Application of Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388

The processing conditions described below are industrial reference values for unfilled injection-moulding and extrusion-grade ABS. They must be verified against the certificate of analysis for the specific batch of Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 before production qualification.

Where visible Class A interior surfaces are required, Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is processed after desiccant drying to a residual moisture level below <0.05% as verified by ISO 15512 Method A. The dryer is operated at 80°C for 3 h to 4 h with a supply air dew point of -40°C or lower. Material hopper residence time is kept below 2 h when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60%. The melt is prepared in a single-screw injection unit with 22:1 L/D and a shut-off nozzle with a reverse taper of 1.5°. Barrel zones are profiled from 200°C at the feed throat to 235°C at the nozzle. Melt temperature measured by an insertion probe is maintained between 235°C and 250°C. Mould temperature is held at 60°C to 80°C with turbulent water channels of 10 mm diameter. Hold pressure is set at 60% to 70% of the peak injection pressure. Back pressure is limited to 0.5 MPa to 1.0 MPa. Screw rotation speed is 40 rpm to 80 rpm. This avoids excessive shear heating and reduces surface streaking. Regrind of Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is limited to 15 wt% for visible Class A surfaces; core-layer regrind can be raised to 25 wt% only when the melt volume-flow rate shift measured per ISO 1133-1:2022 at 220°C and 10 kg is below 8%. Batch-to-batch variation in injection pressure is recorded on hydraulic machines with clamp force between 1,200 kN and 3,500 kN. Process control includes screw cushion monitoring between 2 mm and 4 mm. Deviations above 5 mm indicate check-ring wear and are a primary source of shot-weight drift on production lines. The clamp force is calculated from the projected area at 3.5 kN/cm² to 4.5 kN/cm². Cavity pressure sensors are installed in the last-fill zone; switchover from injection to holding is triggered at 90% to 95% cavity filling. This reduces over-packing at the gate and minimises residual stress. The terminal parts include B-pillar lower trim covers, door pocket bodies, and centre console side panels. Emission compliance for interior use is evaluated by VDA 278:2011 for volatile organic compounds and fogging, together with DIN 75201-B gravimetric fogging. Specific OEM interior limits apply; actual values must be confirmed on production-spec plaques conditioned for 24 h at 23°C and 50% RH per ISO 291. Unpainted Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is not used for upper instrument panel surfaces without UV stabiliser or coating because appearance retention under direct sunlight requires additional accelerated weathering per ISO 4892-2. Ethanol-containing cleaners and strong polar solvents must be avoided because environmental stress cracking can occur under mechanical strain; compatibility of cleaning agents and process oils is tested by ISO 22088-3 using bent-beam specimens at 0.5% external fibre strain.

What Limits Regrind Ratios in Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 for Electronic Enclosure Injection Moulding?

Electronic enclosure applications require dimensional stability, low moulded-in stress, and flammability classification under IEC 60695-11-10. Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is used for non-flame-rated housings where the end-use standard permits UL 94 HB at the minimum wall thickness of the moulded part. The regrind ratio is limited primarily by notched impact retention and colour drift. Production trials on enclosures with 2.0 mm nominal wall thickness show that cumulative regrind fractions above 20 wt% can cause measurable loss in Charpy notched impact strength tested per ISO 179-1/1eA. The exact loss depends on the number of heat histories and the residence-time distribution in the screw. Therefore, the regrind fraction is not fixed solely by specification; it is established on first-article inspection after injection of test shots containing the intended regrind fraction. Moulded parts are produced at melt temperatures of 230°C to 250°C and tool temperatures of 50°C to 70°C. Gates are located away from thin-wall snap features to reduce jetting. Back pressure is set at 0.4 MPa to 0.8 MPa, and screw speed is 50 rpm to 90 rpm. Thin-wall sections below 1.2 mm require higher melt temperature and fast injection speed, but this increases burn marks at the end of fill if venting is inadequate. Vent grooves of 0.02 mm depth and 6 mm width are used on the parting line. The mould is protected from gas entrapment by vacuum channels connected to a -0.08 MPa pump. Dimensional checks after ejection include free-shrinkage measurement following ISO 294-4; shrinkage is recorded as 0.4% to 0.7% in the flow direction and 0.3% to 0.6% transverse, depending on wall thickness and tool temperature. These values are typical for unfilled injection-moulding ABS and must be refined from the production tool. The terminal parts include router lower shells, power adaptor housings, and terminal covers. RoHS recast 2011/65/EU and REACH EC 1907/2006 substance declarations are required for shipment.

