Application of Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical ABS PC A

For lower instrument panel covers, glove box outer panels and center console side trim, the selection of Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical ABS PC A is driven by the requirement to hold weld-line tensile strength after high-humidity plant storage. Production-scale injection molding trials have shown that barrel residence times above 8 min at melt temperatures above 270°C increase visible splay at the gate and reduce weld-line tensile strength measured under ISO 527-2:2012 by 12–18% compared with parts molded within a 6 min residence window. The material is dried at 100°C for 4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.02%; where plant relative humidity exceeds 60%, desiccant hopper drying is retained at a dew point of −35°C to prevent hydrolysis of the polycarbonate phase during plastication. In this application the shot formulation is metered as 95–97 wt% virgin ABS PC A, 1.0–1.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch, 0.4–0.8 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer concentrate, and 0.3–0.5 wt% montan ester release agent; closed-loop sprues and runners are reprocessed at no more than 15 wt% of the total shot mass to sustain notched Izod impact above 40 kJ/m² under ISO 180/1A:2023. The melt is injected into a cold runner mold with a mold temperature of 70–80°C, an average barrel profile of 245/255/265/270°C from feed throat to nozzle, injection speed of 30–60 mm/s, and holding pressure of 60–80 MPa. Screw recovery speed is set below 0.15 m/s to minimize shear heating. Compliance for automotive interior trim is assessed according to ISO 3795:1989 with a maximum burn rate of 100 mm/min, the EU 2000/53/EC end-of-life vehicle directive Annex II for restricted heavy metals, REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 Article 33 SVHC notification, and RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II for electrical subcomponents. Terminal parts include glove box outer panels, lower instrument panel covers, center console side trim, speaker grille frames, and lower B-pillar covers. Textured surfaces are typically specified at VDI 27 to VDI 33; gate locations are sequenced to prevent visible knit lines around vent-hole features, and cavity venting depth is held below 0.02 mm to avoid flash while allowing gas discharge during filling.

What Limits Glow-Wire Performance at 850°C in Thin-Wall Charger Housings?

The adoption of ABS PC A in thin-wall external charger housings is governed by end-product glow-wire requirements rather than by tensile strength alone, because wall thicknesses are frequently specified at 1.0–1.5 mm. The alloy’s melt volume-flow rate at 260°C under 5 kg is typically 15–25 cm³/10 min under ISO 1133-1:2022, sufficient for high-speed cavity filling but not sufficient by itself to guarantee flame-retardant classification. When the housing must satisfy IEC 60695-2-11:2021 glow-wire testing at 850°C with no flame persistence longer than 2 s and no ignition of the tissue indicator, a halogen-free phosphate ester masterbatch is dosed at 10–14 wt% of total shot mass through a gravimetric hopper unit with ±0.5 wt% accuracy; the virgin ABS PC A matrix then constitutes 84–88 wt%, with 1–2 wt% colorant and 0.3–0.5 wt% release agent. For non-classified internal brackets, the material is processed neat at 98–99 wt% polymer fraction. Predrying at 100°C for 4 h to 0.02% moisture is mandatory; phosphate ester flame retardants lower melt viscosity, so barrel temperatures are reduced by 5–8°C relative to unfilled PC/ABS to prevent nozzle drooling. Injection molding of charger housings uses a mold temperature of 75–85°C, melt temperature of 245–260°C, injection speed of 80–120 mm/s, and screw back pressure of 5–8 MPa. Tool steel is hardened to 54–56 HRC because phosphate ester acidic byproducts accelerate gate and vent wear. Jetting is suppressed by positioning gates away from thin ribs and using a hemispherical sprue puller; sequential valve gating is adopted for multi-gate laptop bottom covers to remove hollow knit lines. Published data for this specific grade at wall thickness below 1.0 mm under IEC 60695-2-11:2021 is limited; end-product testing is mandatory. Terminal parts include wall-mount AC charger housings, laptop bottom covers, monitor rear housings, set-top box front fascias, and power adapter shells.

