Application of Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-9-DG
In thin-wall automotive interior trim production where pillar trim wall sections are reduced to 1.8 mm–2.2 mm for mass reduction, ABS 346A-9-DG is pre-dried at 80 °C for 3 h–4 h to a residual moisture content below 0.05 wt% using desiccant dryers with a −40 °C dew point. The dried material is processed on hydraulic injection moulding machines with clamp forces between 2,500 kN and 4,500 kN and general-purpose screws having an L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1. Melt temperature is held at 235 °C ± 10 °C, and the tool surface is controlled at 45 °C to 60 °C. Under these thermal conditions, high-flow ABS grades with an ISO 1133-1:2022 melt flow index of 20 g/10 min to 30 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg typically fill a 2.0 mm spiral section to 350 mm–500 mm; published spiral-flow data for this specific Dongguan Anshuyi grade are limited and should be established with the production tool.Compliance for automotive interior trim is anchored to ISO 3795:2020, FMVSS 302, VDA 278:2011-10, REACH Annex XVII, and ELV Directive 2000/53/EC. Horizontal burn rate according to ISO 3795:2020 is required not to exceed 100 mm/min for most OEM interior specifications. VOC and FOG fractions are measured by VDA 278:2011-10; typical Class A interior targets require total VOC below 100 µg/g and FOG below 250 µg/g, though final limits are set by each OEM. Cadmium, lead, mercury, hexavalent chromium, and polybrominated biphenyls are controlled under RoHS 2011/65/EU, while ELV 2000/53/EC is applied at end-of-life for vehicles.Virgin-to-regrind ratios for pillar trim and console side panels are typically 90:10 by weight for non-visible rear layers and 100 wt% virgin for visible grained surfaces. The regrind fraction is produced from sprues and runners, passed through a granulator with screen size 6 mm, and blended by loss-in-weight dosing. Repeated thermal cycling of regrind lowers notched Charpy impact strength measured by ISO 179-1:2023 from approximately 18 kJ/m² to 14 kJ/m²–16 kJ/m² after two cycles and raises yellowness index under ASTM D1925 by 0.5–1.2 units, so regrind is excluded from high-gloss Class A surfaces. Production-scale injection moulding uses sequential valve-gated hot runners with 5–7 gates per centre console carrier to place weld lines away from airbag deployment seams. Holding pressure is set at 55%–65% of peak injection pressure, with hold time of 6 s–10 s, screw back pressure at 0.5 MPa–1.0 MPa, and decompression at 3 mm–5 mm. Finished components include A-pillar lower trims, B-pillar upper trims, door beltline finishers, glove box doors, centre console side panels, rear quarter trim panels, and seat side shields.

What Surface Activation Sequence Governs Electroplating Adhesion on This ABS Grade?

Electroplating adhesion on ABS 346A-9-DG begins with selective oxidation of polybutadiene domains in a chromic acid-sulfuric acid etching bath maintained at 62 °C to 68 °C for 6 min to 10 min. The etching solution is typically formulated with 380 g/L–420 g/L chromic acid and 180 g/L–220 g/L sulfuric acid; the process removes surface butadiene and creates micro-roughened anchoring sites without uncontrolled bulk attack. After etching, the moulded preform is neutralised in sodium bisulphite, followed by a palladium-tin activation step and electroless nickel or copper deposition. Poor etch temperature control of ± 2 °C leads to skip plating or plate peeling because the etch depth varies across the part.Decorative plated products are evaluated under ASTM B604-91, ISO 1456:2009, ISO 4527:2003, and RoHS 2011/65/EU. Thermal cycling for plated plastic parts is typically specified as 3 cycles from −30 °C to 75 °C without blistering or adhesion loss. Trivalent chromium systems are used in EU supply chains because hexavalent chromium is restricted under RoHS 2011/65/EU and REACH Annex XVII. Copper-nickel-chromium total deposit thickness is specified at 20 µm–30 µm for exterior automotive segments and 10 µm–20 µm for interior cosmetic parts, depending on corrosion class. The moulded preform uses 100 wt% virgin ABS 346A-9-DG; regrind is excluded because recycled polybutadiene domains etch non-uniformly after prior thermal degradation. If regrind is unavoidable in a non-plated backing structure, it is limited to 5 wt% and is verified by a glacial acetic acid stress test at 20 °C–25 °C for 1 min before plating. Injection moulding prior to electroplating requires a high-gloss tool finish of SPI/SPE A-1 to A-2 and mould temperature of 70 °C to 80 °C to minimise frozen orientation. The plating sequence comprises etching, neutralisation, pre-dip, Pd-Sn activation, electroless nickel at approximately 30 °C, then electrolytic copper, semi-bright nickel, bright nickel, and chromium. Finished terminal components include automotive grille bars, trunk lid garnishes, fog light bezels, wheel centre caps, bathroom tap covers, shower valve handles, cosmetic jar closures, and refrigeration door handles.

