Application of Dongguan Fenglong PC/ABS SL2000

Dongguan Fenglong PC/ABS SL2000 is evaluated throughout as a flame-retardant injection-moulding PC/ABS grade. The downstream settings are separated by end-use fire-test boundary, mechanical load after conditioning, and chemical exposure, not by generic market category. Because lot-specific melt flow rate, UL Yellow Card thickness, and moisture specification take precedence over any published range, the following values are production-reference windows. They should be locked against the certificate of analysis, first-article trial data, and the relevant product standard before release.

Thin-Wall Adapter Housings, UL 94 Retention, and the 1.2 mm Boundary

USB-C wall adapters, GaN travel chargers, and power-bank internal cassette frames are moulded from SL2000 at nominal wall thicknesses of 1.0 mm to 1.2 mm. The fire-enclosure discipline under IEC 62368-1:2018 requires validation at the thinnest wall of the finished assembly, not merely at the material supplier’s listed thickness. If the grade is certified to UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, a 1.0 mm snap tower, living hinge, or pin-support boss still requires separate vertical-burn evaluation unless the Yellow Card explicitly covers that reduced thickness. Production trial data from thin-wall charger tools show that flame-retardant package degradation is more sensitive to residence time than to setpoint temperature alone.

Drying on a desiccant dryer with dew point of -40 °C to -50 °C, inlet air at 80 °C to 85 °C, for 4 h is the minimum when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Target moisture is 0.02 wt % or lower before the screw. Air-shot melt temperature should be held in the 245 °C to 265 °C band; barrel setpoints alone are not reliable on electric toggle machines with rapid screw recovery. Mould temperature is preferably 70 °C to 85 °C, with fill time from 0.15 s to 0.30 s and pack pressure in the 80 MPa to 110 MPa range. Clamp force in the 800 kN to 1,200 kN class is adequate for multi-cavity adapter shells, provided the projected area and cavity balance are confirmed by short-shot progression.

Regrind from sprues and runners is capped at 15 wt % in charger enclosures because higher additions push the total afterflame time upward at 1.2 mm wall and introduce visible splay, especially near pin openings and ejector marks. Barrel residence time above 250 °C should not exceed 5 min; longer exposure degrades the flame-retardant system and can produce silver streaks that cannot be corrected by raising mould temperature. Terminal-product acceptance includes UL 94 vertical burn after conditioning at 23 °C and 50 % RH for 48 h, screw-torque pull-out on heat-stake bosses, and drop impact from 0.8 m onto concrete as a production-line audit rather than a type-test.

In seat side shields, glove-box outer carriers, and lower B-pillar trim, the controlling specification is not vertical flame classification but low-temperature multiaxial ductility after thermal ageing. SL2000 is processed as a neat PC/ABS without structural fibre; the moulder should fully separate automotive interior regrind from electronics-grade regrind because contamination from flexible PVC edge trim, lubricants, or exterior-grade UV masterbatch changes low-temperature impact behaviour. Compliance is driven by FMVSS 302 horizontal burn rate, VDA 277 volatile organic compound limits, DIN 75201-B fogging at 100 °C, and OEM-specific odour criteria.

Low-temperature puncture performance is screened according to ISO 6603-2:2000 at -30 °C on plaques cut from the moulded part, not on edge-gated tensile bars. Large trim moulds with projected areas above 600 mm × 1000 mm require sequential valve-gate hot runners; melt temperature is held at 250 °C to 270 °C, mould temperature at 75 °C to 90 °C, and clamp force often falls in the 8,000 kN to 12,000 kN class. Colour masterbatch is limited to 2 wt %, carbon black to 1 wt %, because higher loadings reduce falling-dart impact at -20 °C by observable margin in side-shield trials. Phthalate-containing PVC edge profiles and amine-cured polyurethane adhesives should be excluded from the assembly because they cause stress crazing at boss bases and clip towers under sustained load.

Why Does SL2000 Occupy the Middle Zone in AC Wallbox Enclosures and Charging Coupler Frames?

