Application of Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5

Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 enters automotive interior trim production as a general-purpose injection-molding feedstock where the part is classified as low-stress, non-safety, and not exposed to continuous direct sunlight or sustained service temperatures above 85 °C. Before plastication, the granulate is dried in a desiccant dryer with supply-air dew point no higher than -40 °C; a set-point of 80 °C for 2–4 h reduces residual moisture to below 0.02 wt% and is mandatory when ambient RH exceeds 60%. A vacuum hopper receiver transfers dried pellets to the feed throat of a reciprocating-screw injection molding machine with L/D ratio of 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio between 2.2:1 and 2.8:1. The barrel profile is commonly set at 210 °C in the rear zone, 230 °C in the center zone, 240 °C in the front zone, and 245 °C at the nozzle; the exact profile should be lowered if the supplier certificate reports melt volume-flow rate above 20 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C/10 kg, because high-shear heating can exceed 250 °C and initiate butadiene-phase discoloration. Mold temperature is held between 40 °C and 80 °C using a pressurised water TCU with closed-loop temperature difference between inlet and outlet limited to 2 °C. Injection velocity is set to produce a fill time of 1.2–2.5 s for a 2.0 mm nominal wall; peak injection pressure typically remains between 70 MPa and 110 MPa. Packing pressure is staged from 55% to 65% of peak injection pressure for 3–6 s, transitioning to backpressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa during screw recovery to control melt homogeneity. For painted interior trim parts, regrind content is limited to 20 wt% because higher recycled-material fractions raise the coefficient of linear thermal expansion and increase the probability of paint delamination under ISO 2409 cross-cut testing. Terminal components in this category include door handle escutcheons, interior mirror bezels, seat-adjustment side covers, and instrument panel side finishers. Post-molding testing relies on ISO 527-2 for tensile yield, which for unfilled injection ABS typically lies between 35 MPa and 50 MPa; ISO 178 flexural modulus commonly lies between 1.8 GPa and 2.6 GPa; ISO 179-1/1eA Charpy notched impact at 23 °C commonly lies between 10 kJ/m² and 25 kJ/m²; and ISO 75-2/B deflection temperature under 0.45 MPa commonly lies between 80 °C and 100 °C. These ranges are industrial reference envelopes for general-purpose ABS and must be checked against the Dongguan Pule Plastic certificate of analysis for lot-specific 70D5. Paint adhesion on exterior-facing interior trims is evaluated after flame or plasma pre-treatment using ISO 2409; a cross-cut rating of class 1 or better is expected for parts with low internal stress. Odor and VOC requirements for automotive interiors reference VDA 278:2011 and OEM-specific fogging tests; the resin should be stored away from styrene-emitting co-mingled materials and molded under nitrogen-purge hopper conditions if lot acceptance includes a total carbon emission ceiling.

What Processing Window Prevents Sink Marks in Thin-Wall Washing Machine Fascia?