In high-gloss vacuum cleaner housing production, weld-line strength is controlled more by mould temperature and gate sequencing than by melt temperature alone. Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is injected into a mould with cavity inserts polished to SPI A-2 finish or better. The tool is heated to 70°C to 85°C using pressurised water units operating at 70°C to 90°C. Melt temperature is set between 240°C and 255°C. Sequential valve gates are timed to move weld lines away from the highly loaded latch bosses and hose connection points. Weld-line strength is checked using ISO 527-2 tensile specimens cut across the weld line; the acceptance criterion is that weld-line strength retention is above 80% of the unwelded value. Black covers are pigmented with a carbon black masterbatch at 0.8 wt% to 1.2 wt%; the carrier resin is ABS-based to prevent delamination. White shades require titanium dioxide masterbatch at 2.0 wt% to 3.0 wt%. Gloss is measured at 60° using ISO 2813. Differential cooling is applied through independently controlled water circuits. Warpage is measured on a granite surface plate with electronic indicators; the flatness specification is 0.3 mm per 100 mm for sealing faces. Ultrasonic welding of the two halves requires an energy director design with 0.2 mm to 0.4 mm height. Weld strength is tested by burst-pressure cycling per IEC 60312 for vacuum cleaner dust containment. The terminal products are vacuum cleaner dust cup housings, handheld cleaner bodies, and floor nozzle covers. Cleaning-agent resistance is validated by ISO 2812-1 exposure to diluted alkaline and non-ionic surfactant solutions. Silicone-based mould release agents are not recommended because they can interfere with painting or laser marking.

When Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 Replaces Modified PPO in Appliance Control Panels

Replacement of modified PPO is evaluated only when the continuous service temperature of the control panel does not exceed the material’s Vicat softening temperature under load. The Vicat temperature is confirmed by ISO 306/B50 using 50°C/h heating rate and 50 N load. If the surrounding appliance heat source keeps the panel below the certified Vicat value minus 15°C, the substitution is considered. Surface preparation before coating uses corona or atmospheric plasma to achieve a minimum surface energy of 38 mN/m as measured by ISO 8296 test inks. A UV-curable polyurethane topcoat is applied at 15 μm to 25 μm dry film thickness. Adhesion is tested by cross-cut per ISO 2409; the required classification is 0 or 1 on the six-point scale. The injection process uses melt temperatures of 240°C to 260°C, mould temperature 60°C to 80°C, and a hold pressure profile with three steps to minimise sink marks over stiffening ribs. Rib-to-wall ratio is kept at 0.6:1.0 or lower. Flow simulation software is used to predict sink marks; mesh size in rib intersection areas is kept below 0.5 mm. The simulation data is validated against short shots on the production tool. Switchover position is adjusted after the first five short shots. Gate freeze time is determined by cavity pressure decay; holding time is set 0.5 s longer than gate freeze time. The appliance panel is subjected to 1.5 J impact at the corner bosses per IEC 60068-2-75 spring hammer. No cracking of the boss is allowed. Terminal products include washing machine control panel frames, dishwasher facia trim, and compact appliance button surrounds. Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is not specified for oven door trim or parts exposed to 70°C continuous load because creep resistance under load is insufficient for those service conditions.

Extrusion-Grade Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 in Sheet and Luggage Shell Thermoforming

Sheet extrusion is performed on a single-screw extruder with 30:1 to 40:1 L/D, vacuum venting, and a melt gear pump to damp pressure oscillations. The melt temperature at the die is maintained between 200°C and 220°C. The die gap is set 0.5 mm to 1.5 mm wider than the target sheet gauge to compensate for draw-down. Polishing roll stack temperatures are set at 80°C to 110°C, with the middle roll slightly hotter to control surface replication. Thermoforming preheat is carried out with twin-side quartz heaters at 160°C to 180°C sheet surface temperature. Plug assist material is high-density polyethylene or syntactic foam to reduce pre-stretch chill marks. Deep-draw ratio is limited to 1.0:1.5 width-to-depth for female forming; higher draw ratios require multi-stage plugging. Moisture-related defects such as splay and bubbles in extruded sheet are eliminated by drying at 90°C for 3 h if the resin has been stored outside a sealed silo. The sheet surface is protected with polyethylene masking film before thermoforming to prevent dust pinholes. Scrap generated in trimming is recycled back into the sheet line at up to 15 wt% without significant shift in tensile properties, but edge trim with high orientation is excluded from the recycle stream. Terminal products include luggage shell halves, equipment case bodies, and recreational vehicle interior side panels. Mechanical acceptance is based on tensile yield stress per ISO 527-2 and notched Charpy impact per ISO 179-1/1eA. Published data for this specific configuration is limited; first-article thermoforming trials must be conducted with production sheet to determine local wall-thickness distribution by ultrasonic thickness gauge.