AC wallbox front covers, internal electronics mounting plates, and charging connector body frames use PC/ABS not because it provides the highest continuous-use temperature, but because it combines thin-wall flame retardance with sufficient impact resistance for indoor and sheltered outdoor deployment. The product standard IEC 61851-1:2017 does not by itself specify a material grade; it forces the enclosure to satisfy mechanical impact, electrical insulation, and end-product fire requirements simultaneously. For an unventilated wallbox cover with wall thickness 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm, UL 94 V-0 at the moulded wall is the starting point, followed by glow-wire test under IEC 60695-2-11 at 850 °C for unattended equipment surfaces. Outdoor-facing parts are additionally screened for impact resistance to IEC 62262, commonly IK08, which imposes 5 J impact on exposed surfaces at ambient temperature.

In moulding trials for flat wallbox covers, melt temperature is kept between 245 °C and 260 °C, mould temperature between 70 °C and 85 °C. Sequential valve-gated hot runners are preferred over cold runner systems because large flat panels show clear flow-directional shrinkage in the 0.5 % to 0.7 % range; cavity dimensions should be cut from first-round shrinkage data, not from generic PC/ABS database values. Regrind is capped at 10 wt % when glow-wire and UL 94 certification are to be maintained without re-testing. Clamp force normally falls between 1,500 kN and 4,000 kN depending on projected area and cavity count.

Unmodified PC/ABS oxidises under UV exposure, so a wallbox enclosure specified for outdoor installation without a painted surface or UV-stabilised capstock should be screened under ISO 4892-2:2013 method A, cycle 1. Published data for SL2000 in long-term outdoor shell applications is limited; the cautious path is to treat the material as indoor/sheltered only unless the OEM has run full weathering validation. Flexible PVC cable grommets and adhesive gaskets containing low-molecular-weight phthalate plasticisers should not contact the PC/ABS frame under compressive load, because plasticiser migration combined with moulded-in stress produces crazing around screw bosses and snap grooves. Terminal-product checks include glow-wire pass/fail at 850 °C, IK impact at -10 °C if outdoor use is declared, and pull-out force on brass inserts inserted by thermal or ultrasonic methods.

Washing machine control-panel bezels, detergent drawer fronts, and coffee-machine frame inserts are filled more easily with SL2000 but have the tightest aesthetic rejection limits in the downstream list. IEC 60335-1:2020 Clause 30.2.3 triggers glow-wire testing at 750 °C for non-metallic parts supporting live connections carrying more than 0.5 A; many appliance OEMs nevertheless specify 850 °C for external surfaces because of unattended-use risk. Melt temperature is held at 250 °C to 265 °C, mould temperature at 70 °C to 80 °C for standard high-gloss panels. If in-mould labelling is used, the label-side mould surface is raised toward 80 °C to 95 °C to achieve film adhesion without edge lift after dishwasher testing.

Hydrolysis resistance is the key limitation in appliance wet zones. PC/ABS parts exposed to steam, condensation, or repeated wash cycles should be validated after damp-heat conditioning under IEC 60068-2-78 at 85 °C and 85 % RH for 1,000 h, followed by tensile-impact retention or screw-boss pull-out, because surface gloss retention alone does not capture molecular-weight loss in the PC phase. White masterbatch or titanium dioxide concentrate is limited to 3 wt %; higher loadings reduce flow length by 5 % to 10 % in thin rib sections and require fill-speed adjustment to avoid hesitation marks. Terminal components include control-panel frames, detergent drawer fronts, coffee-machine side panels, and internal display brackets. Aggressive alkaline detergents and ketone-based cleaners should be kept out of compatibility testing because they attack the PC phase and accelerate environmental stress cracking around moulded-in bosses.

When Comparative Tracking Index and Creepage Distances Dictate Flash-Free Mould Settings

Consumer unit covers, terminal block carriers, power distribution strip housings, and low-voltage apparatus enclosures impose a different demand profile: the material must survive glow-wire exposure, sustain a stable comparative tracking index, and maintain creepage distances after moulding. If the SL2000 certificate reports a CTI in the 250 V to 400 V range under IEC 60112, the insulation coordination design under IEC 60664-1 must treat the material as Material Group II or IIIa. That choice changes creepage distances for reinforced insulation at 250 V working voltage and cannot be overridden by the moulder. Glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 is usually performed at 850 °C or 960 °C depending on the product standard and whether the part is in unattended use with continuous current above 0.2 A.

