Application of Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey

Pre-coloured Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey is integrated into appliance control panel and small appliance housing production using single-screw injection moulding machines with screw L/D ratios from 20:1 to 25:1. The resin is dehumidified at 80 °C for 2–4 h to reach residual moisture no greater than 0.05 wt%; hopper residency is limited to avoid hygroscopic regain when plant relative humidity exceeds 60 %. Barrel temperature zones from feed to nozzle are normally set at 210–230 °C, 220–240 °C, 230–250 °C, and 230–250 °C, with nozzle temperature maintained at 240–250 °C. Mould surface temperature is held between 40 °C and 70 °C depending on wall thickness and required surface gloss. Thin-wall control panels with nominal wall sections of 2.0–3.0 mm are filled within 1.0–2.5 s; injection velocity is profiled so the melt front reaches the end of the cavity before the frozen layer closes the flow path. Hold pressure is applied at 50–70 % of peak hydraulic injection pressure for 4–8 s, while screw back pressure is held between 5 bar and 10 bar to densify the melt and stabilise pigment dispersion. Finished parts include washing machine control panels, air-conditioner front frames, and small kitchen appliance housings where the grey shade reduces visible dust and fingerprint marking. Because this is a pre-coloured grade, no separate colour masterbatch is required; if minor shade correction is needed, an ABS-based grey masterbatch is added at 1–2 wt%, but higher loadings can alter melt viscosity and must be checked by ISO 1133-1:2022. Regrind from sprues and rejected parts is added at up to 20 wt% in non-appearance surfaces only; repeated thermal exposure can shift the grey shade and reduce impact strength. For appliance safety compliance, Vicat softening temperature is evaluated under ISO 306 method B50, and ball pressure resistance under IEC 60695-10-2 is required when the part is adjacent to current-carrying components. General-purpose ABS typically carries only a HB flammability rating under UL 94, so glow-wire requirements above 650 °C may require a flame-retardant alternative or larger clearance design. Tooling for long production runs is specified with hardened steel cavities and texturing depth no less than 20 µm; finer textures can produce visible gloss bands at gate locations after 100,000 cycles.

What Limits Unpainted ABS 322A Grey in Automotive Interior Trim Substrates?

To avoid paint on lower interior trim surfaces, Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey is used in seat side shields, lower instrument panel trims, parking-brake handle covers, and rear quarter trim panels. The granulate is dried in a desiccant dryer at 80 °C for 2–4 h with a dew point no higher than -20 °C. Barrel temperatures are maintained from 220 °C to 240 °C; sustained melt temperatures above 260 °C initiate rubber-phase degradation, which appears as brown streaking and increases free styrene content in the melt. Injection speed is controlled to keep a uniform flow-front velocity across long flow paths; parts with flow-length-to-wall-thickness ratios above 150:1 frequently require sequential valve-gate triggering to prevent hesitation lines and jetting at rib intersections. Mould temperature is held between 50 °C and 70 °C for textured surfaces; lower mould temperatures produce gloss variation between thick bosses and thin walls, which is unacceptable for unpainted dark-grey interior parts. The material is not inherently scratch-resistant; where grain retention after fingernail or Erichsen scratch testing is required, surface hardening with UV-cured acrylic or polyurethane clearcoat is applied. Odour and total volatile performance is validated under VDA 277 or an equivalent thermal desorption method; post-mould conditioning at 60–70 °C for 2 h may reduce residual volatiles. Mechanical property verification uses tensile testing to ISO 527-2, flexural modulus to ISO 178, and notched impact to ISO 180/A at 23 °C and -20 °C. General-purpose ABS grades commonly exhibit notched Izod values between 15 kJ/m² and 30 kJ/m² at room temperature, but published data for Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey specifically is limited and must be confirmed on moulded plaques from the production tool. Automotive volumes using unpainted ABS grey are highest in parts not exposed to direct sunlight; if UV stability above 300 h xenon-arc exposure under ISO 4892-2 without visible delta-yellowing is required, a UV-stabilised or painted variant should be specified.

