    Application of Daelim MDPE XP9000

In gas distribution pipe extrusion, the governing performance metric is not short-term tensile strength but the hydrostatic design basis (HDB) extrapolated from long-term pressure testing per ISO 9080 and ASTM D2837. Daelim MDPE XP9000, when specified for buried gas mains, is processed under conditions typical for medium-density polyethylene pressure-pipe grades within the density band of 0.930–0.940 g/cm³ determined by ISO 1183-1. The applicable pipe classification, PE 80, PE 100, or PE 100-RC, must be confirmed against the supplier’s certification, and the system design follows EN 1555-1 for natural gas distribution, ISO 4437-1 for buried PE gas piping, or AS/NZS 4130 for Australian networks. On a grooved-barrier single-screw extruder with an L/D ratio between 30:1 and 36:1, the grooved feed zone is maintained at 60–90°C, barrel zones are stepped from 180°C to 220°C, and the head and die adapter are held at 200–225°C. A screen pack of 60/120/60 mesh is mounted upstream of the breaker plate, and the melt is formed into a parison before entering a vacuum calibration tank under 0.06–0.09 MPa negative pressure. Long-term integrity is dominated by slow crack growth (SCG) and rapid crack propagation (RCP); ISO 13479 accelerates SCG at 80°C under 4.0 MPa hoop stress, while ISO 13478 addresses full-scale RCP through low-temperature impact on internally pressurized pipe. Surface sharkskin can appear when the die land length is below 20 mm at high line speed, requiring a reduction in throughput or an increase in die temperature to restore melt quality.

What Chlorine Resistance Evidence Must Accompany Potable Water Pipe Extrusion?

For water supply and irrigation networks, Daelim MDPE XP9000 is extruded into blue or black pressure pipe according to ISO 4427-2 or EN 12201-2, and the pipe must retain slow crack growth resistance in contact with disinfectant residuals. The chlorinated water environment introduces oxidative degradation at the crack tip; the notched pipe test, ISO 13479, at 80°C and 4.0 MPa internal pressure in a 2 ppm free chlorine solution, provides the primary pass/fail criterion for potable water mains in Europe. Processing on the same grooved barrel extruder uses a melt temperature of 210–230°C and a die with a convergent angle between 16° and 20°, followed by vacuum sizing under 0.07–0.08 MPa to control outside diameter to ISO 11922-1 tolerances. When ultraviolet resistance is required, a coextruded black outer layer containing 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black masterbatch is applied; carbon black dispersion must satisfy ISO 18553 and the average particle size must not exceed 25 µm. Potable water contact compliance relies on migration testing under Regulation (EU) No 10/2011, total organic carbon migration below 10 mg/dm², and organoleptic tests under EN 1622. For North American installations, NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 Section 4 certification is mandatory; France uses ACS; the United Kingdom applies BS 6920-1; Germany applies DVGW W270. A persistent production issue concerns parison sag before calibration: if the vacuum tank is positioned farther than 150 mm from the die face, ovality exceeding 2.0 mm/m can occur, especially in diameters above 110 mm.

Parison Programming Parameters in Large-Part MDPE Extrusion Blow Moulding

Extrusion blow moulding of industrial containers, intermediate bulk container liners, and agricultural sprayer tanks from Daelim MDPE XP9000 requires control of swell, sag, and pinch weld integrity. The accumulator head is maintained at 195–215°C, and the die gap is profiled through a 100-point parison programmer to compensate for gravitational sag in parts longer than 600 mm. The mould clamping force for a 220 L container is approximately 250–400 t depending on flash width and parting line design; the pinch weld is compressed at 0.5–1.0 MPa hydraulic pressure to achieve molecular mixing across the joint. Environmental stress crack resistance is evaluated per ASTM D1693 Condition B using 100% Igepal CO-630 at 50°C, and some chemical container specifications require F50 > 1000 h for aggressive contents. Blow air pressure is set at 0.6–1.0 MPa, and cooling time is governed by the parison inner wall falling below 80°C before demoulding. A practical limit emerges at die swell ratios above 2.0:1 if the die gap is opened beyond 8 mm; the resulting flash can be recycled only after grinding to flakes smaller than 8 mm and blending at not more than 20% with virgin pellets to avoid gel formation.