Flame-Retardant Classification and UL 94 Compliance in Router and Set-Top Box Housings

In network equipment housing production, ABS 346A-9-DG is used as a high-gloss injection moulding resin where UL 94 HB is acceptable for enclosures that do not exceed flammability requirements. The material is pre-dried at 80 °C for 2 h–4 h, processed at melt temperature 230 °C–250 °C, and moulded with tool surfaces at 45 °C–60 °C. Dimensional stability is assessed by ISO 62:2008 water absorption; typical ABS grades absorb 0.3 wt%–0.5 wt% at saturation, which shifts linear dimensions by 0.1%–0.2% and must be considered for snap-fit clearance above 0.05 mm.Safety compliance is governed by IEC 62368-1:2023, UL 94, IEC 60695-11-10, RoHS 2011/65/EU, and WEEE 2012/19/EU. Neat ABS 346A-9-DG is typically classified at HB; conversion to V-0 requires compounding with a phosphorus-nitrogen flame-retardant masterbatch at 8 wt%–12 wt%, which reduces tensile modulus and increases density by 0.04 g/cm³–0.06 g/cm³. Published data for this specific FR compound configuration are limited; UL Yellow Card status must be revalidated after compounding because the grade is not supplied as a flame-retardant compound.

Moulding of router bottom and top covers uses electric injection moulding machines with clamp forces of 1,000 kN–1,800 kN and mould cavities polished to SPI/SPE A-2. Fast injection velocities of 100 mm/s–150 mm/s are applied to prevent flow marks on high-gloss enclosures; holding pressure is 40 MPa–60 MPa, cooling time is 20 s–35 s for wall sections of 2.0 mm–2.5 mm. Rib-to-wall thickness ratio is maintained at 0.5:1–0.6:1 to avoid visible sink marks opposite internal bosses. Terminal finished products include Wi-Fi router bottom and top covers, set-top box chassis, smart speaker enclosures, USB hub housings, and Ethernet switch covers.Suction-driven floor care equipment and handheld hair care appliances expose ABS 346A-9-DG to continuous service temperatures of 60 °C to 85 °C, requiring heat deflection temperature verification according to ISO 75-2:2013 method A at 1.8 MPa. The resin is pre-dried at 80 °C for 2 h–4 h and injected at melt temperature 230 °C to 250 °C; mould temperature is set at 60 °C for high-gloss external shells to prevent low-temperature flow marks and to achieve surface roughness Ra ≤ 0.05 µm. For vacuum cleaner rear covers with wall thickness 1.8 mm–2.2 mm, multi-cavity hot-runner tools with 2–4 drops per cavity are used; injection pressure is 80 MPa–120 MPa, and cavity pressure sensors maintain 35 MPa–45 MPa for 6 s–8 s.Appliance safety compliance is defined by IEC 60335-1:2020, IEC 60335-2-2:2019 for vacuum cleaners, and IEC 60335-2-23:2019 for hair care appliances. Glow-wire flammability is assessed under IEC 60695-2-11; unattended appliance housings carrying current above 0.5 A typically require glow-wire test temperatures of 650 °C to 850 °C depending on proximity to electrical contacts. RoHS 2011/65/EU and WEEE 2012/19/EU apply to disposal and restricted substance control. Surface gloss is measured by ISO 2813:2014 at 60°; regrind reduction of 2–4 gloss units is considered unacceptable for front shells. The addition ratio for visible external shells is 100 wt% virgin ABS 346A-9-DG. Internal non-appearance parts such as wheel brackets and floor tool adapters are moulded with a virgin-to-regrind ratio of 85:15 by weight; the regrind fraction is generated from cold runners and post-mould trims, granulated through 6 mm screens, and dried with virgin resin. Hot air hair dryer housings with wall thickness 1.5 mm–2.0 mm are filled in 0.8 s–1.2 s to avoid premature freeze-off near grill ribs. Where ultrasonic welding of shell halves is required, post-moulding annealing at 70 °C for 1 h reduces weld-line cracking. Terminal finished products include canister vacuum cleaner wheel brackets, floor tool adapters, hair dryer main shells, straightener housing halves, and electric iron heel rests.

