Application of Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1

Across thin-wall automotive interior trim, Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 is introduced as a neat styrenic base before downstream compounding. The compounding sequence determines final melt elasticity and low-gloss surface retention. In a typical opaque trim formulation, 2–4 wt% TiO₂-containing masterbatch is metered at the hopper throat, and a crosslinked styrene-acrylate matting concentrate is added at 2–5 wt% when the 60° gloss target is below 2.0. The blend is compounded on a corotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 36:1, screw speed 500–700 min⁻¹, and barrel temperatures 220–240 °C; the extrudate is pelletized and re-dried to below 0.05 wt% moisture before injection moulding. Injection moulding is performed with melt temperature 230–250 °C, nozzle temperature 235–245 °C, and mould temperature 40–60 °C. The hold pressure profile is set to 55–70 MPa peak, decaying to 25–35 MPa before gate freeze; back pressure is maintained at 0.5–1.5 MPa to stabilize melt density. In production-scale 80–120 t clamp equipment with 35–40 mm screws, maintaining a melt cushion of 2–4 mm remains critical because a cushion drift greater than ±1.0 mm shifts hold pressure transfer and produces sink marks on ribbed areas. Weld lines at gate junctions reduce Charpy notched impact as measured to ISO 179-1/1eA by 25–35% relative to nominal; rib thickness should therefore not exceed 0.6 of the nominal wall. Components such as instrument cluster bezels, door trim inserts, and centre console side panels are tested for flammability to ISO 3795/FMVSS 302, for VOC emission to VDA 278, and for SVHC compliance under REACH EC 1907/2006. If the final part is exposed to a polyurethane foam backing, a 1–2 mm ABS skin thickness is maintained to prevent visible sink transfer after foaming.

Gate and runner layout influences low-temperature impact retention of visible interior parts. Baffled cold-runner systems with round cross-sections of 4–6 mm diameter are used for medium-flow ABS, while valve-gated hot runners are applied where gas inclusions are observed at high injection velocities. Screw recovery time should not exceed cooling time by more than 20%, otherwise melt residence time at 230 °C exceeds 5 min and initiates yellowing of the styrenic phase. On automotive lines this yellowing appears first at the nozzle tip and is detected as a b* shift above 0.5 units in the injection-moulded plaque compared with the reference pellet.

What Melt Cushion Variation Is Acceptable in 1.2 mm Wall Stock?

Thin-wall electronics enclosures produced from Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 are usually moulded at wall stock between 1.2 mm and 2.0 mm, where the allowable melt cushion variation is tighter than in thick-wall automotive parts. On a 35 mm all-electric machine with a 20:1 L/D screw and a valve-gated hot runner, the cushion is set to 2–3 mm and monitored by screw position feedback; excursions beyond ±0.5 mm are corrected by adjusting shot size in 0.5 mm increments, because transfer from filling to holding occurs inside the cavity rather than at the screw limit. Melt temperature is maintained at 230–250 °C and mould temperature at 50–70 °C. Injection velocity is kept between 80–120 mm/s, and hold pressure is set to 45–60% of the peak injection pressure. Regrind addition is limited to 15–20 wt% for internal frames and to 10 wt% or less for visible surfaces, as higher regrind fractions reduce notched Charpy impact and increase black speck frequency from degraded polybutadiene domains. The material should be dried at 80 °C for 2–4 h to below 0.05 wt% moisture, with a desiccant dryer dew point ≤ −30 °C. Finished parts such as router bases, low-voltage circuit breaker covers, and network switch faceplates are evaluated according to ISO 527-2 for tensile yield stress, ISO 179-1/1eA for Charpy notched impact, and UL 94 for HB classification at 1.5 mm. Vicat softening temperature is determined to ISO 306/B50; if a lot falls below 95 °C, the end-product continuous service temperature claim is derated in the design documentation.

Short shots at boss features and ejector pin marks are the two most frequent failure modes when the cushion is not stabilized. Bosses with a diameter of 4–6 mm and a wall thickness of 1.2–1.5 mm require a separate pack phase of 0.2–0.4 s after the main holding stage to compensate for volumetric shrinkage. The plastication unit should be purged with a styrenic purging compound after colour changes; residual black or metallic pigments alter dissipation factor and are unacceptable for enclosures near antenna keep-out zones.