When Grey ABS 322A Replaces Flame-Retardant ABS in Non-Exposed Electrical Housings

Electrical distribution board covers, DIN rail terminal shrouds, and low-voltage junction box lids are moulded from Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey where the end-product standard classifies the housing as non-current-carrying and not directly exposed to hot-wire ignition sources. The resin is pre-dried to 0.05 wt% maximum moisture and processed at melt temperatures of 220–245 °C with mould temperatures of 50–60 °C to maintain flatness on large covers. Long flat lids with wall thicknesses of 2.5–3.5 mm are gated using a full-width film gate or multiple edge gates; holding pressure is applied until gate freeze is confirmed by screw position stabilisation, normally 6–10 s after the cavity is filled. Warpage is controlled by minimising thickness transitions and by positioning ribs perpendicular to the principal shrinkage direction. The grey colour provides contrast for wire colour coding and terminal markers in control cabinets. General-purpose ABS grades are typically classified HB under UL 94, and Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey should not be used for enclosures requiring V-0 or 5VA unless an independent flammability test on the finished part demonstrates otherwise. Glow-wire testing under IEC 60695-2-11 at 850 °C may ignite general-purpose ABS depending on section thickness and geometry; published data for this specific grade under glow-wire conditions is limited. The compliance checklist below assembles the electrical safety standards that should be applied before this grade is released for an electrical enclosure programme.

Boss design for electrical covers uses a nominal outer-to-inner diameter ratio of 2:1 and draft angles of 0.5–1.0° to prevent ejection stress whitening on light-grey surfaces. Stress whitening around thread-forming screw bosses is a known failure mode when the boss wall is too thick or the mould surface is too cold; thread-forming screw torque should be limited by end-of-line driver settings validated on moulded boss arrays. For electrical enclosure applications, creepage and clearance distances are fixed by IEC 60664-1 and do not change with material selection; the use of a non-flame-retardant ABS only affects insulation material group and glow-wire acceptance.

In consumer display and point-of-sale terminal programmes, Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey is used for rear covers, terminal housings, and card-reader shells without secondary painting. Thin-wall sections of 2.0–2.5 mm are filled at high injection velocity to achieve a fill time below 2.0 s; screw recovery and decompression settings are adjusted to avoid air entrapment. Gate size is set to 50–70 % of the nominal wall thickness to produce shear heating at the gate without jetting. Mould temperature is maintained at 45–65 °C to balance gloss and cycle time. Draft angles are specified at 0.5–1.0° on untextured ribs and 1.5–2.0° on textured external surfaces. For large flat monitor rear covers, wall thickness variation is held within ±10 % of nominal, and multiple gates are sequenced to reduce differential shrinkage that manifests as warpage after paintless surface finishing. The general-purpose grey ABS is not inherently electrically dissipative; assembly lines handling bare boards inside housings may require anti-static additive masterbatch at 1–3 wt%, which reduces surface resistivity only if the additive is optimised for ABS and processed within the recommended barrel temperature window. Silver streaking on the grey surface can occur if residual moisture exceeds 0.05 wt%, if melt temperature exceeds 255 °C, or if screw recovery speed is set too high and air is drawn through the hopper. Mechanical verification for snap-fit cantilevers is performed by flexural testing to ISO 178; general-purpose ABS flexural modulus usually ranges from 2000 MPa to 2600 MPa, but published data for this specific grade is limited and should be confirmed on moulded plaques before tool finalisation. For parts requiring EMI shielding, electroless copper/nickel plating or conductive paint is required because standard ABS is not conductive.

Sheet Extrusion History and Plug-Assist Forming of Grey ABS 322A

Extruded ABS sheet from Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey is produced on single-screw extruders with L/D ratios from 30:1 to 36:1 using a barrier screw and mixing section to homogenise the pre-coloured melt. Barrel temperatures from feed to die are 190–210 °C, 200–220 °C, 210–230 °C, and 220–240 °C; die temperature is kept at 230–245 °C to prevent melt fracture at the lip exit. The sheet is calendered through a three-roll stack with roll temperatures of 80–100 °C for gauges of 1.5–4.0 mm. Thermoforming is carried out at sheet surface temperatures of 130–160 °C; lower temperatures cause incomplete reproduction of fine pebble or wood-grain textures and can increase frozen-in orientation, while higher temperatures produce sag and wall-thickness thinning below 50 % of original gauge. Luggage shell tools use aluminium cavities with temperature-controlled plug assist at 80–100 °C for draw ratios above 0.5:1; plug geometry is designed to push material into corners without excessive local thinning. Trim scrap is re-extruded into non-visible sheet layers at no more than 25 wt%; higher regrind ratios can shift grey shade because of thermal oxidative darkening and reduce low-temperature impact strength. Melt flow rate of sheet feedstock is verified under ISO 1133-1:2022 before production runs. Published data for Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey in sheet extrusion and thermoforming is limited, so process settings should be validated on a pilot line using the actual sheet gauge and regrind fraction before commercial run length is committed.