Processing is directed at minimizing mould flash, internal stress, and overpacking near contacts because flash at the parting line directly reduces the effective creepage path. Thick sections of 2.0 mm to 3.2 mm are moulded with melt temperature 245 °C to 260 °C, mould temperature 70 °C to 80 °C, and pack pressure 70 MPa to 90 MPa. Screw speed is held at 40 rpm to 70 rpm with a compression ratio of 2.2:1 to 2.5:1 and L/D of 20:1 on hydraulic or toggle machines in the 1,000 kN to 2,500 kN clamp class. Regrind is capped at 10 wt % because tracking-index and flame-retardant certification are both sensitive to thermal history and contamination from brass swarf or release agents.

The terminal-product audit includes flash measurement at the parting line, with rejection above 0.1 mm in any zone that lies between live contacts and an accessible surface. Insert-moulded brass terminal carriers must be checked for pull-out and for microcracks radiating from insert edges after thermal cycling from -25 °C to 70 °C. If the part is assembled with screw bosses, the boss outer diameter should be at least 2.0× the screw nominal diameter and the hole depth at least 2.5× the screw diameter to keep hoop stress below the threshold where post-mould cracking appears after glow-wire conditioning.

Diagnostic Housings That Never Touch the Patient Still Carry Disinfectant Stress-Cracking Risk

IVD analyzer front bezels, bench-top laboratory equipment covers, and handheld diagnostic enclosures use SL2000 for non-patient-contact surfaces where dimensional stability, flame retardance, and solvent resistance after cleaning are the primary concerns. IEC 61010-1:2010 governs laboratory equipment; if the device is integrated into a medical electrical system, IEC 60601-1:2005+A1:2012 applies to the system level. The housing itself is outside ISO 10993-1:2018 biological evaluation unless the risk file identifies transfer of residues to patient-contact surfaces. In many diagnostic tooling plants, regrind is prohibited by the OEM quality plan; where permitted, 5 wt % is the maximum with full re-validation of dimensional stability and flame rating.

Moulding is performed with melt temperature 245 °C to 260 °C, mould temperature 70 °C to 85 °C, and drying at 80 °C for 4 h to 0.02 wt % moisture. Disinfectant compatibility is the dominant chemical risk. Quaternary ammonium formulations, buffered hydrogen peroxide solutions, and isopropanol-based wipes should be screened under ASTM D543-21 using constant-strain fixtures at 0.5 % to 1.0 % outer-fibre strain and repeated wipe cycles. Ketone-based cleaners and aromatic hydrocarbons are excluded from the screening set because they swell the PC phase and accelerate stress crazing at snap-fit undercuts and heat-stake locations. Published disinfectant-compatibility data for this specific SL2000 configuration is limited, so a screening trial on moulded strips cut from the actual part is required before first clinical-site placement.

Where secondary operations include ultrasonic welding, vibration welding, or adhesive bonding, residual moulded-in stress should be reduced by annealing at 70 °C for 2 h for parts above 2.0 mm wall, with thin-wall sections checked for distortion after annealing. Insertion of threaded brass inserts by thermal or ultrasonic methods must be followed by pull-out testing and crack inspection under 20× magnification after a 24 h disinfectant soak. The terminal products are diagnostic analyzer front covers, bench-top instrument side panels, and hand-held reader enclosures. Dimensional acceptance includes fixture check after 72 h at 50 °C and 90 % RH, because post-mould moisture uptake in PC/ABS shifts tight snap-fit features by roughly the part’s hygroscopic expansion allowance, which must be established per tool rather than assumed from unfilled PC data.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Identification of Dongguan Fenglong PC/ABS SL2000 begins with the polymer architecture rather than the commercial grade label. The material belongs to the flame-retardant PC/ABS alloy class produced by melt blending a high-viscosity bisphenol-A polycarbonate phase with an ABS impact modifier and a phosphorus-based flame-retardant package. The flame-retardant species in this subcategory is commonly based on a phosphate ester such as resorcinol bis(diphenyl phosphate) or bisphenol-A bis(diphenyl phosphate), although the supplier formulation is not disclosed. In thin-wall injection molding supply chains, the grade is specified for electrical enclosures, power adapter housings, and automotive interior brackets where nominal wall thickness is between 1.5 mm and 2.5 mm and a UL 94 V-0 rating at 1.5 mm is required. Published numerical values for this exact configuration are limited; lot-specific data from the manufacturer’s certificate of analysis must therefore be treated as the controlling specification for any production release.

