Application of Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-Black

In sheet extrusion operations supplying thermoforming lines, pre-coloured ABS compounds under the 346A designation are processed on single-screw extruders configured with L/D ratios of 30:1 to 36:1. Barrier screw geometries are specified because carbon black masterbatch residues accelerate degradation when retained in the transition zone. Cylinder temperature profiling initiates at 180–200 °C in the feed throat and terminates at 210–230 °C at the die adapter. Die lip temperature uniformity is maintained within ±2 °C across the full transverse width. Sheet thickness variation exceeding 8 % is rejected by downstream vacuum forming stations when gauge-sensitive draw ratios exceed 0.8:1. Black pigmentation alters infrared absorption behaviour in both the roll stack cooling phase and the subsequent reheating cycle. Three-roll vertical calendars with chromium-plated surfaces are operated with a first nip gap set 15–20 % narrower than target sheet thickness to generate calendering pressure sufficient for surface replication on both faces. Moisture content of incoming granules must not exceed 0.05 % by weight; pre-drying at 80 °C for 3–4 hours in a desiccant dryer is required when ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Sheet surface temperatures measured with infrared pyrometers must fall between 142 °C and 168 °C before plug-assisted forming cycles begin. Lower-bound temperatures apply to deep-draw geometries exceeding a 1:1 draw ratio to prevent localised wall thinning below 0.35 mm. Published data for this specific black compound under industrial thermoforming conditions is limited; the processing window aligns with general-purpose extrusion-grade ABS characterised by Vicat softening temperatures of 96–102 °C under ISO 306 method B50. Heat deflection measurements under ASTM D648-18 at 1.82 MPa typically fall between 88 °C and 93 °C for products in this category. End products in this downstream segment include refrigerator door liners, washing machine top decks, HVAC condensate trays, and interior tub covers for domestic appliances. Dimensional control is verified against ISO 2818 specimen preparation protocols where regulatory documentation is requested by OEM purchasers.

Thermoformed components manufactured from extruded ABS sheet demand consistent melt extensional behaviour. A sheet blank heated to the forming window must exhibit uniform sag resistance; local temperature differentials greater than 5 °C across the blank produce variable wall thickness in the formed part. Plug-assisted positive moulding with aluminium tooling at 70–85 °C minimises chill marks on the visible surface. Vacuum hole patterns of 0.4–0.6 mm diameter are specified for grain-textured tool faces to prevent surface blemishes. Cycle time for a 2.0 mm gauge ABS sheet on a single-station thermoformer ranges from 45 to 70 seconds, depending on platen area and auxiliary cooling fans. Black compounds of this grade category tend to retain heat longer than natural or white-pigmented variants, necessitating extended cooling time of 10–15 % to achieve demoulding temperatures below 65 °C. This thermal retention behaviour is documented in equipment supplier technical bulletins and is not specific to any single compounder. For applications where dimensional consistency is critical—such as stacking refrigerator liners—the sheet extrusion line is synchronised with the forming station to avoid intermediate storage that introduces moisture reuptake. Edge trim regrind is recompounded at addition levels no higher than 15 wt% to prevent gloss reduction and impact degradation in sheet destined for visible surfaces.

Injection Moulding Parameter Ranges for Gloss-Critical Black Appliance Panels

Injection moulding of ABS 346A-Black into appliance fascias, control panels, and decorative front covers demands a defined processing window to prevent surface defects on dark-pigmented substrates. Pre-drying of granules at 80 °C for 2–4 hours in a desiccant dryer achieves residual moisture below 0.05 %, above which splay and silver streaking appear on moulded surfaces. Barrel temperature profiling is set at 200 °C in the feed zone, 215 °C in the compression zone, and 230 °C in the metering zone, with nozzle temperature held at 220–235 °C. Melt temperatures exceeding 250 °C initiate thermal degradation of the butadiene phase; the resultant free radicals accelerate chromophore formation that manifests as brown streaking on black surfaces. Screw rotation speeds of 60–100 rpm with back pressure of 0.5–0.8 MPa provide sufficient homogenisation without introducing shear heating beyond 5 °C adiabatic rise. Injection pressures between 80 MPa and 120 MPa are used for wall thicknesses from 2.0 mm to 3.5 mm, with holding pressures maintained at 50–70 % of peak injection pressure for 6–10 seconds. Mould temperature is controlled between 45 °C and 60 °C; lower mould temperatures reduce cycle time but compromise surface gloss on the visible face. Weld line coalescence in black ABS is measured by tensile testing at the knit line under ISO 527-2:2021; values between 70 % and 85 % of the un-welded specimen strength are accepted for non-structural decorative components.

