Application of Dongguan Haiyue ABS HY650H-ZG

In automotive interior programs where Dongguan Haiyue ABS HY650H-ZG is specified for non-visible or covered trim structures, the material is introduced as a medium-flow high-impact injection-molding base resin formulated at 100 parts by weight with carbon black masterbatch at 1.5–2.5 phr, process lubricant at 0.2–0.4 phr, and antioxidant package at 0.15–0.3 phr. Pre-drying in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 3–4 h is required to reduce pellet moisture to below 0.05% because residual moisture above this threshold produces splay on textured surfaces and a measurable loss in notched Izod impact under ISO 180/A. Reciprocating screw injection presses with clamp force from 800–1600 t and screw L/D between 20:1–24:1 are employed, with melt temperature 230–250 °C, mold temperature 40–60 °C, injection pressure 70–120 MPa, holding pressure 40–70 MPa, and screw back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa. The downstream production process is executed by sequential valve-gate hot-runner injection to shift weld lines toward low-stress zones, followed by post-mold trimming and optional flame or corona treatment where painted surfaces are required. Compliance is anchored to ISO 3795 for burn rate, VDA 277 for total carbon emissions in interior air-quality testing, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for SVHC communication, and EU ELV Directive 2000/53/EC for lead, cadmium, mercury, and hexavalent chromium restrictions. Terminal component types include door trim panels, B-pillar lower covers, center console side panels, seat side shields, glove box housings, and HVAC duct connectors. Production-scale field data indicate that ocean-freight shipment of ABS granules stored at warehouse relative humidity above 60% increases batch-to-batch splay defect rates if drying time is shortened below 2 h at 80 °C; incoming moisture analysis by Karl Fischer titration is therefore recommended before launch tooling is run.

What governs regrind tolerance in non-flame-retardant electronics enclosure compounds?

Non-flame-retardant ABS such as Dongguan Haiyue ABS HY650H-ZG is limited to UL 94 HB classification unless a separate flame-retardant certification is available; therefore its use in information technology equipment enclosures is constrained to designs where the fire enclosure assessment under IEC 62368-1:2018 permits an HB material or where the enclosure is not a fire enclosure. Regrind fraction is the critical formulation variable: in-plant runner and gate regrind is added at 10–25 wt% of total charge with virgin resin at 100 parts by weight, pigment masterbatch at 2–4 phr, and internal lubricant at 0.2–0.4 phr; above 25 wt%, surface gloss instability and knit-line impact reduction are observed in production. The downstream process uses high-speed injection presses of 120–400 t clamp force, injection speed 150–300 mm/s, melt temperature 220–250 °C, mold temperature 50–70 °C, and cooling time 15–25 s. Hot-runner valve gates are sequenced to move weld lines away from snap-fit bosses and screw bosses, and pressure-holding profiles are set by short-shot studies on a 24-cavity router housing tool. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 apply to global electronics freight; electrical safety compliance is assessed on the final assembly, not on raw resin. Terminal product types include Wi-Fi access point housings, router top covers, set-top box enclosures, UPS front bezels, and cable modem shells. Published data for this specific grade under closed-loop regrind conditions is limited; the 10–25 wt% window is a general ABS injection-molding process limit that must be confirmed with lot-specific melt flow checks under ISO 1133-1 at 220 °C/10 kg.

When appliance control-panel housings are designed with long flow paths and thin wall sections below 2.5 mm, the material is processed with rapid injection speeds and sequential valve gating to prevent gas traps at the last-filled cavity positions. Formulation starts from ABS HY650H-ZG at 100 parts by weight with pre-colored masterbatch at 1–3 phr; antistatic masterbatch is added only at 3–8 phr where surface resistivity control is specified, but this addition reduces notched Izod impact and should be validated under ISO 180/A. Drying at 80 °C for 2–4 h to below 0.05% moisture is mandatory before hopper loading. Injection equipment includes multicavity hot-runner molds on 200–600 t presses; melt temperature is 220–250 °C, mold temperature 50–70 °C, cycle time 30–50 s. Surface gloss is checked by ISO 2813 at 60° as a QC reference for visible surfaces. Compliance is anchored to IEC 60335-1:2020 for household appliance safety, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006; direct food-contact applications are excluded because this grade is not certified under EU 10/2011. Terminal component types include air purifier housings, vacuum cleaner covers, dehumidifier side panels, electronic mop shells, and washing machine base frames. Field observation from rectangular housings longer than 600 mm indicates that differential shrinkage causes warpage above 3 mm if sequential valve gating is omitted; post-mold cooling fixtures are used when wall thickness is 2.0 mm and aspect ratio exceeds 3:1.