When Tight Interlocking Dimensional Tolerances Exceed ±0.02 mm

Interlocking toy bricks and construction system elements require cavity-to-cavity dimensional repeatability of ± 0.02 mm across multi-cavity moulds, which constrains melt viscosity, mould fill imbalance, and post-moulding shrinkage. ABS 346A-9-DG is dried to ≤ 0.03 wt% moisture and injected at melt temperature 245 °C ± 5 °C; the mould is held at 65 °C to 70 °C. The clamp force per cavity is 45 kN–65 kN for brick heights of 9.6 mm–12.7 mm, and holding pressure is maintained until gate freeze to stabilise stud height and clutch force. Shrinkage after 24 h conditioning at 23 °C and 50% relative humidity is monitored by CMM programmes conforming to ISO 10360-2.Toy safety compliance is anchored to EN 71-3:2021, ASTM F963-23, REACH Annex XVII, and CPSIA Section 108. EN 71-3:2021 limits migration of 19 elements, including aluminium below 2,250 mg/kg, barium below 1,500 mg/kg, and lead below 2.0 mg/kg in dried toy material; ASTM F963-23 applies soluble heavy metal limits for the US market. Phthalate plasticisers are restricted under REACH Annex XVII entries 51 and 52 and CPSIA Section 108 at 0.1 wt%. Mechanical testing under EN 71-1:2021 includes drop, torque, and tension tests associated with small-part release; components intended for children under 36 months must not detach with dimensions below 30 mm.Formulation is maintained at 100 wt% virgin ABS 346A-9-DG for structural interlocking components; regrind is not permitted in small parts because multi-pigment batch traceability and recycled content compliance become difficult. Colour masterbatch is added at 1 wt%–2 wt%, and titanium dioxide pigment loadings up to 4 wt% are used for white base bricks, which can raise melt viscosity and require a 5 °C–10 °C increase in melt temperature. Production is conducted on high-speed injection machines with moulds of 64–256 cavities and cold-runner systems. Injection velocity is set to 120 mm/s–180 mm/s, with total cycle time of 10 s–14 s for 2.0 mm wall thickness. Tunnel gates maintain gate vestige ≤ 0.05 mm; hot-runner systems are avoided to improve ejection consistency. Terminal finished products include interlocking bricks, base plates, gear wheels, axles, beam elements, and educational robot kit structural members.High-gloss cosmetic packaging with thin-walled closures is injection moulded from ABS 346A-9-DG using polished mould surfaces of SPI/SPE A-1 to A-2, because the material replicates micro-texture down to 0.5 µm. The resin is pre-dried at 75 °C for 3 h in a desiccant dryer with a −40 °C dew point and processed at melt temperature 235 °C to 245 °C; mould temperature is set at 55 °C to 65 °C. Screw rotation speed is 60 min⁻¹–100 min⁻¹ with back pressure 0.8 MPa–1.5 MPa to disperse 1 wt%–2 wt% colour masterbatch without splay. Multi-cavity cold-runner tools with 8–16 cavities are used for lipstick cases and compact powder boxes; fill time is 0.4 s–0.8 s for wall thickness 1.2 mm–1.8 mm, and injection pressure is 100 MPa–140 MPa.Cosmetic packaging in the European Union is governed by Regulation (EC) No 1223/2009, Article 10 safety assessment and Article 17 traceability, with packaging materials required to control heavy metals and CMR substances. REACH Annex XVII restricts cadmium and lead in articles, and RoHS 2011/65/EU may apply if electrical components are embedded in the package. For indirect contact with lip and eye formulations, migration testing is performed under food-contact legislation where applicable; ABS is not considered a direct food-contact polymer under 21 CFR 177.1020 without specific migration testing. Surface decoration by vacuum metallisation requires surface dyne level ≥ 42 mN/m, achieved by corona treatment before printing or lacquering.Formulation addition ratio is 98 wt%–99 wt% ABS 346A-9-DG with 1 wt%–2 wt% solvent-stable colour masterbatch or liquid colour; metallic effect masterbatch is added at 0.5 wt%–1.0 wt% for caps. Regrind is avoided on glossy exterior surfaces but may be used up to 10 wt% in inner threads and under-layers if those surfaces are subsequently decorated. Vacuum metallisation is performed at 10⁻³ Pa; UV-curable lacquers are applied after moulding to improve scratch resistance and colour retention. Terminal finished products include lipstick case bases, mascara closures, compact mirror housings, fragrance cap outer shells, roller ball collars, and cream jar outer bodies.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Among acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene resins supplied from Dongguan Anshuyi, ABS 346A-9-DG is identified as an ABS terpolymer product for injection moulding and extrusion-related conversion. Because the alphanumeric suffix -9-DG contains no defined ISO or ASTM code, the grade cannot be fully characterized from its model string alone. Commercial unmodified ABS grades typically exhibit a density of 1.03–1.07 g/cm³ under ISO 1183-1:2019, a melt mass-flow rate of 5–60 g/10 min at 220 °C/10 kg under ISO 1133-1:2022, and a tensile stress at yield of 35–50 MPa under ISO 527-2:2012. The terpolymer structure combines a styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase, grafted polybutadiene rubber domains, and free SAN chains; this morphology controls the balance of rigidity and room-temperature impact resistance observed in appliance bodies, power-tool housings, and computer monitor rear shells. Published data for this specific configuration is limited, and grade-specific release limits should replace these background ranges when a formal production decision is made.

