Application of Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920-555

Injection moulding of Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920-555 into automotive interior trim begins with desiccant drying at 80°C for 3–4 h until residual moisture is below 0.05 wt% by ISO 15512:2019. Lot-specific property data must be read from the supplier certificate of analysis; published data for this specific configuration is limited, and the processing ranges below are industrial starting points valid only where the corresponding test method or equipment class is identified. The melt temperature at the nozzle is held between 230°C and 250°C on a hydraulic clamp unit with a 20:1 to 24:1 L/D general-purpose screw. Mould temperature is controlled from 50°C to 70°C through turbulent water channels. A/B/C pillar covers, door waist trim, steering column shrouds, HVAC vent vanes, and instrument-panel lower trim are produced at wall thicknesses from 2.0 mm to 2.8 mm. Fill time on a 120 t clamp unit is typically 0.8–1.5 s, and hold pressure is set at 45–65 MPa hydraulic for 4–8 s. Overpacking at the gate is avoided because it raises internal stress and produces gate blush on grained cavies. The heat resistance boundary is set by ISO 75-2 at 1.80 MPa; general-purpose ABS grades commonly show HDT values between 85°C and 95°C. Dark upper dash surfaces may exceed this temperature under solar load, so ABS 920-555 is restricted to lower interior parts unless a heat-resistant grade is verified. Flammability of the finished part is tested according to FMVSS 302 or ISO 3795 because automotive interior materials are required to meet burn-rate limits of 100 mm/min or less. Fogging behaviour is screened by DIN 75201-B and volatile emissions by VDA 278; these tests are run on the moulded part after any post-mould painting or coating. The melt flow rate is determined under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C/10 kg and is used only as a starting point for fill-time calculation, not as a substitute for spiral-flow mould trials. Tensile yield stress is checked under ISO 527-2:2012 using a Type 1A specimen, and notched Izod impact is checked under ISO 180:2023 at 23°C. The terminal parts include unpainted pillar covers, door trim substrates, HVAC vent housings, and steering column shroud halves.

Thin-Wall Electronic Enclosures and the Flow-Length to Wall-Thickness Ratio

USB charger shells, router bottom covers, computer-keyboard upper cases, and mouse top shells are moulded from ABS 920-555 with nominal wall thickness between 1.2 mm and 1.8 mm. The flow-length to wall-thickness ratio is a critical variable; on a 1.5 mm wall, spiral flow data under ASTM D3123-09 should be generated before tooling release. Drying is performed at 80°C for 2–4 h to a residual moisture level not exceeding 0.02 wt%; higher moisture produces splay on thin-wall surfaces and reduces weld-line strength. Melt temperature is set at 220–250°C, measured at the nozzle with an immersion pyrometer. The mould is held at 40–60°C. Fill time on an electric injection machine of 100–150 t clamp force is shortened to 0.3–0.8 s using high injection velocity. The pack-and-hold stage uses 30–50 MPa for 2–5 s, followed by cooling time of 10–18 s. Bosses and snap-fit features are gated through a sequential valve-gate system; unrestricted melt flow around thin walls creates jetting and knit-line weakness at flow-front meeting points. Vents are cut to a depth of 0.02–0.04 mm and a land length of 1.5–3.0 mm. P20 or H13 tool steel with conformal cooling near thick sections reduces differential shrinkage and warpage. The finished enclosure is tested for impact by ISO 180:2023 at 23°C and for dimensional stability after 24 h at 60°C under IEC 62368-1:2020. Flammability classification is a limiting factor: general-purpose ABS 920-555 in neat form is normally expected to meet UL 94 HB; enclosures requiring V-0 at 1.5 mm require a flame-retardant ABS variant or a fire-enclosure separation design. The terminal components are wall-plug charger housings, router lower shells, keyboard top covers, and computer-mouse shells.

What Pack-Pressure Profile Prevents Sink Marks in High-Gloss Fascia?