Production-scale equipment behaviour has been documented on hydraulic injection moulding machines with clamping forces from 120 to 350 tonnes for appliance panels up to 0.4 m² in projected area. Cavity pressure sensors embedded in the moving platen generate real-time curves that terminate holding pressure when cavity pressure decays to 40 % of peak value—this practice reduces sink marks opposite thick sections and improves part-to-part weight consistency to within 0.3 %. Hot runner systems with externally heated manifolds are preferred over insulated runners for dark-pigmented ABS, because runner temperature variation of ±3 °C produces visible flow lines at the gate entry points on gloss finishes. Sequential valve gating is specified for panels requiring multiple injection points; gate sequencing software coordinates opening delays of 0.5–1.2 seconds between adjacent valves to minimise hesitation marks at knit boundaries. End products in this segment include washing machine control fascias, air conditioner front panels, refrigerator door handles, and vacuum cleaner housings. The processing parameters presented above are consistent with technical bulletins published by injection moulding machine manufacturers for ABS compounds of this melt flow category and are not presented as measured values from a specific production lot.

Automotive interior trim components fabricated from pre-coloured black ABS are subjected to chemical resistance tests against common cabin cleaning agents before production approval. Isopropanol wipes at 70 % concentration and household glass cleaners produce surface hazing on black substrates within 24 hours if the moulded surface lacks sufficient molecular orientation at the skin layer. Injection moulding parameters influence chemical resistance more strongly than compound formulation in unpainted applications. Faster fill speeds of 35–50 mm/s screw forward velocity generate higher shear at the melt front, aligning polymer chains at the frozen layer and reducing penetration of solvent molecules. Scratch resistance is evaluated under Volkswagen PV 3952 and General Motors GMW 14688 test protocols; cross-cut hardness testing with a 1 mm grid is recorded before and after abrasion with Erichsen 318 scratch testing apparatus. Black ABS without anti-scratch additives typically exhibits a Delta-L value between 0.8 and 1.2 under 10 N load, which is acceptable for low-touch zones but insufficient for centre console surfaces subject to fingernail contact. Fogging measurements under DIN 75201 method B require condensate mass below 2.0 mg at 100 °C after 16 hours; unpainted ABS compounds containing only carbon black as the pigment generally comply, provided no additional processing aids or lubricants exceeding 0.3 wt% total are incorporated.

Low-temperature impact performance is validated with notched Izod specimens tested under ISO 180/1A at −30 °C. Values between 6 kJ/m² and 10 kJ/m² are recorded for general-purpose grades in this category; values below 4 kJ/m² indicate insufficient butadiene content or excessive processing degradation. For pillar trim, door panel inserts, and map pocket assemblies, OEM specifications frequently define notched Izod at −30 °C as the acceptance criterion for cold-climate durability. Odour performance is tested under VDA 270 with allocation ratings of 3.0 or lower required for cabin-facing substrates. Outgassing of volatile organic compounds is measured under VOC test chamber method ISO 12219-2 where total VOC emissions are limited to 200 µg/m³ after 48 hours at 65 °C for unpainted ABS. These compliance boundaries apply to compounds of this general category and must be revalidated on production-intent tooling for any specific grade designation.

What Limits Sag Resistance in Dark-Pigmented ABS Pipe Extrusion?

Pipe extrusion of black ABS requires a vacuum calibrator configured to oppose melt sag in the free span between die face and calibration sleeve. For nominal outside diameters from 110 mm to 160 mm, the free span is maintained below 60 mm because carbon black absorption increases melt surface temperature by 3–5 °C compared to unpigmented resin at identical barrel settings. Spider-leg mandrel dies produce circumferential weld lines that reduce hydrostatic burst strength by 8–12 % under ISO 1167-1:2006 test conditions at 20 °C; spiral mandrel distribution is specified for pressure-rated pipe applications to eliminate spider lines. Vacuum calibration pressure is maintained at −0.04 to −0.07 MPa, with cooling water temperature held between 15 °C and 20 °C to freeze the surface layer before gravitational sag creates eccentric wall thickness. Wall thickness variation exceeding 0.3 mm on a 3 mm nominal wall is rejected for conformity with dimensional tolerance requirements under ISO 3127 for thermoplastic pipes. Throughput on a 65 mm single-screw extruder with barrel length 30D ranges from 120 to 180 kg/h for this product category.

