Application of Conventus Polymers DURALOY™ ASA ASA0057

On a coextrusion line producing ASA-capped rigid PVC window lineal and siding profiles, DURALOY™ ASA ASA0057 is fed through a dedicated 35 mm single-screw extruder with a 24:1 L/D barrel and a barrier screw, then passed through a 40/60/100 mesh screen pack before entering a coextrusion feedblock. The ASA melt stream is held at 220–240°C, while the rigid PVC substrate stream is held at 180–190°C to avoid thermal degradation of the vinyl. Capstock layer thickness is controlled between 0.10 mm and 0.25 mm. Below 0.10 mm, the capstock provides insufficient UV screening, which allows degradation of the underlying PVC and produces pink discoloration from conjugated polyene formation. Above 0.25 mm, the difference in coefficient of linear thermal expansion between ASA, commonly 80–100×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹ by ISO 11359-2, and rigid PVC, commonly 50–70×10⁻⁶ K⁻¹, creates residual interfacial stress that can initiate delamination after freeze-thaw cycling. Direct ASA-to-PVC fusion often requires an acrylic tie layer of 0.05–0.10 mm to prevent interfacial failure in field failure studies; some processors run a 0.08 mm tie layer with a coextrusion feedblock temperature of 200–215°C. For color-matched capstock, an ASA-based color concentrate is let down at 2–4 wt%, while non-ASA carriers such as EVA or PE should be avoided because they can lower heat deflection temperature and create surface haze. Drying is required at 80°C for 4 h to reduce moisture below 0.05%; hopper dryers with dew point below -30°C are standard, because moisture above 0.08% produces splay, voiding, and reduced interlayer peel strength. Plasticizer migration from flexible PVC glazing beads into the capstock is evaluated by ISO 177:2016; mass gain greater than 2.0% indicates a compatibility risk. Weatherability of the finished lineal is tested under ASTM D3679 and ISO 4892-2:2013 Cycle 1 for 3000 h; acceptance is typically ΔE <3.0, no chalking, and no visible cracking at 10× magnification.

Why do outdoor telecommunication enclosures require UL 746C f1 verification before field deployment?

Polymeric enclosures for North American utility and telecom exposure are not accepted solely on the basis of UV retention. UL 746C governs polymeric materials for electrical equipment intended for outdoor use; an f1 classification is required for water and UV exposure, and the listing is thickness- and color-dependent. For DURALOY™ ASA ASA0057 terminal boxes and antenna shrouds, the molder must submit the exact color compound at the minimum wall thickness, typically 2.0–3.0 mm, because thinner sections may fail the combined UV/ignition evaluation. The molding process on a 600–800 t hydraulic press uses a melt temperature of 230–250°C, a mold temperature of 60–80°C, and cold runners with full-round diameters above 6 mm to avoid gate freeze-off. Large flat lids are gated with sequential valve-gated hot runners to reduce weld-line length; weld lines in ASA can show 15–20% lower unnotched impact than bulk material when measured by ISO 179-1/1eU, and improper gate placement magnifies this loss. After molding, parts are annealed at 70°C for 2 h to relieve molded-in stress before thermal cycling. The following matrix is used for outdoor suitability verification.

When unpainted automotive pillar trim must resist high-pressure wash cycles and car-wax stress cracking without coating

Body-color matched B-pillar covers, mirror scalps, and cowl vent grilles molded from DURALOY™ ASA ASA0057 are produced in multi-cavity tools at cavity pressures of 40–60 MPa. Clamp force is typically 500–800 t for family tools with projected area up to 0.4 m². High-gloss black grades are run at mold temperatures of 70–80°C to replicate polished tool surfaces and avoid flow marks; lower mold temperatures below 50°C produce visible splay and gloss variation under high-pressure sodium inspection lighting. Unpainted exterior trim must resist car-wax stress cracking; the relevant screening test is ASTM D543 immersion or spot exposure on a strain jig at 1.0% outer-fiber strain for 24 h, followed by crack inspection at 10× magnification. OEM exterior plastic acceptance commonly references SAE J2527 with daylight filter; after 1500–2000 kJ/m² at 340 nm, grained surfaces are accepted with ΔE <3.0 and gloss retention above 65%. For black parts, carbon black masterbatch is let down at 0.5–1.0 wt%; higher loadings raise heat deflection temperature under ASTM D648-16 method B but reduce low-temperature ductility. Weld-line strength in thin pillar sections is controlled by gas counter-pressure in the cavity and by raising mold temperature locally to 85°C at the knit line. Published data for ASA0057 specifically under SAE J2527 at higher kV settings is limited; each color-matched grade must be validated against the OEM polymer specification.

