Application of Dongguan Haohan Plastic PC/ABS 3009D

Downstream application boundaries for Dongguan Haohan Plastic PC/ABS 3009D derive from the interaction of polycarbonate phase stiffness, butadiene-phase impact absorption, and melt-flow behaviour during injection moulding of semi-structural environmental enclosures. The grade’s processing envelope must be verified lot-to-lot by melt-volume rate testing under ISO 1133-1:2022 at 260°C/5 kg; however, the specific MVR target belongs to supplier documentation and is not restated here. A shared boundary condition for all scenarios is moisture content below 0.02 wt% before melt plasticisation; the drying system must be a dehumidifying hopper dryer with a dew point not higher than −40°C, because residual water reacts with polycarbonate carbonate linkages and lowers molecular weight. No downstream processing recommendation in this document replaces verification against the supplier’s current UL Yellow Card, REACH 1907/2006, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and application-specific OEM standards. Where cited test values are thickness dependent, the moulder must re-qualify at the actual demoulded wall thickness.

Steering-column lower shrouds, left/right lower instrument panel carriers, glove-box outer shells, and footwell side covers constitute a downstream cluster in which 15–20 phr of internally reprocessed sprue-and-runner regrind is incorporated into 100 phr of 3009D only when the regrind is produced from material exposed to a maximum melt temperature of 265°C and no more than one heat history. The material is dried at 100°C for 4 h to <0.02 wt% moisture and processed in hydraulic injection machines with clamp force 1200–1600 kN, three-zone screws of L/D 20:1, shot cushion 3–5 mm, and back pressure 0.5–1.5 MPa. Melt temperature is held at 255°C ± 5°C measured at the nozzle; mould coolant is set to 70°C ± 5°C to avoid butadiene-phase gloss variation on grained surfaces. Injection velocity is 50–80 mm/s for 2.0–2.5 mm wall thickness, followed by packing at 60–70 MPa for 5–8 s; a mould temperature differential above 10°C between the moving and fixed halves induces post-demould curl on long flat sections. Compliance for automotive interior combustion is evaluated against ISO 3795 and FMVSS 302 with acceptance of ≤100 mm/min horizontal burning rate at 3.0 mm; odour is appraised under VDA 270 and fogging under DIN 75201 method B or OEM-specific chamber methods. Demoulded component types include lower steering-column covers with integrated leaf-spring snaps, glove-box bins with integrally moulded hinge pins, and footwell side covers with clip towers. The application boundary stops at airbag-critical components: no device whose failure affects restraint deployment should be produced from this grade without OEM deployment testing.

Does Gate-Freeze Time Dictate Hinge Boss Porosity in Indoor Network Distribution Enclosures?

In indoor wall-mount and 19-inch rack distribution enclosures, integrally moulded hinge bosses and snap-fit front bezels rely on gate freeze-off not occurring before packing completion, because porosity at the boss root reduces drop strength. For these components, the let-down ratio is 100 parts by weight 3009D with 2.0 parts UL-listed light-grey colour concentrate; external regrind is excluded when the bezel must maintain a 0.2 mm clearance gap, because viscosity drift from regrind degrades cushion control of the hot-runner valve gates. Drying at 100°C for 4 h in a −40°C dew point hopper dryer is required, and the shot-to-shot moisture target is <0.02 wt% as determined by Karl Fischer titration after 160°C oven extraction. The production cell uses a 1200 kN hydraulic press with 40 mm screw diameter, L/D 22:1, and valve-gated hot runner drops not smaller than 1.2 mm; melt temperature is 250–260°C, mould coolant is 75°C, and maximum screw rotation is 80 rpm to avoid adiabatic heat accumulation that turns the butadiene phase yellow at the vent. Holding pressure is 55–65 MPa for the 4.5 mm gate boss section, with an extended hold time of 10 s to maintain liquid core supply at the hinge root. Compliance is referenced to IEC 62368-1:2018 for mechanical enclosure strength and IEC 60529 for IP5X dust-protection sealing faces; flame classification is limited to UL 94 HB at 3.0 mm unless the current UL Yellow Card demonstrates otherwise. Terminal products include 16-port and 8-port wall-mount enclosures, rack front bezels, and distribution box internal DIN-rail support frames.

