-grade ABS class behaviour, not from a single multi-lot study of A06.

Property positioning of Dongguan Qiantai ABS A06 relative to common ABS sub-classes
    ABS sub-classMelt volume-flow rate at 220 °C / 10 kgCharpy notched impact at 23 °CHeat deflection temperature at 0.45 MPaTypical application boundary
Dongguan Qiantai ABS A0616–24 cm³/10 min14–22 kJ/m²90–96 °CSolid-wall electronic and appliance enclosures with moderate flow requirements
    High-flow ABS30–45 cm³/10 min10–16 kJ/m²86–92 °CThin-wall housings below 2.0 mm
    Heat-resistant ABS8–15 cm³/10 min12–18 kJ/m²100–110 °CAutomotive interior upper parts and near-heat sources
    Plating-grade ABS20–30 cm³/10 min15–25 kJ/m²88–94 °CElectroplated decorative parts requiring chromic etch uniformity

From this positioning, A06 differs from high-flow grades by lower melt fluidity and higher retained impact in thicker sections. It differs from heat-resistant ABS by lower Vicat and HDT values but better melt processability. It differs from plating-grade ABS in surface etch response; A06 is not claimed as a controlled-butadiene-dispersion grade for electrolytic plating adhesion unless the supplier has pre-qualified the specific surface treatment line.

Chemical resistance limitations are defined by stress-cracking thresholds, not simple solubility data.

Environmental stress-cracking resistance of ABS A06 follows the general behaviour of emulsion and bulk ABS. Under constant strain per ISO 22088-3, contact with aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents produces rapid cracking at external strains above 0.3–0.5%. Isopropyl alcohol wipes used on moulded enclosures should be limited to 70% aqueous solutions, and the surface should not be exposed to evaporative cooling at edges or weld lines. Solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, and trichloroethylene must be avoided during cleaning or adhesive bonding.

Oxidative thermal aging in air is governed by the heat-stabiliser package. Continuous service above 75–85 °C for unstabilised general-purpose ABS can lead to surface yellowing and impact loss, as measured by accelerated aging at 100 °C for 500 h per ISO 2578. For under-hood or high-temperature applications, a heat-resistant ABS or ASA blend should be specified instead of A06.

Regulatory compliance must be confirmed against the current supplier certification. Typical data requirements include REACH registration for substances of very high concern, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU annex II restricted substances, and food-contact evaluation under FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 when applicable. Published data for the specific A06 formulation is limited for food-contact and medical-use configurations; those applications require separate supplier confirmation and migration testing on the finished part.