The refrigerator door end cap, air-conditioner front panel, and washing-machine control bezel are moulded with gloss measured at 60° geometry under ISO 2813:2014. High-gloss surfaces require an SPI A-1 or A-2 mould finish and a mould temperature from 60°C to 80°C. The melt is kept at 230–250°C. A two-stage pack profile is applied: hold pressure starts at 45–55 MPa for the first 2–3 s, then drops to 25–35 MPa for 4–6 s, with total cooling time of 15–25 s at a wall thickness of 2.5 mm. This profile prevents sink marks behind bosses and standoffs because the lower second-stage pressure allows the gate to seal without excessive internal stress. Colour masterbatch is introduced at 2–3 wt% letdown with an ABS carrier; higher additions above 4 wt% reduce surface gloss and weaken knit lines. Colour difference is controlled under ISO 11664-4 to a ΔE of less than 1.0 CIELAB unit across the lot. Mould cooling channels are designed for turbulent water flow with Reynolds number above 10000; laminar flow causes hot spots, gloss variation, and inconsistent shrinkage. The moulded part is checked for tensile yield stress by ISO 527-2:2012 using a Type 1A specimen and for notched Izod impact by ISO 180:2023. Conformity for appliance safety must be completed under IEC 60335-1; the material must also satisfy RoHS 2011/65/EU Annex II and REACH 1907/2006 candidate-list screening. The terminal products are control-panel bezels, refrigerator door caps, and indoor air-conditioner front panels.

For hard-shell luggage and instrument case parts, ABS 920-555 is first converted into extruded sheet with a thickness from 1.5 mm to 4.0 mm. The sheet line uses a single-screw extruder with 30:1 L/D, a barrier screw, and a melt pump to reduce pulsation. Barrel temperatures are profiled from 180°C at the feed throat to 210–230°C at the adapter and die. The three-roll stack is run with the first roll at 75°C, the middle roll at 90°C, and the lower roll at 85°C. The sheet is then thermoformed on a single-station machine using ceramic IR heaters; the sheet surface is brought to 150–180°C and verified with a non-contact pyrometer. The aluminium mould is held at 70–85°C. Vacuum is applied at -0.07 MPa to -0.09 MPa; plug assist speed is set between 150 mm/s and 250 mm/s, depending on draw depth. Deep-draw areas must be checked against plug material temperature limits because local surface cooling below 140°C produces chilling stress and whitening. After forming, the shell is trimmed on a five-axis CNC router with a vacuum fixture; dust extraction is mandatory because ABS swarf is combustible under high heat flux. Impact resistance is verified on the finished formed skin by ISO 180:2023 at 23°C; low-temperature drop tests are run after conditioning at -20°C for 4 h. The material must satisfy REACH 1907/2006 and RoHS 2011/65/EU for electronic instrument cases if the case contains electrical components. The terminal products are hard-shell luggage shells, instrument case skins, and protective equipment housings.

When ABS 920-555 Is Run on Single-Screw Lines for DWV Pipe and Edge Banding

When the grade is run on a single-screw extruder for DWV pipe, the screw should have a barrier section and an L/D of at least 25:1. Barrel temperatures are set from 175°C at the feed zone to 200–225°C at the metering zone and die. A screen pack of 40/60/80 mesh is installed before the die; vacuum venting is operated at -0.05 MPa to -0.08 MPa to remove volatiles. The pipe is sized in a vacuum calibration tank at -0.05 MPa to -0.07 MPa, with water temperatures of 30–55°C. Wall thickness is controlled to the tolerance of ASTM D2661 for schedule-40 DWV pipe. The resin should not be processed above 240°C for extended residence time because butadiene domains degrade and the melt yellows. Injection-moulded fittings from the same lot use a melt temperature of 210–240°C and a mould temperature of 50–65°C. At the pipe-to-fitting joint, solvent cement selected under ASTM D2235 must be checked for compatibility with the specific grade; cement systems based on methyl ethyl ketone and acetone can cause stress crazing in high-cold-flow fittings. Continuous service is limited to non-pressure drainage below 60°C; the material is not suitable for hot-water pressure piping, compressed air, aromatic hydrocarbons, esters, or ketones. Edge banding produced from ABS 920-555 is extruded at 0.4–3.0 mm thickness and enters an embossing roll before wind-up. The terminal products are DWV pipe, injection-moulded fittings, and furniture edge-banding trim.