Moisture control is the first processing constraint. Equilibrium moisture absorption in ABS at 23 °C and 50 % RH is reported below 0.45 % by mass, yet the visible threshold for surface defects is far lower when the melt path includes hot runners or high-speed screw recovery. Desiccant-bed drying at 75–85 °C for 2–4 h with a feed-air dew point no higher than -30 °C is standard practice; residual moisture should remain below 0.05 %. If ambient relative humidity exceeds 60 %, hopper residence time should be reduced to prevent re-adsorption before the feed throat. Extrusion operations using the same grade for sheet or profile stock require identical moisture discipline, because in-line rheometry may not detect moisture-induced micro-bubbles until the die lip is inspected.

What Melt-Pressure Losses Govern Thin-Wall Filling of ABS 346A-9-DG?

Thin-wall filling is controlled by apparent viscosity under the gate shear-rate range rather than by a single melt-flow index value. For unmodified ABS, apparent viscosity falls with increasing shear rate, but the rubber-grafted SAN phase can enter flow instability at gate shear rates above 30,000 s⁻¹; this instability may appear as gate blush or reduced weld-line impact resistance in parts with wall thickness below 1.2 mm. Melt temperature at the nozzle is typically held at 240–250 °C, but nozzle temperature should not be raised above 260 °C simply to reduce viscosity because residence time above 250 °C accelerates polybutadiene gel-particle formation and SAN chain scission.

Injection pressure for cold-runner tools is generally set between 80 MPa and 120 MPa, with holding pressure at 50–70 % of peak filling pressure for 3–7 s. Gate seal time determines the transition from velocity control to pressure control; a gate-freeze time below 0.5 s in thin-wall multi-cavity tools can produce inconsistent shrinkage and gloss differences. Production-scale injection machines with clamp force in the 800–1,500 kN range often use a screw diameter of 30–45 mm; the resulting intensification ratio requires hydraulic pressure limits to be calculated from screw area, not from barrel pressure alone.

Melt-temperature profiles on a three-zone reciprocating screw are normally maintained at 200–220 °C in the rear zone, 230–240 °C in the middle zone, and 240–250 °C at the nozzle. A shut-off nozzle is preferred over an open nozzle to reduce drool from the rubber-modified melt. When the production line stops for more than 5 min at full barrel temperature, the residual shot should be purged with a styrene-based purge compound to limit degraded gel particles. Mold-temperature control is set between 40 °C and 80 °C; mold temperatures below 35 °C have been associated with flow-mark defects and lower notched impact values at knit lines on ABS mouldings produced on clamp-force machines under 1,000 kN.

Across production lots, batch-to-batch variability in melt viscosity of ABS resins is typically controlled by the supplier within ±5 % of the nominal melt-flow rate. On moulding lines, this variation appears as fill-time drift when material is switched without adjusting stroke cutoff; injection moulding machines with screw-recovery monitoring and cushion control are less sensitive to such drift.

For unpainted high-gloss surfaces, the melt-temperature window may be as narrow as ±5 °C from the nominal nozzle set point because gloss and orange-peel texture are sensitive to melt viscosity. On machines with poor heater-band tune, nozzle temperature oscillation beyond 5 °C is visible on dark-tinted mouldings; therefore, proportional-integral-derivative control with thermocouple verification at the nozzle is recommended.