Powertool housing molds, sub-0.05% moisture, and uniform shear history

In power tool housings, the limiting process variable is uniform shear history in low-compression screw geometries rather than melt temperature alone; screws with L/D of 20:1–24:1 and compression ratio between 2.0:1–2.5:1 are specified, and shot-to-shot cushion is held at 3–5 mm to prevent short shots in ribbed sections. The material is formulated at 100 parts by weight ABS HY650H-ZG with carbon black or color masterbatch at 1–2 phr and lubricant at 0.3–0.5 phr; glass fiber reinforcement is not recommended unless mold-flow and impact studies demonstrate acceptable weld-line behavior in boss areas, because fiber orientation at weld lines can reduce notched Izod impact relative to unfilled material. The downstream process uses injection presses of 200–600 t clamp force, melt temperature 230–250 °C, mold temperature 40–80 °C, injection pressure 80–130 MPa, and holding pressure 50–80 MPa. Pre-drying at 80 °C for 3–4 h to below 0.05% moisture is required. Compliance is anchored to IEC 62841-1:2015 for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, the EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC for structural enclosure integrity, and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU. Terminal product types include drill motor housings, angle grinder gear housings, orbital sander bodies, electric planer handles, and heat gun housings. Drop impact behavior is evaluated under IEC 60068-2-31 or customer-specific procedures, and field returns from early tooling often show crack initiation at gate vestiges if gates are not recessed below the mating surface.

Because office furniture components are subjected to cyclic loading and creep deformation rather than single-peak impact, material selection prioritizes long-term strain tolerance and cleaning-agent resistance. ABS HY650H-ZG is evaluated for chair shells and structural supports where dimensional stability is required; formulation uses 100 parts by weight ABS, color masterbatch at 2–4 phr, UV stabilizer at 0.3–0.5 phr for indirect daylight exposure, and lubricant at 0.2–0.4 phr. Injection molding is performed on 450–1200 t presses with melt temperature 220–250 °C and mold temperature 40–60 °C; thick chair shells above 4 mm nominal wall use gas-assisted injection or low-pressure structural foam with nitrogen at 0.2–0.5 MPa to reduce sink marks at rib intersections. Compliance is anchored to ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017 and EN 1335-1:2020 for office work chair fatigue and load testing, plus RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. Terminal product types include ergonomic task chair outer shells, lumbar support shells, conference chair back frames, monitor stand bases, and office drawer trim. Humidity aging at 50 °C/95% RH for 168 h is used as a QC precondition; published data for this specific grade under this conditioning is limited, but gloss loss and tensile strength retention should be confirmed per ISO 527-2.

When EN 71-3 migration limits dictate pigment selection in children’s construction components

If children’s construction sets require compliance with EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021, ASTM F963-23, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Annex XVII, only approved heavy-metal-free pigment masterbatches are selected; lead and cadmium carriers are prohibited even below visual effect thresholds because elemental migration limits are measured on the final molded article. Formulation uses ABS HY650H-ZG at 100 parts by weight, certified toy-grade color masterbatch at 1–3 phr, and processing lubricant at 0.2–0.4 phr; regrind is limited to 10 wt% of total charge and must be traceable to the same color lot to avoid migration profile shifts. The downstream process employs high-cavitation hot-runner molds with 32–64 cavities, clamp force 100–250 t, injection speed 100–200 mm/s, melt temperature 210–240 °C, mold temperature 40–60 °C, and cycle time 15–25 s. Terminal product types include building block baseplates, construction set connector components, toy activity panel bases, and board game tray shells. Published data for this specific grade in toy contact is limited; certification requires migration testing on the intended final component in accordance with EN 71-3 or ASTM F963 digest procedures.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Haiyue ABS HY650H-ZG is an injection-moulding grade of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer supplied under the grade designation HY650H-ZG. The continuous phase is styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer; the dispersed phase consists of polybutadiene rubber particles grafted with SAN. The terpolymer is commonly described by CAS registry number 9003-56-9. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and the numerical windows quoted in this technical note are representative of industrially available high-impact ABS rather than certified lot-specific values. The supplier’s certificate of analysis and the official product datasheet should be retrieved for guaranteed values.

