Application of Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101

In automotive air-distribution components such as passenger-vehicle air vent louvres, HVAC mode flaps and centre console side panels, Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101 is processed by two-plate hydraulic injection moulding machines with a screw L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.6:1. The first processing decision is drying because absorbed moisture above 0.05% hydrolyses at melt temperatures exceeding 220°C and produces surface splay, gate blush and reduced low-temperature Charpy impact. Pre-drying in a dehumidifying hopper dryer at 80°C for 3 h to 4 h with a dew point below −35°C is standard for lots exposed to ambient relative humidity above 60%. Barrel temperature profiles from feed to nozzle are set between 210°C and 240°C, with a melt temperature measured by pyrometer at the nozzle of 230°C to 245°C. Mould temperature should be held at 40°C to 60°C to balance gloss and dimensional stability. Injection velocity should be profiled: medium-high speed through the runner, then reduced at the gate to prevent jetting and hesitation marks on textured cabin-trim surfaces. Hold pressure of 50 MPa to 70 MPa is required to compact the melt and prevent sink marks over bosses and rib intersections. Back pressure of 0.5 MPa to 1.5 MPa and screw surface speed below 0.5 m/s avoid excessive shear heating and yellowing. Shrinkage in this grade class is anisotropic, with machine-direction shrinkage of 0.4% to 0.6% and transverse shrinkage of 0.5% to 0.7% when measured on ISO 294-4 plaques. For unpainted interior parts, gloss consistency across weld lines is controlled by gate placement and melt temperature; weld-line depth should not exceed 0.08 mm in visible Class A surfaces. Compliance for cabin materials is anchored to ISO 3795 or FMVSS 302 horizontal burn rate testing, with a maximum burn rate of 100 mm/min for most interior component specifications. Low-temperature impact after heat ageing is typically assessed by ISO 179-1/1eU Charpy unnotched testing at −30°C, because ABS 101 retains lower butadiene-phase mobility below its glass transition onset and must not be loaded above 2.5% regrind in visible automotive parts unless end-customer approval is documented. Published data for this specific Dongguan Lidong grade configuration is limited; the ranges above represent batch-class general-purpose ABS 101 processing boundaries rather than guaranteed certificate values.

What constraint does UL 94 HB thickness impose on ABS 101 enclosure ribs and boss design?

The dominant compliance boundary for telecommunication, networking and consumer electronics housings moulded from Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101 is flammability classification under UL 94. At a nominal wall thickness of 1.5 mm, general-purpose ABS 101 is typically classified HB. Designers must therefore avoid using the material in unattended mains-powered equipment where a V-2, V-1 or V-0 fire enclosure is required by IEC 62368-1 without conducting end-product testing or switching to a flame-retardant ABS variant. Rib and boss geometry must account for the HB rating: internal ribs should not exceed 60% of the nominal wall thickness to maintain consistent filling and to prevent sink marks that reduce electrical clearance through the enclosure. For router housings, set-top box covers and switch plates, melt temperature is set at 215°C to 240°C and mould temperature at 45°C to 70°C. Pre-drying at 80°C for 2 h to 3 h is required before processing because moisture above 0.05% increases surface haze and lowers dielectric strength. Injection speed is moderate to reduce shear-induced gloss variation on textured surfaces; screw forward time is extended and hold pressure is maintained at 45 MPa to 65 MPa to pack bosses with diameter-to-thickness ratios below 2.5:1. Shrinkage measured to ISO 294-4 ranges from 0.4% to 0.7%, which affects PCB support post alignment. For EMI shielding coatings, adhesion to ABS surfaces is a process limitation because the polymer surface is non-polar and has low wetting after mould release migration. Atmospheric plasma or UV-ozone treatment is applied before vacuum metallisation or conformal coating to raise surface energy above 40 mN/m; without treatment, peel adhesion in copper-nickel shielding layers fails after thermal cycling from −40°C to 85°C. The grade is suitable for RoHS compliance under Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II when pigmented with compliant masterbatches, but the batch certificate must confirm absence of lead, cadmium, mercury and hexavalent chromium above 0.1% by weight in homogeneous materials. If the part is to be marked for UL 94 HB, the minimum nominal thickness and colour concentration must be declared, because pigment type changes UL performance.

When ABS 101 replaces 20% glass-filled SAN in appliance control panel frames, which property limits direct substitution?

