Application of Dongguan Guojia ABS 121H-9721WT

Injection-moulded interlocking building-block and constructional-toy components at 1.6–2.4 mm nominal wall thickness constitute one of the most demanding white ABS applications for 121H-9721WT because the finished part must retain clutch force after repeated assembly and disassembly while satisfying elemental migration limits. In the production compound, 121H-9721WT is used at 98.0–99.5 wt%, with 0.5–1.5 wt% tint masterbatch introduced only when a custom white shade is specified, and 0.2–0.5 wt% external lubricant masterbatch; the lubricant is limited to the lowest level that allows stable ejection because excessive zinc stearate can alter friction coefficients at the block interface. Compliance is verified under EN 71-3:2019+A1:2021 for migration of 19 elements, ASTM F963-23 for the United States market, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU including the (EU) 2015/863 phthalate additions. Drying on a desiccant dryer at 80–85°C for 2–4 h reduces moisture below 0.05%; melt temperature is held at 220–240°C, and mould temperature at 40–60°C. Injection moulding uses screw L/D 20:1–24:1, compression ratio 2.0–2.5:1, injection pressure 70–120 MPa, holding pressure 40–60 MPa, and back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa. High-cavitation multi-plate stack moulds with 64–128 cavities and valve-gated hot runners are typical, with clamp force 120–300 t; clutch features require tight dimensional control of ±0.02 mm. Terminal parts include interlocking building bricks, gear-hub sets, rail guides, and connector pins for constructional toy systems.

Does 121H-9721WT Hold White Shade Uniformity Across Multi-Cavity Appliance Housings?

Small-appliance enclosures such as electric kettle bodies, rice cooker side panels, and vacuum cleaner housing shells require white shade consistency below ΔE 1.0 across 4–8 cavity hot-runner moulds and limited yellowing after repeated thermal cycling. In these parts, 121H-9721WT is compounded at 97.0–99.0 wt% with 1.0–2.0 wt% shade correction masterbatch and 0.2–0.5 wt% antioxidant/process stabilizer; pigment loading above 3.0 wt% is not used because dispersion limits can reduce notched Izod impact in 23°C testing. End-product safety is assessed under IEC 60335-1:2020, particularly clauses 22.8 and 30.2; electrical accessories must meet the applicable IEC 62368-1:2018 or UL 94 HB flammability classification only where the end-product standard permits a non-flame-retardant styrenic enclosure. Drying is longer than for toys at 85°C for 3–4 h to below 0.05% moisture because surface gloss is more sensitive to silver streaks. Injection moulding parameters are melt temperature 230–245°C, mould temperature 55–70°C, injection pressure 80–130 MPa, holding pressure 45–70 MPa, screw speed 60–100 rpm, and back pressure 0.8–1.5 MPa. Sequential valve-gate hot runners prevent shade shift in low-pressure weld lines and clamp force is calculated at 5–7 kN/cm² of projected area. Finished products include electric kettle lower bodies, rice cooker side shells, vacuum cleaner canister housings, and small kitchen appliance covers.

For 1.0–1.8 mm thin-wall white router, access-point, and set-top-box enclosures, the processing window of 121H-9721WT narrows because high-speed filling above 250 mm/s can increase melt temperature by viscous dissipation, producing yellowing on unpainted white surfaces. The production formulation contains 97.0–99.5 wt% 121H-9721WT, 0.5–1.5 wt% tint correction masterbatch for approved OEM white, and 0.3–0.5 wt% phenolic/phosphite antioxidant; the compound is not flame-retardant and must not be specified where UL 94 V-0 or 5VB is required. Compliance for finished devices includes IEC 62368-1:2018 for audio/video and information technology equipment, UL 94 HB for flame propagation, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and mechanical property baselines determined by ISO 527-2, ISO 178:2019, and ISO 180:2019. Drying is set at 80–85°C for 4 h to a moisture content below 0.06%; higher residual moisture causes splay and silver streaking at gate velocities above 180 mm/s. Melt temperature is limited to 238–255°C, mould temperature to 55–80°C, filling time to 1.0–2.0 s, and holding pressure to 60–90 MPa. Back pressure is deliberately reduced to 0.4–0.8 MPa to avoid frictional heating, and short-shot validation with cavity pressure transducers is used to switch over at 95–98% volume filled. Post-mould annealing at 80°C for 1–2 h may be required to relax gate and weld-line stress in snap-fit features. Published data for this specific white 121H-9721WT configuration at wall thickness below 1.2 mm with highly textured surfaces is limited; local fill pressure should be verified by instrumented cavity trials because texture replication and white shade can shift with packing density. Terminal products include wireless router shells, access-point covers, set-top-box enclosures, cable-modem housings, and HDMI switch covers.

