Application of Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920

In low-emission vehicle interior programmes, Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920 is evaluated as an intermediate-flow acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer for injection moulding of HVAC ducting, glove-box frames, centre console lower panels, seat side trims, and air vent louvres. Material qualification begins with designation verification under ISO 2580-1, followed by volatile organic compound and fogging measurement under VDA 278:2011 and DIN 75201:2011 method B, and interior flammability under FMVSS 302. Supplier-published data for this specific configuration are limited; therefore the processing envelope in this scenario is derived from standard ABS injection-moulding practice and must be confirmed against the certificate of analysis before tool start-up. Production batches are pre-dried in desiccant dryers with a dew point of −40 °C to a moisture content below 0.05 wt%, the threshold at which splay and silver streaking on visible grain surfaces remain negligible in conventional cold-runner tools. Where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60% RH, the open-hopper residence time for dried pellets is limited to 20 min because the surface of heated ABS 920 re-adsorbs atmospheric moisture rapidly in high-humidity plant environments.

Formulation for grained black lower trim uses ABS 920 as the continuous matrix at 100 phr, a heat stabilizer package at 0.3 phr to 0.6 phr, an acid scavenger at 0.1 phr to 0.3 phr, a colour masterbatch at 1.5 wt% to 2.5 wt%, and an external lubricant at 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt%. Reprilled sprue and runner material is introduced at no more than 20 wt%; above this level, batch-to-batch viscosity variation widens, and notched Charpy impact strength under ISO 179-1:2020 declines measurably. Moulding is performed on hydraulic or servoelectric injection machines from 90 t to 150 t clamp force, with barrel set points of 190 °C, 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 240 °C, a nozzle set point of 230 °C, and a mould temperature of 40 °C to 60 °C. Fill speed is held between 20 mm/s and 60 mm/s; hold pressure is maintained at 30 MPa to 50 MPa for 2 s to 6 s after switchover from injection to holding phase. Cavity pressure transducers are located near the last-filled radius of the glove-box frame tool to record peak cavity pressure and confirm packing consistency; a screw L/D ratio of 20:1 to 22:1 is sufficient for single-resin moulding, while press-side masterbatch addition requires a static mixing nozzle to prevent colour streaks on textured surfaces. Terminal components produced under this protocol include cabin air ducting with wall thicknesses from 1.8 mm to 2.5 mm, glove-box frames, lower centre console panels, seat side trim covers, and adjustable air vent louvres. On multi-cavity tools, cavity-to-cavity mass deviation is controlled within 0.3% by balancing hot-runner manifold temperatures, because uncontrolled shear heating above 250 °C triggers polybutadiene-phase degradation. ABS 920 is not recommended for visible upper instrument panels subject to continuous heat aging above 90 °C; those applications are better served by PC/ABS or PVC-film-covered ABS.

Which Glow-Wire Pass Requirements Apply to ABS 920 Appliance Control Housings?

Appliance control panel housings and front console frames for washing machines, dishwashers, microwave control bezels, and refrigerator upper covers are produced from ABS 920 only when the electrical safety assessment confirms that glow-wire ignition temperature requirements do not exceed the ignition profile of unreinforced ABS. Under IEC 60335-1:2020 clause 30.2, unattended appliance parts carrying current above 0.2 A require a glow-wire test at 650 °C; parts that may be exposed to higher thermal stress or are not shielded by adequate material thickness can be required to pass 750 °C. For 850 °C glow-wire or UL 94 V-0 fire enclosure requirements, a designated flame-retarded ABS or PC/ABS is substituted, because unreinforced ABS 920 does not self-extinguish after a flaming ignition source is removed. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Annex XVII govern pigment metals, stabilizer metals, and brominated flame retardants; supplier declarations are reviewed for cadmium below 100 ppm and lead below 1000 ppm where permitted by the relevant clause. The production control plan records melt-flow index of each lot according to ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220 °C with a 10 kg applied mass.