Where AC charging coupler latch brackets, strain-relief clamps, and internal cable guides must absorb repeated mating impact after outdoor soak, the relevant processing risk shifts to low-temperature butadiene-phase embrittlement. In these parts, 100 phr of 3009D is combined with 2–3 phr of hindered-amine light stabilizer masterbatch and 0.2 phr internal mould release when the mould uses plate lifters; regrind is capped at 10 phr because repeated processing of the butadiene phase reduces Charpy notched impact at −30°C and the application must not fall below the OEM latch-drop threshold. Drying is 100°C for 4 h to <0.02 wt%. Injection moulding runs in an 800 kN electric press with two tunnel gates feeding a 2.0 mm wall; melt temperature is 245–255°C, mould temperature 80°C, and hold pressure 50–65 MPa for 6 s. Post-mould measurement of latch beam flatness over a 45 mm span is held within 0.15 mm by balanced cooling channels; parts are not released until the cavity pressure integral reaches 0.8 relative to the production baseline. Regulatory loading for the peripheral bracket cluster is drawn from IEC 62196-1:2022 for mechanical load testing of charging coupler accessories and UL 2251 only for non-current-carrying components; UV stabilizer masterbatch is evaluated under ISO 4892-2 cycle 1 for outdoor-facing surfaces. Published data for this specific grade in outdoor UV-stabilized charging coupler latch geometries is limited; the HALS masterbatch let-down is a starting point and must be confirmed by ISO 4892-2 exposure on the coloured compound. Terminal products include AC coupler latch brackets, cable strain-relief clamps, and internal guide rails. The grade is not proposed for current-carrying insulation, nor for outdoor front covers without additional UV qualification against ΔE ≤ 2 after 2,000 h xenon accelerated aging.

Power Tool Auxiliary Handle Vibration-Crack Threshold Testing with Cold-Gate Moulds

In auxiliary handles and rear housing shells for portable power tools, vibration-induced crack propagation at screw bosses is the primary failure mode observed on production lines when the injection gate freezes before the packing curve completes. The formulation addition ratio for this impact-critical geometry is 100 parts by weight 3009D with 1.5 parts black masterbatch and 10–15 phr in-house regrind only from sprues and short shots that have not exceeded 260°C melt temperature; no external styrene-based additive is used because it shifts the polycarbonate/ABS phase morphology toward coarse butadiene domains and lowers weld-line energy. Drying is 100°C for 4–5 h to <0.02 wt%. The process uses a 900 kN injection press with a cold-runner two-plate mould, direct edge gates of 1.5 mm depth, screw L/D 20:1, and melt temperature 250°C ± 5°C; the mould steel is held at 65°C to balance impact resistance against grain replication. Holding pressure is programmed at 65 MPa for 3 s and 30 MPa for 6 s; the gate tunnel is positioned at least 8 mm from the nearest screw boss to prevent jetting. Compliance is checked against ISO 179-1/1eA for Charpy notched impact and ASTM D638-14 Type I tensile modulus on plaques cut from the same batch; vibration-crack validation follows an end-user duty-cycle protocol of 12,000 cycles at 28 Hz on a servo-hydraulic shaker with ±1.5 mm displacement. Terminal products include rear handle shells, battery housing supports, and auxiliary side handles. The operational boundary is 50°C continuous surface temperature; the grade is not proposed for hot-air gun or soldering tool housings where surface temperatures exceed 70°C.

Control console housings for washing machines, pedestal air treatment units, and air-conditioning interface panels impose an almost contradictory set of constraints: mirror-gloss surfaces exclude regrind clouds, while thick knob bosses demand packing compensation. The let-down ratio is 100 parts by weight 3009D with 2.0 parts of low-shear white colour masterbatch and 0 phr regrind for SPI A2 surfaces; at SPI B2 texture, 10 phr regrind is acceptable. Dehumidifying drying at 100°C for 4.5 h to <0.02 wt% moisture is required, especially in facilities where ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. The tool is a 2+2 family mould with sequential valve gates; the rotary knob boss cross-section is 4.0 mm, and the surrounding wall is 2.3 mm. Melt temperature is 255°C at the nozzle; mould coolant supply is 85°C with differential not exceeding 5°C between core and cavity plates. The pack curve uses a step from 70 MPa for 2 s to 35 MPa for 7 s to prevent sink marks while avoiding overpacking the low-wall region. Post-mould vision inspection of knob boss inner diameter must hold 0.05 mm repeatability at a measurement temperature of 23°C ± 2°C. Household safety compliance is evaluated under IEC 60335-1:2020; glow-wire ignition resistance is tested according to IEC 60695-2-11 at the final wall thickness, and the material supplier document must be consulted for the thickness-specific glow-wire classification. Terminal products include washer control panel housings, air-conditioner interface bezels, and air-treatment unit consoles. The grade is not specified for unattended appliance enclosures requiring 850°C glow-wire without flame-retardant upgrading.