The use of Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 in washing machine control-panel surrounds, refrigerator door caps, and dishwasher display bezels is constrained less by bulk mechanical strength than by surface appearance and dimensional stability after repeated thermal cycling. Sink marks are controlled by holding the gate-seal time to at least 0.5 s after the melt at the gate reaches the no-flow temperature; this requires cavity-pressure sensors in the post-gate area, because switchover from velocity to pressure control must occur before volumetric filling reaches 95%. When the part has a nominal wall thickness of 2.3–2.8 mm, the rib root thickness should not exceed 55% of the adjoining wall and the base radius should be 0.25–0.50 mm; bosses for self-tapping screws are cored with an outside diameter 2.0–2.5 times the screw nominal diameter and tied to the main wall with a minimum of four gussets. A gate land length of 1.0–1.5 mm and a fan-gate width equal to 60–70% of the local wall width are used to avoid jetting. Barrel temperatures are kept at 220–245 °C, mold temperature at 60–70 °C, and screw rotation at 80–120 min⁻¹ with backpressure of 0.5–1.0 MPa. Regrind from the same production lot is limited to 15 wt% in high-gloss visible surfaces; higher regrind fractions alter melt viscosity and create visible flow lines. Compliance for household appliances is anchored to IEC 60335-1 clause 30.2 for resistance to heat and fire, with glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 at 750 °C or 850 °C depending on the current carried by the adjacent connection; unfilled ABS 70D5 is suitable only for decorative fascia, knob surrounds, and covers that do not retain live parts, because a non-flame-retardant ABS grade is not expected to meet UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm. Dimensional stability after thermal cycling is checked by ISO 294-4 shrinkage measurements, with unfilled ABS injection grades commonly showing 0.4–0.7% parallel shrinkage and 0.5–0.8% perpendicular shrinkage; these values are strongly gate-dependent and must be verified on the production tool. Terminal parts include control-panel bezels, rotary knob outer rings, detergent drawer fronts, and door handle trims. Adhesive labels and in-mold decoration films should be tested for compatibility with the styrenic surface at 60 °C and 85% RH for 72 h; silicone release agents used in mold maintenance can reduce ink adhesion and should be excluded from the molding cell.

In electrical and electronic enclosure pre-compounding, Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 is normally let down in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 32:1 and a segmented screw profile containing two kneading blocks to disperse 1.5–3.0 wt% of a non-amine antistatic masterbatch and 0.1–0.3 wt% of a hindered phenolic process stabilizer. The compound is pelletized after 120-mesh melt filtration and re-dried at 80 °C for 2 h before injection molding. Final parts include router lower shells, power adapter housings, keyboard top cases, and switch/junction box covers. These components are molded with a nominal wall thickness of 1.8–2.5 mm; thin-wall panels use fill speeds of 60–100 mm/s and a velocity-to-pressure switchover at 96–98% of fill volume to reduce gas traps at the end-of-fill. Mold cooling is designed to limit the temperature difference between the cavity and core to less than 10 °C, and the coolant Reynolds number is kept above 10,000 in the turbulent regime to prevent hot spots at boss intersections. Because ABS 70D5 is not classified as a flame-retardant grade unless specifically stated in the supplier documentation, enclosure designers should restrict its use to applications where the printed circuit board is separately enclosed or where the product-level flammability acceptance is UL 94 HB at the minimum molded thickness. Compliance documentation for the European market references 2011/65/EU and its delegated amendments as well as REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for SVHCs; testing for restricted phthalates is generally superfluous for ABS but may be triggered by external flexibilizer masterbatches. Mechanical acceptance is verified with ASTM D638-14 at 50 mm/min for tensile properties and ASTM D256 notched Izod at 23 °C; general-purpose ABS grades typically show notched Izod values between 150 J/m and 350 J/m, but published data for this specific configuration is limited and the supplier lot certificate should be used for design allowables. Screw bosses in electrical enclosures are fatigue-sensitive under repeated board insertion; boss holes are sized for thread-forming screws with engagement length 2.5 times screw diameter, and the outer boss wall thickness is maintained at 0.8 times nominal wall thickness to avoid sink without sacrificing strip torque. The lower end of the process temperature window should be used for thin-wall parts, but the melt temperature must remain above 230 °C to prevent weld-line weakness at multi-pin connector openings.