The substitution boundary is flexural modulus. General-purpose Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101 develops a lower stiffness than 20% glass-fibre-filled SAN, so control panel frames for washing machines, air-conditioner indoor units and refrigerator door end caps cannot be downgauged without structural re-verification. Where a glass-filled SAN part requires a flexural modulus above 5,500 MPa under ISO 178, ABS 101 is not a direct drop-in and rib depth, wall thickness or support spacing must be recalculated. In appliance control frames, the formulation approach is typically 100 phr ABS 101, 1 phr to 2 phr colour masterbatch, 0.1 phr to 0.3 phr internal lubricant and 0.1 phr to 0.5 phr antioxidant package. Filler loading above 3 phr is not recommended for high-gloss fascia parts because mineral filler reduces surface distinctness of image and increases mould deposit formation. For processing, drying at 80°C for 2 h to 3 h is mandatory. Barrel temperature profile is set from 210°C at the feed throat to 235°C at the nozzle; mould temperature of 50°C to 70°C is maintained by a water unit with turbulent flow above 5 l/min per circuit. Injection velocity is moderate-high to avoid premature freeze at the end of flow, followed by a hold pressure of 55 MPa to 70 MPa for 6 s to 10 s. Sink mark depth over standoffs is held below 0.02 mm by using gas-counterpressure or breathing mould only when customer specifications require Class A fascia surfaces. Appliance safety compliance is assessed under IEC 60335-1; for unattended appliances with glow-wire risk, unfilled ABS 101 is limited because the ignitability temperature under IEC 60695-2-11 may fall below the 650°C test temperature applied to enclosures that carry current above 0.2 A. In those cases, a flame-retardant ABS grade or additional insulation barrier is required. Cleaning-agent resistance must be tested with the specific end-use detergent because ABS 101 is sensitive to ketones, esters and chlorinated solvents; immersion in 10% sodium hydroxide at 60°C for 24 h is sometimes used as a screening condition but is not a universal substitute for customer chemical compatibility.

Electrodeposition adhesion prerequisites on butadiene-rich ABS etch surfaces

Decorative chrome-plated ABS parts such as automotive badges, appliance trim rings and plumbing fixture shells require controlled polybutadiene morphology in Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101. Electroplating-grade ABS generally contains 15 wt% to 25 wt% butadiene dispersed as discrete latex-grafted particles. The plating sequence begins with a chromic acid-sulphuric acid etch at 60°C to 70°C for 5 min to 15 min, typically containing 380 g/L to 420 g/L chromic acid and 380 g/L to 450 g/L sulphuric acid. The etch selectively oxidises butadiene nodules and creates microcavities that provide mechanical interlock for electroless metal. If ABS 101 is a general-purpose injection grade with lower butadiene content or non-uniform particle size, the etch may produce insufficient surface roughness and low peel adhesion. Before lot acceptance, a cross-hatch thermal-cycle adhesion test or pull-test per ASTM B604 should be performed, because published data for this specific configuration may be limited. After etching, the part is neutralised, immersed in a colloidal palladium-tin activation bath at 25°C to 35°C, and then coated with electroless nickel or electroless copper to a film thickness of 0.2 μm to 1.0 μm. The subsequent electroplating stack for exterior decorative service is copper at 20 μm to 30 μm, semi-bright nickel at 10 μm to 15 μm, bright nickel at 5 μm to 10 μm, microporous nickel at 1 μm to 2 μm, and chromium at 0.25 μm to 0.5 μm. Regrind content must be kept below 2% in electroplating lots because oxidised regrind particles create plate voids and adhesion failures. Mould release agents based on silicone are prohibited; if release is required, a hydrocarbon-free external release must be validated for etch wettability. The moulded substrate requires melt temperature of 220°C to 245°C and mould temperature of 50°C to 70°C to reduce orientation stress, because residual tensile stress at the surface accelerates etch cracking and creates local overplating. Compliance for chromic acid etch is governed by REACH authorisation for hexavalent chromium, so plating facilities must document emission control or use trivalent chromium etch alternatives only after adhesion is validated at production scale. Finished parts are tested for thermal shock resistance, often 3 cycles from −30°C to 80°C with 30 min dwell, and for CASS corrosion resistance per ISO 9227 where specified by automotive customers.