Salt-fog and UV cycling in marine topside components exposes a failure mode distinct from automotive: surface microcracking initiated by ion migration and thermal expansion mismatch around stainless steel inserts. For DURALOY™ ASA ASA0057 used in radar arch covers, hatch trim, and RV exterior corner caps, insert overmolding requires preheating metallic inserts to 120–150°C before placement, because cold inserts quench the melt and create a highly anisotropic skin layer. The parts are then subjected to ASTM B117-19 continuous salt spray for 96 h followed by ISO 4892-2:2013 xenon-arc exposure for 1000 h; acceptance criteria are no visible pitting, no corrosion at the insert-to-plastic interface, and Charpy notched impact retention above 75% measured by ISO 179-1/1eA at -20°C. Color concentrate let-down ratios are held at 3–4 wt% in marine white and sand tones; total titanium dioxide loading above 5 wt% can lower weld-line strength and promote chalking under combined UV/salt exposure. External amine-based mold release agents should not be used on light colors because residual amines can produce photochemical yellow spots; neutral ester-based release agents are substituted in marine processing. If foam-filled flotation chambers are overmolded, polyurethane foam exotherm must remain below 90°C to prevent post-molding embrittlement of thin ASA skins.

Sheet extrusion gauge control above 2.0 mm

For thermoformed outdoor spa shells, agricultural cab roofs, and equipment shrouds produced from DURALOY™ ASA ASA0057, sheet extrusion is performed on a 90 mm single-screw extruder with 32:1 L/D, a barrier screw, and a gear pump. Melt temperature at the sheet die is held at 230–250°C; the three-roll polishing stack is set to 70–90°C for gloss control. Below 70°C, the sheet skin freezes too quickly and can develop roll-release chatter marks; above 90°C, the sheet may adhere to the rolls, producing surface defects. Gauge uniformity for thick sheet above 2.0 mm is controlled with a melt pump and automatic die-bolt adjustment to ±0.05 mm; variations greater than ±0.08 mm produce differential sag during thermoforming, resulting in radial thinning at deep-draw corners. The sheet is cut after passing through a thickness scanner using beta or x-ray backscatter, and out-of-spec edges are trimmed before forming. Thermoforming requires a sheet surface temperature of 160–180°C; forming below 150°C produces stress whitening at deep-draw features. Terminal parts such as cab roofs are evaluated for impact after forming by ISO 6603-2 instrumented puncture at -20°C; a drop in puncture energy greater than 20% relative to flat sheet indicates excessive thermoforming orientation.

How does gate type influence low-temperature weld-line strength in agricultural equipment housings?

Agricultural equipment housings molded from DURALOY™ ASA ASA0057 are often large, flat parts with multiple cutouts and bosses, making weld-line formation unavoidable. In these parts, the limiting mechanical property is not the virgin-matrix impact but the weld-line factor. On a 1000 t toggle press with a 6-drop hot-runner system, changing from open fan gates to valve-gated pin drops reduced weld-line length from 120 mm to 30 mm and improved low-temperature Charpy notched impact in the weld zone by approximately 25–35% when measured by ISO 179-1/1eA at -30°C. The mold temperature is set at 60–70°C; increasing to 80°C improves knitting at the weld zone but extends cooling time by 15–20%. Drying is critical: ASA0057 must be dried to below 0.05% moisture at 80°C for 4 h, and hopper dryers are required because agricultural processing facilities often exceed 60% RH in summer. UV stabilization in agricultural housings is evaluated according to ASTM G154-16 cycle 1 for 2000 h; color change must be below ΔE 3.0 for dark green and black formulations, with carbon black masterbatch let-down at 1–2 wt%. If the housing is powder-coated after molding, surface polarity must be assessed via wettability testing after isopropanol wipe; flame treatment should not exceed 2 passes at 30 cm/s, because excessive surface oxidation can reduce impact at the weld line.
