Application of Dongguan Qiantai ABS 990

Application mapping for Dongguan Qiantai ABS 990 includes injection moulding, sheet extrusion, thermoforming, profile extrusion, and filament extrusion. The grade is classified as an ABS moulding and extrusion material under ISO 2580-1 and ASTM D4673. All scenarios assume a residual moisture content below 0.05 wt% immediately before melt processing. Lot-specific melt flow rate, notched Izod impact, and Vicat softening temperature are documented in the certificate of analysis; the values below are process boundaries common to ABS injection and extrusion grades, not lot-certified product properties.

Interior Trim Components and Post-Moulding Dimensional Stability

In automotive interiors, Dongguan Qiantai ABS 990 is processed as the neat polymer or as the ABS-rich phase in a masterbatch-adjusted compound. The material is specified for grained surfaces, resistance to common interior cleaning agents, and predictable post-moulding shrinkage across grained and ungrained regions. Compliance for occupied-compartment parts is anchored to FMVSS 302 horizontal flammability as implemented by ISO 3795, with VOC and odour thresholds evaluated under VDA 278 and VDA 270 where the OEM programme requires. The base polymer is used at 100 parts by mass; colour masterbatch is added at 2–4 wt%, carbon black masterbatch at 0.5–1.5 wt%, and a UV stabiliser concentrate at 0.5–1.0 wt% for indirect sun-exposed positions. Regrind is restricted to 10–15 wt% on visible Class A grain surfaces and may rise to 25 wt% for hidden clip bases, provided the melt flow rate of the regrind fraction does not deviate by more than 10% from virgin pellet under ISO 1133-1:2022. The processing route is injection moulding with desiccant drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h, a melt temperature of 230–250 °C, and tool temperature of 40–60 °C. Holding pressure in the cavity is typically 60–80 MPa; injection speed is set to fill thick-to-thin sections without jetting. Dimensional acceptance includes post-moulding shrinkage in the flow direction of 0.4–0.7% and transverse shrinkage of 0.3–0.6%, though published data for this specific lot is limited and must be confirmed by a mould trial. Finished component types include door panel inserts, centre console trim rings, pillar covers, seat side covers, HVAC vent louvres, and glove box surrounds.

Why Does Glow-Wire Endurance Shift When Regrind Content Exceeds 15%?

Glow-wire performance in unfilled ABS housings is influenced less by polymer melting temperature than by regrind content and moulded-in stress. Dongguan Qiantai ABS 990 without flame-retardant modification is generally classified as UL 94 HB. Finished part compliance for unattended equipment is assessed by IEC 62368-1 and glow-wire testing to IEC 60695-2-12 at 650 °C or 850 °C depending on current-carrying separation. In the compounding recipe, ABS 990 is dosed at 100 parts by mass with colour masterbatch at 2–4 wt%, antistatic masterbatch at 1–3 wt%, and clean sprue-runner regrind held at 10–15 wt%. If the application demands UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, the base resin requires conversion into a flame-retardant compound; phosphorus-nitrogen FR packages for ABS are typically evaluated in the 20–28 wt% total additive range, but published data for this specific configuration is limited and bench-scale compounding is mandatory. The moulding route uses desiccant drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h, melt temperatures of 210–240 °C, and tool temperatures of 50–70 °C. The screw should recover with minimal backpressure to avoid exposure of the nitrile group to temperatures above 240 °C for more than 5 min. End products are router enclosures, set-top box housings, socket boxes, switch faceplates, and power adapter shells.

A process conflict emerges when the moulder attempts to recover sprues and runners at the same proportion as unfilled polypropylene. ABS embrittlement after repeated melt cycles is driven by oxidative crosslinking of the butadiene phase, which raises melt viscosity and reduces notched Izod impact. For ABS 990, the regrind fraction should be limited by the ratio of virgin to regrind that keeps the melt flow rate shift within 10% under ISO 1133-1:2022. The use of hot-runner systems with a residence time above 5 min at 240 °C may produce black specks and odour in light-coloured enclosures. Therefore, hot-runner manifold temperatures should be set 10–20 °C below the nozzle set point, and the circuit should be purged after any line stoppage longer than 3 min. Glow-wire failure at 650 °C in side walls often originates from knit lines at bosses and inserts rather than from the bulk polymer; the solution is to move the gate away from high-stress contact areas and to use an injection profile that holds the flow front above 100 MPa during the transition from velocity control to pressure control.