Building blocks, board-game tokens, and doll furniture parts are moulded from ABS 920-555 with wall thicknesses from 1.5 mm to 3.0 mm. The melt temperature is held at 210–240°C; the mould is water-heated to 40–60°C. No release agent is used unless the release agent has been evaluated for toy compliance under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 migration limits for 19 elements. Colour masterbatch is restricted to pigments that meet the same EN 71-3 elemental migration limits and the applicable REACH Annex XVII entries for cadmium, lead, and phthalates. Regrind is not used in toy applications unless the converter can demonstrate lot traceability and contaminant absence under Article 9 of the Toy Safety Directive 2009/48/EC. The finished article is checked for small parts with the 31.7 mm cylinder under ISO 8124-1:2022 or EN 71-1:2014+A1:2018; components that fit entirely inside the cylinder are forbidden for children under 3 years unless they are part of a larger assembly that is permanently attached. Mechanical testing includes tension and impact according to ISO 8124-1:2022, torque and drop tests per ASTM F963-23, and dimensional checks after 24 h conditioning at 23°C and 50% relative humidity. The material must also comply with CPSIA Section 108 on phthalates where applicable. The terminal products are building blocks, game tokens, and doll furniture panels.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920-555 is a pelletised styrene-acrylonitrile-butadiene copolymer grade positioned for injection moulding and selected extrusion operations. The material falls within the ABS classification system of ISO 2580-1; when type-testing is required, specimen preparation should follow ISO 2580-2. The designation 920-555 is a manufacturer-defined trade number and does not, by itself, indicate a universal flow class, impact level, or thermal index across regional distribution channels. Publicly available grade-specific engineering data for this exact Hongsheng designation remain limited; the process windows and reference values below are therefore derived from documented ABS copolymer performance and must be confirmed against the batch certificate of analysis before tooling is cut.

Supply form is typically natural or coloured pellets in 25 kg sacks or 500–1000 kg bulk containers. Storage should be at 10–30 °C and ≤60% relative humidity, away from direct sunlight. Opened material exposed to ambient air above 60% RH for more than 8 h should be re-dried before melt processing. These are not unique to 920-555; they are general storage requirements for absorption-prone ABS feedstocks and should be tightened if a high-gloss surface is specified.

What limits the melt-processing window for 920-555?

Moisture is the first processing boundary. At 60% relative humidity, loose ABS pellets can absorb 0.2–0.4 wt% moisture within 4–6 h if stored outside a sealed container. When these pellets are fed to a reciprocating screw at melt temperatures above 220 °C, flash evaporation of water creates splay, silver streaks, weak knit lines, and gloss variation. A closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30 °C or lower should be used, with a drying air temperature of 80–85 °C and a pellet residence time of 2–4 h. Target moisture at the feed throat is ≤0.05 wt% for untextured high-gloss mouldings and ≤0.1 wt% for matte or industrial parts. Dew-point monitoring at the hopper outlet is required because humidity breakthrough can occur on humid-shift production lines.

Barrel temperature profiling should be adjusted for screw speed and cycle. Typical rear-zone settings of 210 °C, middle-zone settings of 220–235 °C, and nozzle settings of 230–240 °C keep the melt in the 220–250 °C range. Continuous melt residence above 260 °C for more than 5 min accelerates oxidation of the butadiene phase, causing yellowing, viscosity drift, and gloss loss; the nozzle should be retracted from the sprue bushing during stoppages longer than 10–15 min. Screw designs with L/D 20:1 to 25:1 and a compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 are suitable. Shot volume should be 50–70% of maximum barrel capacity.

Injection pressure is normally 80–140 MPa for ABS with wall-thickness-to-flow-length ratios typical of appliance and electronics housings. Hold pressure should be stage-transferred at 95–98% cavity fill and held at 50–70% of injection pressure. Back pressure of 0.5–1.5 MPa improves colour dispersion and additive homogeneity; screw speed for 35–50 mm diameter screws should start at 30–70 min⁻¹ and be reduced if the material shears excessively. Mould temperature is held at 40–80 °C with water or oil thermolators; below 35 °C, flow marks and poor knit-line fusion may appear, while above 90 °C, cycle time rises and ejection can become difficult. Clamp-force estimates can be obtained by multiplying total projected area by a cavity pressure allowance of 20–40 MPa. For a multi-cavity electronic toy component with projected area around 300 cm², the required clamp force would be approximately 600–1200 kN, depending on gate geometry and wall stock.