The grade is sold as pellet feedstock for conventional screw plasticating injection machines and is not positioned as a transparent ABS, an electroplating-grade ABS, or a PC/ABS alloy. Bulk density of ABS pellets is commonly 0.55 g/cm³ to 0.65 g/cm³. The principal formulation levers that separate ABS grades are rubber particle size distribution, effective rubber-phase volume, SAN molecular weight, and the type and amount of internal lubricant. None of these variables can be inferred reliably from the grade code alone.

What Distinguishes HY650H-ZG from General-Purpose and High-Flow ABS Grades?

General-purpose ABS grades are formulated for balanced flow and impact. High-impact ABS grades increase the effective rubber volume, which reduces melt flow and tensile modulus but raises notched impact strength. High-flow ABS grades use lower SAN molecular weight and higher lubricant loading to increase spiral flow; the penalty is usually lower impact strength and lower heat distortion. HY650H-ZG is placed in the high-impact segment by the limited trade literature available, but the exact melt-volume-flow rate has not been published in an English-language datasheet. Users should not substitute HY650H-ZG for a high-flow ABS in parts with wall thickness below 1.0 mm or flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratio above 200:1 without first measuring spiral flow on the production mould.

The table summarises representative property windows for ABS subclasses at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity after conditioning per ISO 291:2008. The values are not lot-specific. Compared with PC/ABS, high-impact ABS normally exhibits lower Vicat softening temperature and lower notched impact at -30 °C, but also lower melt viscosity. Standard ABS has low light transmission and limited resistance to ketones, esters, aromatic hydrocarbons, and chlorinated solvents. Moulded parts exposed to acetone or toluene may fail by environmental stress cracking; compatibility testing per ISO 22088-1:2006 or ASTM D543-21 is required for solvent-contact applications.

Before the first heat, ABS of this class must be dried in a desiccant dryer to a residual moisture level below 0.05 wt%. Typical drying conditions are 80 °C to 90 °C for 2 h to 4 h with a dew point of -30 °C or lower. At relative humidity above 60%, pre-drying is mandatory; otherwise pellet moisture can exceed 0.1 wt% within 8 h. Hopper residence time on the machine should not exceed 1 h unless the hopper is sealed and blanketed with dry air.

Production injection moulding of high-impact ABS is commonly performed on three-plate cold-runner tools with a general-purpose polyolefin screw or a low-compression ABS screw. Barrel set-points from rear to nozzle are typically 210 °C, 220 °C, 230 °C, and 240 °C, with nozzle temperature 235 °C. Melt temperature should be measured with an insertion probe and kept below 250 °C to limit yellowing and residual monomer release. Mould surface temperature is normally maintained at 30 °C to 80 °C; higher mould temperatures improve knit-line strength and surface gloss but increase cooling time by approximately 2 s to 4 s per 10 °C increase. Injection velocity is set to fill 90% to 95% of the cavity before transfer to hold pressure. Hold pressure is typically 40 MPa to 80 MPa hydraulic. Back pressure of 0.5 MPa to 1.5 MPa is applied to homogenise the melt. A screw with 20:1 to 25:1 L/D ratio and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 is generally suitable. Screw decompression should be minimised to avoid air entrapment.

Regrind use alters impact retention and colour stability. In production-scale trials reported for high-impact ABS on a 40 mm twin-screw extruder with 36:1 L/D, regrind levels above 30 wt% reduced Charpy notched impact by 10% to 20% and increased yellowness index by 2 to 5 units after three heat histories. Lot-to-lot variation in melt volume-flow rate should be monitored by capillary rheometry or melt indexer before regrind is introduced. Published data for this specific grade under those exact regrind conditions is limited.

Melt Rheology, Thermal Distortion, and Notched Impact Response

ABS melt is pseudoplastic. The power-law index for high-impact ABS at shear rates from 100 s⁻¹ to 10,000 s⁻¹ is approximately 0.25 to 0.40; viscosity at injection shear rates is therefore significantly lower than capillary viscosity values measured at 1 s⁻¹. This shear-thinning behaviour is important for mould-filling simulation. If simulation software requires Cross-Williams-Landel-Ferry parameters, the temperature shift should be verified with rheological data at 220 °C, 240 °C, and 260 °C.