Mechanical Response Variables After Standard Conditioning

Mechanical comparisons are valid only when specimen preparation follows ISO 294-1:2017 and conditioning follows ISO 291:2008 at 23 °C and 50 % RH. The table below records the generic unmodified ABS envelope; it is not a certificate of analysis for Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-9-DG.

When Cabinet-Shell Requirements Shift From Impact Retention to Flame Retardancy

If the supplier documentation does not explicitly list a UL 94 rating for Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-9-DG, the grade should not be treated as flame-retardant ABS merely because it processes at similar barrel temperatures. Flame-retardant ABS grades for unattended appliance enclosures are routinely benchmarked against UL 94 V-0 at 1.5 mm and IEC 60695-2-11 glow-wire end-product tests at 750 °C or 850 °C, depending on the equipment standard applicable to the final device. Those grades typically contain brominated flame retardants, antimony trioxide synergist, or phosphorus-based systems; the additives increase density to 1.15–1.25 g/cm³, reduce notched Izod impact to 5–15 kJ/m², and lower heat deflection temperature at 1.8 MPa to 70–90 °C.

The same logic applies to electroplating ABS and high-heat ABS. Electroplating grades rely on higher butadiene content and a controlled morphology that permits chromic-acid etching, which is not a safe assumption for a general-purpose or high-flow designation. Substituting 346A-9-DG into a plating line without supplier confirmation of plateable grade may produce skip plating and poor adhesion under thermal cycling, a failure reported in production trials when unqualified grades are substituted. High-heat ABS grades produced with α-methylstyrene or maleimide comonomer raise heat deflection temperature to 100–115 °C but reduce melt flow and increase processing viscosity.

For a side-by-side differentiation of Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-9-DG from adjacent ABS families, the following comparative boundaries are used in polymer substitution audits. The values are representative of unmodified and compounded ABS grades; they do not confirm that 346A-9-DG sits in any single cell until the supplier datasheet is released.

ABS family Melt mass-flow rate Heat deflection temperature, 1.8 MPa Notched Izod impact, 23 °C Typical processing constraint
    General-purpose ABS 10–35 g/10 min 80–100 °C 15–35 kJ/m² Balanced melt flow and impact
    High-flow ABS 30–60 g/10 min 75–95 °C 8–20 kJ/m² Thin-wall fill, reduced impact
    High-heat ABS 5–15 g/10 min 100–115 °C 10–25 kJ/m² Higher melt temperature required
    Flame-retardant ABS 20–50 g/10 min 70–90 °C 5–15 kJ/m² Density above 1.15 g/cm³, additive plate-out risk
    Electroplating ABS 10–30 g/10 min 85–100 °C 10–25 kJ/m² Controlled rubber morphology, etchability

Thermal Aging, Low-Temperature Brittleness, and the Role of Rubber-Phase Crosslinking

Continuous use of unmodified ABS above 70–80 °C shifts the failure mode from ductile yielding to brittle fracture as the polybutadiene phase oxidizes and crosslinks. Underwriters Laboratories Yellow Card relative thermal index values for generic ABS often range from 60 °C to 85 °C mechanical without impact; whether Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-9-DG carries a published RTI value requires verification in the UL 746B records. At the opposite end, notched impact resistance declines at freezer temperatures. Although the polybutadiene glass transition is below -80 °C, the styrene-acrylonitrile continuous phase and local notch geometry control brittle failure; unmodified ABS is generally not selected for impact-critical parts at -30 °C or lower.

Environmental stress cracking is a parallel limitation. Contact with methyl ethyl ketone, toluene, ethyl acetate, or some plasticizers under mechanical load can produce crazing and premature fracture in ABS components. Applications requiring chemical wipe-down with these solvents should be validated by ISO 175 immersion or contact testing on moulded plaques, not on resin pellets alone.

In extrusion and thermoforming operations, Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 346A-9-DG enters a different thermal and rheological window. Sheet extrusion requires melt temperatures of 210–245 °C at the die, a polished roll-stack surface temperature of 80–100 °C, and controlled draw resonance below the critical haul-off ratio. Thermoforming of ABS sheet is performed at a sheet surface temperature of 140–180 °C; below this range the sheet tears at the clamp frame, and above it the sheet sags and thins unevenly. Extrusion-grade ABS with higher melt strength may outperform an injection-moulding grade in deep-draw thermoforming; therefore, using 346A-9-DG in heavy-gauge thermoforming should be preceded by sag-time and melt-extensibility trials on the actual sheet line.
