Application of DL Chemical VLDPE VL0003

On high-speed cast stretch lines producing machine pallet wrap at 250–350 m/min, DL Chemical VLDPE VL0003 is introduced into the skin layer of a five-layer coextruded film at 10–25 wt% with C8-LLDPE. The resin class is characterized by a density below 0.910 g/cm³ measured per ISO 1183-1:2019. Melt flow rate is verified per ISO 1133-1:2022 at 190 °C/2.16 kg. Extruder specifications include a single-screw machine with 30:1 L/D, barrier screw, and Maddock mixing section. Melt temperature is maintained at 235–255 °C. The cast roll temperature is controlled at 18–24 °C. Die lip gap is set at 0.5–0.8 mm. A vacuum box and an air knife pin the melt curtain to the first chill roll. Film thickness for machine stretch typically ranges from 12 µm to 25 µm. The low-density ethylene-α-olefin segments delay strain hardening under high draw ratios. Puncture resistance is recorded per ASTM D5748. At 12 µm, the film is also tested for free-falling dart impact per ASTM D1709 Method A. Converter specifications commonly require no break below 300 g.

Surface cling is generated by migration of a tackifier. A polyisobutylene or sorbitan oleate masterbatch is side-arm fed at 0.5–1.5 wt%. The VL0003-containing skin is corona treated to 38–42 dyn/cm while the opposite surface is left untreated. Stretch force and load retention are analyzed on a stretch film tester at 150–250% pre-stretch. Because VLDPE-rich skins soften under roll compression, anti-block silica is incorporated at 1,000–3,000 ppm. Pre-drying is not required unless pellet surface condensation is observed after outdoor storage at relative humidity above 80%. In that case desiccant drying at 60 °C for 4 h prevents cosmetic defects. End products include machine wrap, hand wrap, heavy-duty shipping sacks, and agricultural silage film. Silage film converters typically add UV stabilizers at 0.3–0.8 wt% for field exposure.

What Controls Seal Initiation Temperature in High-Speed Vertical Form-Fill-Seal Pouch Converting?

Multilayer flexible packaging for dry foods, frozen goods, and liquid sachets uses VL0003 in the sealant web. A typical structure is 12 µm BOPET or BOPP print web / solventless adhesive / 40–80 µm polyethylene sealant. The sealant layer contains VL0003 at 20–40 wt% compounded with LLDPE or LDPE. The seal initiation window is characterized per ASTM F88/F88M on a flat seal tester with 0.5 mm NIP width, 0.4 MPa seal pressure, and 0.5 s dwell. Typically, VL0003 shifts the seal initiation point to 75–90 °C. This is 8–12 °C lower than a standard LDPE sealant of equal thickness. Hot tack force is measured per ASTM F1921. At 80–100 °C seal bar temperature, the peel force measured at 200 mm/min remains above 2 N/15 mm in the hot-tack window required for 50–80 cycles/min VFFS equipment. These values are validation targets, not grade certificate values.

In liquid sachet lines, seal through product contamination is a critical boundary. A seal layer containing VL0003 at 30 wt% enables caulking flow into creases and gusset folds under 0.6 MPa seal pressure. The seal bar temperature is set between 130 °C and 160 °C. Dwell time does not exceed 0.3 s to protect the reverse-printed BOPET from distortion. Oxygen transmission is measured per ASTM D3985 at 23 °C/0% RH. Water vapor transmission is measured per ASTM F1249 at 38 °C/90% RH. The barrier layer controls these values, but sealant thickness and density influence flex-crack resistance. Published data for the exact VL0003 grade in retort or microwaveable structures is limited. The sealant is not recommended for retort above 121 °C because seal creep and channel leakers occur under overpressure. End products include frozen vegetable pouches, snack packets, and stand-up pouches for liquid hand-soap refills.

Tack-Up Conditions and ISO 11607 Seal Strength Windows for Medical Lidding

Terminally sterilized medical device packaging uses a coated Tyvek or medical paper lidding against a rigid PETG or HIPS tray. The sealant layer in the peelable film may be formulated from VL0003 and LDPE or EVA. Seal thickness ranges from 25 µm to 60 µm. Sealing is performed on a tray sealer operating at 105–120 °C, 0.5–1.0 s dwell, and 60–100 psi jaw pressure. Seal strength is tested per ASTM F88/F88M with a 15 mm wide specimen and 200–300 mm/min peel speed. For peelable lidding, a validated seal strength window of 1.0–3.5 N/15 mm is common. The lower bound prevents sterile barrier failure. The upper bound prevents tray distortion and fiber tear in Tyvek.