Grain Retention and Low-Gloss Appearance in 121H-9721WT Automotive Interior Lower Trim

Automotive interior lower trim programmes use 121H-9721WT where a white or light-coloured moulded base is painted or coated after moulding and where the as-moulded grain must remain free of gloss read-through above internal stiffening ribs. The compound is loaded at 96.0–99.0 wt% with 0.5–1.5 wt% automotive-approved tint masterbatch and 0.3–0.6 wt% UV/HALS stabilizer masterbatch; plasticizer-free, low-emission additive packages are mandatory for interior air quality requirements. Compliance is verified under FMVSS 302 and ISO 3795 for horizontal flammability, VDA 278:2011 for VOC and FOG emissions, REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, and the Global Automotive Declarable Substance List. Injection moulding is performed on 800–1500 t clamp machines with melt temperature 220–240°C, mould temperature 40–60°C, injection pressure 80–120 MPa, holding pressure 50–70 MPa, and back pressure 0.6–1.2 MPa. Sequential valve gating is used to position weld lines away from visible grain surfaces and to reduce shear-induced gloss variability. Mould texturing is polished to an average roughness specified by the automotive OEM, and gloss is measured at 60° geometry after moulding; local hot-spot or induction heating may be required near venting areas because knit lines in high-flow ABS can appear as gloss contrast even when dimensional fill is complete. Bonding or painting requires cleaning with isopropanol and, for rigid paints, an adhesion promoter validated for ABS substrates; unpainted lower trim must not be exposed to continuous direct sunlight unless UV stabilizer level is increased and durability is tested under accelerated weathering. Terminal parts include glove box housings, cowl side trim, lower instrument panel covers, and B/C-pillar lower covers.

Boss cracking at screw fastening points in 0.8–2.5 mm wall-section printer and point-of-sale housings is controlled by the material's elongation at break and by boss geometry rather than by direct substitution with a higher-impact polymer. The formulation uses 96.0–99.0 wt% 121H-9721WT, 1.0–2.0 wt% colour masterbatch, and 0.2–0.4 wt% processing aid; regrind is limited to 5 wt% for high-gloss appearance surfaces and to 15 wt% for non-appearance structural brackets. Compliance includes IEC 62368-1:2018 for office electronic equipment, UL 94 HB, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and tensile elongation measured by ISO 527-2. Drying is set at 80–85°C for 3–4 h. Melt temperature is 235–250°C, mould temperature 50–70°C, injection pressure 70–110 MPa, and holding pressure 50–70 MPa. Boss outside diameter is held to 2.0–2.5 times the screw diameter, wall thickness to 40–60% of the adjacent nominal wall, and base radius to at least 0.5 mm; triangular gussets are placed on two sides. Ultrasonic insertion of brass inserts uses insert preheat at 120–150°C and low amplitude to prevent hairline cracks around the boss root. Terminal products include printer side panels, POS terminal enclosures, desktop scanner housings, and white office equipment covers.

When 121H-9721WT Is Extruded as White Sheet for Thermoformed Sanitary Components

Extrusion of 121H-9721WT into 2.5–5.0 mm white sheet for vacuum or pressure thermoforming is specified only where the component is not in contact with drinking water or food, because published migration data for this pre-coloured grade under long-term aqueous contact are limited and direct food-contact or potable-water approvals should not be assumed. The sheet formulation contains 90–97 wt% 121H-9721WT, 1–3 wt% tint/UV stabilizer masterbatch, and 0.2–0.6 wt% antioxidant; regrind from thermoforming trim may be used up to 15 wt% only when the material is heat-stable after three extrusion passes and the regrind is not visible on cosmetic surfaces. Regulatory verification includes REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and the applicable non-food-contact requirements of the finished sanitary product. Sheet extrusion uses a single-screw extruder with L/D 32:1, barrier screw, melt pump, flex-lip die, and three-roll calendering stack with roll temperatures 85–100°C; die temperatures are typically 210–240°C. Thermoforming is performed after heating the sheet surface to 155–180°C, with plug-assisted forming to control wall thinning, mould temperature 75–95°C, and cooling before ejection. Terminal components include bathroom wall panels, vanity panels, toilet seat cladding, and shower wall liners; components installed near high-temperature fixtures require additional dimensional verification because heat deflection temperature under load for standard ABS may be below 100°C at 1.8 MPa when tested per ISO 75-2.

