Injection moulding of Dongguan Hechuang Plastic ABS 98465 into automotive interior substrates begins with desiccant drying at 80±5°C for 2–4 h until residual moisture falls below <0.05%. Compliance is anchored to ISO 3795 horizontal burning rate, with a common target of <100 mm/min for specimens measuring 356×100 mm at normal wall thickness, and to VDA 277 for headspace volatile organic compound determination. Fogging is evaluated per DIN 75201, where gravimetric condensate values below 2 mg are often written into premium-trim sourcing agreements. Formulation additions are stated on a parts-per-hundred-resin basis: ABS 98465 100 phr, heat stabilizer 0.2–0.5 phr, internal release 0.1–0.3 phr, and color masterbatch 1.0–2.5 wt%. Higher masterbatch loadings depress melt-flow stability and increase knit-line visibility on grained surfaces. Processing on a reciprocating-screw injection machine with L/D 20:1 and positive check-ring closure typically uses melt temperature 230–250°C, mould-wall temperature 40–60°C, and clamp force of 4–6 kN/cm² of projected area. Shot cushion is maintained at 2–4 mm; production-scale observation shows that cushion decay beyond 1.5 mm corresponds with jetting, sink marks, and batch-to-batch melt-viscosity drift requiring injection-velocity correction. Terminal components include A-pillar trim, centre-console side panels, glovebox lids, and door-panel inserts.
The etched polybutadiene morphology governs mechanical interlocking of electroless nickel and acid-copper layers. ABS 98465 used for decorative electroplating is formulated at >98 wt% virgin resin with sulfur-free internal release at <0.2 phr; silicone-containing processing aids are incompatible because they suppress palladium-tin activation and produce skip plating on vertical surfaces. Polybutadiene content in plating-grade ABS is typically 15–25 wt%, and the grafted rubber-particle size controls etch-pit density. Coating compliance is assessed under ISO 4527 for decorative metallic coatings, while adhesion is tested per ASTM B533; OEM drawings commonly require first-peel adhesion of 0.45–0.80 N/mm after thermal cycling between −40°C and 80°C for 10–20 cycles. The conversion sequence is chromic-sulfuric etch at 380–420 g/L CrO₃ and 180–220 g/L H₂SO₄, held at 65–70°C for 5–10 min, followed by neutralization, palladium-tin activation, electroless nickel, acid copper 20–30 μm, semibright nickel 10–15 μm, bright nickel 5–10 μm, and decorative chromium 0.2–0.5 μm. Production-scale failure modes include blistering at gate regions where residual stress exceeds 2–3 MPa and incomplete etch on weld lines. Finished goods include showerheads, faucet handles, automotive badges, and instrument-panel bezels.
Where household appliance fascias and control panels are produced under IEC 60335-1, ABS 98465 is compounded with halogenated flame-retardant packages to achieve UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm nominal wall. A typical formulation contains ABS 98465 74–80 wt%, brominated epoxy or brominated polystyrene 14–18 wt%, antimony trioxide 4–6 wt%, polytetrafluoroethylene anti-drip additive 0.3–0.5 wt%, color masterbatch 1–2 wt%, and thermal stabilizer 0.1–0.3 wt%; residual balance is process aid. RoHS compliance under 2011/65/EU and REACH Annex XVII applies to the flame retardant and pigment package, not to the base resin alone. Compounding is carried out in a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 40:1, barrel set points 180–210°C, screw speed 300–400 rpm, and vacuum devolatilization at −0.08 MPa to strip residual styrene and moisture. In injection moulding, melt temperature is maintained at 210–240°C; barrel residence time beyond 5–6 min causes yellowing and free-antimony streaking. Mould temperatures of 40–70°C are used with chiller flow of 15–20 L/min per cavity to control warpage on parts with bosses and snap-fits. Holding pressure is set at 40–60 MPa and cooling time at 15–25 s. Terminal products include washing-machine control panels, refrigerator fascia strips, and dishwasher front-trim inserts.