For injection-moulded toy vehicle bodies, construction blocks and board-game accessories, Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101 must be evaluated against EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 migration limits for Category II elements and against ASTM F963 mechanical safety requirements. The material is processed without phthalate plasticisers because ABS 101 reaches the required flow length through melt temperature, not additive plasticisation. This supports compliance with REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII entries 51 and 52, which restrict six phthalate esters in toys to 0.1% by mass of plasticised material. Pigment selection is critical because cadmium-based, lead-based and certain barium-containing colour masterbatches must be avoided in toy applications. Melt temperature is maintained at 205°C to 230°C to limit thermal degradation; residence time in the barrel should not exceed 8 min at full shot weight, and idle purging is required after interruptions longer than 15 min. Mould temperature of 35°C to 55°C is sufficient for high-gloss toy surfaces. Injection speed is high for thin-wall blocks but must be reduced at the end of fill to prevent flash in living-hinge areas. Hold pressure of 40 MPa to 60 MPa is applied for 3 s to 6 s. Drop impact testing under ASTM F963 is performed on moulded toy assemblies after conditioning at 23°C and −20°C; ABS 101 tends to exhibit brittle failure when notches or sharp corners exceed 0.2 mm radius. Sharp edges are a mechanical hazard and must be radiused in tooling. Extraction of residual acrylonitrile and styrene is not a standard toy requirement, but compound producers generally control residual monomers below 500 mg/kg each in food-contact ABS variants; toy-grade ABS 101 should be supported by a batch certificate for residual monomer and by a declaration of conformity for the finished article.

Solvent-welded DWV fitting production constraints under ASTM D2661 Schedule 40

In automated injection moulding of pipes and fittings for drain, waste and vent installations, Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101 is processed into Schedule 40 DWV fittings such as P-traps, couplings, sanitary tees, elbows and reducer bushes. The primary compliance anchors are ASTM D2661 for ABS DWV fittings and ASTM D3965 for ABS material cell classification. The extrusion and injection grades used for DWV must meet the cell class specified by the end product standard; for ABS pipe, ASTM D3965 designates physical property limits by cell number, including impact and tensile properties. Moulded fittings are dried at 80°C for 2 h to 4 h before processing. Melt temperature is set at 220°C to 250°C and mould temperature at 50°C to 80°C to reduce orientation and improve pressure-test performance. Gate design uses full-round or trapezoidal gates with land length below 1.0 mm and diameter at least 50% of local wall thickness to prevent freeze-off and sink marks in socket walls. Hold pressure of 60 MPa to 80 MPa is maintained until the gate freezes; screw position transfer should occur at 90% to 95% of shot volume. Cold slug wells are required in the runner system because ABS 101 has moderate melt viscosity and can retain degraded material in the nozzle tip after cycle interruptions. Socket dimensions must compensate for shrinkage of 0.4% to 0.7% because interference with mating pipe affects solvent-cement bond strength. For assembly, the solvent cement or primer must comply with ASTM D2235 for ABS solvent cement, and the pipe ends must be softened with a low-viscosity primer that contains methyl ethyl ketone and cyclohexanone. Bond strength after 24 h cure depends on socket depth, pipe end squareness and ambient temperature above 5°C. Hydrostatic test and longitudinal seam strength are evaluated according to the installation code, not by the raw material supplier. ABS 101 in DWV applications is not acceptable for pressure potable water unless the finished piping system is certified to NSF/ANSI 14 and applicable plumbing codes, and the specific lot must be listed in the certification database.