Quaternary Ammonium Disinfectant Compatibility in Diagnostic Equipment Housings

ABS PC A is used in diagnostic equipment enclosures where the molded part is defined as a non-invasive external housing and must tolerate repeated cleaning with hospital-grade disinfectants without losing dimensional stability. The dominant failure mode is environmental stress cracking at sharp corners, not hydrolytic degradation; the polycarbonate phase is attacked by polar solvents under tensile stress, and repeated wiping with 70% isopropanol or quaternary ammonium compounds can accelerate stress cracking if molded-in stress is high. The polymer fraction is 96–98 wt% of the shot, with 1–2 wt% gamma-stable color masterbatch free of cadmium, lead, mercury, and hexavalent chromium, 0.2–0.5 wt% high-viscosity silicone oil, and 0.1–0.3 wt% antioxidant. Amine-containing antistatic additives are excluded because amine residues cause polycarbonate chain scission at processing temperatures above 260°C. Compliance is tested according to ISO 10993-5:2009 for cytotoxicity and ISO 10993-10:2021 for skin irritation and sensitization when the housing is classified as a limited-contact device component; electrical safety and flammability for medical electrical equipment fall under IEC 60601-1:2020 and IEC 60695-2-11:2021 glow-wire testing at 750°C for enclosures containing accessible live parts. Molding is carried out on a high-cleanliness injection machine with a three-zone screw L/D of 22:1, melt temperature of 255–270°C, mold temperature of 75–85°C, and cooling time of 18–25 s for 2.5 mm nominal wall thickness. Cavities are polished to SPI A-2 finish, and parting lines are located away from fluid pathways to reduce contamination retention. Weld-line strength at boss locations is validated by tensile tests under ISO 527-2:2012; if knit-line strength falls below 80% of the reference value, melt temperature and injection speed are increased within the specified window before changing gate locations. Quantitative environmental stress-cracking thresholds for this specific grade under repeated disinfectant exposure are limited; validation on the molded part with the actual disinfectant mixture is mandatory. Terminal parts include patient monitor rear enclosures, mobile diagnostic cart display frames, ultrasound scanner side panels, and IV pump outer shells. The material is not used for long-term implant components, blood-contact devices, or steam sterilization trays because the ABS phase lacks the required chemical resistance.

If Drop-Impact Retention at −20°C Governs Cordless Tool Housing Selection

Power tool housings molded from ABS PC A are evaluated predominantly by cold impact performance after drop events; material selection hinges on retention of ductile failure at −20°C because cordless tools are transported in unheated vehicle compartments. The unfilled alloy avoids fiber orientation-induced warpage in long, thin gearcase walls, but impact modification is often required to pass multi-axis drop tests. The formulation in this segment is 92–96 wt% ABS PC A, 3–6 wt% olefinic impact modifier concentrate, 1–2 wt% black or gray colorant, and 0.3–0.8 wt% non-amine antistatic concentrate. If a soft-touch overmold is used, the ABS PC A substrate is molded first as a 2.0 mm core and then overmolded with 45–55 Shore A TPU in a two-shot rotary platen machine. Compliance for hand-held motor-operated tools is linked to IEC 62841-1:2021 mechanical strength and drop testing, ISO 180/1A:2023 notched Izod impact, ISO 6603-2 instrumented puncture impact, UL 94 HB or V-0 depending on market, and REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII restrictions. Drying is at 100°C for 4 h, with residual moisture below 0.02%. The melt temperature is held at 255–270°C, mold temperature at 70–85°C, injection pressure at 100–130 MPa, holding pressure at 65–85 MPa, and back pressure at 5–10 MPa. Screw design includes distributive mixing elements and an L/D of 20:1 to 24:1; reverse-taper nozzles prevent drooling during mold open. Gates are placed at thick boss regions rather than thin wall regions to prevent jetting; post-mold conditioning for 24 h at 23°C and 50% RH is required before cold impact testing. Terminal parts include cordless drill housings, angle grinder rear handles, jigsaw gearcase shells, and impact driver body housings.