Information technology equipment enclosures fabricated from ABS 98465 are typically self-coloured or pad-printed to avoid paint-line capacitance and volatile organic emissions. Fire-hazard compliance is evaluated under IEC 62368-1 and UL 94; at 2.0 mm wall thickness, open-frame power-supply compartments commonly require V-0, while V-2 may be accepted only for limited-power-source circuits. Formulation additions include ABS 98465 100 phr, silicone anti-scratch masterbatch 1.0–3.0 wt%, titanium dioxide 0.5–1.5 wt% for colour and laser-marking contrast, carbon black or mixed pigment masterbatch 1.0–2.5 wt%, and optional hindered-amine light stabilizer at 0.2–0.5 wt% for ports exposed to indirect sunlight. Processing starts with desiccant drying at 80–85°C for 2–4 h, with outlet air dew point at −30°C or lower. Injection parameters include melt 220±10°C, mould 50±10°C, screw recovery speed 60–120 rpm, and back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa; shot volume should not exceed 80% of barrel capacity to avoid excessive residence and check-ring contamination. Production-scale observation shows that screw-cushion variation above 2 mm shifts part mass by 0.4–0.8% and alters latch gap dimensions. Mechanical validation uses notched Izod impact per ASTM D256-23 and tensile modulus per ASTM D638-22; acceptance values are prescribed by platform qualification plans. Terminal articles include router housings, network-switch boxes, power-strip shells, and set-top box chassis.
| Application | Standard designation | Test condition | Typical acceptance target |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automotive interior trim | ISO 3795 | horizontal, 356×100 mm, normal thickness | burn rate <100 mm/min |
| Decorative electroplating | ISO 4527 | thermal cycling −40 to 80°C | no blistering; adhesion 0.45–0.80 N/mm |
| Appliance fascia | UL 94 | vertical, 1.5 mm | V-0 |
| ITE enclosures | IEC 62368-1 | fire enclosure, 2.0 mm | V-0 or platform-defined |
Sheet extrusion lines running ABS 98465 for thermoformed luggage shells require wide-specification lot-to-lot melt stability. The resin is dry-blended with 5–10 phr of high-butadiene impact modifier when deep-draw corners exceed a draw ratio of 1.5:1, UV stabilizer masterbatch at 0.3–0.8 wt%, and colour/effect masterbatch at 1.0–3.0 wt%. Compliance tests for the finished shell include tensile yield stress per ASTM D638-22, flexural modulus per ASTM D790-17, notched Izod at −20°C per ASTM D256-23, and xenon-arc weathering per ISO 4892-2 with colour-shift limits defined by the brand owner. Extrusion is conducted on a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1 and barrier screw, barrel zones 180–240°C, adaptor and flat die at 220–235°C, and a vertical three-roll stack maintained at 70–100°C. Sheet thickness is typically 2.0–4.5 mm; thickness variation above 0.15 mm across the die creates uneven infrared absorption and non-uniform wall distribution in the thermoformer. Thermoforming uses quartz or ceramic IR heaters to raise sheet surface temperature to 160–200°C, followed by vacuum and pressure forming at 0.4–0.8 MPa into aluminium moulds held at 40–60°C. Terminal goods include hard-shell carry-on luggage, instrument cases, and protective equipment shells.
Consumer electronics enclosures demand resistance to brittle failure at −30 to −20°C and wear resistance on touch edges. ABS 98465 is injected at 100 phr with an impact modifier addition of 3–5 wt% when wall thickness drops below 2.0 mm or when snap-fit return force is high. Heat stabilizer is added at 0.2–0.5 phr, internal release at 0.1–0.2 phr, and colour masterbatch at 1.0–2.5 wt%. Published data for this specific grade under these exact thin-wall conditions is limited; selection therefore relies on lot-level control of melt-flow rate measured according to ISO 1133-1:2022 and ASTM D1238-23, with melt-volume rate tolerance of ±10% accepted only after pre-drying to <0.05% moisture. Processing uses melt temperatures of 220–245°C, mould temperatures of 50–80°C, and fast injection velocities of 80–150 mm/s to prevent surface blush in high-gloss black parts. Low-temperature performance is validated with notched Izod impact per ASTM D256-23 at −30°C and cold-drop tests after conditioning per IEC 60068-2-1; failure generally initiates at gate vestiges where frozen-in stress concentrates. Terminal components include earbud charging-case housings, portable electronic device shells, and remote-control bodies.