The compound for appliance fascia parts uses ABS 920 at 85 wt% to 93 wt% as the base resin, a white or metallic-effect masterbatch at 3 wt% to 5 wt%, a hindered amine light stabilizer at 0.2 wt% to 0.5 wt%, and a processing aid at 0.3 wt% to 0.8 wt%. For matte control-panel surfaces, a 0.5 wt% to 1.5 wt% low-gloss additive may be included, but the modified compound is validated for dishwasher detergent resistance according to ISO 175:2021 before production release. Regrind from sprues and rejected facias is kept below 20 wt% to control melt-flow drift and weld-line strength. The material is pre-dried at 85 °C for 3 h in closed-loop desiccant dryers to a moisture content below 0.05 wt%. Moulding is conducted on 350 t to 600 t clamp-force machines with hot-runner valve-gate systems and polished steel cores; barrel temperatures are set at 210 °C to 240 °C and the nozzle at 235 °C. Cold mould surfaces at 45 °C to 65 °C are used for gloss control, with cooling time adjusted for wall thicknesses of 2.0 mm to 2.8 mm. Screw rotation is held at 60 rpm to 90 rpm, and back pressure at 0.5 MPa to 1.5 MPa stabilizes melt density. Short-shot studies establish fill pressure, and part mass is monitored to ±0.15% after 24 h annealing at 70 °C for panel flatness. Terminal finished parts include washing machine detergent drawer fronts, dishwasher control bezels, microwave door bottom trims, and refrigerator water-dispenser lower covers.

Because low-voltage business machine enclosures, cable management brackets, and adapter shells classify differently under IEC 62368-1:2023 fire enclosure rules than appliance parts, Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920 is used only after evaluation of the electrical power source and available fire containment volume. For non-fire enclosure components, or where the equipment power remains below the PS2 circuit limit and the material forms a decorative outer shell, unreinforced ABS 920 can be injection moulded into cable-management brackets, router base covers, monitor stand cable covers, and low-voltage adapter housings. However, for wall thicknesses below 1.2 mm and for enclosures requiring UL 94 V-1 or V-0, the non-flame-retarded grade is not suitable; a PC/ABS or FR-ABS grade is selected. Compliance documentation assembles IEC 62368-1:2023 clause 6.4 for fire enclosures, IEC 61340-5-1 for electrostatic discharge protected areas, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU with amendment (EU) 2015/863, and WEEE 2012/19/EU for end-of-life marking. In electrostatic-sensitive production environments, surface resistivity of the moulded ABS 920 part is measured according to IEC 62631-3-2; unreinforced ABS 920 typically exceeds 1012 Ω without antistatic additive, so static dissipative applications require an antistatic masterbatch and lot-specific validation.

Where dimensional stability is required, ABS 920 is compounded at 100 phr with a mineral filler at 3 phr to 8 phr, an antistatic masterbatch at 5 phr to 10 phr when surface resistivity between 109 Ω and 1011 Ω is specified, and a processing lubricant at 0.3 phr to 0.7 phr. Filler addition above 8 phr reduces impact strength and increases mould shrinkage anisotropy; below 3 phr, warpage on long thin cable covers may exceed 0.8% of part length. Thin-wall moulding of adapters and brackets is run on 80 t to 180 t injection machines with accumulator-assisted injection to maintain fill velocity above 150 mm/s for wall sections of 1.0 mm to 1.8 mm. Melt temperature is limited to 220 °C to 245 °C; mould temperature is maintained at 40 °C to 70 °C with turbulent water channels. Gas counter-pressure or sequential valve gating is applied for moulded-in snap fits to reduce jetting and weld-line depth. Screws with L/D ratios of 22:1 to 24:1 and compression ratios of 2.5:1 are used; pellet drying at 80 °C for 3 h to below 0.05% moisture is mandatory. Terminal formats are monitor stand covers, router base plates, network switch blanking panels, power adapter shells below 2.0 mm wall, and cable raceway clips.

Toy Safety Migration Limits and ABS 920 Masterbatch Constraints

Migration and heavy-metal constraints dominate the use of ABS 920 in injection-moulded toy shells because the material is in direct and frequent skin contact. Under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021, soluble element migration is classified by material category and body uptake; cadmium, lead, barium, chromium, arsenic, antimony, mercury, selenium, and aluminium are screened in the first production lot and periodically thereafter. ASTM F963-23 mandates soluble heavy metal analysis by test methods referenced in the standard, and REACH Annex XVII restricts phthalate plasticizers to 0.1 wt% per plasticised material. ABS 920 is not plasticised in these formulations; phthalate compliance is verified on the finished article, not on the resin supply alone. Pigment selection is controlled by a positive list excluding lead chromate, cadmium sulphoselenide, and mercury sulphide masterbatches.