In appliance manufacturing, the dominant constraints are dimensional stability after long-term heating and impact resistance at door corners and snap-fit bosses. Dongguan Qiantai ABS 990 is used in control panel substrates and body cladding where the material must pass a ball-pressure or glow-wire test after moulded stress relaxation. Compliance is tied to IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 30.2 for glow-wire endurance in unattended appliances and UL 746B for long-term thermal ageing. The relative thermal index of unfilled ABS is commonly reported in the 60–80 °C range, but grade-specific published data should be obtained. The recipe uses 100 parts by mass of ABS 990, white masterbatch at 3–5 wt%, silicone lubricant masterbatch at 0.5–1.0 wt%, and regrind at 15–20 wt%. The production process is injection moulding with a melt temperature of 220–250 °C, a mould temperature of 50–70 °C, and a clamp force of 0.4–0.6 t/cm² of projected area. Sequential valve gating is used where knit lines form at thin-walled grille sections. End products include washing machine control panel trim, refrigerator door cap strips, vacuum cleaner housing shells, air purifier bases, and electric kettle jug body panels.

When Thermoformed Luggage Shells Must Retain Low Gloss and Cold-Drop Integrity

Thermoformed luggage shells produced from Dongguan Qiantai ABS 990 are specified when the formed part must retain a low-gloss grain and survive cold-drop loading without cracking at corner radii. Sheet extrusion is the first conversion step, followed by plug-assisted thermoforming. Compliance for EU distribution is documented under REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU; transportation- or luggage-specific mechanical performance is evaluated by buyer-defined drop and corner-impact protocols because no single harmonised EN standard covers all luggage categories. The recipe is compounded at 100 parts by mass of ABS 990, methacrylate-butadiene-styrene impact modifier at 5–15 wt%, carbon black masterbatch at 0.8–2.0 wt%, and a UV stabiliser package at 0.3–0.8 wt%. Skeletal trim from thermoformed sheet may be re-introduced at 20–30 wt%, but each re-extrusion pass reduces notched Izod impact as measured by ISO 180. For sheet extrusion, the barrel temperatures are maintained at 200–230 °C, the roll-stack surface temperature is 70–90 °C, and the roll gap is set to produce sheet at 1.5–4.0 mm. Thermoforming is carried out at sheet surface temperatures of 160–190 °C with aluminium mould coolant held at 50–60 °C. Terminal types include hard-shell suitcases, equipment cases, portable instrument housings, and protective transit covers for medical devices.

A known process conflict in luggage shell production is the trade-off between sheet surface gloss and low-temperature impact retention. Lower roll-stack temperatures increase gloss but raise frozen-in stress at the sheet surface, which later propagates from deep draw corners during cold-drop. Conversely, higher roll-stack temperatures reduce stress but introduce stickiness and grain wash-out. The process window for sheet produced from ABS 990 is therefore held with a roll-surface-to-melt temperature differential of 140–160 °C. Plug assist speed is adjusted to avoid chilling the sheet below 160 °C before final draw. Insertion of a pre-stretch step reduces wall thinning below 40% of initial sheet thickness at the wheel-box corners. If the formed part is to be painted, a surface tension treatment is usually unnecessary after processing if the sheet is kept free of silicone mould release.

Furniture edge banding converts ABS 990 into slit-web or roll form where bending radius performance and edge adhesion are the critical acceptance criteria. The material is selected because it can be pigmented to match wood grain decor and embossed with a surface texture that resists cleaning fluids in office and kitchen environments. The applicable chemical safety framework is REACH (EC) No 1907/2006; for edge banding used on children's furniture, migration of certain elements is evaluated under EN 71-3. The formulation is 100 parts by mass ABS 990, colour masterbatch at 2–4 wt%, impact modifier at 3–8 wt% for radius bending without stress whitening, and processing aid at 0.3–0.8 wt%. Profile or slit-sheet extrusion is performed on a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1, a melt temperature of 200–230 °C, and a die gap of 0.8–2.5 mm. The extruded web is embossed on a grained casting roll at 80–100 °C, cooled, and slit into rolls. Finished forms include edge banding rolls for cabinet doors, office desk trim, drawer edge protectors, and kickplate edging strips.