Residual Moisture Above 0.03% in Household Appliance Control Panels Produces Silver Streaking

Because appearance-critical white control panels are intensely sensitive to melt-residence defects, the largest production reject mode for ABS PC A in washing machine and dishwasher consoles is silver streaking caused by residual moisture or overheated melt. The grade is selected because its Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306:2022 is approximately 125–130°C, above the 60–80°C surface heat rise expected in enclosed appliance controls. The white high-gloss formulation is 92–96 wt% ABS PC A, 3–5 wt% encapsulated titanium dioxide masterbatch, 0.2–0.5 wt% acid scavenger, 0.1–0.3 wt% optical brightener, and 0.3–0.5 wt% montan ester release agent. Encapsulated TiO₂ is selected over standard rutile because uncoated pigment particles can nucleate polycarbonate chain scission and reduce notched Izod impact by 10–15% relative to unfilled compound under ISO 180/1A:2023. Household safety compliance is verified under IEC 60335-1:2020 and IEC 60695-2-11:2021 glow-wire testing at 750°C for unattended appliance enclosures; material declarations meet RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH (EC) No 1907/2006 SVHC thresholds. Injection compression molding is used for large control panel surfaces to reduce residual stress and improve flatness. Drying is at 100°C for 4 h, dew point −35°C, and melt temperature 250–270°C. Mold temperature is 75–90°C with pulsed cooling; sequential valve gating is required to control weld-line visibility at display apertures. Hot runner tips are selected with 0.5 mm gate vestige to avoid drool. The packing phase is extended to 6–8 s and holding pressure to 70–90 MPa for 2.5 mm nominal wall. Terminal parts include washing machine top consoles, dishwasher control fascia, dryer door decorative covers, and range hood control panel frames.

For internal card guides and EMI shield support frames in set-top boxes and routers, Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical ABS PC A is processed directly as supplied because dimensional stability and low warpage outweigh impact toughness at these component sizes. The shot formula is 98–99 wt% polymer fraction and 1–2 wt% carbon black masterbatch; no regrind is used in transparent variants, but black internal parts may accept 20 wt% reprocessed sprues and runners. Drying at 100°C for 3 h to residual moisture below 0.02% is required, followed by injection molding at melt temperature 250–260°C, mold temperature 60–70°C, and low back pressure 3–5 MPa. Compliance is limited to RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH (EC) No 1907/2006. Terminal components include router internal card guides, set-top box tuner brackets, hard-disk drive trays, and internal cable management rails.

    More Introduction

Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical ABS PC A is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene/polycarbonate alloy supplied in pellet form and positioned between unmodified ABS and neat polycarbonate in melt processability, heat resistance, and impact behavior. The product identifier ABS PC A is a commercial grade designation within Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical’s ABS/PC portfolio. The letter “A” does not follow a universal alloy ratio convention, and the exact polycarbonate content, compatibilizer composition, and modifier package are not stated in publicly accessible documentation. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so application qualification should rely on lot-specific certificates of analysis obtained from the manufacturer and on comparative property measurements performed according to ISO 1183-1, ISO 527-2, ISO 179-1/1eA, and ISO 75-2.

General-purpose ABS/PC alloys of this class combine notched impact strength, heat deflection performance, and melt flow suitable for injection molding of thin-wall structural housings. The partial replacement of the styrenic phase with polycarbonate raises Vicat softening temperature and Charpy notched impact strength relative to ABS, while retaining lower melt viscosity than neat polycarbonate under typical thin-wall injection conditions. This property balance defines the application space: consumer electronics enclosures, small appliance structural components, electrical equipment housings, and automotive interior trim where unpainted surfaces must resist deformation above 100 °C and tolerate occasional mechanical shock without brittle failure.

The alloy occupies the intermediate property space between ABS and polycarbonate without full public datasheet coverage

For comparative material selection, the property envelope in Table 1 is drawn from general-purpose ABS/PC alloys with density values between 1.10 g/cm³ and 1.17 g/cm³. It should not be interpreted as a certificate of analysis for Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical ABS PC A. The table anchors the principal differences from unmodified ABS and neat polycarbonate under the same test methods and provides a screening basis for initial part design.