Thermal Ageing Resistance Boundaries in Engine-Bay Adjacent Trim

Under-hood adjacent trim components made from Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 are restricted to locations below the fender-to-cowl sealing line, away from direct contact with the engine block, turbocharger, and exhaust manifold. Accelerated thermal ageing is conducted per ISO 188 at 100°C for 168 h on specimens cut from moulded parts. The comparative retention of notched Charpy impact strength is measured per ISO 179-1/1eA. A retention of at least 70% of the original unaged value is used as an internal gate, but end-use validation at the actual air temperature and airflow rate is required because ageing under forced convection is more severe than static oven ageing. The material is not specified for continuous service above 85°C under mechanical load due to creep and surface oxidation. If a higher heat-load location is considered, a heat stabiliser masterbatch at 0.5 wt% to 1.0 wt% may be evaluated, but its effect on colour and melt flow must be rechecked by ISO 1133-1:2022. Moulding is performed with melt temperature 235°C to 250°C, tool temperature 60°C to 80°C, and a short hold time to reduce residual stress. Accelerated ageing under ISO 188 at 100°C for 168 h is a screening test only; long-term heat resistance must be validated by component-level heat-soak tests in a forced-air chamber. The surface is inspected for chalking, gloss loss, and microcracking after ageing. Gloss loss measured per ISO 2813 should not exceed 20% of the original 60° gloss for visible engine-bay trim. Terminal products include air duct covers, cowl side trim, fuse box covers, and wiring harness brackets. The material shall not be used for rocker covers, intake manifolds, or coolant expansion tanks. Any contact with engine oil and brake fluid requires compatibility testing per ISO 175 for 7 days at the maximum service temperature. Contact with chlorinated solvents or strong ketones must be avoided because environmental stress cracking can occur under mechanical strain.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is an acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied in pellet form. The grade designation identifies a controlled-rheology injection-moulding variant within the Dahe ABS portfolio; it is not a standalone specification because lot-specific melt flow, impact, colour, and additive data are defined by the producer’s certificate of analysis. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, so the numerical ranges in this document are compiled from the general ABS injection-moulding class and from downstream moulding reports. They should be treated as a processing orientation rather than a contractual property guarantee. Typical industrial use includes electroplated components, painted interior trim, and non-flame-retardant appliance housings. The following sections are intended for process engineers, tooling engineers, and materials-quality personnel.

What Pre-Drying and Melt-Temperature Limits Apply to 98388 Injection Moulding?

Pre-drying is required when the resin has been exposed to ambient air for more than 8 h or when the packaging is damaged. A desiccant dryer with a dew point not higher than -20 °C should be set at 80 °C for 4 h or 90 °C for 2 h. Measured pellet moisture should be below 0.05 % by Karl Fischer titration before the hopper is closed. Production-scale observations on a 1200 kN reciprocating-screw machine with a 24:1 L/D screw indicate that moisture levels above 0.08 % produce silver streaks in 2.0 mm plaque tools and reduce surface gloss on polished cavities. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, open-container transfer should be limited to 15 min; otherwise a second drying cycle at 80 °C for 2 h is recommended.

Melt temperature should be controlled between 220 °C and 240 °C for general injection moulding. Feed-throat zones should remain below 40 °C to avoid premature bridging. At the nozzle, a melt probe reading above 250 °C should trigger an alarm because the butadiene phase can begin to degrade exothermically. Barrel residence time above 240 °C should not exceed 5 min; in hot-runner systems with four-cavity tools, the residence time per shot should be kept below 3 min to limit yellowing and surface pitting. Back pressure should be maintained at 0.5 MPa to 1.5 MPa, and screw peripheral speed should not exceed 1.5 m/s on a 35 mm general-purpose screw.