Dimensional stability after extrusion is evaluated as longitudinal shrinkage. Specimens cut to 300 mm length are conditioned in air at 110 °C for 60 minutes under ISO 2505; shrinkage values greater than 3 % indicate insufficient orientation relaxation during the cooling sleeve residence time. Black pipe for drainage applications is typically classed as SN4 ring stiffness under ISO 9969, requiring a minimum ring stiffness of 4 kN/m² at a 3 % deflection. Published data for the specific 346A-Black designation under pressure-rating tests is limited; the processing window described aligns with extrusion-grade ABS compounds of comparable melt flow index and carbon black loading.

Electronic enclosure fabricators evaluating ABS 346A-Black for non-flame-retardant housings must establish flammability classification boundaries before tooling investment. Unmodified ABS compounds are rated HB under UL 94 at thicknesses of 1.5 mm and 3.0 mm; compliance is documented through UL 94 HB horizontal burn test procedures with burn rate limits of 40 mm/min for specimens between 3.0 mm and 13 mm thickness. Glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 at 550 °C is not applicable to products requiring V-0 or V-2 classification; halogen-free flame-retardant compounds are required for those applications. Surface resistivity of unpigmented ABS typically falls in the insulative range above 10¹² Ω/sq under IEC 62631-3-2; carbon black loading in black variants can reduce surface resistivity to the static-dissipative range of 10⁶–10⁹ Ω/sq depending on particle morphology and dispersion quality. This property shift must be verified on moulded plaques, not on granulate samples, because shear-induced dispersion during injection moulding substantially alters conductive network formation. ESD-sensitive applications require measurement under IEC 61340-2-3 on moulded enclosures after 48-hour conditioning at 23 °C and 12 % relative humidity. End products in this segment include router housings, power adapter shells, set-top box covers, and industrial sensor enclosures where UL 94 HB classification is acceptable.

Regulatory compliance for these applications requires documented conformity with RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU including amendment (EU) 2015/863, limiting lead, mercury, cadmium, hexavalent chromium, PBBs, and PBDEs to threshold concentrations as defined in Annex II. REACH obligations under EC 1907/2006 Article 33 require communication of substances of very high concern exceeding 0.1 wt% in articles; ABS compounds of this category typically contain no SVHCs above the communication threshold. Total bromine content is limited to 900 ppm under IEC 62321-6:2015 screening for RoHS conformity where end-product certification is requested. Electromagnetic compatibility testing of ABS enclosures is conducted under IEC 61000-4-2 for electrostatic discharge immunity; unpainted black ABS provides no inherent shielding effectiveness, with attenuation below 5 dB across the 30 MHz–1 GHz range. Shielding requirements exceeding 20 dB necessitate internal conductive coatings or metal foil inserts, which must be evaluated for adhesion compatibility with the moulded substrate surface energy, typically 38–42 mN/m for ABS as measured by contact angle test liquids per ISO 8296.

When Deep-Draw Thermoforming Replaces Injection Moulding for ABS Luggage Shells

Thermoformed ABS luggage shells require sheet gauge selection to be correlated with cavity depth before tooling is commissioned. For a draw ratio of 1.2:1 (part depth divided by largest opening dimension), sheet gauge of 2.0 mm results in corner wall thickness of approximately 0.55–0.65 mm after forming; for draw ratios of 1.8:1, a starting gauge of 3.0 mm is specified to maintain corner sections above 0.45 mm. Plug temperature is controlled at 90–110 °C using electrically heated aluminium plugs with ceramic surface coating to prevent material sticking during rapid penetration. Forming speed is limited to plug displacement rates below 250 mm/s; higher speeds generate localised strain rates that exceed the rupture threshold of oriented ABS at 140–150 °C. The advantage of thermoforming over injection moulding for this application lies in the elimination of knit lines at handle attachment points, which are a documented failure initiation site on injection-moulded luggage shells tested under cycling drop impact per IATA baggage handling simulation protocols. Published data for the specific 346A-Black designation in luggage shell forming is limited; process validation on production-intent sheet is required before tooling release.