Compared with unmodified ABS, Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical ABS PC A is expected to show higher heat deflection temperature, higher Vicat softening temperature, and greater low-temperature impact strength. The trade-offs include slightly higher density, more stringent drying requirements, and greater sensitivity to alkaline contaminants because the polycarbonate phase hydrolyzes under residual moisture. Compared with neat polycarbonate, the alloy offers reduced melt viscosity under thin-wall injection conditions and improved flow with lower barrel temperature settings; however, its optical clarity is absent, its continuous service temperature is lower, and its chemical resistance to aromatic hydrocarbons and ketones remains limited.

When selecting among high-heat ABS, ASA/PC, PC/PBT, and ABS/PC grades, the primary distinctions are environmental stress cracking resistance, outdoor weathering stability, and chemical resistance. High-heat ABS raises HDT without polycarbonate but does not deliver equivalent low-temperature impact strength. ASA/PC retains better UV color retention but often requires higher melt temperature and may exhibit higher viscosity. PC/PBT offers improved resistance to automotive fuels and greases but carries higher density and is less dimensionally stable at low component thickness. ABS PC A, as an ABS/PC family material, is likely positioned for indoor and unpainted interior applications where dimensional stability under heat and moderate impact toughness are more important than long-term ultraviolet exposure or aggressive chemical contact. A direct comparison should be made with molded plaques produced from the same tool and the same test method rather than from datasheet values alone.

What Limits Injection Molding Cycle Consistency in ABS PC A?

Injection molding cycle consistency is governed primarily by moisture uptake, melt residence time, and the thermal sensitivity of the butadiene phase. For general-purpose ABS/PC alloys of this class, residual moisture above 0.02 wt% by Karl Fischer titration causes splay, gate blush, silver streaks, and reduction in notched impact strength. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 4 h or at 100 °C for 3 h is minimum industrial practice when unsealed pellets have been stored at relative humidity greater than 60 %. The dryer dew point should be no greater than -30 °C, and return air temperature should be verified at the hopper inlet rather than at the dryer outlet.

Melt temperature should be maintained between 250 °C and 275 °C for general-purpose grades, with the nozzle set 10–15 °C below the front zone to minimize drooling. Temperature deviations greater than ±5 °C across the barrel promote uneven viscosity and inconsistent packing pressure. At barrel temperatures above 280 °C or residence times longer than 5 min, the butadiene phase degrades and the polycarbonate phase may undergo chain scission, resulting in yellowing, reduced weld-line strength, and gel formation. This is a process conflict zone: adiabatic shear heating generated by screw rotation must be subtracted from the barrel setpoint, and the actual melt temperature measured by a needle pyrometer should be recorded, not inferred from zone settings.

Typical injection molding parameters for an ABS/PC alloy of this class on a L/D 22–24 general-purpose screw include injection pressure 80–120 MPa, hold pressure 40–70 MPa, back pressure 0.5–1.5 MPa, screw speed 80–120 rpm, and mold temperature 60–90 °C. For thin-wall sections below 1.5 mm, raising mold temperature to 90–110 °C improves melt-front stability but extends cycle time and increases sink-mark risk near ribs. Gate size should be at least 60–70 % of nominal wall thickness, and land length should be held below 1.0 mm to prevent premature freeze-off. Vent depths for ABS/PC are typically 0.02–0.04 mm; deeper vents cause flash, while insufficient venting produces burn marks and short shots.

Common failure modes observed on production-scale injection lines include gate blush from wet resin, silver streaks that begin at the gate and radiate across the part, dark specks from dead zones in hot-runner manifolds, and knit-line cracking in snap-fit bosses. These defects are directly traceable to insufficient drying, excessive melt temperature or residence time, and inadequate venting. The use of hopper magnets and melt filtration with screen packs of 60–100 mesh is standard on production-scale lines to capture carbonized styrene-butadiene residues. Regrind inspection after size reduction is necessary because granulate dust, moisture, and fine particles alter melt viscosity and surface appearance.

Drying, Rheology, and Thermal Stability Requirements

Drying is the first variable to be confirmed before processing ABS PC A. A desiccant dryer with a dew point not greater than -30 °C is preferred, and the return air temperature should be verified at the hopper inlet. The dried pellet moisture target is below 0.02 wt%, measured by ISO 15512 method A or an equivalent Karl Fischer method. If drying is interrupted beyond 2 h in humid ambient air, redrying may be required. The use of hopper magnets and melt filtration with screen packs of 60–100 mesh is standard on production-scale injection lines to capture carbonized styrene-butadiene residues.