For wall sections from 1.5 mm to 2.5 mm, peak injection pressure can reach 100 MPa to 140 MPa, with flow-front velocity from 120 mm/s to 200 mm/s. Hold pressure should start at 50 % to 70 % of the peak injection pressure and should be transferred by screw position rather than timer to reduce warpage. Mold temperature should be kept at 40 °C to 80 °C using a pressurised water or oil unit. Cavity-to-cavity variation should remain below ±2 °C for electroplating-grade surfaces because uneven mould surface temperature changes local shrinkage and can produce visible flow marks after chrome deposition.

Tensile, Flexural, and Impact Property Envelope Across ISO Specimen Geometries

The following reference envelope represents typical lot data for ABS injection-moulding grades classified under ISO 2580-2. Test specimens are prepared by injection moulding in a two-plate tool according to ISO 294-1, conditioned at 23 °C ± 2 °C and 50 % ± 10 % relative humidity for 88 h per ISO 291, and drawn according to ISO 527-2:2012. Lot-specific values should be read from the supplier certificate rather than from this generalised table.

Property Test method Reference lot envelope
    Density ISO 1183-1 1.04–1.06 g/cm³
    Melt mass-flow rate ISO 1133-1, 220 °C/10 kg 18–24 g/10 min
    Tensile yield stress ISO 527-2, 50 mm/min 40–45 MPa
    Tensile elongation at yield ISO 527-2, 50 mm/min 2.0–2.5 %
    Nominal strain at break ISO 527-2, 50 mm/min 12–25 %
    Flexural modulus ISO 178, 2 mm/min 2000–2300 MPa
    Flexural strength ISO 178, 2 mm/min 58–65 MPa
    Notched Izod impact at 23 °C ISO 180/1A 18–25 kJ/m²
    Notched Izod impact at -30 °C ISO 180/1A 8–12 kJ/m²
Heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa ISO 75-2/A 80–86 °C
    Vicat softening temperature ISO 306/B50 94–98 °C
Flammability at 1.5 mm UL 94 HB

The property envelope is asymmetric in cold impact: the notched Izod value at -30 °C falls to 35 % to 50 % of the 23 °C value. This limits outdoor cold-impact use unless impact modification is externally added. Published data for this specific configuration is limited for dynamic mechanical behaviour below -40 °C; a DMA scan is recommended if the part is to be used in freezer liners or cold-chain housings.

When the application requires a bright chrome or satin nickel electroplated finish on three-dimensional substrates, Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is often evaluated on the basis of butadiene particle size distribution, melt-flow directionality, and lamination performance after etch. Electroplating adhesion is not solely a function of the ABS grade; it depends on chromic-sulfuric acid etch temperature, usually 60 °C to 70 °C for 5 min to 10 min, followed by neutralisation and palladium-tin activation. The etch selectively oxidises butadiene rubber domains, leaving mechanical interlock sites for the electroless nickel layer. A peel adhesion test according to ASTM B533 should be used to determine adhesion. Production-scale platers typically require a minimum peel strength of 0.8 N/mm for decorative interior parts and 1.2 N/mm for exterior chrome trim. If the lot-to-lot butadiene domain size varies by more than 0.15 μm, identical etch baths can produce dull patches or adhesive-failed areas even on identical moulding tools.

Processors should not assume that a general-purpose ABS grade can be substituted into the same etch bath without adhesion loss. Dongguan Dahe ABS 98388 is positioned as a controlled-rubber plating grade, but published data for this specific configuration is limited; each incoming lot should be checked with a solvent-stress-crack test and a small-scale plating coupon before full production. Mould release agents based on amine chemistry or silicone oil should be avoided because residual surface films can inhibit etch uniformity. Electroplated layer thickness should be controlled at 15–25 μm for decorative interiors and 25–40 μm for exterior weatherable parts.