Rotational moulding of chemical storage tanks and closed-top agricultural vessels from Daelim MDPE XP9000 begins not with melt flow but with the powder’s particle size distribution and bulk density. The resin is ground to a 35-mesh cut (500 µm) with a typical bulk density above 0.40 g/cm³ per ASTM D1895 Method A. The mould is charged to a wall thickness of 2.0–4.0 mm, rotated biaxially at a ratio of 4:1 or 8:1, and heated in a forced-air oven at 260–300°C until the internal air temperature reaches 190–220°C. The medium density resin displays a wide sintering plateau, allowing a uniform melt layer without heavy telescoping on vertical walls; after the peak internal air temperature, the mould enters the cooling chamber where forced air cooling at 5–8 m/s is followed by water spray at 40–60°C. A critical parameter is demoulding temperature: the MDPE part must be cooled below 80°C before removal to prevent warpage exceeding 0.5 mm per 100 mm. No pre-drying is normally required, but if the powder absorbs moisture at relative humidity above 60%, surface bubbles may appear; conditioning in a dry-air hopper at 60°C for 1–2 h resolves this. Wall thickness is measured with an ultrasonic thickness gauge per ASTM E797 to a tolerance of ±10% of nominal for tanks larger than 1000 L. Outdoor agricultural tanks commonly require 0.3–0.5 wt% hindered amine light stabilizer and 0.2–0.4 wt% antioxidant masterbatch for UV resistance under ISO 4892-3 for 3000 h xenon-arc exposure with no chalking.

When Buried Conduit Requires Resistance to 40 kPa Installation Loads

For telecom and power cable ducting, Daelim MDPE XP9000 is extruded as single-wall or double-wall pipe with a nominal outside diameter from 50 mm to 250 mm. The specification is governed by ring stiffness classes evaluated per ISO 9969 or ASTM D2412, with common minimum requirements of SN4, SN8, or SN16 depending on installation depth and soil loading. The medium density resin provides a balance between flexibility and hoop strength, allowing coilable duct in diameters up to 125 mm to be wound on drums without kinking at -20°C, as evaluated by low-temperature tensile elongation per ISO 527-2. Extrusion uses a smooth barrel extruder with L/D 24:1 to 30:1, melt temperature 200–220°C, and a pipe die with spiral mandrel distribution; the outer layer is often UV-stabilized with 2.0–2.5 wt% carbon black. For corrugated double-wall duct, the inner wall is extruded as a smooth continuous tube while the outer corrugated shell is formed in a moving mould block at a forming pressure of 0.05–0.15 MPa; the melt must have sufficient parison integrity to avoid tearing at the corrugator tips. The finished duct is tested for impact resistance per EN 744 or ASTM D2444 and for crush resistance per EN 61386-24. A field limitation is that unshielded MDPE duct is not suitable for direct burial in rocky soil without sand bedding because point loads can exceed the yield stress at the inner crown, causing localized ovalization beyond 5% diameter.

Geomembrane Core Layers and the Stress Crack Perspective

In environmental containment, Daelim MDPE XP9000 can be used as a core layer in multilayer geomembranes where flexibility and puncture resistance are weighed against chemical resistance. The sheet is produced by flat-die extrusion or calendering into thicknesses of 0.75–2.5 mm per ASTM D5199. Stress crack resistance is critical, evaluated by ASTM D5397 single point notched constant tensile load test, with acceptance values usually above 200 h for landfill applications. The resin’s medium density provides lower stiffness than HDPE, which can improve conformance to subgrade but reduce tensile yield strength; tensile properties are measured per ASTM D6693 at 23°C with a testing speed of 50 mm/min. In coextrusion, the MDPE core is layered between LLDPE or HDPE skins, with the skin layers providing UV and oxidation resistance; the core extruder uses a melt temperature of 220–240°C and the die is maintained at 230–250°C. Seam strength is assessed by peel and shear tests per ASTM D6392; the MDPE core often shows lower heat seal initiation temperatures than HDPE, but published weld window data for this specific configuration is limited. Chemical resistance to municipal solid waste leachate at 50°C is typically evaluated by immersion per ASTM D5747 for 120 days, measuring change in mass and tensile properties; no more than 5% loss of tensile elongation is accepted in most specifications. This application is less common than pipe and rotomoulding, and the processor should qualify the exact resin lot for stress crack and weld fusion performance before specifying it in a containment design.