Vents of 0.02–0.05 mm depth and 3–6 mm width at the end of fill reduce burn marks; insufficient venting is a common cause of short shots and black specks in the last area to fill. Gates for ABS should be sized between 0.5–0.8 mm for pin gates and 1.0–2.0 mm for edge gates, with land lengths of 0.8–1.2 mm. Wall stock below 1.0 mm may require a high-flow grade or a hot-runner design; published data for the exact flow class of 920-555 is limited, so spiral-flow testing under ISO 1133-1:2022 is recommended if the supplier cannot provide grade-specific flow length data.

Purging between colours or before shutdown should use acrylic or general-purpose polystyrene. PVC, acetal, nylon, or PET residues should not be left in the barrel because their decomposition products cross-contaminate the ABS and generate black specks. If gas streaks appear after a changeover, the barrel should be purged with a commercial styrenic purge compound and the mould wiped with a clean dry cotton cloth; no release agent should be introduced unless validated because silicone-based mould sprays can cause surface craters on unpainted ABS parts.

Mechanical differentiation of 920-555 cannot be established from the trade number alone. The reference intervals in Table 1 are documented property bands for unfilled general-purpose ABS, not a verified release sheet for Dongguan Hongsheng ABS 920-555. They are included to define the test methods and comparative ranges that a purchaser should request from the batch certificate. Where the phrase “general-purpose” appears, it refers to the ABS copolymer class and not to any specific contract grade.

Differences from other products are best assessed by comparing these properties under identical sample preparation. For example, an ABS grade with melt volume-flow rate at the high end of 30–40 cm³/10 min may fill thin-wall electronic housings but usually sacrifices notched impact relative to a 10–15 cm³/10 min grade. A heat-resistant ABS may shift heat deflection temperature to 100–110 °C under 0.45 MPa and Vicat softening to 110–120 °C, while a flame-retardant grade may carry a UL 94 V-0 classification at 1.5 mm. Such variations cannot be attributed to 920-555 without a lot release test.

If regrind is added above 20 wt%, what quality limits should be monitored?

Regrind does not behave as an exact drop-in replacement for virgin pellets. Single-pass ABS regrind from sprues and runners, ground through a 6 mm screen, has lower bulk density and a broader particle size distribution. Fines below 1 mm should be limited to ≤5 wt% of the regrind fraction; higher fines levels can produce feed-bridging in hoppers and uneven screw feeding. At 20 wt% regrind addition on an 800–1200 kN clamp machine, cavity filling generally remains stable if the screw cushion is held at 3–6 mm and the back pressure is kept at 0.5–1.0 MPa.

The measurable property shifts are melt viscosity loss, impact loss, and colour drift. After three heat histories, a medium-butadiene ABS may show a melt volume-flow rate increase of 10–20% and a notched Izod decrease of 5–15% relative to virgin pellets; these values are typical for the ABS class and are not a certificate value for 920-555. Therefore, when regrind content exceeds 20 wt%, the blend should be tested before production. A capillary rheometer or melt indexer should be operated at 220 °C/10 kg according to ISO 1133-1:2022, and Izod specimens should be prepared in the same tool and conditioning atmosphere as the virgin control. If the melt volume-flow rate increases by more than 15%, injection velocity should be reduced and melt temperature lowered by 5 °C to preserve melt strength.

For structural clips, snap-fits, or enclosures with impact requirements, regrind content above 25 wt% is not recommended without documented notched impact testing and colour acceptance. The exact molecular weight distribution of 920-555 will determine whether the plateau is higher or lower; reliable comparison requires a lot-to-lot reference sample and a controlled regrind trial over at least 3 production shifts.