When Fire-Retardant V-0 Is Not Required in Appliance Housings

When the final product is not required to meet UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm, ABS 98388 can be considered for internal structural brackets, rear covers, and control panels. The ignition resistance remains limited to UL 94 HB; exposure to hot-wire ignition according to IEC 60695-2-10 requires lot-specific testing on the finished part. Brominated flame-retardant masterbatches should not be added without assessing notched Izod and melt-viscosity shifts. An addition of approximately 15 wt% brominated flame-retardant masterbatch can lower notched Izod by 20 % to 40 % and may require melt-temperature reduction to 210 °C to 220 °C to avoid acid-catalysed degradation of the butadiene phase. For moulded parts that must pass glow-wire end-product testing at 650 °C or 750 °C, a higher-heat ABS or a PC/ABS blend should be used instead of 98388 unless the supplier provides a certified glow-wire grade.

Clean regrind from sprues and runners may be blended at up to 20 wt% when the regrind is dried to less than 0.05 % moisture and segregated from dust and oil.

In thin-wall appliance fascia panels with nominal wall thickness at 1.8 mm and flow length reaching 180 mm, ABS 98388 is normally run with a melt temperature of 230 °C and a mould temperature of 50 °C to fill without diesel-effect gloss loss. Flow-front velocity should be maintained above 150 mm/s to prevent premature freeze-off at the end of fill. On a 1000 kN machine with a 32 mm screw, the transfer position is usually set at 6.0 mm before cushion, and a cushion of 3.0 mm to 4.0 mm is required to maintain pack pressure. If the cushion decreases below 2.0 mm, short shots and burn marks appear at the last-filled ribs. Mould venting depth should not exceed 0.02 mm for ABS to avoid flash while allowing gas escape. A cavity-pressure sensor embedded near the gate typically shows a peak of 45 MPa to 60 MPa; end-of-cavity pressure below 25 MPa is associated with sink marks opposite ribs and bosses.

    Difference Between 98388, General-Purpose ABS 757, and High-Heat ABS 777D

Compared with general-purpose ABS 757, the 98388 designation is intended to provide a narrower melt-flow band and more consistent mould shrinkage for automated downstream assembly. General-purpose ABS 757 often accepts a melt temperature up to 250 °C and is available with a broader colour palette; 98388 is mainly specified in neutral or dark colours for mechanical parts and electroplating. Compared with high-heat ABS 777D, 98388 has a lower heat deflection temperature: its 1.8 MPa HDT is typically 80 °C to 86 °C, whereas high-heat ABS grades are commonly in the 95 °C to 100 °C range. This restricts 98388 in painted parts exposed to 85 °C continuous service, because the lacquer curing cycle can push the substrate above its heat deflection threshold. For interior parts in direct sunlight behind glazing, cabin temperatures can exceed 100 °C; in that case PC/ABS or high-heat ABS is preferred.

Mould shrinkage for 98388 should be expected in the range of 0.4 % to 0.7 % parallel to flow and 0.5 % to 0.7 % perpendicular to flow, depending on gate location, wall thickness, and pack pressure. This is slightly higher than high-heat ABS grades and lower than some glass-filled ABS compounds. Dimensional stability is process-dependent; capability studies on the production tool are required because published data for this specific configuration is limited.

Compliance Status Against Global Electrical and Plastics Regulations

Regulation or standard Clause or method Assessment for 98388
EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU Annex II restricted substances Pass at raw-pellet level only when supplier declaration is available; verify lot-specific lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBB, and PBDE below maximum concentration values
REACH SVHC Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 Supplier declaration required; no generic exemption applies
UL 94 Small-scale flame test HB at minimum thickness; not V-0 unless certified
IEC 60695-2-12 Glow-wire end-product test Test on finished part; raw-pellet data are not transferable
ISO 2580-2 ABS designation system Classify with lot datasheet before procurement

Material compliance is supply-chain dependent. The resin can be evaluated against EU RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH SVHC obligations by requesting lot-specific test reports from the compounder; no blanket certification can be issued from a generic technical description. For food-contact or medical use, the grade has not been universally cleared. For electrical enclosures, glow-wire end-product testing according to IEC 60695-2-12 must be conducted on the moulded part because UL 94 HB covers a small open-flame test only. If the part is marketed in North America, a UL yellow card for natural or coloured grade should be requested from the supplier before listing the material. Lot-to-lot variance in residual styrene monomer should be monitored by gas chromatography headspace analysis; a threshold of 100 ppm is often used for odour-sensitive automotive interiors, though published data for this specific configuration is limited.