When a Portable Diagnostic Enclosure Must Survive Isopropyl Alcohol Wipe Testing and 1.0 J Impact at 0°C

For portable diagnostic equipment enclosures used in field service and patient-adjacent but non-patient-contact areas, chemical resistance against disinfectant wipes must be balanced against moderate mechanical impact requirements. The formulation ratio is 100 parts by weight 3009D with 0.5–1.0 parts of a polycarbonate-compatible internal mould release and 2.0 parts of a light grey masterbatch; regrind is limited to 15 phr and only from unfilled, uncontaminated parts that have undergone no secondary heat exposure. Drying at 100°C for 4 h to <0.02 wt% moisture is non-negotiable because surface weld lines in the display window frame exhibit splay when moisture exceeds 0.025 wt%. The mould is a 2-plate tool with a fan gate into the base, cavity pressure transducers in the window frame, and an ejector plate with blade pins; clamping force is 1,000 kN. Melt temperature is 245–255°C, mould temperature 70°C, and back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa. The pack command is transferred from velocity to pressure at 95% cavity fill, with hold pressure 60 MPa for 8 s to keep the window frame flat within 0.10 mm across 120 mm. Compliance for electrical safety is referenced to IEC 60601-1:2012 for the fully assembled device, while material chemical resistance is validated by wiping the surface at 1.5 kg contact load with 70% isopropyl alcohol for 25 cycles and checking for gloss change above 3 GU on a 20° glossmeter. Terminal products include portable ultrasound cart handles, hand-held diagnostic analyser housings, and mobile ECG cart side enclosures. The boundary is strict: non-patient-contact enclosures only; any claim for patient-contact is outside the scope of this grade unless the moulder obtains a full ISO 10993-5 test package on the exact coloured compound.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Haohan Plastic PC/ABS 3009D is supplied as an unfilled injection-molding alloy based on polycarbonate and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene. In ISO 1043 nomenclature the blend is designated PC+ABS; the commercial suffix 3009D is a supplier-specific grade marker and does not correspond to a standardized ISO or ASTM classification. The material is an amorphous thermoplastic with a broad softening response controlled by both the PC-rich and ABS-rich phases rather than a single crystalline melting point. Published English-language datacards for this exact lot are limited, so lot-specific values must be obtained from the certificate of analysis and the current supplier processing guide. In compounding practice, an unfilled PC/ABS of this category is specified when the melt processability of ABS is required together with the dimensional stability and low-temperature impact response of bisphenol-A polycarbonate. The grade is not a direct substitute for neat polycarbonate in aggressive organic-solvent service, nor for neat ABS in applications where limited drying capacity is a production constraint.

What Class-Typical Property Ranges Are Reported for Unfilled PC/ABS Injection Grades?

Because the supplier has not publicly committed to a full ISO mechanical datacard for PC/ABS 3009D, the following table lists class-typical values for general-purpose unfilled PC/ABS injection-molding compounds. These ranges are derived from standard characterization practice and are not a substitute for lot-specific data. The test methods cited are the controlling procedures for comparing this material against other suppliers’ grades.

FlammabilityIEC 60695-11-10:2013HB at 1.5 mm unless FR-modifiedPC/ABS 3009D must not be inferred to carry a V-0 listing without a UL yellow card.