Dongguan Hechuang Plastic ABS 98465 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection moulding resin supplied as cylindrical pellets. The 98465 designation is a supplier-specific model reference and does not correspond to a standardized ISO grade designation. The resin is positioned for rigid components that require a controlled balance of melt fluidity, surface hardness, and medium impact resistance. Supplier-reported typical values include density of 1.05 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019, melt volume-flow rate of 18 cm³/10 min to 24 cm³/10 min at 220 °C under 10 kg per ISO 1133-1:2022, tensile yield stress of 42 MPa to 46 MPa per ISO 527-2:2012, and notched Izod impact of 20 kJ/m² to 25 kJ/m² at 23 °C per ISO 180:2019. Published lot-specific retest data for this configuration are limited; these ranges should be read as supplier-typical values rather than guaranteed specification limits unless a certificate of analysis states otherwise.
Pre-drying is a necessary first step. Pellets are dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2 h to 4 h to reach a hopper outlet moisture content below 0.05%. At moisture levels above 0.08%, surface splay appears on polished tools and weld-line tensile strength decreases by 15% to 25% relative to dry material when tested per ISO 527-2:2012. Production-scale observations on a 1,000 kN clamp force injection moulding machine with a 40 mm diameter screw and 20:1 L/D ratio indicate that shot-to-shot melt viscosity variability remains below 3% when first-generation regrind is held below 15 wt% and hopper residence time is less than 30 min.
Although the grade tolerates a wider gate-size range than high-heat ABS, its practical melt-temperature window is bounded by two failure modes. At melt temperatures below 210 °C, incomplete plastication raises injection-pressure demand and increases short-shot frequency in wall sections below 1.2 mm. At melt temperatures above 250 °C, rubber-phase degradation produces yellowing and lowers notched Izod impact at 23 °C. The melt set point is therefore maintained between 220 °C and 240 °C, with mould temperature between 40 °C and 70 °C for unfilled ABS per ISO 294-1:2017 specimen preparation practice.
Hot-runner systems with internally heated tips are avoided where possible; external heating with a manifold set point of 235 °C and a tip flush of 0.5 s to 1.0 s reduces gate-zone residence degradation. Screw back pressure is set at 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa, and screw surface speed is limited to 0.2 m/s to 0.4 m/s to prevent shear heating beyond 5 °C above the barrel set point. In a 24-cavity tool, hold-pressure transfer from velocity control at 95% filling to pressure control at 45 MPa improved gate freeze consistency and reduced sink mark depth by 0.03 mm to 0.05 mm compared with conventional position switching.
Residence time in the barrel is limited to 5 min at 240 °C; longer exposures reduce spiral flow length by approximately 8% and raise yellowness index by 1.5 units per ASTM E313-20. For production interruptions exceeding 10 min, the screw is retracted and the barrel purged with a lower-viscosity general-purpose ABS before restart. Capillary rheometry at 230 °C shows shear-thinning behaviour; apparent viscosity drops from 280 Pa·s at 100 s⁻¹ to 45 Pa·s at 1,000 s⁻¹, which is a narrower shear-rate response than a typical PC/ABS alloy.

| Melt temperature | 220 °C to 240 °C | Short-shot and degradation boundary |
| Mould temperature | 40 °C to 70 °C | Gloss and cycle time |
| Screw back pressure | 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa | Melt homogeneity |
| Hold pressure | 45 MPa to 60 MPa | Gate seal and sink reduction |
| Barrel residence time | <5 min at 240 °C | Yellowness drift |
When evaluated against halogen-free flame-retardant ABS and PC/ABS blends, 98465 occupies a narrow performance band defined by processability, thermal resistance, and impact. Halogen-free FR ABS grades typically achieve a UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm but require lower melt temperatures to prevent phosphinate decomposition and produce plate-out on polished tool surfaces after 8 h to 12 h of continuous cycling. ABS 98465 avoids that failure mode because no phosphorus-based flame retardant is present; however, the absence of flame retardants means the grade is classified only as UL 94 HB at 1.5 mm.