Antistatic surface treatment is applied post-forming to reduce dust adhesion on black surfaces displayed in retail environments. Aqueous antistatic coating formulations are spray-applied at 2–4 g/m² dry film weight, achieving surface resistivity of 10⁸–10¹⁰ Ω/sq as measured under IEC 62631-3-2 within 48 hours of application. The coating must not interfere with subsequent polyurethane foam bonding on the interior surface, where peel adhesion strengths above 10 N/25 mm under ISO 11339 are specified by luggage assemblers. Shell assembly utilising hot-melt adhesive at application temperatures of 160–180 °C requires the thermoformed substrate to withstand localised surface temperature of 140 °C for 3–5 seconds without distortion—this boundary coincides with the measured Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306 method B50 for general-purpose ABS categories. Quality assurance at final inspection includes visual assessment under D65 illuminant for colour consistency across the shell surface; Delta-E values exceeding 1.5 under CIELAB coordinates are rejected for visible panels. This application segment represents a legitimate downstream market for extrusion-grade black ABS, distinct from injection-moulded luggage where clamp force requirements for full-size shell cavities exceed 1800 tonnes, making thermoforming the economically viable conversion route for small-to-medium production volumes.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

The designation Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-Black identifies a pre-compounded, black-pigmented acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene injection-molding resin. The grade is intended for rigid opaque components in which a uniform black surface, moderate ambient-temperature impact resistance, and dimensional stability under intermittent heat exposure are required without post-mold painting or coating. The supplier’s current technical datasheet, certificate of analysis, and processing guide are the normative sources for lot-specific melt flow rate, tensile properties, impact resistance, Vicat softening temperature, ash content, and pigment loading. Product-specific numerical values are not assigned by the commercial designation alone. Where this document cites numeric ranges for ABS, the values are representative of general-purpose injection-molding ABS resin class data reported in connection with ISO 2580-1, ISO 2580-2, ISO 1133-1, ISO 527-2, ISO 179-1, and related standards. Published data for the exact 346A-Black formulation is limited; final mold design and part qualification must not proceed from class data alone.

Can 346A-Black Be Substituted for High-Flow, High-Heat, or Flame-Retardant ABS Without Formulation-Specific Data?

Substitution is not permitted without formulation-specific data. The 346A portion of the designation is an internal manufacturer grade number and does not map to a standardized class in ISO 2580-1 or ISO 1043-1. The Black suffix refers to a pre-compounded black color package, typically carbon black, rather than a natural resin that is colored at the press. Differences from other ABS products derive from the base molecular weight distribution, acrylonitrile content, polybutadiene phase morphology, pigment loading, and the addition of process stabilizers or mold-release agents. A high-flow ABS is characterized by a higher melt volume-flow rate under ISO 1133-1 and is preferred for thin-wall parts, but it often sacrifices notched impact strength relative to a medium-flow general-purpose grade. A high-heat ABS may incorporate alpha-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomer, raising Vicat softening temperature under ISO 306/B50 beyond 110°C, but it requires higher melt temperature and can exhibit reduced flow. A flame-retardant ABS is typically modified with brominated additives and antimony synergists; its density is often above 1.1 g/cm³ and its weld-line strength may be lower than unfilled ABS. Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-Black should be treated as a separate formulation rather than a drop-in for any of those classes unless the supplier’s datasheet demonstrates equivalent melt-flow, thermal, mechanical, and flammability values.

Because the resin is hygroscopic, a closed-loop desiccant dryer with a dew point of −30°C or lower is specified for pre-drying. The resin bed should be held at 80°C to 90°C for 2 to 4 hours before molding, and residual moisture should be verified at or below 0.05 wt% to 0.10 wt%. At higher moisture content, injection-molded parts commonly exhibit splay, silver streaking, surface voids, and reduced tensile stress at yield under ISO 527-2. The melt-temperature interval for general-purpose ABS is normally 230°C to 260°C; mold temperature is normally 40°C to 80°C. When melt temperature exceeds 270°C, residence time should be limited to 5 to 10 minutes because thermal exposure accelerates polybutadiene-phase crosslinking and acrylonitrile-styrene matrix degradation. Black pigmentation can hide early yellowing, but degradation remains measurable as a decline in Charpy notched impact strength under ISO 179-1/1eA and an increase in injection peak pressure. Injection-molding machines with screw L/D ratios of 20:1 to 25:1 and compression ratios of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 are conventional for ABS; high-compression screws can increase shear heating and should be adjusted to the manufacturer’s processing sheet for 346A-Black. Dryer sizing should provide 0.5 to 1.0 m³/h of dry-air flow per kg/h of resin throughput. When ambient relative humidity is above 60% RH, open-air transfer after drying should be minimized to less than 30 minutes because regrowth of surface moisture can occur. The processing window for black ABS can narrow when surface gloss and flow-mark visibility must be controlled; mold-surface temperature variation should be held within ±5°C using oil-circulating temperature controllers and conformal cooling channels.