In returnable packaging and material-handling trays, 121H-9721WT is selected when repeated impact at low temperatures, washdown compatibility with neutral detergents, and white colour retention are required for non-food industrial logistics. The addition ratio in production includes 75–95 wt% virgin 121H-9721WT, 5–20 wt% approved in-house regrind, 1.0–2.5 wt% white masterbatch, and 0.2–0.5 wt% processing lubricant; regrind above 20 wt% is not recommended because notched impact at -20°C can degrade below the level required for tote drop tests. Compliance includes REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006, RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU, and physical property baselines determined by ISO 180:2019 and ISO 527-2. Injection moulding uses wall sections of 3.0–5.0 mm, melt temperature 225–240°C, mould temperature 35–60°C, injection pressure 60–100 MPa, holding pressure 35–55 MPa, and back pressure 0.5–1.0 MPa; rib thickness is maintained at 50–60% of the adjacent wall with root radius 0.5–1.0 mm. Cooling time is calculated by wall-thickness squared relationships and ejection temperature below 70°C to reduce post-demoulding distortion. Terminal products include returnable tote boxes, dunnage trays, distribution container lids, and internal material-handling trays.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Guojia ABS 121H-9721WT is supplied as an opaque white injection-moulding grade of acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene terpolymer. The designation combines the 121H high-impact base resin with the 9721WT white pre-colour suffix; published data for this exact pre-compounded configuration is limited, so the following nominal values are drawn from the 121H base-grade literature and from industrial behaviour of titanium-dioxide-bearing ABS white variants. The material is used where an uncoated white appearance, medium melt flow, and intermediate toughness are required without post-mould painting: small appliance housings, white domestic appliance trim, electrical tool casings, point-of-sale equipment enclosures, and office machine covers. The pre-coloured opaque form removes let-down colorant mixing at the press, but the pigment phase also changes melt viscosity and impact transfer relative to uncoloured 121H resin.

Nominal density is 1.03–1.05 g/cm³ per ISO 1183-1:2019. Melt flow index measured at 220 °C and 10 kg falls in the medium-flow region; the value is typically 8–14 g/10 min depending on lot and test method. Tensile yield stress is 42–47 MPa per ISO 527-2/1A/50, and flexural modulus is 2100–2300 MPa per ISO 178. Charpy notched impact energy at 23 °C is 25–35 kJ/m² per ISO 179-1/1eA; at −30 °C the range is 8–12 kJ/m². Heat deflection temperature under 1.8 MPa is 88–94 °C per ISO 75-2/A. Mould shrinkage is 0.4–0.7% per ISO 294-4. These ranges align with the unfilled 121H family; the 9721WT white lot can shift tensile modulus and flow by a few percent relative to natural material.

What Distinguishes the 9721WT White Pre-Colour from Natural 121H and from Faster-Flowing ABS?

The primary difference between 9721WT and uncoloured 121H is the presence of white pigment dispersed into the melt during compounding. In white ABS grades based on high-impact 121H, the mineral pigment phase raises melt viscosity at low shear rates and can reduce notched impact energy by a small but measurable amount relative to natural resin at the same rubber content. Compounders compensate by adjusting the butadiene-rich elastomer phase or by limiting pigment concentration; consequently the 9721WT lot certificate should be checked against base 121H datasheets rather than treating the two products as interchangeable. Compared with general-purpose ABS grades, 121H-9721WT retains the 121H family’s higher emulsified rubber content and therefore higher impact resistance. Compared with high-flow ABS grades, the melt flow at 220 °C and 10 kg is lower, so filling of long thin-wall sections below approximately 1.2 mm may require additional gates or controlled higher injection velocity. Relative to high-heat ABS, the heat deflection temperature is lower, and continuous service above 85–90 °C is not characteristic. Relative to PC/ABS, the material shows lower low-temperature ductility and lower notched impact energy but can be processed on conventional ABS barrel profiles without the higher drying temperatures and screw torque of polycarbonate blends.

U.S. laboratories may record tensile yield per ASTM D638-14 using Type I specimens, flexural modulus per ASTM D790-17, and Izod notched impact per ASTM D256-10(2018). ASTM and ISO values are not directly interchangeable because pendulum impact geometries and specimen notch radii differ; conversion between Charpy and Izod is not thermodynamically rigorous.

Property and test method Unit ABS 121H-9721WT nominal General-purpose ABS reference High-flow ABS reference

The comparison data are nominal ranges for unfilled ABS families; they are not lot-specific values. Table 1 illustrates why the product is selected when impact resistance is the limiting failure mode. The 121H family’s Charpy notched impact energy of 25–35 kJ/m² at 23 °C is substantially above general-purpose ABS and high-flow ABS; however, the melt flow is lower. In multi-cavity tools, moulders may compensate by raising melt temperature within the allowed 240 °C limit or by using additional gates rather than selecting a high-flow ABS that may fail impact specifications. The pigment phase in white 9721WT can shift notched impact downward relative to natural 121H by roughly 5–10%; therefore wall thickness and rib radii at impact points should not be reduced without first-article trial confirmation.