Chair Armrest Shells: Gate Geometry, Boss Design, and Fatigue Loading Under EN 1335

Office seating components such as height-adjustable armrest shells, lumbar support covers, castor covers, and control-lever enclosures are molded from Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 when the mechanical demand is moderate and the part is not a load-bearing structural element. The gate strategy differs from appliance thin-wall molding in that the molten front must converge in a high-weld area behind the armrest pad; a curved edge gate or a valve-gated hot drop with gate diameter 1.5–2.0 mm is used to reduce jetting, and a separate tab gate is added at the boss array to raise weld-line temperature. The melt is processed at 225–245 °C, mold temperature at 55–75 °C, and packing pressure at 60–80 MPa for the first 4 s, followed by 40 MPa for an additional 6–10 s. Glass-fiber reinforced ABS should not be used in this unfilled grade application without re-validation, because fiber orientation in thin ribs will increase anisotropy and reduce notched impact in the flow direction. Boss designs follow the same rule as appliance fascias: outside diameter 2.0–2.5 times the screw diameter, wall thickness 0.7–0.9 times the adjacent wall, and a minimum of four gussets per boss. The complete subassembly is tested under EN 1335-2:2018 for office work chairs and ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017 for general-purpose office chairs, with cyclic armrest loading applied at the published force and cycle counts; ABS 70D5 should be limited to covers, shells, and non-structural trim because creep under sustained load is higher than glass-filled engineering resins. Tensile modulus of unfilled ABS under ISO 527-2 typically falls between 1.7 GPa and 2.5 GPa, while flexural modulus under ISO 178 typically falls between 1.8 GPa and 2.6 GPa; the actual value is dependent on pigmentation and regrind fraction. Regrind is capped at 25 wt% for black internal parts and 15 wt% for pigmented visible covers. In-mold texture of N110–N120 according to VDI 3400 is applied to the cavity surface to mask minor knit lines; a release angle of at least 0.5° per side is required to avoid ejection marks. Mold release sprays containing silicone are incompatible with post-molding adhesive tape assembly and should be replaced by water-based stearate alternatives. Finished parts are dimensionally audited using a fixture referencing datum surfaces defined in the part drawing; total warp over 250 mm length should be kept below 1.2 mm by balancing wall thickness and avoiding abrupt step changes.

When EN 71-3 Migration Limits Dictate Masterbatch Selection in Toy Construction Parts

When toy-grade masterbatches are sourced from a new compounder, the first qualification step for Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 is not a mechanical test but a migration test, because the finished component will be classified as a toy or toy component under the relevant market regime. The formulation must limit heavy-metal release to the migration limits of EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021; therefore, only masterbatches with documented EN 71-3 compliance are used, and the masterbatch loading is held between 2 wt% and 4 wt% to avoid exceeding the density- and surface-area-dependent extraction targets. Phthalate plasticizers are not required for ABS and should be absent from the final formulation; if the manufacturer blends color concentrates or process aids from external sources, those additives must be verified against REACH Annex XVII Entry 51. The molding process is set to reduce residual monomer and low-molecular-weight extractables: barrel temperatures are maintained at 215–235 °C, and melt residence time is limited to less than 6 min at temperature, because prolonged exposure above 240 °C can increase volatile degradation products and affect organoleptic tests. Mold temperature of 50–65 °C produces a glossy surface suitable for snap-fit engagement features; the tool is polished to SPI A-2 or better to reduce micro-roughness where food-contact simulation tests are performed by the customer, although ABS 70D5 is not marketed as a food-contact grade. Gate type is a submarine gate into an ejector pin boss to minimize visible witness marks on building-block outer surfaces; the gate diameter is 0.8–1.2 mm for a wall thickness of 2.0 mm. Packing pressure is kept at 50–60 MPa for 2–4 s, and cooling time is set to 8–12 s for small blocks with 2.0 mm walls. Mechanical tests on finished components refer to ASTM F963-17 for toys sold in the United States and EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018 for mechanical and physical properties in the EU; drop tests, tip-over tests, and torque tests are performed on the assembled product because ABS 70D5 is not intended for structural parts where a sharp-edge failure could cause a lacerative hazard without a secondary guard. Terminal components include interlocking blocks, connector pegs, gear wheels, and external housing elements of battery-operated toy vehicles. A documented lot-to-lot viscosity trace under ISO 1133-1:2022 helps maintain fixed injection-fill speeds; a shift of more than 15% in melt volume-flow rate against the qualification lot should trigger re-validation of fill time and pack pressure.