When Chromic Acid Etch Penetration Exceeds the Butadiene Shell Thickness

In decorative electroplating, Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 is selected for its rubber-phase distribution, not for standardized mechanical properties alone. The chromic acid/sulfuric acid etch removes polybutadiene-rich domains and produces an undercut morphology that anchors the electroless nickel layer. The operating window is narrow: etch bath temperature between 60 °C and 68 °C, CrO₃ concentration 350–420 g/L, H₂SO₄ 180–220 g/L, and immersion time 6–12 min. If etch penetration exceeds the butadiene shell thickness, the substrate forms a weak boundary layer of collapsed cell structure and the plated layer peels at values below the part-specific peel acceptance. Under-etching leaves insufficient pit density and causes skip plating at low-current-density regions such as ribs and recessed lettering. After etching, the parts receive a chromate-neutralizing rinse at 25–35 °C for 30–60 s, followed by SnCl₂/PdCl₂ colloidal activation with Pd²⁺ at 0.2–0.4 g/L and Sn²⁺ at 8–15 g/L. An acceleration step in 10% H₂SO₄ for 30–45 s converts the tin shell and exposes catalytic palladium. Electroless nickel is deposited at 30–40 °C to a thickness of 0.3–0.8 µm before electrolytic copper 15–25 µm, bright nickel 10–15 µm, and chromium 0.2–0.5 µm. The finished deposit system is tested to ASTM B604 and adhesion is measured by a peel test under ASTM B533; automotive OEM drawings typically require no visible lift after 24 h at 80 °C. Parts include badges, mirror housings, and faucet trim. The process is not recommended for regrind from plated parts unless the metal is completely stripped and the regrind fraction is below 10 wt%, because residual metallic fragments generate dielectric losses in the plated layer.

Jig contact areas introduce another failure site. Electroplating racks should mask areas where low current density cannot be avoided, because the electroless nickel strike thickness varies with bath agitation and rack geometry. Agitation by air sparging at 0.2–0.6 L/min per bath volume in litres reduces local depletion of trivalent chromium and improves pit uniformity. After plating, parts are annealed at 60–70 °C for 30–60 min to release hydrogen before peel testing; skipping this step can produce brittle fracture of the ABS substrate under peel load rather than cohesive failure in the coating.

After ejection of textured appliance housings, Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 is frequently joined by 20 kHz ultrasonic welding rather than adhesive bonding, because the styrenic phase responds readily to viscoelastic heating. The weld joint is designed with an energy director included angle of 90°, a shear interference of 0.25–0.35 mm, and a wall thickness at the joint of 1.5–2.0 mm. Welding parameters fall within amplitude 40–60 µm, weld time 0.15–0.25 s, hold time 0.20–0.40 s, and trigger pressure 0.15–0.25 MPa; deviations above 0.25 s at high amplitude cause molten squeeze-out and visible flash on textured surfaces. The moulding process uses melt temperature 230–250 °C, mould temperature 50–65 °C, and textured cavity surfaces with draft angles of at least 1.5° per side to avoid ejection drag. Regrind is limited to 20 wt% in non-visual components and 10 wt% in front covers, with pre-drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h. For electrical and electronic appliance housings, compliance is assessed against IEC 60335-1 clause 30.2; parts used in unattended appliances with connections greater than 0.2 A may require glow-wire resistance at 750 °C according to IEC 60695-2-11. Because Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 in neat unreinforced form is not inherently flame-retarded, a separate FR-modified compound may be required to pass the glow-wire threshold. The material should not be combined with ketone-, ester-, or chlorinated-solvent-based cleaners under stress, as these agents promote environmental stress cracking in the polybutadiene phase. End products include vacuum cleaner housings, dehumidifier shells, and air purifier front covers.

Bosses and snap fits on appliance housings are another source of production loss when the mould has insufficient cooling. For a boss with outer diameter 6.0 mm and hole diameter 3.2 mm, the core pin should be cooled by a bubbler flow of 2–4 L/min to bring the boss wall below the heat deflection temperature before ejection. Premature ejection produces ovality greater than 0.15 mm and reduces snap-fit retention after 5000 engagement cycles.

Thermoforming Sag Resistance and Sheet Pre-Drying Thresholds

For monolayer extruded sheet, Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 is fed through a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1–36:1, barrel temperatures 210–230 °C, and a sheet die set at 220–240 °C. A vertical three-roll stack is maintained at 70–90 °C to control surface replication and sheet gauge. Regrind from edge trim can be incorporated up to 30 wt% if it is re-dried to 0.03 wt% moisture or lower; higher moisture produces splay and microvoids that become visible during thermoforming. Sheet thickness for luggage shells and equipment covers typically lies between 2.0 mm and 6.0 mm, with a gauge tolerance of ±0.05 mm across a 600 mm roll face. Before thermoforming, the sheet is heated to a surface temperature of 140–170 °C; an infrared pyrometer or scanning IR camera is used to confirm a temperature spread of less than ±5 °C. Sag resistance is controlled by the hot modulus of the selected lot and by sheet width; excessive sag at the forming station can be reduced by lowering sheet temperature by 3–5 °C or by increasing the pre-drying temperature within the 80 °C limit. Formed parts are inspected for wall-thickness distribution and free shrink at 100 °C, which should remain below 0.5% for dimensionally stable equipment covers. When a PMMA cap layer of 50–80 µm is co-extruded for scratch resistance, the ABS layer should be dried below 0.05 wt% moisture and the PMMA layer below 0.03 wt% to prevent interfacial haze. End products include luggage shells, caravan interior panels, and medical cart covers; compliance for these non-food applications is typically limited to REACH and RoHS declarations.