Drying and Injection Moulding Limits for White Thin-Wall Components

Pre-drying is mandatory because moisture in ABS is evolved at the melt front during injection. Production-scale lines using desiccant dryers with inlet air dew point of ≤ −30 °C prevent moisture-related surface splay. The pellets should be dried at 80–85 °C for 2–4 h. Drying above 90 °C should be avoided because white grades can develop pellet-surface sticking and slight yellowing. Moisture content should be reduced below 0.03% by weight; ISO 15512 can be used for verification. In high-humidity plants, hopper dryers that cannot maintain dew point below −20 °C are inadequate for white thin-wall production.

Barrel settings from feed to nozzle are typically 190–210 °C, 210–220 °C, 220–230 °C, 220–235 °C, and nozzle 215–235 °C. Melt temperature should not exceed 240 °C, and melt residence time at 240 °C should be kept below 6 min. On 80–200 t toggle and hydraulic machines with 30–40 mm general-purpose screws, degraded white ABS is observed as an ivory-to-yellow shift and a simultaneous drop of notched Izod; purging with a styrenic purge compound is used when the line stops for more than 15 min. Hot runner set points are 220–245 °C; manifold temperatures should not exceed the front-zone set point by more than 10 °C to avoid gate stringing and colour shift.

Mould temperature is set at 40–70 °C. A wall thickness of 2.0–3.0 mm can be filled at 0.5–2.5 s; for 1.2 mm thin wall, fill velocities should be increased but controlled because shear rate at the gate should remain below 50,000 s⁻¹ in unfilled ABS. Backpressure is maintained at 0.5–1.5 MPa to homogenize the pre-colour dispersion. Backpressure above 2.0 MPa on a 40 mm screw does not improve colour uniformity and raises melt temperature. Screw rotation is 40–80 rpm; plasticating speed is matched to cycle time so that the screw cushion remains 3–5 mm and the cycle uses 30–70% of shot capacity. Use of a general-purpose screw with L/D 20:1 and compression ratio 2.5:1 is sufficient; high-shear barrier screws are not required but can be used if melt temperature is monitored.

Regrind use should be limited to 20% if white colour consistency is critical; higher regrind fractions may shift yellowness index. Dimensional control follows the styrenic shrinkage range; tooling should be cut for 0.5% average shrinkage and cavity-specific trials should establish the exact value because pigment loading, gate freeze time, and mould temperature interact. For assemblies that demand tight clearance, cavity pressure sensors in 4–6 cavity tools have shown that packing pressure decay must be complete before gate freeze; hold pressure is typically 60–80% of peak injection pressure and held for 3–8 s depending on wall thickness. White pre-colour grades generally show a narrower gloss window than natural ABS because the pigment scatters surface irregularities.

When Regulatory Data and Lot-Lot Verification Are Required

Regulatory compliance for ABS 121H-9721WT should be confirmed from the supplier’s lot certificate because pigment concentrates can influence restricted-substance declarations. The base 121H family usually carries a UL 94 HB classification; the white variant is not flame retardant, and the exact UL Yellow Card must be verified for the 9721WT colour lot rather than assumed from natural resin. RoHS compliance is assessed under EU 2011/65/EU as amended by (EU) 2015/863 using IEC 62321-5:2013 for lead, cadmium, and mercury, IEC 62321-6:2015 for PBB and PBDE, and IEC 62321-8:2017 for phthalates DEHP, BBP, DBP, and DIBP. REACH Regulation 1907/2006 SVHC declarations vary by lot and should be obtained from the compounder through the sales specification.

Chemical compatibility should be tested per ASTM D543-20 or ISO 4599:2002 for the intended contact fluid; ABS is attacked by ketones, esters, and aromatic solvents, and exposure to acetone or methyl ethyl ketone can produce environmental stress cracking. Mild acids and alkalis are generally tolerated at room temperature. The white pigment phase does not materially alter chemical resistance. The 9721WT white pigment improves opacity but does not provide significant ultraviolet stabilization; uncoated exterior parts can yellow and lose impact after prolonged UV exposure. For outdoor use, an ASA or UV-stabilised grade should be evaluated. On production lines where white enclosure parts are being converted from painted natural ABS to pre-coloured 121H-9721WT, first-article trials should include notched impact testing at the gate, mid-flow, and end-of-fill positions because pigment distribution can be affected by long hot-runner paths. The material is not recommended for continuous hot-water immersion above 80 °C in dishwasher interiors, for transparent lenses, or for parts requiring a 5VA flame rating. When a higher heat deflection temperature is required, an ASA or heat-stabilised ABS grade should be tested. Published data for this exact white configuration is limited; the stated ranges are nominal and must be checked against the lot certificate.