Gas-Counterpressure Molding Reorients Weld Lines in Thin-Ribbed Equipment Cases

For deep-draw protective cases, power-tool boxes, instrument transit cases, and aftermarket camera housings, Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 enters a demanding flow-length-to-wall-thickness regime where weld-line location, boss-root stress, and low-temperature impact performance govern reject rates. Weld lines generated at post holes and latch recesses are mitigated by gas-counterpressure molding in which the cavity is pre-pressurised with nitrogen at 0.5–1.5 bar before injection; this retards the advancing melt front, raises local melt temperature at the meeting line, and displaces trapped air from reinforcing-rib intersections. The process is not suitable for open molds without adequate seal; tooling must be fitted with perimeter O-rings and core slides must be sealed with thermally stable elastomers. Barrel temperatures for this process are set toward the upper ABS range at 235–245 °C to keep the flow front above the weld-line healing temperature, while mold temperature is held at 60–80 °C using heated oil or pressurized water. Injection velocity is deliberately reduced to 30–50 mm/s in the initial 30% of fill and increased to 80–100 mm/s only after the main cavity floor is covered; this sequence prevents air entrapment at the hinge-boss lands. The material is dried to below 0.02 wt% moisture, and regrind from sprue and runner systems is used at no more than 20 wt% because high regrind fractions reduce the molecular weight sufficiently to shallow the processing window. End-product acceptance uses ISO 2248:1985 for vertical drop testing on the filled case at ambient and at -20 °C; the case must not crack at the boss roots and the hinge pins must not pull through the housing. Notched Charpy impact under ISO 179-1/1eA at -20 °C is an incoming-lot screening test, and unfilled ABS grades commonly exhibit a 40–60% reduction in low-temperature impact relative to 23 °C; design allowables should therefore use the cold-temperature value for transit cases exposed to unheated air freight. Dimensional inspection follows ISO 294-4 shrinkage characterization on the actual tool, with total post-mold shrinkage for a 3.0 mm wall often in the range 0.4–0.7%, but published data for this specific configuration is limited. Surface texture is specified as VDI 3400 N100–N130 in non-slip areas, and texturing depth must not exceed 10% of the local wall thickness. The finished product is marked with the polymer identification code >ABS< under ISO 11469:2016 so that end-of-life recyclers can segregate the housing from polycarbonate and polypropylene components.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding grade supplied in pellet form and designated by the manufacturer for medium-flow applications requiring moderate notched impact strength at ambient temperature. Representative supplier-published and lot-certificate data position the material for appliance housings, electronic enclosures, small electrical appliance components, business machine covers, and automotive interior trim with wall thicknesses from 1.5 mm to 3.5 mm. The grade is not a flame-retardant compound; its typical flammability classification is HB at 1.5 mm when tested under IEC 60695-11-10. Published data for this specific configuration remains limited; where lot-specific values are not publicly available, property ranges in this technical introduction refer to supplier technical literature for Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 and to unfilled ABS compounds classified under ISO 2580-1:2007.

What Distinguishes ABS 70D5 from General-Purpose ABS Extrusion Grades?

Unlike high-molecular-weight extrusion ABS grades formulated for high melt elasticity and controlled die swell, Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 is a low-to-medium-viscosity injection moulding grade in which the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and grafted polybutadiene rubber phase are tuned for cavity filling rather than profile stability. General-purpose extrusion ABS commonly exhibits melt volume-flow rates of 5–12 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg, whereas ABS 70D5 typically falls within 15–25 cm³/10 min under identical conditions. Higher melt flow reduces filling pressure in thin-wall tooling but lowers hot-melt strength, making ABS 70D5 unsuitable for thick sheet extrusion or large-diameter pipe coextrusion where sag resistance is required. Compared with flame-retardant ABS containing brominated or phosphorus-based additives, ABS 70D5 does not contain halogenated flame retardants and does not release the same acidic decomposition products during processing. Compared with glass-filled ABS, the unfilled grade exhibits lower flexural modulus but reduced tool wear and higher surface gloss retention after moulding. Relative to high-impact refrigerator-liner or extrusion ABS grades, ABS 70D5 has a deliberately moderate rubber content: notched Izod impact at 23 °C is typically 16–24 kJ/m², below the 30–40 kJ/m² observed in high-impact extrusion grades, while heat deflection temperature under 1.82 MPa remains in the 88–96 °C range.