Dynamic mechanical analysis under ISO 6721-11 on unfilled PC/ABS typically shows two loss-modulus maxima near 105–115°C and 145–150°C for the ABS-rich and PC-rich phases; the exact peak positions depend on the blend ratio and any impact-modifier package. The 3009D designation does not include an ISO 1043 flame-retardant code, so the material should be treated as a general-purpose grade unless the supplier provides a recognized UL 94 V-0 card for the specific color and thickness.

Dryer Dew Point, Melt Residence Time, and Screw Design Control the Allowable Processing Window

Drying of PC/ABS 3009D is not a minor pre-treatment step; it is a primary production control because the polycarbonate phase undergoes hydrolytic degradation when melt moisture exceeds 0.02%. Pre-drying is mandatory for all lots, not only at high ambient humidity. If the resin is exposed to air above 60% RH for more than 30 min after drying, re-drying is required. A desiccant dryer with a dew point of −40°C or lower is used at 80–100°C for 4–6 h. The target pellet moisture is ≤0.02% by Karl Fischer titration or a calibrated moisture analyzer; hot-melt moisture analyzers are generally not reliable below 0.05% for this material class.

Melt temperature measured by needle pyrometer is typically 240–270°C. Barrel set-flat profiles from rear to nozzle are commonly 230–250°C, 240–260°C, 250–270°C, and nozzle 250–270°C. At melt temperatures above 280°C, the polycarbonate segment undergoes chain scission and discoloration, while the butadiene phase of ABS becomes thermally unstable. Total melt residence time at 240–270°C should not exceed 5 min; when interruption exceeds 10 min, the barrel should be purged with a PC-compatible purge compound or neat polycarbonate. The shot size should remain between 50% and 70% of the barrel capacity to avoid excessively long residence time or melt-temperature variation.

Processing is performed on a reciprocating-screw injection-molding machine with closed-loop injection velocity control. A three-zone screw with L/D 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio 2.0:1–2.5:1 is preferred; high-compression screws above 3.0:1 can locally shear the polycarbonate phase and raise melt temperature beyond the setpoint. The back pressure is typically maintained at 3–7 bar when color concentrate is added, but excessive back pressure increases residence time and yellows the melt. Injection speed is adjusted for the part wall section; thin-wall parts may require high velocity, but jetting and silver streaks on production equipment indicate that the melt front has exceeded stable filling conditions or that the melt contains moisture.

The mold wall should be held at 60–90°C. Below 60°C, weld-line strength and gloss replication deteriorate because the two flow fronts freeze before sufficient chain interdiffusion occurs. The resulting weld line acts as a mechanical notch; if thin-wall enclosure parts show brittle failure at weld locations, the first process change is to raise mold temperature or reposition the gate. Regrind addition for non-appearance structural parts is commonly limited to 20% by mass; appearance parts often exclude regrind because the ABS butadiene phase yellows after repeated heat history. Additives containing free amines should be avoided because they can promote polycarbonate degradation at melt temperatures above 270°C.

Compounding of PC/ABS is typically performed on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with L/D 40:1–48:1, vacuum venting, and strand pelletization. The pelletized form therefore carries the heat history of a controlled compounding step, but batch-to-batch variance in melt flow rate, color, and impact can still occur. Incoming material should be checked for pellet moisture, melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022, and as-molded color drift before approval for production.

Dimensional stability in electrical enclosures is specified with post-molding shrinkage in the flow direction typically 0.4–0.7% and transverse 0.5–0.8% measured after 48 h at 23°C/50% RH following ISO 294-4. For automotive interior trim, burn rate under ISO 3795 at 2 mm thickness must not exceed 100 mm/min for many OEM specifications. As an unfilled general-purpose grade, PC/ABS 3009D may be HB under IEC 60695-11-10; it is not a substitute for a V-0 grade in proximity to uninsulated live parts unless the supplier provides a valid UL listing for the specified color and thickness.

Electronic enclosure applications are evaluated by ball-pressure test under IEC 60695-10-2 at 75°C or 125°C depending on insulation class. Unfilled PC/ABS typically passes at 75°C; the specific 3009D lot must be verified at the final part thickness. For outdoor unpainted parts, PC/ABS is generally not recommended because polycarbonate photodegradation under ISO 4892-2 xenon-arc exposure can reduce notched impact after 1000 h. If an outdoor-facing part is specified, a PC+ASA or stabilized polycarbonate grade is usually substituted, and the supplier should be required to provide xenon-arc data for the exact formulation.