Biocompatibility data for the finished device are governed by ISO 10993-5:2009 for cytotoxicity and ISO 10993-10:2010 for skin sensitization. Migratory slip agent levels are specified only after extraction studies on the finished device according to ISO 10993-18. Packaging validation follows ISO 11607-1:2019 Clause 5.2, covering materials and seal integrity. Accelerated aging is carried out per ASTM F1980 at 55 °C and 60% RH. On blown film lines, VL0003 is extruded with a die gap of 1.8–2.4 mm and a blow-up ratio of 2.2:1 to 3.0:1. Equipment includes an IBC die with 200 mm diameter and a dual-lip air ring. The frost line height is held below 400 mm to minimize blocking. Film tensile properties are measured per ASTM D882 with a 25.4 mm wide specimen and 500 mm/min crosshead speed. End products include lidding for syringes, IV catheters, wound care kits, and surgical drape packs.

Where geomembrane fabrication moves from 2.0 mm HDPE sheet to thinner flexible alternatives for landfill cover, pond liners, and biogas containment, VL0003 is blended with bimodal HDPE at 15–30 wt%. Flat die sheet extrusion is used. The die width is typically 2,000–3,000 mm. The polishing stack is heated to 70–90 °C. Sheet thickness ranges from 0.75 mm to 1.5 mm. The VL0003 fraction lowers flexural modulus and improves low-temperature bending. Tensile properties are tested per ASTM D6693 at 23 °C with a Type IV dumbbell at 50 mm/min. Tear resistance is recorded per ASTM D1004. Puncture resistance follows ASTM D4833.

Stress crack resistance under constant tensile load is measured per ASTM D5397-20 in 10% Igepal CO-630 solution at 50 °C. The test reports failure time under 30% of yield stress. The drop in stress crack resistance above 30 wt% VL0003 is consistent with lower crystallinity. Published data for this specific VL0003 blend is limited. Carbon black masterbatch is incorporated at 2.0–2.5 wt%. Dispersion is evaluated per ASTM D5596. Seaming uses wedge welding at 350–420 °C and 1.5–2.0 m/min. Peel separation is tested per ASTM D6392. The seams shall not peel below 80% of parent sheet strength. Installed end products include secondary containment liners, floating covers for agricultural slurry, and landfill daily cover. UV stabilizers are mandatory. Hindered amine light stabilizers are compounded at 0.3–0.8 wt% with a triazine UV absorber at 0.1–0.3 wt%. Weathering is tested per ASTM G154 for 2,000 h. The processing window must be confirmed on pilot flat-die equipment.

When VLDPE Laminating Grade Replaces LDPE in Pouch Converting

Extrusion coating and laminating lines running VL0003 at 280–310 °C melt temperature apply the resin to aluminum foil, paper, and BOPP. The coat weight is held at 15–25 g/m². Line speed ranges from 100 m/min to 300 m/min. The extruder is a single-screw machine with 28:1 L/D, water-cooled feed throat, and a coat hanger die. Die width is matched to substrate at 1,200–2,500 mm. The lower crystallinity of VL0003 delays solidification. This extends fiber tear and metal adhesion before the melt curtain reaches the chill roll. Laminate bond strength is tested per ASTM F904.

Adhesion to aluminum foil requires corona treatment of the foil at 42–48 dyn/cm. Ozone treatment of the molten polymer curtain is applied at 3–5 kW per meter of die width. A chemical primer or a thin tie resin may also be used. In aseptic brick and sachet structures, the sealant must survive peroxide sterilization or hot-fill at 85–90 °C. Neck-in and edge bead formation are more severe with VL0003 than with LDPE. Draw resonance occurs when the draw-down ratio exceeds 15:1 or when the line speed exceeds 250 m/min on thin coats below 15 g/m². Blending 20–40 wt% LDPE into the VL0003 layer stabilizes the melt curtain. End products include foil pouches for soups, detergent sachets, and paperboard canisters for dry beverages. Published data for VL0003 in ultra-thin coating below 10 g/m² is limited.

Post-consumer PP homopolymer regrind is compounded with VL0003 at 5–15 wt%. The blend is produced on a co-rotating twin-screw extruder with 40:1 L/D, screw speed 300–600 min⁻¹, and barrel temperatures of 200–220 °C. The VL0003 phase forms discrete inclusions in the PP matrix. Number-average particle size is typically 0.3–1.5 µm, measured by scanning electron microscopy. Notched Izod impact at 23 °C is recorded per ASTM D256. For brittle PP regrind, a 10 wt% VL0003 addition typically moves notched Izod from below 3 kJ/m² to above 6 kJ/m². Flexural modulus is measured per ASTM D790. Modulus decreases as loading increases. At 20 wt% addition, the modulus falls below 900 MPa for many PP regrinds.

Melt flow rate of the compounded product is measured per ISO 1133-1:2022 at 230 °C/2.16 kg. The final MFR is set by the PP feed, not by VL0003. Injection molding trials run on a 150-ton hydraulic press with barrel temperature 210–230 °C and mold temperature 30–50 °C. Cycle time is extended by 1–2 s when VL0003 loading exceeds 15 wt% because the soft phase delays ejection. End products include storage bins, pails, crates, and automotive inner trim. Food-contact status is lost when post-consumer regrind is used unless the feedstock is food-grade certified. Long-term heat aging follows ISO 188 at 110 °C. VL0003-modified PP should not be specified for continuous service above 90 °C.