Molecular orientation at the roll stack determines the thermoforming window. The first roll gap should be adjusted to produce no more than 0.10 mm of drawdown over a 3 mm sheet; higher drawdown increases longitudinal orientation and causes wall thinning at the thermoformed corners. If the formed corner thickness drops below 0.8 mm, the final part is rejected because impact failure occurs along the oriented styrenic chains under a 1 kg drop weight at −10 °C.

For solvent-welded ABS DWV networks, material selection under ASTM D2661 and ASTM D3965 requires a cell class designation that covers impact, deflection temperature, tensile strength, and modulus; published data for this specific Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 configuration in pipe cell class 4-2-2-2 is limited, and the grade should be evaluated against the relevant cell limits before pipe production. Pipe extrusion is performed on a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1, vacuum sizing, and barrel temperatures 200–220 °C; die temperature is generally held at 190–210 °C to limit die swell and maintain wall thickness. Injection-moulded fittings are processed at melt temperature 220–240 °C and mould temperature 50–70 °C. A processing aid is dosed at 0.5–1.5 phr and an impact modifier at 5–10 phr where low-temperature impact requirements exceed the base resin’s notched Izod capacity; regrind from clean pipe and fitting sprues is used up to 20 wt%. Solvent cement joining relies on the solubility of ABS in mixtures of methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, and cyclohexanone at 25–35 wt% solids; the joined assembly is leak-tested or pressure-tested under ASTM D2661 and ASTM D3965. Hydrostatic design basis and fitting pressure ratings should be determined under ISO 15493 or the relevant national installation code. End products include DWV pipe, fittings, and traps for residential and light commercial drainage; the grade is not automatically suited for pressure water service or for continuous exposure to aggressive chlorinated water at elevated temperature.

Pipe wall thickness and dimensional stability are controlled by the vacuum sizing tank pressure at −20 kPa to −60 kPa relative to atmospheric pressure and water temperature at 15–25 °C. Excessive cooling below 15 °C increases residual thermal stress in the pipe wall and produces split failures during solvent cement joining at the spigot end. Finished pipe sections are conditioned at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50% ± 5% relative humidity for 24 h before dimensional measurement to ISO 3126.

    More Introduction

Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 is a general-purpose acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding compound supplied in pellet form for dimensionally stable enclosures, appliance housings, electrical mounting plates, and automotive interior trim. The supplier designation is ABS 1, identifying a medium-flow moulding grade rather than a flame-retardant or high-heat alloy. The material is selected in automated assembly operations where a controlled melt-volume range and reduced shrinkage anisotropy lower dimensional rejection after moulding. The data below represent a typical property envelope for this grade class; lot-specific data from the supplier certificate of analysis remain the only valid basis for production acceptance. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and performance should be confirmed on production-scale equipment.

The values are obtained from specimens conditioned at 23°C and 50% relative humidity for 40 h unless the cited standard prescribes otherwise. The flexural modulus is a short-term test result and is not a creep modulus; for long-term load-bearing parts, time-dependent data generated under ISO 899-2 should be applied. The melt volume-flow rate of 18–22 cm³/10 min places the material in a medium-flow band supporting wall thicknesses from 1.2 mm to 3.0 mm in multi-cavity tools. It is not suited to micro-moulded parts below 0.8 mm wall section, where higher-flow ABS or a thermoplastic elastomer-modified grade is required.

When the Melt-Temperature Window Is Narrower Than the Supplier's Recommended Band

Drying is the first process boundary. In a closed-loop desiccant dryer set at 80°C, pellets must be dried for 2–4 h to a moisture content below 0.05%. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, a 4 h drying cycle is required because pellet moisture uptake accelerates. If a non-desiccant hopper dryer is substituted, moisture may remain above 0.08%, producing silver streaks, nozzle splay, and plate-out on textured cores. On a 120-ton injection press with a 20:1 L/D screw, surface splay has been observed after only 1 h of interrupted drying when the dryer dew point rose above −20°C. The dew point must therefore be maintained at or below −30°C.