Evaluating Low-Temperature Impact Before Replacing PC/ABS in Handheld Tool Housings

For handheld tool housings where drop impact loads are moderate, Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey is considered for small electric tool shells, vacuum cleaner bodies, and industrial handheld meter enclosures before substitution of PC/ABS. The resin is dried at 80 °C for 3–4 h and processed at melt temperatures of 225–245 °C with mould temperatures of 45–65 °C. For thick screw bosses around motor mounts, hold pressure is applied at 55–65 bar for 8–12 s; cooling time is set so that ejection temperature is below the Vicat softening point measured under ISO 306 method B50. Impact strength is evaluated with Izod or Charpy methods under ASTM D256-10 or ISO 179-1/1eA; general-purpose ABS often shows notched impact values between 15 kJ/m² and 30 kJ/m² at 23 °C, but values below 8 kJ/m² at -20 °C can occur. Because published data for this specific grade is limited, low-temperature drop testing on moulded housings is mandatory before replacing PC/ABS in portable tool programmes. Chemical resistance is assessed under ISO 175 against hydraulic oils, cutting fluids, and common cleaning agents; general-purpose ABS is susceptible to environmental stress cracking when exposed to aromatic hydrocarbons, chlorinated solvents, methyl ethyl ketone, and esters. Silicone-based mould release agents should not be used if pad printing or adhesion of labels is planned; corona or plasma pre-treatment may be required after moulding to raise surface energy for ink adhesion.

    Certification & Compliance
    More Introduction

Product identification for Dongguan Anshuyi ABS 322A Grey begins with the grade designation, which denotes a grey-coloured acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer supplied in pellet form for injection moulding and extrusion. The 322A designation places the material within the general-purpose ABS category, but the pre-compounded grey colour distinguishes it from natural and masterbatch-coloured grades. Processors requesting lot-specific values should obtain a certificate of analysis because published data for this specific configuration is limited; typical ABS values are not a substitute for batch-level testing.

What Injection Moulding Parameters Are Recommended for 322A Grey?

Moisture uptake in ABS is low, but hydrolytic degradation occurs if pellets are processed above 0.05% moisture. The resin is dried in a desiccant dryer at 80–90°C for 2–4 hours, with a dew point below -30°C. Moisture content is measured by ISO 15512:2019. Barrel temperatures are set from hopper to nozzle in the range 210–250°C; mould temperature is maintained between 30°C and 70°C. Higher mould temperatures within this band improve surface gloss and weld-line strength but extend cycle time. Injection pressure typically falls between 70 MPa and 140 MPa, with hold pressure at 50–80% of peak injection pressure. Back pressure of 0.3–0.7 MPa prevents colour streaking and improves melt homogeneity. Screw L/D ratio of 20:1 to 24:1 and compression ratio of 2.0:1 to 2.5:1 are typical for ABS; excessive shear from high-compression screws can cause yellowing of the grey base tone.

Rheological data for lot acceptance should be obtained by capillary rheometry according to ISO 11443:2021. At 230°C and apparent shear rates from 100 s⁻¹ to 5000 s⁻¹, general-purpose ABS typically exhibits shear-thinning with power-law indices between 0.3 and 0.6. For 322A Grey, the presence of inorganic grey pigments may increase viscosity by 2–5% relative to the natural counterpart, although published data for this exact grade is limited. This viscosity shift should be considered when transferring existing moulding parameters from a natural ABS tool; a 5–10°C increase in melt temperature or a 10–15% reduction in injection velocity can compensate in thin-wall sections below 1.5 mm. The nozzle should be an open nozzle or a controlled shut-off nozzle with a bore diameter of 3.0–5.0 mm for shot weights up to 250 g. Decompression after plasticating is set at 3–5 mm to prevent stringing; excessive decompression pulls air into the melt and creates silvery streaks on the grey surface. Cushion size is maintained at 3–6 mm to ensure uniform packing pressure transmission. Screw rotation speed for 45 mm to 60 mm diameter screws is typically 30–60 rpm; higher speeds may generate frictional heat above the barrel set point and cause local colour shift.