The comparative table is based on typical published values for unfilled and flame-retardant ABS categories and is not an acceptance specification for any individual lot of Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5.

Injection moulding of Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 proceeds with predrying in a desiccant dryer at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h. Residual moisture by weight should be held below 0.05 % before melting because hydrolysis of the styrene-acrylonitrile phase during plastication reduces molecular weight and lowers notched impact strength. At ambient relative humidity above 60 %, hopper residence time should be minimized and drying extended to 4–6 h. The dryer should supply air with a dew point no higher than -30 °C. Crushed regrind should be limited to 20 % by weight unless melt flow rate is re-verified after blending, and regrind should be re-dried under the same conditions. Draft angles of 0.5–1.0° and ejection below the Vicat softening point reduce deformation in thick bosses and snap-fit features. Gate placement should avoid direct injection into abrupt thickness changes; recommended gate thickness is 50–70 % of the adjacent wall and gate land length should not exceed 1.0 mm. Rib-to-wall ratio should be maintained at 0.5–0.6:1 to prevent sink marks.

When Mold Temperature Falls Below 40 °C, Surface Defects Accumulate

Mold temperature in the range 40–70 °C is required for Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5. At mold temperatures below 40 °C, the melt surface freezes before complete cavity packing, producing jetting, weld-line opacity, and reduced gloss at gate and rib intersections. In short-shot trials on a 120-ton hydraulic injection machine with a 20:1 L/D screw and non-return ring, filling pressure increased by approximately 15–20 % when mold temperature fell from 60 °C to 35 °C. Melt temperature should be maintained at 220–250 °C; sustained operation above 260 °C initiates thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase, producing yellowing and reducing multimode notched impact by more than 10 %. Injection pressure is typically 60–100 MPa, hold pressure 40–70 MPa, and back pressure 0.5–1.5 MPa. Screw rotation should not exceed 80 rpm for a 45 mm screw, and melt residence time should be limited to 8 min or less to limit gel formation. Weld lines in ABS 70D5 retain approximately 60–70 % of nominal tensile strength at 60 °C mold temperature; below 40 °C, weld-line strength can fall below 50 %. These weld-line strength values are drawn from general unfilled ABS behaviour and are not lot-specific acceptance data.

Before painting, plating, or adhesive bonding, moulded parts made from ABS 70D5 require removal of surface release agents, dust, and low-molecular-weight oxidation products. Isopropyl alcohol wiping followed by air drying at 40 °C for 15 min is used before adhesion testing under ASTM D3359-17. For electroplating, the butadiene phase is selectively etched with a chromic acid-sulfuric acid solution at 60–65 °C for 5–15 min, generating mechanical anchoring sites for electroless nickel or copper. Peel adhesion above 1.0 kN/m is expected only if etching produces a uniform microporous surface. Avoid amine-based antistatic additives or amine-cured epoxy adhesives in direct contact with unpainted parts at continuous service temperatures above 60 °C, because alkaline species can attack the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix and lower surface hardness.