Chemical resistance of the ABS copolymer class is a design constraint. The material is swollen or stress-cracked by ketones, chlorinated solvents, esters, and aromatic hydrocarbons; methyl ethyl ketone at 23 °C can crack a stressed moulding in minutes. Dilute acids and alkalis may be tolerated for short contact at room temperature, but continuous immersion in 10% sodium hydroxide at 60 °C can produce surface whitening and bond-line attack. Strong oxidizing agents and chlorine dioxide are not compatible. Exterior exposure without UV stabilisation causes chalking and impact loss; for unpigmented ABS, accelerated weathering under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 may show colour shift and gloss loss within 500 h, but this is grade- and pigment-dependent. If outdoor weathering is specified, a stabilised grade or capstock should be validated by the supplier.

Food-contact and medical clearance are formulation-specific. Certain ABS resins may be authorised for particular food-contact uses under FDA 21 CFR 180.22, but this does not apply automatically to 920-555 unless the supplier’s statement of compliance explicitly cites the paragraph and conditions of use. For electrical and electronic applications, the material should be checked against RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II: lead ≤0.1%, mercury ≤0.1%, cadmium ≤0.01%, hexavalent chromium ≤0.1%, and PBBs/PBDEs ≤0.1% at the homogeneous material level. REACH candidate-list SVHCs should be verified at ≤0.1% w/w per article. These limits are legal thresholds, not mechanical performance values.

Applications normally assigned to an ABS grade such as 920-555 include appliance housings, vacuum cleaner bodies, computer keyboard frames, electronic control enclosures, toy components, telephone handsets, automotive interior trim substrates, and general-purpose injection mouldings that require a combination of impact resistance and dimensional stability. Secondary operations may include ultrasonic welding, hot-stamping, painting, screen printing, and vacuum metallisation. Ultrasonic welding of ABS is commonly performed at 20–40 kHz with an amplitude of 20–40 µm and trigger force of 100–300 N; joint and fixture design require line trials. Hot-stamping of ABS surfaces can be performed at 140–180 °C with a dwell of 0.5–1.5 s at 0.2–0.8 MPa. Paint adhesion should be evaluated by ISO 2409 cross-cut and ISO 2812-2 after water soak. Plating on ABS requires an electroplating-specific grade and chromic-sulfuric acid etching at 60–70 °C for 10–20 min; the designation 920-555 does not, by itself, indicate a plating-grade formulation.

The principal differences between ABS 920-555 and other products are flow, butadiene level, heat stabiliser, and additive package. Compared with SAN, ABS provides higher notched impact because of the dispersed polybutadiene rubber phase but lower transparency and chemical resistance. Compared with HIPS, ABS generally gives higher surface hardness and stiffness but at higher density and cost; tabulated reference densities are 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ for ABS and 1.04–1.06 g/cm³ for HIPS depending on filler. Compared with polycarbonate/ABS, the unfilled ABS class has lower heat deflection and lower multi-axial impact but offers easier melt flow and lower mould temperature. Against PC/ASA, ABS is less UV-stable and more solvent-sensitive. Within the Hongsheng product range, 920-555 may be differentiated by its specified melt volume-flow rate, notched Izod, heat deflection, ash content, and residual monomer; these should be compared using ISO 1133-1:2022, ISO 180/A, ISO 75-2/B, ISO 306/B50, ISO 3451-1, and ASTM D2244 on the same injection-moulded plaques. Published data for this specific configuration are limited; the exact differentiation should be based on a three-lot average from the producer, not on nominal trade literature.

Incoming quality control for ABS 920-555 should include moisture by loss-on-drying at 105 °C for 10 min or by Karl Fischer titration, melt volume-flow rate after drying, and visual pellet contamination. A reference plaque should be injection moulded on a validated tool at standard conditions and retained for colour measurement by ASTM D2244 CIE Lab. Colour difference against the master standard should generally be below 1.0 ΔE for visible parts; suppliers may specify wider limits for industrial components. If the lot fails moisture or melt volume-flow rate limits, the material should be re-dried or redefined for non-critical applications. All inspection limits should be stated in the purchase specification, not assumed from the grade designation.