Against PC/ABS alloys, 98465 has lower heat deflection temperature and lower multi-axial impact, but its lower melt viscosity improves filling of thin-wall rib sections and permits lower injection pressure in long flow-path tools. Mould shrinkage is anisotropic; parallel-to-flow shrinkage of 0.4% to 0.6% and perpendicular-to-flow shrinkage of 0.5% to 0.7% should be used for initial tool design per ISO 294-4:2018. Multi-cavity tools with edge gating typically show a 0.1% dimensional difference between near-gate and end-of-fill regions.

The differentiation from a general-purpose ABS is not a single property shift but a narrower melt-viscosity band and more uniform rubber particle size distribution. In a 16-cavity automotive clip tool, cavity-to-cavity weight variation of 0.012 g was recorded for 98465, compared with 0.024 g for an uncontrolled general-purpose grade run under the same parameters. This reduces post-moulding dimensional sorting and clip retention failures in downstream assembly. For power-tool housings, the grade provides a comparative tracking index of 600 V when tested per IEC 60112:2020 and meets dielectric strength requirements for Class II appliance insulation at 30 kV/mm. These values are typical for unfilled ABS and are not sufficient for reinforced insulation in high-energy circuits.
For high-gloss equipment housings, tool polishing to Ra 0.025 µm is required to reproduce the grade’s surface finish. Mould temperatures below 40 °C produce visible flow lines, while values above 70 °C extend cycle time beyond 35 s for a 2.5 mm wall and increase sink tendency at bosses. Gloss measured at 60° per ASTM D523-14 remains above 88 GU when the tool is held at 60 °C and fill speed is kept below 100 mm/s. In audio equipment front panels, rattle and buzz screening per IEC 60268-5:2003 is required; ABS 98465 does not provide special acoustic damping beyond typical unfilled ABS, so structural ribbing and gasket selection dominate the result.
Environmental stress-cracking resistance is limited in contact with methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, and aromatic hydrocarbons; prolonged exposure can reduce weld-line strength by more than 30%. Paint systems containing strong ketone solvents should be applied only after adhesion promoter and after compatibility screening on 50 mm × 50 mm plaques. Annealing at 80 °C for 2 h reduces molded-in stress and improves solvent crack resistance, but may slightly relax gloss-critical surfaces. Outdoor use without UV stabilizers leads to surface chalking and a reduction in notched Izod impact after 500 h of xenon-arc exposure per ISO 4892-2:2013; the grade is therefore specified for interior or enclosed environments unless an additional UV-stabilized capstock or coating is applied.
Regrind incorporation changes the melt flow behaviour in a non-linear manner because rubber-phase crosslinking and free-volume loss accelerate with repeated extrusion. When first-generation regrind is added at 20 wt%, melt flow rate may decline by 2 cm³/10 min to 4 cm³/10 min and injection pressure required to fill a standard spiral mould may increase by 3 MPa to 6 MPa. The drying load also increases because regrind particle size distribution shifts toward a higher surface-area fraction.
A desiccant dryer with a dew point of -40 °C and airflow of 3.7 m³/h per kg/h is sufficient for virgin pellets; the same dryer may be undersized when regrind exceeds 20 wt% because moisture re-absorption in fines drives hopper outlet moisture above 0.07% within 20 min. On a 1,500 kN injection moulding machine with a 50 mm screw, stroke-to-stroke cushion variation increased from 0.6 mm to 1.4 mm when regrind content was raised from 10 wt% to 30 wt%, requiring a wider transfer position tolerance.
The material is supplied with lot-level certificate of analysis covering melt flow rate, notched Izod impact, and colour. Compliance with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU is documented by XRF screening per IEC 62321-5:2013, with lead, mercury, cadmium, and hexavalent chromium each below 1000 mg/kg and PBB/PBDE below 1000 mg/kg. Under REACH Regulation EC 1907/2006, supplier documentation indicates no candidate-list SVHC above 0.1% w/w. The grade is not certified for food-contact use under FDA 21 CFR 181.32 and should not be specified for potable-water contact without additional barrier approval.