The toy shell compound uses ABS 920 at 96 wt% to 98 wt%, colour masterbatch at 2 wt% to 4 wt%, hindered amine light stabilizer at 0.1 wt% to 0.3 wt%, and slip additive at 0.1 wt% to 0.2 wt%. The masterbatch carrier is selected from the same ABS family to avoid phase separation; masterbatch viscosity is matched to the base resin within ±8% of melt-flow index to prevent visible flow fronts on multi-cavity blocks. Injection moulding of building blocks and toy shells is performed at lower melt temperatures of 200 °C to 220 °C to protect the polybutadiene segment from thermal oxidation; mould temperatures are 30 °C to 50 °C. Clamp force on multi-cavity block tools ranges from 120 t to 250 t, with cavity counts from 8 to 64 depending part size. Pre-drying is at 75 °C to 80 °C for 3 h to a moisture content below 0.03 wt%. For two-shot soft-touch edges, a styrenic thermoplastic elastomer is overmoulded at the same mould temperature, but the ABS 920 substrate must not exceed 60 °C at the interface to prevent cohesive failure at the bond line. Terminal finished goods include interlocking building blocks, action figure shells, ride-on body panels, shape-sorting toys, and learning-tablet frames.

When Solvent Cement Bonding Governs ABS 920 DWV Fittings

In solvent-welded drainage networks, ABS 920 is converted into drainage, waste, and vent fittings where solvent cement joint integrity and low-temperature impact resistance are the dominant process variables. Material certification follows ASTM D2661-21 for ABS Schedule 40 DWV pipe and fittings, and ISO 15493:2003 for industrial ABS piping components; resin lot testing includes cell classification under ASTM D3965-21 for ABS piping materials. In North American code applications, NSF/ANSI 14 certification may be required for municipal acceptance. The grade is not suitable for pressure water service; only DWV and non-pressure chemical drainage lines are addressed by the referenced standards. Storage and application are limited to pH-neutral and non-oxidizing aqueous drainage; contact with ketones, esters, and chlorinated solvents is avoided except during controlled solvent cementing.

The fitting compound consists of ABS 920 at 100 phr, a titanium dioxide white concentrate at 1 phr to 3 phr, a process stabilizer at 0.2 phr to 0.5 phr, and an external lubricant at 0.3 phr to 0.8 phr. Regrind from sprues and rejected fittings is added at 15 wt% to 25 wt%, but granulate must be free of metal contamination from in-line grinding and is passed through a 4 mm screen before reintroduction. Fillers are kept below 5 phr because excessive filler reduces solvent cement penetration and lowers hydrostatic burst strength. Injection moulding of tees, bends, P-traps, and couplings is performed on 180 t to 350 t machines with core-pull and unscrewing mechanisms for threaded sockets. Melt temperature is controlled at 190 °C to 230 °C; mould temperature is maintained at 35 °C to 60 °C because thick socket sections require slower cooling to prevent sink marks. The screw is a general-purpose design with L/D 20:1 to 22:1 and back pressure at 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa. After moulding, sockets are joined by solvent cementing with ABS solvent cement complying with ASTM D2235; hydrostatic burst testing of fittings is performed according to the code-referenced test. Terminal finished goods include DWV bends, wyes, P-traps, pipe couplings, floor-drain rings, and sink tailpieces.

Coextruded Polycarbonate/ABS 920 Luggage Shells Under Cyclic Impact

To lower melt viscosity in polycarbonate-rich luggage sheet without sacrificing cold-temperature notched impact strength, ABS 920 is blended into a polycarbonate continuous phase at 30 wt% to 40 wt%, with polycarbonate at 60 wt% to 70 wt% and a phosphite stabilizer package at 0.1 phr to 0.5 phr. The blend is not a simple melt mix; moisture control is tighter than for neat ABS because polycarbonate hydrolyzes above 0.02 wt% moisture, so both resins are dried at 90 °C for 4 h in desiccant dryers with dew point below −40 °C before extrusion. Compliance for finished luggage shells includes ISO 4892-2 for accelerated weathering, ISO 105-B02 for lightfastness, and REACH Annex XVII for restricted substances; airline baggage dimensional controls are commercial rather than polymer test standards.