Fused Filament Fabrication Feedstock and the Diameter Drift Problem

Filament extrusion from ABS 990 pellets is a lower-temperature alternative to polycarbonate and polyamide in fused filament fabrication tooling. The dominant quality risk is not thermal degradation but ovality and diameter drift caused by melt viscosity variation. Compliance under EU chemical safety is obtained via REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU; additive manufacturing terminology is defined under ISO/ASTM 52900. The extrusion recipe uses 100 parts by mass of ABS 990, colour masterbatch at 2–4 wt%, a process stabiliser masterbatch at 0.5–2 wt%, and re-ground spool scrap at 10–15 wt%. Pellets are dried at 80 °C for 2–4 h before extrusion. The line consists of a single-screw extruder with L/D 28:1, a melt filter pack using 80–120 mesh screens, a die of 1.75 mm or 2.85 mm, and a water bath held at 35–45 °C. Dual-axis laser or contact diameter gauges control diameter to ±0.03 mm for 1.75 mm filament and ±0.05 mm for 2.85 mm filament. Melt temperature at the die is 210–230 °C. Finished goods are 1.75 mm and 2.85 mm ABS filament spools for fused filament fabrication of assembly jigs, fixture bodies, concept models, and vacuum forming formers.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Qiantai ABS 990 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade supplied in pellet form. The supplier is based in Dongguan, China, and distributes the product as an unfilled, opaque ABS resin for rigid consumer and industrial components. The numeric suffix 990 is a manufacturer-specific product code and does not correspond to a public ISO 19065-1 designation. The grade is positioned in the medium-flow ABS class; typical unfilled density lies between 1.04 g/cm³ and 1.06 g/cm³ when measured to ISO 1183-1:2019. Because ABS is mildly hygroscopic, storage should be in sealed moisture-barrier packaging below 60% RH. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80°C for 2–4 h is the usual starting condition to reduce surface moisture below 0.05 wt%; verification can be performed by ASTM D6980-17. Certificates of analysis are required for exact batch-specific melt flow rate, impact strength, and heat resistance because rubber particle size distribution and styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer molecular mass are adjusted within the manufacturer’s specification window. Processors treating ABS 990 as a generic ABS without drying or temperature control may observe splay, brown streaks from polybutadiene thermal degradation, and inconsistent Charpy impact values.

    Thermomechanical Benchmarks and Test-Method Dependencies

For comparative evaluation, ABS 990 class materials are generally tested under ISO conditions rather than ASTM alone. A medium-flow general-purpose ABS typically exhibits a melt volume-flow rate from 15 cm³/10 min to 30 cm³/10 min at 220°C with a 10 kg piston load, according to ISO 1133-1:2022. That flow range supports filling of nominal wall sections from 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm in multicavity tools; thinner sections below 1.0 mm may require higher melt temperatures and higher injection velocity. Tensile yield stress for comparable grades measured on Type 1A specimens under ISO 527-2:2012 at 50 mm/min commonly falls between 40 MPa and 48 MPa. Tensile modulus ranges from 2,200 MPa to 2,600 MPa. Flexural modulus under ISO 178:2019 at 2 mm/min is often reported from 2,000 MPa to 2,400 MPa. Notched Charpy impact at 23°C measured by ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 generally falls between 15 kJ/m² and 25 kJ/m², but the value at -30°C may drop to 7–12 kJ/m², which is a critical consideration for cold-impact applications. Vicat softening temperature by ISO 306:2022 Method B50 is typically 95–100°C, while heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa by ISO 75-2:2013 Method A ranges from 85°C to 95°C. These are not absolute product guarantees; they are indicative ranges for unfilled general-purpose ABS resins of this flow class. UL 94 flammability classification for non-flame-retardant ABS is usually HB at 1.5 mm or 3.0 mm under IEC 60695-11-10.

At 220°C, apparent shear viscosity of medium-flow ABS can fall below 1,000 Pa·s at 100 s−1 with pronounced shear-thinning behaviour. The exact viscosity curve for ABS 990 should be generated on a capillary rheometer according to ISO 11443:2021 when gate shear exceeds 50,000 s−1. On multi-cavity hot-runner moulds with eight or more drops, melt-flow imbalance can cause short shots if the MVR falls below 15 cm³/10 min; this is a known production bottleneck in high-cavitation tooling.

    Property Method Indicative range Unit
    Density ISO 1183-1:2019 1.04–1.06 g/cm³
    Melt volume-flow rate, 220°C/10 kg ISO 1133-1:2022 15–30 cm³/10 min
Tensile yield stress ISO 527-2:2012 40–48 MPa
Tensile modulus ISO 527-2:2012 2,200–2,600 MPa
Flexural modulus ISO 178:2019 2,000–2,400 MPa
    Charpy notched impact, 23°C ISO 179-1/1eA:2010 15–25 kJ/m²
    Vicat softening temperature, B50 ISO 306:2022 95–100 °C
    Heat deflection temperature, 1.8 MPa ISO 75-2:2013 85–95 °C