    Thermal and Rheological Processing Envelope

Drying is mandatory for PC/ABS SL2000 before injection molding, even when the as-received moisture content appears low. A desiccant dryer with a dew point no higher than -30 °C should be operated at 80–100 °C for 3–4 h; if ambient relative humidity exceeds 60% RH, drying time should be extended to 6 h. Target residual moisture is below 0.02 wt%. Failure to achieve this threshold can cause hydrolysis of the polycarbonate phase, resulting in gate splay, a 15–20% loss in notched Charpy impact, and audible outgassing at the nozzle on a production-scale reciprocating screw machine.

Melt temperature should be maintained at 245–270 °C, measured at the nozzle with an immersion thermocouple. Typical barrel zone settings are 230–250 °C in the rear zone, 240–260 °C in the middle zone, 245–270 °C in the front zone, and 250–265 °C at the nozzle. Mold temperature should be held at 60–90 °C; for components with wall thickness below 1.8 mm, the upper end of that range improves flow length and reduces molded-in stress. Injection velocity should be set to fill 90–95% of cavity volume in 0.5–1.5 s, with hold pressure transferred at a screw position 3–5 mm before the zero cushion. Hydraulic hold pressure is typically 60–80 MPa on a direct-clamp injection molding machine with a general-purpose screw of 18:1–22:1 L/D and compression ratio 2.0–2.5.

Barrel residence time must not exceed 8 min at 270 °C. Longer residence, particularly in hot-runner systems without balanced thermal control, can generate acidic degradation species from the flame-retardant package and cause polycarbonate molecular weight loss. Purging should be performed with a non-abrasive polyolefin or natural PC/ABS carrier; amine-based purging compounds and sodium hydroxide-containing detergents are incompatible. Regrind addition is limited to 20 wt% of identical production scrap ground with a low-shear granulator. For components requiring UL 94 V-0 certification, regrind use above 10 wt% requires revalidation through vertical burn testing on the actual molded thickness and color.

Mechanical response of PC/ABS SL2000 class materials is evaluated on injection-molded ISO 527-2:2012 Type 1A specimens after 48 h conditioning at 23 °C and 50% RH. Tensile yield stress typically falls between 50 MPa and 60 MPa, with tensile elongation at break between 30% and 70% depending on ABS rubber particle size and polycarbonate molecular weight. Flexural modulus per ISO 178:2019 is generally 2200–2600 MPa, while notched Charpy impact per ISO 179-1:2010 at 23 °C is 35–55 kJ/m². At -30 °C, notched Charpy impact may fall to 10–20 kJ/m², indicating the ductile-to-brittle transition that must be considered for outdoor enclosures or interior parts exposed to subzero transport conditions. Heat deflection temperature per ISO 75-2:2013 method A at 1.80 MPa is expected in the 90–105 °C range. Linear mold shrinkage per ISO 294-4 is typically 0.4–0.7% in the flow direction and 0.5–0.8% transverse to flow. Where North American customers require ASTM-based data, ASTM D638-14 Type I specimens may be used, but conversion from ISO data is not direct.

The tabulated values are characteristic of the flame-retardant PC/ABS subcategory and are not producer-certified values for every lot of Dongguan Fenglong PC/ABS SL2000. The producer’s shipment-specific certificate of analysis should replace these ranges for tooling calculations, capability studies, and regulatory submissions.

Does SL2000 Maintain Its Flame-Retardant Classification After Thin-Wall Molding and Thermal Aging?