The barrel profile is normally set from 40–60°C in the feed zone, 210–230°C in the compression zone, 220–240°C in the metering zone, and 220–240°C at the nozzle. The melt temperature should remain below 260°C, and total residence time above 240°C should not exceed 5 min. If the nozzle temperature drops below 200°C, the pressure drop increases sharply and thin-wall areas shorter than 1.2 mm exhibit short shots and poor weld lines. If the melt temperature exceeds 250°C, the butadiene phase begins to degrade; notched impact measured under ISO 179-1:2023 can fall by more than 10% before visual discoloration is detected. The effective processing window is therefore 200–250°C at the nozzle, with a preferred range of 220–240°C.

Mould temperature should be controlled between 40°C and 80°C. Textured parts require the upper half of this band to replicate grain depth, while polished parts may be moulded at the lower half when cycle-time constraints dominate. Below 40°C, weld-line strength decreases due to premature melt freezing. Above 80°C, cycle time increases without a proportional improvement in notched impact.

Injection pressure should be set from 60 MPa to 100 MPa, with hold pressure at 50–70% of injection pressure. Back pressure is limited to 5–10 bar; higher back pressure increases melt temperature and accelerates yellowing. Screw rotation should be 30–60 rpm for a 35 mm screw, and larger screws should operate at a peripheral screw velocity below 0.3 m/s. At 220°C and 1000 s⁻¹ apparent shear rate, the apparent viscosity of this grade class is typically 80–120 Pa·s; published data for this specific configuration is limited. Shear rate above 1000 s⁻¹ can deform the rubber phase and reduce impact at gate areas.

On a 160-ton hydraulic press with a 24:1 L/D screw, a 2.5 mm-wall enclosure was moulded with a cycle time of 42 s and 18 s cooling when the mould temperature was 60°C. Nozzle melt-pressure variation remained within ±0.5 MPa after drying was stabilised. This supports closed-loop pressure-controlled injection for the grade. When insufficiently dried, the most common production-line symptom is not always visible splay but inconsistent screw recovery time; moisture can alter screw return by 5–10%, causing fill variation and dimensional drift.

Regrind is limited to 20% by weight with particle size 3–5 mm and moisture content below 0.08%. Higher regrind fractions reduce notched impact by more than 10% and broaden moulding shrinkage. The material should not be melt-blended with PVC or soft vinyl scrap because plasticizer migration can cause environmental stress cracking. Strong solvents such as methyl ethyl ketone and toluene must be avoided, particularly when moulded-in stress is not relieved.

Comparative Positioning Against Emulsion ABS and Polycarbonate Blends

Compared with standard emulsion ABS grades that can exhibit melt-flow drift and moulding shrinkage from 0.3% to 0.8%, Dongguan Qiantai ABS 1 is specified with a narrower flow band of 18–22 cm³/10 min and a shrinkage band of 0.4–0.7%. This tightening is relevant in automated downstream assembly because snap-fits and screw bosses near the edge of the tolerance band cause insertion force shifts and binding. A high-flow ABS with melt volume-flow rate above 30 cm³/10 min is better for wall thicknesses below 1.0 mm; ABS 1 retains higher notched impact at moderate wall thickness and is therefore preferred for enclosures with snap arms and restrained assembly.

Compared with a polycarbonate/ABS blend having heat deflection above 110°C, this grade has lower heat resistance and lower density. It should not be used in continuous load-bearing applications above 95°C. For fire enclosures under IEC 62368-1, the material is not a substitute for a V-0 flame-retardant ABS or PC/ABS unless the final part passes the relevant end-product fire test. Compared with a high-heat ABS using alpha-methylstyrene comonomer, ABS 1 has lower heat resistance but better colour retention after multiple heat histories; high-heat ABS can show viscosity increases after recycling due to alpha-methylstyrene oligomer formation. Compared with an electroplating-grade ABS, the rubber particle distribution and mould-release package may differ. For electroplating, a dedicated plating grade with controlled butadiene particle size and low mould release is recommended.

The product is not inherently ultraviolet-stable. Unpainted exterior parts in direct sunlight will chalk and lose gloss, so a UV-stabilized or painted grade should be used for exterior trim. For painted parts, adhesion depends on surface cleanliness and the absence of mould release agents; published data for this specific configuration is limited.

Regulatory documentation for the grade is application-specific. A typical lot-level statement includes the following markers:

    RequirementReferenceStatus
RoHS hazardous substance limitsIEC 62321Cadmium below 100 ppm; lead below 1000 ppm
REACH SVHC contentRegulation (EC) No 1907/2006SVHC at or below 0.1% by mass per substance
Flammability classificationUL 94Expected HB at 1.5 mm; UL yellow card must be confirmed
Food-contact status21 CFR 177.1020Not certified by default; end-product extraction testing required

These declarations are raw-material statements and do not release the processor from end-product evaluation. If food-contact status under 21 CFR 177.1020 is required, the final part must be tested because mould release agents, regrind, and colourants may alter compliance. Final moulded parts must be evaluated under the relevant end-product standard for the intended application.