Specimen preparation for the above tensile and flexural measurements follows ISO 294-1:2017 for injection moulding of multipurpose test specimens. The grey colourant system may contain inorganic or organic pigments; inorganic pigments such as titanium dioxide or carbon black can act as heterogeneous nucleation sites but do not normally alter the amorphous phase morphology of ABS. Batch-to-batch variation in pigment dispersion should be monitored by microscopy or by colour measurement against CIELAB coordinates under D65 illumination. Published data for the exact colour tolerance limits of 322A Grey is limited, so incoming lot acceptance should include spectrophotometric records and retention plaques. In high-volume moulding, a colour measurement every 2 hours with an inline or benchtop spectrophotometer is common to detect pigment dispersion drift or thermal degradation. Colour consistency of 322A Grey is evaluated with d/8° geometry, specular component excluded, D65 illuminant, and 10° observer. Typical CIELAB tolerances for dark grey lots may fall within ΔL* ±0.3, Δa* ±0.15, and Δb* ±0.2, although published data for this specific grade is limited.

When 322A Grey Replaces Natural ABS in Thin-Wall Enclosures

The pre-coloured grey grade is used in thin-wall enclosures where dimensional stability, low gloss, and consistent colour are required. In electronic housing production using moulding machines with clamp force from 1200 kN to 1800 kN and shot weights between 80 g and 250 g, the grade is processed with hot runner temperatures from 230°C to 245°C and valve gate timing below 0.5 s. Gate land length should be kept below 1.0 mm to prevent premature freeze-off in walls of 2.0 mm to 2.5 mm. Weld lines formed at hole features can reduce impact strength by 30–50% compared with unfilled sections; placing gates away from stress-bearing bosses and using mould temperatures above 45°C mitigates but does not eliminate weld-line weakness. Sink marks on ribs and bosses occur when local wall thickness exceeds 60% of the nominal wall. Rib thickness should be limited to 0.5–0.7 times the adjoining wall thickness, and bosses should be cored to maintain uniform shrinkage. For grey surfaces with texture, sink-mark thresholds become visible at depth changes above 2–3 µm under raking light; packing pressure and gate freeze time should be optimized using cavity pressure sensors rather than timer-only transfer.

In liquid crystal display bezels and router housings, the grey surface is often specified to a gloss level of 5–15 GU at 60° measurement geometry under ISO 2813:2014. Mould temperature is the dominant factor controlling gloss; increasing mould temperature from 30°C to 60°C can raise gloss by 5–10 GU on polished tool steel. Texture depth replication requires adequate packing pressure; a hold pressure at the upper end of 50–80% of peak injection pressure is necessary when mold surfaces use texture depths greater than 25 µm. Venting for ABS 322A Grey should use vent depths of 0.02–0.04 mm and land lengths of 1.0–2.0 mm to prevent gas burn marks without flash. In multi-cavity hot runner systems, cavity-to-cavity fill imbalance below 3% by shot weight is recommended; otherwise, grey parts may show visible colour differences due to residence time variations. The mould steel should be hardened to 48–52 HRC when abrasive pigments are present, because some grey formulations contain titanium dioxide or mixed metal oxides that increase tool wear compared with unfilled ABS.

On production-scale equipment, the most common defects for pre-coloured ABS 322A Grey are moisture-induced splay, gate blush, jetting, and weld-line discoloration. Splay appears as silvery or white streaks radiating from the gate; it is traced to moisture above 0.05% or excessive melt temperature. Gate blush presents as a dull halo near the gate; it is reduced by slowing injection velocity through the gate below 300 mm/s and increasing gate diameter to at least 60% of wall thickness. Jetting on grey parts is more visible than on natural resin because the surface contrast highlights flow marks; a tab or fan gate with a land length of 0.5–1.0 mm prevents jetting by creating a smooth flow front. Weld-line discoloration can result from pigment orientation at flow fronts and is addressed by raising mould temperature to 50°C or above.