The UL 94 vertical burn test uses specimens 125 mm × 13 mm × 1.5 mm conditioned at 23 °C/50% RH for 48 h and then at 70 °C for 168 h. For a class-typical flame-retardant PC/ABS, V-0 at 1.5 mm means total afterflame time after two 10 s flame applications on five specimens does not exceed 50 s, with no individual afterflame time greater than 10 s and no cotton ignition. At 1.2 mm, the classification may shift to V-1, particularly in light colors or when regrind exceeds 10 wt%. Glow-wire flammability per IEC 60695-2-12 is often reported at 850 °C or 960 °C for 1.5 mm plaques, but this depends on the specific flame-retardant package and must be verified for SL2000.

Thermal aging at 85 °C and 85% RH for 1000 h can reduce notched Charpy impact by 10–20% through polycarbonate hydrolysis. Components used in high-humidity electrical enclosures should therefore be re-tested for UL 94 classification after damp-heat exposure if the end-use specification requires sustained flame retardancy. Volume resistivity is expected above 1 × 1014 Ω·cm per IEC 62631-3-1, surface resistivity above 1 × 1015 Ω per IEC 62631-3-2, and comparative tracking index between 250 V and 300 V per IEC 60112. These values are not substitutes for part-specific electrical testing because molded-in stress, contamination, and moisture can depress tracking resistance in service.

Performance Boundaries Where SL2000 Diverges from Unfilled Flame-Retardant Polycarbonate and Standard PC/ABS

The distinguishing feature of Dongguan Fenglong PC/ABS SL2000 relative to general-purpose PC/ABS is the integration of a flame-retardant package that reduces afterflame time without requiring a separate halogenated masterbatch at the press. The trade-off appears in melt stability and ultraviolet color retention. Standard non-flame-retardant PC/ABS can often tolerate brief melt residence above 270 °C, but the SL2000 class should remain at or below 270 °C to avoid degradation of the phosphate-ester package and subsequent polycarbonate hydrolysis. The material also requires stricter drying control than many unfilled ABS grades because the polycarbonate phase is hygroscopic and the flame-retardant package can release acidic species when wet.

Compared with flame-retardant polycarbonate homopolymer, SL2000 processes in a narrower and lower melt-temperature band of 245–270 °C, whereas flame-retardant polycarbonate typically requires 280–310 °C. The PC/ABS alloy consequently leaves a lower thermal load on hot-runner systems and permits molding on tools with oil-heated or water-heated manifolds. The trade-off is a lower heat deflection temperature: class-typical 90–105 °C for SL2000 compared with 125–135 °C for many flame-retardant polycarbonate grades. Chemical resistance is also lower than that of polycarbonate homopolymer in the presence of esters, ketones, and strong alkalis. Stress cracking can occur when the molded part is exposed to solvent vapors or aggressive cleaning agents under residual molded-in stress.

Compared with flame-retardant ABS, the PC/ABS alloy provides higher notched impact strength and higher heat deflection temperature, but it carries a higher density and greater sensitivity to drying and hydrolysis. The processing window is still wider than that of many high-flow flame-retardant ABS grades because PC/ABS tolerates a broader mold-temperature range without excessive sink or warpage in stringer-ribbed housings.

Compliance verification framework for Dongguan Fenglong PC/ABS SL2000

Flammability classification UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, revalidated per thickness, color, and regrind level
Plastics identification marking ISO 11469:2016 >PC+ABS-FR< with flame-retardant identifier per supplier recommendation

On a 120-ton hydraulic injection molding machine with a 20:1 L/D general-purpose screw and a shut-off nozzle, stable melt cushion is maintained at 250 °C melt temperature and 70 °C mold temperature when screw back pressure is set to 3–5 MPa and decompression is set to 3–5 mm. Processing failures observed when drying is skipped include gate splay, short shots in 1.2 mm ribs due to reduced flow-front temperature, and a 15–20% loss in notched Charpy impact. When barrel residence time exceeds 10 min at 270 °C, black specks and viscosity reduction indicate polycarbonate degradation. The grade should not be purged with amine-based compounds, and it should not be specified for continuous contact with strong alkalis, esters, or ketones. For outdoor electrical enclosures, UV-stabilized pigmented formulations require long-term weathering data according to ISO 4892-2 because unfilled flame-retardant PC/ABS can lose surface gloss and impact strength after 1000 h of accelerated weathering. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and end-use qualification must therefore include part-level testing under the intended electrical, thermal, and environmental load.