Capillary rheometry according to ISO 11443 at 260 °C and shear rates from 100 s⁻¹ to 5000 s⁻¹ typically shows shear-thinning behavior for ABS/PC alloys, with viscosity at 1000 s⁻¹ in the range of 120–250 Pa·s for commercial general-purpose grades. The same measurement should be performed on the supplier’s reference lot because the PC fraction, compatibilizer package, and melt flow modifier directly alter the Cross-WLF viscosity model parameters. An MVR value measured at 260 °C/5 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022 provides lot-to-lot flowability screening but does not replace capillary or injection-line pressure drop validation for thin-wall filling.

Thermal stability is limited by both phases. The ABS phase contains unsaturated butadiene that undergoes oxidative degradation at high melt temperatures; the PC phase undergoes hydrolysis in the presence of moisture and base-catalyzed degradation in the presence of amines. Formulations containing amine-based UV stabilizers, amine-terminated flame retardants, or certain colored concentrates should be evaluated by melt viscosity shift and yellowing index after a 10-min hold at 270 °C. Avoid contamination with polyamide, acetal, or polyethylene terephthalate residues in hoppers, screw assemblies, and hot-runner systems because phase incompatibility produces delamination defects. For regrind, inspection of granulate color, dust fraction, and moisture after size reduction is necessary; production-scale lines often limit regrind to 20 wt% for dimensionally stable parts, but published data for the specific ABS PC A configuration is limited.

When Flame-Retardant or UV-Stabilized Specifications Are Applied

If a V-0 rating under UL 94 is required, the selected ABS/PC compound may contain phosphorus-based flame retardants that modify flow behavior, reduce Vicat softening temperature, and increase mold deposit formation compared with the base polymer. The flame-retardant package in commercial ABS/PC alloys can reduce tensile strength by 5–10 % relative to non-flame-retardant equivalents and may require mold temperatures at the upper end of the 70–90 °C range to maintain surface gloss and knit-line strength. Compliance must be verified by the supplier against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Article 33, not inferred from polymer type alone.

For UV-stabilized outdoor-adjacent applications such as automotive interior sun-loaded surfaces, UV absorbers and hindered amine light stabilizers must be compatible with polycarbonate. Some primary antioxidants and metal stearates used in ABS processing can interact with PC condensation chemistry; therefore, additive selection should be confirmed with the supplier. The absence of a public datasheet for ABS PC A means that any claim regarding UL 94 classification, glow-wire ignition temperature under IEC 60695-2-13, or comparative tracking index under IEC 60112 requires a lot-specific report from Dongguan Lidong Plastic Chemical or an accredited laboratory.

A production-scale qualification trial of ABS PC A for a thin-wall electronic enclosure should begin with a processor audit of material moisture, actual melt temperature, injection pressure, and screw recovery time. The component typically enters the viable processing envelope when wall section is 1.5–2.5 mm, nominal flow length-to-thickness ratio does not exceed 150:1 under a 60 °C mold condition, and ribs are designed with a thickness of 40–60 % of the adjoining wall to avoid sink marks. Weld lines generated by multi-gate tooling retain 30–60 % of the solid-wall tensile strength in general-purpose ABS/PC alloys; if the design places weld lines in high-stress bosses or snap-fit features, prototype validation should be performed using ISO 527-2/1A specimens cut from plaques molded under the same thermal history.

For applications requiring painting or adhesive bonding, surface energy and mold-release contamination control become critical. Silicone-based mold-release agents used on mold surfaces can reduce paint adhesion and should be replaced with mist-free, volatile release agents or eliminated entirely. Environmental stress cracking resistance under ISO 22088-3 is advised when the part is exposed to plasticizers, synthetic esters, or automotive interior cleaners; aromatic hydrocarbons and ketones should be excluded from direct contact. The material should not be used in load-bearing translucent glazing, solvent-contact fluid handling, or high-temperature underhood environments exceeding 105 °C continuous exposure without specific long-term thermal aging data for the exact grade.