If the Mating Part Requires Acetone, Toluene, or Brake-Fluid Exposure, a Crystalline Polymer or PC/PBT Blend Is Usually More Suitable

Unfilled PC/ABS is an amorphous alloy and is susceptible to environmental stress cracking when exposed to aromatic hydrocarbons, ketones, esters, and some glycol ethers. Immersion testing under ASTM D543 is used to assess tensile property retention after solvent contact. The polycarbonate phase is particularly sensitive to methyl ethyl ketone, acetone, and toluene, while the ABS phase can be attacked by organic solvents and some plasticizers. Published quantitative chemical-resistance data for PC/ABS 3009D is limited; therefore, any application involving solvent wiping, adhesive bonding, or under-hood fluid contact must be validated on molded parts under the actual stress state.

If a housing requires repeated contact with automotive brake fluid, alkaline cleaning solutions at elevated temperature, or strong organic solvents, a crystalline polymer such as PBT or a PC/PBT blend is usually more suitable. PC/PBT retains better solvent resistance because of the semicrystalline polyester phase, but it may exhibit lower notched impact than unfilled PC/ABS at low temperature. The choice between PC/ABS and PC/PBT is therefore made on the basis of chemical-exposure severity, tensile property retention, and ductile-failure requirements measured under ISO 527-1:2019 after immersion.

For external unpainted parts exposed to weathering, the substitution of PC/ABS with PC+ASA is common because the acrylic ester elastomer in ASA shows better resistance to photo-oxidation than the butadiene phase of ABS. Comparative xenon-arc testing under ISO 4892-2 often shows greater impact retention for PC+ASA after 1000 h, although the exact numerical difference depends on stabilization package, color, and surface gloss. PC/ABS 3009D should not be specified for long-term outdoor UV exposure unless the supplier provides retained-impact data for the exact grade and color.

Comparison Against Neat PC, Neat ABS, and Flame-Retardant PC/ABS Grades

Compared with neat polycarbonate, unfilled PC/ABS demonstrates lower melt viscosity at the same barrel settings, which reduces injection pressure and permits longer flow paths in thin-wall tools. The trade-off is thermal performance: a typical neat PC grade may show heat deflection temperature above 120°C at 1.80 MPa under ISO 75-2:2013, while unfilled PC/ABS commonly falls between 95°C and 115°C. Neat PC also offers better hydrolytic stability and chemical resistance than PC/ABS in aggressive environments, but it is more notch-sensitive at low temperature and requires higher melt temperatures.

Compared with neat ABS, unfilled PC/ABS raises heat deflection temperature and tensile modulus, and it typically gives better impact strength at −30°C when tested under ISO 180/A:2023. The penalty is higher material density and more stringent drying. Neat ABS can often be processed with a simple hot-air hopper dryer, whereas PC/ABS requires desiccant drying to ≤0.02% moisture. In addition, the polycarbonate phase narrows the upper processing window; neat ABS can tolerate brief excursions to higher barrel temperatures more easily than PC/ABS.

Compared with flame-retardant PC/ABS grades, a general-purpose unfilled grade such as 3009D is typically lower in density and higher in tensile modulus because it does not contain a phosphate ester or other flame-retardant package. Phosphorus-based FR grades often contain 8–15% flame-retardant additives, which can increase density by 0.03–0.07 g/cm³ and reduce tensile modulus by 5–15% relative to the non-FR base. The key difference is compliance: an unfilled general-purpose lot may be HB under IEC 60695-11-10:2013, while an FR-modified grade can achieve V-0 at the specified thickness. The 3009D marker should not be read as an FR indication unless the supplier’s yellow card and internal lot testing confirm a V-0 rating.

The commercial suffix 3009D does not communicate a melt-flow index, a UL flame rating, or a specific PC/ABS ratio. It is a supplier-specific commercial grade identifier; direct numerical comparison against other products therefore requires the full certificate of analysis, melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1:2022, tensile data under ISO 527-1:2019, and notched impact data under ISO 180/A:2023. Without those lot-specific values, material substitution based only on the 3009D designation is not technically valid.