Thermal Degradation Pathways and Venting Requirements in ABS 70D5 Processing

The thermal stability of Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 is governed by the oxidative lability of the butadiene domain and by hydrolysis sensitivity of the styrene-acrylonitrile matrix. Venting of the plastication unit is critical because volatile butadiene-derived oxidation products and residual moisture can generate silver streaks and internal voids in thick sections. Barrel settings should increase from 200 °C in the rear zone to 230–245 °C in the metering zone, with the nozzle held at 235–250 °C. Screw compression ratio should be 2.0–2.5:1, and L/D ratio should be ≥ 20:1 for uniform plastication. Vented screws are not normally required; if a vented barrel is used, vacuum should not exceed 0.06 MPa to avoid drawing polymer melt into the vent port. During purging after extended downtime, colour-stable transitions are obtained with a stiff polyethylene or acrylic purge compound at 220 °C, followed by short-shot sequences to displace degraded material from the check ring. Screw torque, nozzle drool, and black specks should be monitored; an increase in steady-state screw torque greater than 10 % at constant barrel temperature may indicate cross-linking of the rubber phase or accumulation of degraded material on the screw flights. Because the material does not contain flame-retardant additives, smoke from accidental over-temperature is dominated by styrene and acrylonitrile decomposition products and should be controlled through local exhaust ventilation with a face velocity of at least 0.5 m/s at the mould opening.

Rheological measurements on a capillary rheometer at 240 °C with a 1 mm die and 30:1 L/D indicate that shear viscosity decreases from approximately 400 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to 80 Pa·s at 1000 s⁻¹. The power-law index under these conditions is typically 0.55–0.65, confirming shear-thinning behaviour suitable for thin-wall filling but requiring attention to gate freeze-off time during packing. For a 2.5 mm wall, a tab gate of 1.5 mm thickness and 2.5 mm width has been used in production tooling to reduce jetting. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the rheological values are indicative for unfilled medium-impact ABS and not lot-specific acceptance limits.

A Compliance Matrix Is Required Before ABS 70D5 Is Used in Food-Contact Applications

Regulatory Area Applicable Standard or Directive Testing Condition Expected Outcome for ABS 70D5
EU Restriction of Hazardous Substances 2011/65/EU and (EU) 2015/863 XRF screening followed by IEC 62321-5 for cadmium and IEC 62321-6 for lead Below maximum concentration values unless contaminated by recycled content or fillers
REACH SVHC declaration EC No 1907/2006 Candidate list declaration for each lot No declaration above 0.1 % w/w expected for unfilled natural grade
RoHS phthalates 2011/65/EU annex II by (EU) 2015/863 GC-MS Not intentionally added
ABS resin classification ISO 2580-1:2007 / GB/T 12672-2009 Injection moulded test specimens under specified conditioning Unfilled ABS injection grade
    Flammability IEC 60695-11-10 1.5 mm bar, preconditioned 48 h at 23 °C and 50 % RH HB classification

Because Dongguan Pule Plastic ABS 70D5 is supplied without flame-retardant additives, use in enclosures for unattended mains-powered equipment requires additional evaluation under IEC 62368-1 or IEC 60335-1; the HB classification alone is not sufficient for components located near high-current conductors or arcing contacts. Continuous outdoor exposure without UV-stabilized grades leads to butadiene-phase photo-oxidation, surface chalking, and gloss loss within 12–24 months under intensive sunlight. Solvent resistance is limited: contact with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, or chlorinated hydrocarbons should be avoided because environmental stress cracking may occur at gate and weld-line regions with retained stress. For ultrasonic welding, a shear joint design is preferred over an energy director, with amplitude of 30–40 µm and hold time below 0.3 s. Lot-to-lot yellowness index should be checked against a supplier reference at CIE D65 illuminant with a 10° observer because minor variations in rubber-graft morphology influence perceived color in white and pastel variants. Processing at the lower melt-temperature boundary of 220 °C with severe shear from sprue diameters below 1.5 mm can produce unmelted matte streaks; such streaks are not a material defect but indicate insufficient plastication and must be corrected by increasing back pressure or reducing screw speed before mould trials proceed.