Mechanical-Property and Thermal-Property Benchmarks Used During Incoming-Material Inspection

Representative ranges for commercial general-purpose ABS injection-molding grades are shown for preliminary comparison. The table does not replace a certificate of analysis for Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-Black.

FlammabilityUL 94HB typical for non-FR ABSV-0 requires separate flame-retardant formulation

Opaque black ABS grades are used for appliance control-panel frames, consumer-electronics housing components, power-tool enclosures, and automotive interior trim substrates where the design load is low to moderate. The black pigment package provides consistent opacity and reduces the visibility of light internal staining, but it does not improve the base resin’s weathering classification. For direct outdoor exposure, photo-oxidative degradation remains a risk; accelerated weathering evaluation under ISO 4892-2 or ASTM D4329 is required. For ignition-resistance requirements, only a supplier-recognized UL Yellow Card or independent test report establishes the classification. Non-flame-retardant ABS is commonly classified HB under UL 94; V-0 behavior requires a flame-retardant modification that can alter density, tensile modulus, and weld-line strength. Electrical insulation requirements should not be inferred from the base resin. Comparative tracking index is evaluated under IEC 60112, dielectric strength under IEC 60243-1, and surface resistivity under IEC 62631-3-2; carbon-black pigmentation can reduce surface resistivity relative to natural ABS, and lot-specific values must be obtained for insulated live-part separation. RoHS Directive 2011/65/EU and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 compliance are not intrinsic to the base polymer; they depend on the color concentrate, heat stabilizer, mold-release agent, and any residual monomer or processing aids. The supplier’s declaration must be reviewed per lot or per formulation revision.

If Surface Gloss Stability and Weld-Line Appearance Drive Part Acceptance

In black-pigmented ABS, weld-line visibility and gloss variation are sensitive to mold temperature, injection speed, and carbon-black dispersion. Compounding on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder at L/D 32:1 to 44:1 is used to disperse carbon black; poor dispersion produces agglomerates that appear as surface pits and can reduce notched impact energy. Incoming resin evaluation should include microtomed plaque inspection at 50× to 200× magnification for agglomerates above 10 µm. Weld lines in black ABS may appear lighter or darker than the surrounding surface depending on local flow-front temperature and pigment distribution. If a mold-surface temperature range of 40°C to 80°C produces acceptable gloss but excessive weld-line visibility, processors should first optimize melt temperature within the 230°C to 260°C window and increase pack pressure before modifying the tool. Raising mold temperature above 80°C may improve weld-line healing but can extend cycle time and risk sticking in deep draw areas. When the part surface specification requires gloss units measured under ISO 2813 at 60°, the production process window can be narrower than ±5°C at the mold surface; conformal cooling channels and real-time mold-surface thermocouples are necessary to hold that band on multicavity tools.

Compared with natural ABS colored at the injection press, a pre-compounded black grade eliminates press-side masterbatch handling and reduces shot-to-shot color variability caused by inconsistent mixer settings. The trade-off is reduced flexibility for color changes and a requirement that the supplier’s pigment dispersion be accepted as fixed. Compared with post-mold painting, black-pigmented ABS removes coating-process VOC emissions and paint-adhesion test burden under ASTM D3359, but an unpainted molded surface has lower resistance to aggressive chemical wipe and may exhibit more visible flow lines. Compared with flame-retardant ABS, a general-purpose black grade has lower density and usually better notched impact, but it is not acceptable for enclosure designs requiring UL 94 V-0. Compared with high-heat ABS, the Vicat softening temperature of a general-purpose grade is typically below 110°C; sustained service above this boundary, or use near heat sources, should be validated by thermocouple-instrumented part testing under end-use air temperature and load.