Sheet extrusion is run on a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1 to 32:1, barrier screw and flat die at 240 °C to 270 °C; the melt is polished on a three-roll stack with roll temperatures from 80 °C to 100 °C. Extruded sheet of 1.8 mm to 3.0 mm wall is thermoformed at 180 °C to 210 °C with plug-assisted pre-stretch into shell halves; corner thinning below 0.8 mm is rejected by ultrasonic thickness verification. The moulded shells are trimmed on CNC routers, and injection-moulded ABS 920 frame components are assembled by mechanical fastening rather than solvent bonding to avoid stress cracking at hinge points. Terminal formats are hard-shell luggage cases, protective equipment shells, and instrument transport cases. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and low-temperature drop testing is mandatory before release of hard-shell designs below −20 °C.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920 is a pelletized acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene formulation supplied by Dongguan Hongsheng. The grade number 920 is a manufacturer-specific identifier and does not correspond to a standardized ISO 2580-1 data block; it should not be interpreted as a direct statement of melt flow, impact resistance, or heat resistance. Verification of the certificate of analysis and the technical datasheet is therefore required before process parameters are fixed. As with other ABS terpolymers, the material is expected to consist of a styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer continuous phase with dispersed polybutadiene rubber particles, but the acrylonitrile content, rubber particle size distribution, and grafting efficiency are supplier-controlled and can shift with production lot. Feedstock identity should be confirmed by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy or differential scanning calorimetry against a reference sample when substitution risk exists. The product is supplied in pellet form for melt-processing operations such as injection molding and extrusion; external lubricants, processing aids, or color concentrates can modify melt viscosity and weld-line strength, so trial work should use the production-intended masterbatch loading rather than natural resin alone.

Material Handling and Drying Requirements in Humid Production Environments

ABS resins in this flow class are hygroscopic enough that moisture removal is a processing prerequisite, not a cosmetic recommendation. A dehumidifying dryer with a delivered-air dew point below -35 °C and a drying hopper inlet temperature of 80 °C to 90 °C is typically used for 2 h to 4 h. Residual moisture should be held below 0.1 wt% as measured by ISO 15512 or ASTM D6980. At higher moisture levels, vaporization at the melt front generates splay, silver streaks, and a measurable loss in weld-line impact strength. The dryer should be assessed at the hopper inlet rather than at the regeneration blower, since air leaks and saturated desiccant can raise the delivered dew point above setpoint. In plants where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%, open containers should be charged into sealed surge hoppers within 30 min, and any regrind fraction above 20 wt% should be dried separately because its higher surface area and variable bulk density alter residence-time distribution in the hopper. Pellet appearance is not a reliable indicator of dryness; splay-causing moisture levels are not visually detectable.

Because ABS melts are pseudoplastic, rheological characterization should be performed under ISO 1133-1:2022 or ASTM D1238, with the exact temperature and load stated on the datasheet. Melt volume-flow rate values reported at 220 °C with a 10 kg load are common for ABS, but datasheets may use 230 °C/3.8 kg. The two results are not convertible by a fixed factor; conversion requires melt density and shear-rate correction. For injection molding, general-purpose ABS is often processed with a melt temperature measured at the nozzle between 210 °C and 240 °C. Mold temperature is generally maintained between 40 °C and 70 °C, with higher mold temperatures within that range used when gloss, knit-line strength, or thin-wall filling is critical. A barrel profile with a flat or slightly rising rear-to-front temperature distribution is used, while the nozzle is usually set 5 °C to 10 °C below the front zone to reduce drool. Screw rotation speed should be set to a peripheral speed of 0.3 m/s to 0.5 m/s on screws in the 25 mm to 40 mm diameter range. Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920 may require setpoints outside these class-typical windows if the grade contains recycled resin, flame-retardant additives, or a high butadiene content. A direct melt-temperature reading with a needle pyrometer is recommended during start-up because shear heating can raise actual melt temperature 10 °C to 15 °C above the barrel setpoint at high screw recovery speeds.

Which Material Data Should Be Verified Before Mold Trials?

A complete datasheet for Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920 should describe the test method, conditioning history, and specimen preparation for each reported value. The following test designations are relevant for ABS molding grades; their numerical limits must be obtained from the supplier, not inferred from generic ABS literature.

Flammability classUL 94 HB or VRequired for appliance electrical enclosures and consumer electronics

For appliance housings, electrical enclosures, and non-structural automotive interior parts, validation should include tensile tests on specimens cut parallel and perpendicular to flow under ISO 527-2, notched Izod tests at 23 °C and -30 °C under ISO 180/A, and a thermal aging study if continuous exposure exceeds 60 °C. For electrical enclosures, a UL 94 rating at the minimum wall thickness of the production part must be confirmed; a rating obtained on 3.0 mm specimens does not automatically apply to 1.5 mm walls. Weld lines should be created using the production gate configuration and tested in impact and flexure, because weld-line strength can be 30% to 50% lower than bulk strength depending on melt temperature and gas venting. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; the molder should therefore run a design-of-experiments matrix covering melt temperature, mold temperature, holding pressure, and gate size before releasing the part.