Mould shrinkage of high-impact ABS is anisotropic: 0.4% to 0.8% per ISO 294-4:2018, with lower values parallel to flow and higher values transverse. Shrinkage can increase by 0.05% to 0.15% when regrind content is increased or when hold pressure is reduced below 40 MPa. Heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa load for high-impact ABS is typically 85 °C to 100 °C per ISO 75-2:2013 method Af. Vicat softening temperature VST/B50 is usually 90 °C to 106 °C per ISO 306:2022. Continuous service above 75 °C is not generally recommended for unstabilised grades because oxidative ageing and creep can reduce impact strength. Annealing at 80 °C for 2 h may reduce internal stress but can cause dimensional relaxation of approximately 0.1%.

At 23 °C, Charpy notched impact strength of high-impact ABS typically ranges from 15 kJ/m² to 35 kJ/m² under ISO 179-1:2010 using edgewise specimens. At -30 °C, the window narrows to 8 kJ/m² to 15 kJ/m². For applications exposed to dynamic loading below -20 °C, a low-temperature instrumented falling-dart test such as ASTM D3763-18 should be performed because Charpy data alone may not predict ductile-to-brittle transitions in moulded parts.

Thermal Degradation Begins at 280 °C and Is Accelerated by Residence Time

Heat exposure above 280 °C initiates depolymerisation of SAN and oxidative degradation of polybutadiene particles. Decomposition products can include styrene, acrylonitrile, and butadiene-derived hydrocarbons. At melt temperatures above 260 °C, visible yellowing can occur within 5 min to 10 min of residence time. The practical melt-temperature ceiling for high-impact ABS is therefore set at 250 °C for normal cycles and 240 °C for thin-wall or hot-runner applications where residence time may exceed 10 min.

Injection moulders should monitor melt cushion and barrel residence time. In hot-runner systems with 8-drop manifolds, dead spots can increase residence time above 15 min; degraded material appears as brown streaks or black specks. If degradation occurs, the melt mass-flow rate can increase and notched impact value can fall by 30% or more due to rubber-particle crosslinking and matrix chain scission. No published degradation kinetics specific to HY650H-ZG is available, so processor validation on the actual tool is required.

When the Grade Is Specified for Electrical Housings and Consumer Equipment

Flammability classification of HY650H-ZG must be confirmed on the supplier’s UL Yellow Card. ABS without flame-retardant additives is generally classified HB under UL 94; a V-0 rating at 1.5 mm requires a flame-retarded formulation. The grade designation does not by itself establish a V-0 or 5VA rating, and colour concentrates or regrind can alter the classification.

Comparative tracking index for general-purpose ABS is typically 500 V to 600 V under IEC 60112:2020. Volume resistivity is typically 10¹⁴ Ω·cm to 10¹⁶ Ω·cm under IEC 62631-3-1:2016. Surface resistivity can fall below 10¹⁴ Ω when antistatic mould-release agents are present. Dielectric strength at 2.0 mm is typically 20 kV/mm to 30 kV/mm under IEC 60243-1:2019. For creepage and clearance design, the material group under IEC 60664-1:2020 must be determined from the tracking index. High-impact ABS typically falls into material group I or II depending on CTI; this must be verified for the specific compound.

If the part is specified for outdoor use, UV stabilisation is necessary. Standard ABS exposed to xenon-arc weathering per ISO 4892-2:2013 can show yellowness index increase greater than 15 units and impact retention below 50% after 500 h unless UV-stabilised. Surface energy of ABS is typically 34 mN/m before treatment and can be raised to 40 mN/m to 46 mN/m by corona or plasma treatment for painting or adhesive bonding. Bond strengths should be tested per ISO 4587:2003 or ASTM D3163-01 because internal mould-release additives can interfere with adhesion.

Compliance claims for Dongguan Haiyue ABS HY650H-ZG should be verified against the supplier’s safety data sheet and REACH declaration under Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006. The grade may contain additives subject to EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II, and compliance should be documented per lot. Processing fumes above 280 °C may release styrene and acrylonitrile; local exhaust ventilation should maintain styrene below the national 8-hour occupational exposure limit of 20 ppm. The material should be stored in sealed bags below 40 °C and protected from UV light. Moisture absorption after opening should be monitored by Karl Fischer titration, with a target below 0.05 wt% before moulding. The shelf life recommended by many ABS suppliers is 12 months from the date of manufacture, after which drying and melt-flow verification are required.