In injection moulding operations, the melt temperature window for ABS 990 class materials is generally set between 210°C and 240°C, with the rear zone kept near 190–210°C and the nozzle between 230°C and 240°C. Mold temperature control is preferably maintained at 40°C to 70°C. Lower mould temperatures reduce cycle time but can produce visible weld lines and gloss variation in textured cavities; higher mould temperatures improve knit-line strength but extend cooling time. Injection velocity and packing pressure must be tuned using short-shot studies. A packing pressure of 50–70 MPa and holding time of 3–6 s/mm of nominal wall are common starting conditions, but pressure-drop measurements in the runner system are needed to avoid underpacking near the gate. Screw L/D ratios of 20:1 or higher with a compression ratio between 2.0:1 and 2.5:1 are suitable for melt homogeneity. Back pressure in the range of 0.5–1.0 MPa assists dispersion without excessive shear heating. At melt temperatures above 250°C or residence time exceeding 300 s, the polybutadiene phase may undergo thermal degradation, producing brown streaks, acrid odour, and loss of Charpy impact. Regrind levels up to 20 wt% are common for non-appearance parts, but the regrind must be dried and free of fines. For moisture-sensitive production at RH > 60%, hopper dryers are insufficient; a desiccant-bed or rotor-wheel dryer with a dew point below -30°C should be used. For a projected part area of 500 cm² and an assumed cavity pressure of 30 MPa, clamp force requirement is approximately 1,500 kN; this should be verified with mould-filling simulation.

What Distinguishes Grade 990 From High-Flow and High-Impact ABS Variants?

The main differentiation is the balance of melt volume-flow rate and impact resistance. High-flow ABS grades with MVR above 30 cm³/10 min at 220°C/10 kg may fill thin-wall parts more easily but typically sacrifice notched Charpy impact at 23°C and exhibit lower molecular mass, leading to reduced environmental stress-cracking resistance in contact with oils or food acids. High-impact ABS grades may show Charpy notched values above 30 kJ/m² at 23°C but often have lower MVR, higher melt viscosity, and require higher melt temperatures or injection pressures. ABS 990 class product is usually selected where a medium flow of 15–30 cm³/10 min maintains adequate ambient impact for appliance housings, small electrical enclosures, and consumer goods. Compared with transparent MABS, ABS 990 is opaque because the polybutadiene phase scatters visible light; gloss level depends on mould polish and melt/mould temperature. Compared with flame-retardant ABS, ABS 990 contains no brominated or phosphorus-based flame-retardant package and therefore cannot claim UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm unless a supplier yellow card states otherwise. The absence of flame retardants also means mould deposits are lower, but the material ignites more readily and must be evaluated under IEC 60695-11-10. Environmental stress-cracking resistance can be screened by the bent-strip method of ISO 22088-3:2006; acetic acid, vegetable oil, and hand-cream contamination should be avoided before testing because these agents accelerate craze formation in stressed ABS.

For regulatory documentation, ABS 990 class materials are generally assessed against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 for lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB, PBDE, and four phthalates. Screening is often performed by X-ray fluorescence according to IEC 62321-3-1:2013 and wet chemistry per IEC 62321-5:2013 for lead and cadmium. REACH Regulation 1907/2006 requires communication of substances of very high concern above 0.1 wt% in articles under Article 33; the supplier should provide a full-disclosure document. For food-contact applications, unfilled ABS may be subject to FDA 21 CFR 177.1020 and EU Regulation 10/2011 migration testing, but no food-contact status is automatically conferred on ABS 990. Migration kinetics of residual acrylonitrile and styrene are matrix- and temperature-dependent; specific migration tests should follow the EN 1186 series and EN 13130-8:2004. If end-use marking is required, the material is marked as >ABS< under ISO 1043-1:2011. In automotive interior applications, odour and fogging tests such as VDA 270 and DIN 75201 may be requested, but published data for this specific configuration is limited and must be generated on final moulded parts.

When Flame-Retardant ABS or PC/ABS Is Required

Specifying ABS 990 in an application that requires UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm is inappropriate unless the supplier has obtained a yellow card for the exact colour and thickness. Flame-retardant ABS resins containing brominated additives or phosphorus-based synergists are designed for that purpose, though they may have lower impact strength and higher density. For enclosure applications requiring a heat deflection temperature above 100°C at 1.8 MPa or low-temperature impact at -30°C exceeding 20 kJ/m², a polycarbonate/ABS blend may be necessary. PC/ABS grades generally exhibit higher notched Charpy impact at -30°C and higher Vicat softening temperatures, but they are more sensitive to alkaline mould-release agents and may require elevated drying at 100–110°C for 3–4 h to prevent polycarbonate hydrolysis. ABS 990 should not be blended with polycarbonate without validating phase compatibility and processing conditions; unintentional blends can produce delamination and reduced weld-line strength. In plating-grade applications, ABS 990 may accept electroplating if etched with chromic acid or an equivalent process, but adhesion depends on butadiene distribution and moulding stress; ASTM B533 peel adhesion testing is required for plated ABS. For chemical contact with alcohols, greases, or outdoor weathering, ASA or PBT grades may be more appropriate because ABS 990 class resins have limited resistance to UV-induced yellowing and polar solvent stress cracking. In such cases, the selection boundary is defined by the end-use fluid exposure and by accelerated weathering data under ISO 4892-2:2013 or ASTM D2565-23.