When Hot-Runner Molds Are Used with Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920

Hot-runner processing introduces additional thermal and residence-time constraints. The manifold and each nozzle should be controlled as separate zones with a measured temperature variation no greater than ±5 °C; larger variations produce cavity-to-cavity filling weight differences and visible gloss bands. Gate lands should be sized to limit shear rate at the gate to approximately 40,000 s⁻¹, because excessive shear at high melt temperature can yellow the SAN continuous phase. For a wall thickness of 2.0 mm, typical gate land lengths are 0.8 mm to 1.0 mm. Switchover from velocity-controlled filling to pressure-controlled packing should occur at 95% to 98% of total part volume; later switchover can overpack ribs and cause ejection difficulty. Holding pressure is generally set at 50% to 70% of the peak injection pressure, with enough hold time to freeze the gate and to bring part weight variation below 0.3%. If valve gates are used, pin movement should be checked for leakage; a leaking valve gate can generate degraded material that appears as brown or black specks. For sequential valve gating of large panels, the first gate to open should remain open long enough to fill 25% to 35% of the projected area before the next gate opens; opening gates too late can create hesitation lines and poor knit strength at the flow junction. These values are class-typical for ABS and should be adjusted with actual melt-pressure data collected from production tooling.

After ejection, post-molding shrinkage continues as the part cools to ambient conditions. Shrinkage measurements should be taken after 48 h at standard atmosphere 23 °C and 50% RH under ISO 294-4, not immediately after ejection. Class-typical ABS shrinkage ranges from 0.3% to 0.8%, with lower values along flow and higher values across flow. If tight tolerances must be held, a cavity-pressure curve should be recorded and used to maintain consistent switchover and packing.

When post-industrial regrind is incorporated, the processing window narrows. Regrind fraction up to 20 wt% is common for appearance parts, while up to 30 wt% can be used for hidden structural components if the regrind is dust-free and dried to the same moisture specification as virgin resin. Each regrind addition can lower melt viscosity and shift the transition from velocity-controlled to pressure-controlled filling; processors should re-run the viscosity curve rather than assuming a linear dilution effect. Batch-to-batch variation in the regrind fraction should be controlled by gravimetric dosing at the throat, not by volumetric “sprinkle-in” methods. A loss-in-weight feeder with a feed-rate deviation below 1% of setpoint is recommended when tight dimensional tolerance or color consistency is required. If the regrind contains hot-stamped or painted parts, contamination can cause gas generation and delamination; such regrind should be evaluated for ash content under ISO 3451-1 and for melt filtration pressure before use.

    Comparing ABS 920 with High-Flow, High-Impact, and High-Heat Formulations

Direct numerical comparisons are valid only when specimen preparation, conditioning, and test methods are identical. High-flow extrusion and thin-wall grades can exhibit melt volume-flow rates of 20 cm³/10 min to 40 cm³/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg, while general-purpose injection grades may fall between 5 cm³/10 min and 15 cm³/10 min. High-impact grades often show notched Izod values above 30 kJ/m² at 23 °C but typically lose tensile modulus and heat resistance. High-heat grades containing α-methylstyrene or N-substituted maleimide comonomers can raise Vicat softening temperatures above 110 °C, but their melt temperatures are generally 20 °C to 30 °C higher and their flow length is lower at the same injection pressure. Electroplating-specific ABS grades may be produced with controlled butadiene particle size distribution to facilitate uniform chromic acid etching; such grades are not automatically interchangeable with general-purpose ABS 920. Without the supplier’s data block, the 920 suffix cannot be used to place the material in a specific flow-impact-heat category. The most reliable difference assessment is a side-by-side molding trial in the production tool using identical gate and runner dimensions, followed by mechanical testing in the same orientation and at the same conditioning atmosphere under ISO 291.

Thermal degradation of the polybutadiene phase is the primary process boundary. Residence time in the barrel should be kept below 5 min at melt temperatures above 240 °C; longer residence or hot spots can generate yellowing, odor, and a measurable decline in impact strength. Purging should be performed with a viscous polyethylene or a dedicated ABS purge compound, not with PVC or acetal, because overheated PVC releases hydrogen chloride and acetal can degrade exothermically with formaldehyde generation. If the machine is to be idle for more than 20 min, barrel temperatures should be reduced to 150 °C to 170 °C or the barrel should be purged and isolated from oxygen. In hot-runner systems, shutdown without purging can leave stagnant melt in the manifold; during restart, the first portions should be discarded until the melt appears uniform and no black specks are visible. A purge-compatibility check on a small-scale injection unit is recommended when Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920 is introduced into a plant that previously ran amorphous or semi-crystalline resins, because residual nylon or polycarbonate can cause delamination at the phase interface.