At relative humidity above 60%, open storage of ABS pellets must be limited to fewer than 30 minutes before transfer to a closed hopper dryer because surface moisture adsorption is rapid. The use of a central drying system with a dew point below -30°C and an air flow of 0.15–0.30 m³/min per kg/h of resin throughput is recommended. Return air temperature should be logged; a drop below 70°C indicates moisture desorption has stalled. Dried pellets that are not consumed within 2 hours should be re-dried. These procedures are consistent with ISO 15512:2019 moisture measurement and are standard for all ABS grades, including pre-coloured variants.

Does the Grey Colourant Alter Drying and Thermal Stability Boundaries?

Thermogravimetric analysis of pigmented ABS generally shows initial mass loss onset near 250°C in an inert atmosphere; in air, oxidative degradation accelerates above 220°C. The grey colourant system may increase apparent viscosity slightly but does not alter the recommended drying envelope of 80–90°C. Residence time in the barrel should not exceed 6 minutes at melt temperatures above 240°C, because prolonged residence causes the butadiene phase to degrade and shifts the grey colour toward yellow. Purging after shutdown with a low-viscosity polyethylene or dedicated ABS purge compound prevents carbonized material from contaminating subsequent light-coloured products. Regrind of 322A Grey can be incorporated up to 20% by mass without significant shift in tensile modulus if the regrind is dry, dust-free, and free of mixed-colour contamination. Repeated heat histories reduce impact strength by 5–10% per pass; therefore, melt flow ratio should be monitored by ISO 1133-1:2022 after every 5 regrind cycles.

Mould shrinkage for unfilled ABS typically ranges from 0.4% to 0.7% in the flow direction and 0.5% to 0.8% across flow, depending on wall thickness and packing. For grey 322A, pigment nucleating effects may slightly reduce anisotropy; however, published data for this exact grade is limited. Warpage prediction should use pressure-specific volume-temperature data obtained by ISO 17744:2004 or equivalent CAE software, not generic shrinkage factors.

Distinction from High-Heat ABS and PC/ABS Alloys

Compared with natural general-purpose ABS, the grey 322A grade removes the need for a separate masterbatch metering unit and reduces colour variation associated with inconsistent masterbatch feeding. However, because the base resin is pre-pigmented, the moulder cannot adjust colour strength at the press. In applications where colour tolerance ΔE*ab is below 0.5 under D65 illumination, incoming lot qualification should include spectrophotometric measurement and an appropriate acceptance sampling plan such as ISO 2859-1:2017.

High-heat ABS grades with Vicat B50 values above 105°C require barrel temperatures from 250°C to 270°C and are used in automotive interior trim exposed to 85°C continuous service. If 322A Grey is general-purpose, continuous service should be limited to below 70°C unless UV/thermal stabilizers are specified. Published data for the exact heat ageing performance of 322A Grey is limited; therefore, validation testing per ISO 175:2010 is required for any intended contact with automotive interior fluids. PC/ABS alloys with typical notched Izod impact values above 40 kJ/m² at -20°C outperform ABS 322A Grey in cold-impact applications; however, PC/ABS alloys require higher drying temperatures of 100–120°C and are more sensitive to alkaline processing residues. The choice between ABS 322A Grey and PC/ABS should be based on test data generated under ISO 6603-2:2000 for multiaxial impact, not solely on datasheet comparisons.

Secondary operations on the grey substrate are limited by the same surface sensitivity as other ABS grades. Solvent-based cleaning agents should be screened for environmental stress cracking resistance under ISO 22088-3:2005 because ABS is sensitive to some ketones and chlorinated solvents. Adhesive bonding is generally conducted with solvent cements, cyanoacrylate, or two-part acrylics; lap shear strength varies with adherend thickness and joint design and should be tested per ISO 4587:2003. Surface energy before printing should be raised to at least 38–42 mN/m, measured by ISO 8296:2003, because the pre-coloured surface can carry processing additives that reduce ink wetting.

Material compliance documentation for 322A Grey should include a declaration for hazardous substances under the IEC 62321 series, with lead and cadmium quantified by IEC 62321-5:2013 and mercury by IEC 62321-4:2013. The grade should not be used for food-contact or medical devices unless the supplier provides specific regulatory letters; general-purpose ABS grades are not presumed compliant with EU 10/2011 or FDA 21 CFR 180.22. REACH candidate list screening per Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 should be performed on the colour concentrate as well as the base resin, because pigments and processing stabilizers can introduce substances of very high concern.