Double-walled clamshell housings for corded power drills, jigsaws and garden trimmer motor covers require controlled residual stress in Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101 because vibration amplitude and drop loading expose the moulded shell to fatigue and brittle failure. Wall thickness is maintained at 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm for hand-held power tools, with rib thickness limited to 50% of the adjacent wall and corner radii above 0.8 mm to reduce stress concentration. Pre-drying is performed at 80°C for 3 h to 4 h to a residual moisture below 0.05%. Melt temperature is set at 230°C to 250°C; mould temperature is held at 55°C to 70°C to reduce frozen-in orientation and improve notched impact performance. Injection speed is profiled to maintain a continuous flow front, with a hold pressure of 60 MPa to 80 MPa applied until gate seal. After ejection, annealing at 70°C to 80°C for 2 h is optional and is used only when residual stress measured by solvent craze testing reveals cracking in high-gate-stress zones. Drop testing under IEC 62841-1 or UL 62841 is performed on conditioned housings after 3 cycles of thermal shock from −40°C to 85°C. Unnotched Charpy impact strength under ISO 179-1/1eU is the relevant toughness metric for housing deformation, while notched Izod under ASTM D256 is used as a batch release check. Screw bosses for self-tapping screws must have an outer diameter at least 2.0 times the screw nominal diameter and a hole depth at least 2.5 times the screw diameter to prevent cracking in assembly. Thread-forming screws with a flank angle above 30° and low thread engagement are preferred over thread-cutting screws in ABS 101 housings. If the housing is overmoulded with a soft elastomer grip, the substrate must be free of mould release and the elastomer must be processed at an interface temperature above 180°C only if the two-component mould system allows chemical bonding; otherwise mechanical interlocks are required. The finished housing is tested for dimensional stability at 85°C after 1 h load. Power tool battery terminals and motor vents should not be formed from unfilled ABS 101 if the external surface exceeds 85°C during locked-rotor operation.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Lidong Plastic ABS 101 is an unfilled acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-moulding grade identified by a manufacturer-specific product code. The model designation ABS 101 does not indicate a filled system; no glass fibre, mineral reinforcement, or flame-retardant package is incorporated. The grade is supplied as cylindrical pellets with a nominal density of 1.04–1.07 g/cm³ as determined by ISO 1183-1:2019. In the absence of a controlled lot-specific certificate of analysis, the numerical values in this technical description are class-typical for unfilled general-purpose ABS rather than guaranteed product data. The polymer is a two-phase system in which a styrene-acrylonitrile matrix contains dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles. The SAN matrix controls modulus, surface hardness, and thermal resistance, while the rubber phase provides room-temperature impact energy absorption. Processing behaviour is therefore bounded by the thermal sensitivity of the polybutadiene phase, the hygroscopicity of the compound, and shear-induced heating associated with the screw configuration.

The product is positioned as a general-purpose grade for rigid injection-moulded parts requiring a balance of flow, impact retention, and moderate heat resistance. Compared with high-flow ABS grades used for thin-wall electronic housings, ABS 101 has higher melt viscosity. Compared with high-heat ABS grades used for automotive interior structural parts, it has a lower heat deflection temperature but a wider processing window. The selection difference is quantified in the comparative matrix later in this document.

What Processing Window Governs Injection Moulding Stability?

Pre-drying is the first independent process constraint. Pellet moisture should be reduced to below 0.05% by weight according to ISO 15512:2019. A desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -30 °C is recommended at 80–90 °C for 2–4 h. When ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, drying is mandatory rather than advisory. Insufficient drying produces splay, silver streaks, and variable surface gloss on the moulded part. Moisture also contributes to hydrolysis of lubricant packages and a broader melt-flow distribution.

Barrel zone settings are normally staged from 210 °C at the feed throat to 240 °C at the nozzle. Melt temperature should not remain above 250 °C for longer than 5 min, because polybutadiene degradation generates yellowing, brown streaking, and volatile degradation products. A single heat history at 240 °C with a residence time above 5 min can lower notched Izod impact by 5–10% relative to the dry virgin value, depending on screw recovery rate and hot-runner dead zones.

Mould surface temperature is maintained between 40 °C and 80 °C. Lower temperatures favour gloss reduction and faster cycle time but increase frozen-in orientation; higher temperatures reduce internal stress and improve solvent stress-crack resistance. Core-cavity temperature differentials above 10 °C are a common source of warpage in flat parts such as bezels and panels. Injection pressure on a 150-tonne hydraulic press with a 40 mm three-zone screw of L/D 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio 2.2:1 typically falls between 70 MPa and 120 MPa. Hold pressure is set at 50–70% of the peak injection pressure to pack the cavity without overpacking the gate.

Plastication settings should use a back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa and screw speed of 50–100 rpm. Higher back pressure improves melt homogeneity but increases shear heating; if melt temperature exceeds 245 °C at the nozzle, screw speed or back pressure should be reduced. Gate design interacts with the melt viscosity of ABS 101. Edge gates with land lengths of 0.5–1.0 mm and depths of 50–70% of the part wall are used to reduce jetting. Vent depths of 0.02–0.05 mm are recommended; deeper vents flash with ABS at typical packing pressures. Hot-runner tips should remain below 240 °C, and internal dead spots must be eliminated. In hot-runner systems, manifold temperatures above 245 °C accelerate degradation even if the nozzle temperature reading remains stable.

Regrind content is process-limited as well. Up to 20–30% regrind is commonly tolerated when clean and dry, but higher levels widen notched Izod variation and increase the frequency of black specks in light-coloured parts. The regrind threshold is discussed further as a process boundary because it shifts melt viscosity and cushion position.

Typical mechanical and thermal data for this product class are summarised in Table 1. The values are reference points for material selection, not guaranteed lot-specific minima. Specimens are moulded according to ISO 294-1:2017 and conditioned at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity for 40 h before testing unless the test method specifies otherwise.

The data in Table 1 represent equilibrium or short-term mechanical values. Creep and fatigue performance are not included. Under sustained load, ABS 101 should not be used at temperatures above 60 °C because creep modulus declines more rapidly above this point. At 80 °C under 5 MPa tensile stress, creep rate may become unacceptable for precision housings. The practical continuous-use temperature is therefore lower than the heat deflection temperature.

Comparative Position of ABS 101 Among Unfilled Injection Grades

The selection difference between ABS 101 and adjacent materials is expressed through melt flow rate, heat deflection temperature, and notched Izod impact. Table 2 presents class-typical ranges; the exact Dongguan Lidong Plastic lot values must be confirmed because lot-to-lot variation in rubber concentration can alter impact by ±3 kJ/m².

Production use of ABS 101 is concentrated in appliance housings, consumer electronics enclosures, and non-structural automotive interior trim. The grade is not normally selected for parts with nominal wall thickness below 1.2 mm unless flow leaders or multiple gates are added, because the higher melt viscosity relative to high-flow ABS raises injection pressure demand and residual gate stress. For vacuum cleaner bodies, monitor bezels, and air-conditioner front panels, a flow-length-to-thickness ratio below 120:1 is used to reduce short-shot frequency and burn-mark formation. Weld-line strength in multi-gate tools is typically 40–60% of the virgin notched Izod value measured under ISO 180:2023, so gate positions should be located away from snap-fit roots or screw bosses. Batch-to-batch melt flow variation of ±3 g/10 min has been observed in comparable unfilled ABS grades; this is sufficient to alter screw recovery time and cushion position on fast-cycle packaging machines.

For electronic enclosures requiring a UL 94 V-0 rating, ABS 101 is not the appropriate grade unless an external flame-retardant coating is applied; the unfilled grade is usually rated HB at 1.5 mm. This is a primary selection difference from flame-retardant ABS grades. Electrical tracking resistance and glow-wire behaviour should be verified separately under IEC 60112 and IEC 60695-2-11 where the end-use standard requires them.

Post-moulding operations such as ultrasonic welding and solvent bonding are possible with ABS 101 but require joint design suited to a rigid amorphous polymer. Ultrasonic weld parameters must control amplitude to avoid surface degradation. Solvent bonding with methyl ethyl ketone is effective but introduces the same chemical-resistance limitation associated with ketones: residual stress can initiate environmental stress cracking in the SAN matrix. Mechanical fasteners and snap-fits are preferred when repeated disassembly is required.

Chemical compatibility is limited mainly by environmental stress cracking of the SAN matrix. Continuous contact with ketones, esters, chlorinated solvents, or aromatic hydrocarbons is not recommended. Direct food-contact status is not established for this grade; lot-specific certification would be required under FDA 21 CFR 180.22 or the applicable national regulation. RoHS verification is not automatic and should be performed by IEC 62321 analysis for lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE.

    When Regrind Ratios Exceed 30%

The threshold of 30% regrind is a process boundary rather than a compositional one. Repeated thermal history increases the melt flow rate and reduces rubber-phase toughening efficiency. In general-purpose ABS, notched Izod impact typically decreases by 5–10% at 30% regrind and by 15–25% at 50% regrind, although published data for this specific Dongguan Lidong Plastic grade is limited. Melt flow rate tends to rise by 2–5 g/10 min after three heat histories because chain scission in the SAN phase lowers molecular weight. The practical consequence is that a moulding window established for virgin pellets will not produce identical cushion, peak pressure, and pack behaviour with high-regrind blends.

When high regrind levels are unavoidable, the material should be recompounded on a vented twin-screw extruder with L/D 28:1 to 36:1 and a vacuum port below -0.08 MPa to remove volatile degradation products. Screen packs of 100–150 mesh are used to trap black specks and unmelted rubber agglomerates. Even with recompounding, the drying requirement remains: regrind is more hygroscopic than virgin pellets because its surface area is larger after grinding. Drying at 80 °C for 4 h is commonly required before the recompounded feed is introduced to the injection-moulding hopper. When the proportion of recompounded material exceeds 30%, the lot should be re-qualified for notched Izod impact and melt flow rate using ISO 180:2023 and ISO 1133-1:2022 before production.
